[Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] well Papa you can ride you taught me you wanted to learn Jenny I tried to teach your sister too ah Clara only cares about clothes and her stupid little Marquee does your mother know he's stupid of course not he's a marquee he can't be she only just likes him because he's poor I don't know well I suppose you''ll be caring for some poor Marquee yourself one of these days I'm getting a little tired of Paris with claraa and Mama wish you came to see us more often though I know you don't who told you that oh it's all right the others don't even guess getting to be a very clever young girl Jenny does your mother know that Mama doesn't know anything come on I'll race you Revolution is a very terrible thing girls all the dear Emperor's beautiful things simply handed out of the palace windows and auctioned off in the garden I went to see it you still managed to get the dinner service mama and brought it home in a wheel bar I don't think you can have went very much well not just at that moment jny of course at that moment what I felt was it was better his friend should have his things than his enemies but afterwards I thought we were friends and he he was such a friend to us he wasn't a friend to me I never met him I know love I wish you had he was so wonderful so such a man I'm not sure it wasn't a good thing he was deposed Papa clar you're an American remember I don't see what difference that makes Papa I think you sometimes forget you're the citizen of a republic and your mother yes indeed we threw off the Monstrous tyranny of Kings years ago you're a very bad influence on Jenny Papa mom and I have been trying to make her fit for decent society and along you come with your New York conversation New York is where I happen to make our living yes but we don't have to live there Paris is the only place to bring up girls I realized that at once when your father and I first came here only it's not what it once was without the Emperor Napoleon the third well no it isn't Jenny oh I don't know I do Clara and I have noticed many very sad differences my dear well you find par is all that sad and you're both so stuck on royalty why don't you try England they haven't had a revolution there yeah I suppose that's why they're so snobbish about Americans oh they're not Clara we had a marvelous time at cows last year everyone was very nice to us I like England well cows is charming of course but it's only a little place to go for the summer all seems gay enough to me what do you want an invitation to winds a castle oh papa the queen wears black all the time and she never goes out yeah girls your father is beginning to be humorous I think it's time we left him to his cigar my family now you can see why I'm getting tired of Paris popup I think I shall die if I don't get a change of air so we shall go to cow again in this summer sh we of course you shall and you'll come to please there's nothing I'd like better but New York and August isn't like Paris Jenny the men go on working and play well little perhaps but this summer it's going to be mostly work poor Papa you make it sound as though we shouldn't go to car oh nonsense there's nothing I like better than to see you girls enjoying yourselves is what I do it for I'd like to see you happy oh well I always am I'm not like claraa no you're not not at all Clara well she falls in out of love every 6 weeks but you're not like that at all how do you know you're like your mother when you fall in love it'll be very dangerous for me or for the man you weren't born to love lightly it must be wait down or nothing if you get the right man then that's wonderful but if you're disappointed is Mama unhappy what do you think she's certainly disappointed yeah you just be careful how you fall in love Jenny [Music] no the girl in white The Dark One Jerome sir Miss Jenny Jerome she and her sister were presented to you on the princess here last year sir American oh oh yes yes she's come on a lot huh she's an absolute charmer and a sister American though you say oh good lord Randol I knew several perfectly nice Americans I don't Frank introduce me I say smitten I'm sick of English girls they're all anemic come on even ran off his noticed hello M Grim oh hello splended isn't it yes the first time I've ever been on a battleship it's not a battleship it's a cruiser uh Mr I I present an old friend who's just arrived in cars Lord Randolph Churchill how' you do how' you do this your first visit to cars Mr room no we come every year in that case I can't think how I'm miss seeing you may I write my name in your program thank you Mr Bart are you a yachting man Lord Rand no I know he only interest in hunting and there's nothing to catch in the sea for a fish surely yes and wet feet and coals that's not my idea of sport I think one's much better off on dry land any day I don't agree at all and especially not tonight I can't think of a nicer place to be I believe you're American M Jerome really why I've been told so that's all right then thought perhaps I'd given myself away somehow my parents have spent so long trying to eradicate my transatlantic vowels I haven't even been allowed back to America years your vowels I assure you your accents your manners generally I did like do they see me English that's the point they're indistinguishable from the real thing how hard they should seem rather French we live in Paris you see oh well many French things are Charming of course except for government you take an interest in politics Mr I say now that is an English Frank I have that now please oh with pleasure I've came the dance after next Mr with your permission thank you Mr I suppose the French dance quite disgustingly well being frogged but they don't talk like some English men I've met well no TR Englishman dances really well you know it's not done why ever not it's not manly oh so that's why the English always tread on their ladies toes it proves their manliness I have wondered Mr jome if I promise to Try Not To Tread on your toes may I have the pleasure of this dance the pleasure I hope will be mutual yes well we can only try [Music] poor Rand looks so lost when he's chasing something without a PCA pounds no I'm awfully sorry Mr Jerome perhaps I shouldn't have ventured on anything quite so extremely one might say offensively French as a quadril why did you then well I wanted to get to know you and if I hadn't asked you to dance someone else would have done and then it would have been impossible well what have you learned about me so far that you dance very much better than I do what have you learned about me that a little French polish would not come a Miss don't deny it for a moment may I now criticize you by all means a little English discretion would save some of my blushes oh I'm sorry but I believe in speaking the truth surely not about a Chap's dancing why ever not you need Improvement Lord Randol it would not be the act of a friend to pretend otherwise ah then you're my friend I say that is progress [Music] [Music] say you're interested in politics Mr sh you see before you two men who between them will rule half the world a future Zar of Russia and a future king of England doesn't it stir your blood oh surely it does must do an American for r [Applause] [Music] Alexander my dear fellow you suppose they dance I certainly hope so because when royalty takes the floor even Aristocrats and Americans must stand and watch thank God do you really hate dancing so much no how can I it's brought us together if it hadn't been for this ball these poor Sailors deprived of feminine company and tired of horn piping to each other we should never have met as a matter of fact I find myself very much in favor of dancing after all you're not going to suggest yes oh I'm a sorry but I promise the next dance for Mr Bart may I see your program please Mr Jerome don't you believe me oh yes of course I believe you now I freed you from your promise and you can dance with me you can't do that oh it's all right you can cut Frank he won't mind he's an old friend of mine Lord brand it's all right I'll explain to him later as a matter of fact I'm not half bad at a Walts am I [Music] Frank Clara Lord Randol is Dancing with Jenny again poor Jenny one would have expected the son of a Juke to dance rather better than that English Jukes aren't like our French Jukes Mama they all live in the country and hunt [Music] feel giddy no oh good are you no more um lightheaded do you want to stop absolutely not now stand by I'm going to attempt to [Music] reverse Oh I thought Rand never reversed on principle just as he never apologizes perhaps she insisted sir we know what these Americans are [Music] who's that mother ah she's not that bad R men are the best judges of mothers M [Music] Jerome does yours let you ride she couldn't stop me if she wanted to and do you want to I've ridden since I was a child my father's a great racing man you see he founded the American Jockey Club good Heavens did he really yes I mean uh I didn't know there was one have you ever heard of a horse called Kentucky of course he was my father's I've ridden Kentucky I don't believe it well my father put me on his back after he won a race once good Heavens so what's a sensible girl knows about racing doing wasting her time in a hole like Paris well I ride every day in the summer in the bud bolog bud bolog that's not racing and this isn't dancing [Music] well that wasn't so bad was it ah good now we can have a breather this way I [Music] think good now we can talk I thought we had been talking hardly started now tell me why if you're American you live in Paris because my mother refuses to live in New York New York's pretty awful I imagine oh you imagine quite wrong I wish we spent more time there we have the most beautiful house and my father loves Opera so he's built a little theater in one of the Wings but my mother is T de almost and politically speaking completely so why do you say that if you came to Paris 5 years ago Miss Jerome you were just in time for a major European War closely followed by the bloodiest Revolution ution in modern history perhaps your mother found New York too quiet for her she wanted more passion and violence in her life well she could hardly know there was going to be the war and the commune Lord Randol I suppose you fled naturally as a matter of fact we were on the last train out of Paris before the prussians began the siege good I should hate to think of you easing rats like the people left behind rats must be so unnourished my father said the even enough of those to go around Oh you mean he was left behind no he went back with some peace proposals from the American government to bismar bis you mean you met bismar in the middle of the siege of Paris yes God I wish I could have done Bismark there's a great man a really really great man we all think he's a monster I dare say but great is that what you want to be a great man of [Music] course they not a monster I hope can one be great without being a monster I shall [Music] try what's Paris like without an emperor Paris is Paris mama says it isn't what it was your mama sounds very difficult to please I should have thought she'd been grateful for a quiet life after all all that you don't know my mother no but I know very few Americans to tell you the truth there are plenty about I expect you don't think they're good enough for you well very few people are you know but why did you say it in that tone of voice we didn't find people very friendly when we were in London I am sorry but what a very interesting life you've LED M jome well it makes up for being dull in myself I suppose a don't talk like that my dear M jome do you really know why I hate dances so much because of a nonsense people talk polite conversation is the greatest single bane of life well I can see you must think that why you don't attempt it why should I and why should you I'll be too intelligent for that sort of thing My Dear Mr Jerome life's dreadfully short it's a Pity to fill it with tot well that's what I say but no one in my family will ever listen I [Music] will I say do you mind awfully if we dance again we could sit out no I rather think we might be disturbed may I have the pleasure your program's empty I've seen it you haven't give me a chance to fill it right I'm afraid rather monopolized by your friend Mr B really she'll enjoy that he's jolly good company may I take your napoleons for instance now who were they nobody's you think the first one became an emperor by chatting to a lot of fat doers in drawing rooms a man must act if he's going to be anyone how do you act Lord Rand I don't yet but I shall I shall how oh I'll I'll go into politics I can have the family seat in Parliament anytime I want it well that doesn't sound like much of a challenge that's exactly it that's exactly my trouble things are too too easy for me perhaps you're spoil of course I am so you so are we all we're all the spoiled Darlings of our age perhaps the most spoiled of all time dancing on a warship on a lovely Summer's night all this ours and for nothing oh not nothing surely no what have we done to deserve it oh our forefathers yes they they they struggled and fought and killed and starved just so that we can go round round [Music] round mind you I'm very glad they did but I'd rather be one of those who struggle than just one of those who go round and round so would I [Music] why don't you do something Lord I'm waiting for my challenge a man has to wait for his moment you know like your Emperor Lou Napoleon oh he's not my a it's my mother's the last time we saw him was here as a matter of fact he invited us out on his yacht his moment was over he just leaned against the mar and stared at the sea looking very old and very sad he seemed to have nothing left to live for but he had lived my God he'd lived yes he he took great risks he gambled and lost well in the end we all lose in the end we all die after all what fun he had winning for 20 years first politics you know is a greasy pole 20 years is a long time to be at the top and that's where you're going to be where else [Music] well Frank one thing we must say for these Americans they have courage and stamina they'll need it sir if rand's going to pursue them I wonder you suppose they have ambition to [Music] [Music] I think I have a headache well it was crowded wasn't it Mama clar's the best ball I've ever been to of course you haven't been to very many yet have you mama will you invite Lord Randol to dine tomorrow night if you wish dear did you think he was nice niess hardly seemed to come into it what do you mean well he's so energetic didn't have time to think about whether he was nice or not he said he doesn't believe in polite conversation so I suppose he's not I believe he's one of the marra House s he's the son of the Duke of marra really Jenny the morras don't live at Morra house the Prince of Wales does don't you know anything he's got very poppy eyes doesn't he H he's only the younger son of course Mama I'm not about to marry him I've only just met him well claraa every time you and Mama meet a bachelor you see a husband what nonsense one simply wants to know who someone is if you invite him to dinner M you can ask him yourself but you're is wide awake B [Music] I say Mrs Jerome what talented girls they are well do you know I I sometimes wonder if perhaps they don't play a little too well how could they well I like music of course though I can't follow it the way the girls do but I do wonder if perhaps people really want to listen to very good music after [Music] dinner there what about that tremendous M Jerome I owe you a sincere apology whatever for I was so bullish and stupid about my dancing last night I I had no idea you were such a musician don't be so silly no I mean it anyone is musical as you must find my sort of gumping painful in every way only when you Trot on my toes well please forgive me and play again oh Lord Randolph is very polite joury but I think perhaps uh yes Randolph we we ought to be going Mr B's had quite enough I say you are that's not what I said at all no it seems your mother wants us to go I don't look here I'm I'm leaving cars the day after tomorrow oh I see going to see whenever you like we're here till September no I mean tomorrow before I go and where there's no polite conversation where we can talk I walk on the cliffs near Gard most mornings thank you good night Jenny good night Miss Jerome good night Randol good night Lord Randol good night Mrs Jerome thank you so thank you so much these ladies were exhausted you've kept them up far too long with all your chatter good night Mr good night good night that that's very painful well I am rather tired I think we should all go to bed in a moment Mama well don't stay up too late will you no mama good night good night Jenny you know I wish you wouldn't show off at the piano people might think you were professional Mama go to bed good night Cara good night Lord Randol does have poppy eyes isn't he fun oh yes who pring party of course Lord randol's a little intense don't you think no and that Dreadful mustache Clara h I think I'm going to marry him what I don't know why I just feel sure I'm going to marry him hopefully Jolly girls aren't they H who their Americans what's wrong with Americans oh look at the mother what a fearful snob she's silly Mothers always are oh L she goes on and on about the beastly French Duke she knows I really can't stick her then shut up about her I said you you aren't ready smitten are you Rand yes good Lord would you when you met them yesterday what does that matter well good Heavens which one well the fair ones in there with some frog Maris Jenny then well she's very pretty I grant you I'm going to marry her if she'll have me good God and she will [Music] I think we're really very alike identical you say you're very ambitious so am I with your mother how could you not be Mama Fe don't things about social things and money and marriage I'm far more ambitious than that well what are you ambitious for Jenny I don't know yet that's why we're so alike all I do know is I want far more out of life than anything anyone's even suggested yet look here I'm leaving tomorrow I must see you again well I'll get Mama to invite you to dinner again can you do that Jenny can you manage him Mama when it's something important yes that is the dear duuk to par such a good friend poor man nearly broke his heart when the emperor was deposed he never really recovered that's his [Music] she suffered a [Music] lot only we had gone down look here there's no point in mucking about I'm leaving tomorrow anyway I know when I made up my mind to do something Denny I do it will you marry me yes I knew you would I knew you'd ask [Music] me day that's what I day Lord Randol is very free and easy about his plans he seemed so set on leaving this morning I don't expect he has anything to do but please himself I hope he's reliable devil I do think it's a bad sign when people keep changing their plans when should we tell them the sooner the better the only reason for keeping it to ourselves would be that we weren't quite sure but we are aren't we I am and shall we say we'll be married before uh Christmas tomorrow if you like darling Julie what will everyone say does it matter it is quite out of the question I shall be the judge of that Mama you've only known the girl a week on your own admission who is she her name is Janette Jerome I know that who is she as far as I'm concerned the only thing that matters is that she's going to be my wife but my dear old man who is she she's an American she lives in Paris who is the father oh I understand he's um something on Wall Street I really don't know he's in New York and you propose to marry a girl you know nothing about with one parent in America and the other in Europe yes but my dear boy you are not ready to settle down now there Randolf mamar has a sizable Point learn from my example marriage is best postponed for as long as possible preferably forever land for be quiet now Rand you must be reasonable what may I ask you propose to live on well since I obviously cannot ask Mrs Jerome for her daughter's hand on my present allowance you cannot I shall ask the power to increase it I see what do you imagine he will say he will understand that my happiness is at St can do so perfectly well he'll do nothing of the sort he will bow to the inevitable Mama as you will too but I'm afraid I cannot possibly give my approval to such a rash and fool Hardy Venture I shall inform your father I've already informed him very well then we will await his answer Jenny you hardly know him I don't care I know quite enough to know he's the only man I want in the whole world oh you feel that now I shall always feel it but jeny he's got no money of his own don't care I don't care if we have to live on Pig's Trotters I want to marry him he wants to marry me and what we want we shall have now there is no need to talk like that I perfectly understand your feelings but mama I love him well I can't possibly give my consent until we hear from your father and in any papa will say yes I know he will I am sure papa will feel like I do that this is all very rash and precipitate Jenny meanwhile I'm a afraid I must forbid you to see him oh mama Sur in fact I have decided that we will cut short our stay in England and return to Paris I won't go it's probably wisest love and you need think that just because you allowed Mama to bully you out of your Marquee that I'm going to be bullied too I won't be you can do what you like and say what you like and lock me up if you want to but I'm going to marry Randolph I don't see how you could Jenny his eyes really are poppy of course they're not Clara says they are well they're not and give that to me oh let me look give it to me what's the matter did you promise you'd be feted to him by this golden chain for life you did why didn't you go to bed you shouldn't have taken it off if you promised not to I didn't promise anything now will you go away promise to marry him leony I wish I'd been there I'm extremely glad you weren't poking your nose into everything I'm always at school when something exciting happens and you're as hopeless as Clara you never tell me what I really want to know what are you writing in your letters mind your own business I don't know how you and Randol find things to say every day I should have thought one letter a week would have been quite enough and so much more exciting think how you'd look forward to it Lany will you please go away why because Randolph's always complaining that my letters aren't long enough and if you don't stop chattering I'll never even get to page to haven't you got any homework I've done it well go past to Clara oh it's too easy I can make her cry anytime I want to you are an extremely nasty ugly little sister yes what have you said so far you may not see I'll read one of his letters no why not does he spell as badly as he dances missed go away softly light isn't it suppose it is solid gold a Pity about having to get married it' be so much nicer if men would just give us things when we wanted them they just might want something in return yes my dear Randolph if her mother will not hear of it and your mother will not hear of it surely I'm at a loss to understand either of them Papa it would seem to be a a maternal conspiracy to be resisted to the utmost you should reflect a little older and wiser heads on both sides many elderly heads contain a great deal of folly Mr gladston will don't be per Randol you're not a boy no I am a man and like all men I wish to marry yes I quite understand that and I have no wish to dispute with you but I cannot avoid saying that anyone on the outside cannot but be struck by the unwisdom of your proceedings when two people feel towards each other what Miss Jerome and I feel Papa it becomes a great responsibility for anyone to assist in thating their Union I have made inquiries about Mr Jerome and I must say they are not encouraging it seems he is a sporting and I should say vulgar sort of man and a ration even violent Speculator mainly in Railways as a result of which he has recently suffered a severe loss I cannot see that that has any bearing on the matter either way oh my dear Randol no one in their senses could call such a connection respectable it appears that he drives six and even eight horses and has founded a race course I do not understand you papa American Customs are different from our own of course but a an interest in horses and horse racing is hardly a mark of vulgarity among our own class indeed rather the opposite is your objection that he's not rich enough Randolph you will have to make your own way in the world I know that and I'm glad of it well you know best how I can help you there will be a general election soon the seat here at Woodstock is yours for the asking after that it's up to you you may have noticed Papa that I have rather lost interest in politics in recent months to the great regret of your mother and myself you know how much we've set our hearts and you're making a name for yourself in Parliament yeah I believe Miss Jerome would encourage me to do that indeed she does does already now she I mean I I need support in anything I do Papa without hers I do not see myself having a career of any distinction indeed I think I should find life very dreary altogether no one goes through what I've gone through oh my dear Randal you were engaged in three days that surely indicates the intensity of my feelings Papa I think you must wait a year but a year you must show proof of your affection and so must she and uh if there is an election within the year um that might alter my view we shall have to wait and see then you do not positively refuse consent my dear boy all I'm thinking of is your own happiness why do people always say that when they are in fact creating as much unhappiness as they can of course Randolph they can see beyond the emotion of the moment happiness is not just a question of hours and days now if at the end of one year's time you and M Jerome are of the same mind then your mother and I will receive her as a daughter and with all the affection that you can desire thank you papa so he thinks my daughter isn't good enough for his son Papa that's not what he said play it that I I I I only gave General permission now I see the LIE of the land I withdraw my consent but you said no son of his can be good enough for my daughter who does he think he is English Jukes don't walk on water let me tell you something else I've been making inquiries about your young Lord Randolph and let me tell you Jenny I'm not to pleased with what I've heard I don't think there's much truth in what you've heard I thought he must love you he does because the English are so damn prejudiced against Americans only love could overcome it all money and you are no AR so it couldn't be that Papa if he loves me why do you object because I'm not having any damned English Duke telling me that my daughter isn't good enough for his his his his Idol westal son that's why it's all off the whole thing papa no one's going to stop me not even you it was yours and not another's hand that built the funeral P near which you ter the dagger plunged into its bleeding Hilt thy fate is sealed if thou dust marit landord for God's sake shut up then just started oh man perambulators and the baby's rusks shall be amongst thy chiefest cares see thou to the bottle that it sucks Revolt thy spirit will not dare and when thy better half shall whine or fret because because thou dest not at home per chance the scene I said shut up look here I'm only trying to give you good advice I don't care if the girl is the Incarnation of all the physical Beauties on God's Earth she is and I want them now but why do you want to marry her for her Fortune no to have children no because you've adored her for yours no because I love her which is something you could never possibly understand you're in love with an ideal my dear bford if you wish to live to inherit this damn great morg you will now shut up but Randolph look at me look what marriage has done to me I plan to learn from your mistakes all I'm saying is marry in haste andford any more advice from you will amount to sufficient GRS or fratricide well you're a damn fool that's all I can say you don't know what you're letting yourself in for this father of hers he sounds like a First Rate crook he seems a perfect gentleman to me belongs to a First Rate Club anyway is it all crooked didn't they said I drank I'm afraid so well of course I drink every gentleman drinks but look here I mean I don't drink well I can see that for myself now do you uh know what they said about you who you had your spies on me my father had his on you didy by God they said you're very extravagant and spend all your money on horses and opera singers and uh oh you belong to a very fast set Mr Jerome well it's all true they tell you I used to be rich they said you've had difficulties recently I most certainly have but don't you worry we'll arrange everything your father and I that's very decent of you sir it's just one thing I love Jenny so do I well I wouldn't go against her choice for anything in the world unless it was a Frenchman she said you'd be on our side well I am Jenn's very special I hope you are what do you mean what are you going to do with your life and hers I'm going into Parliament don't worry about me I'll make a name for myself all right they'll even hear of me in New York I'm sorry Mr gerro I'm sorry too Mar but that's the way we do it in America well it's really not at all the way we do it in England but what you suggest would make your daughter quite independent of Rand from a financial point of view well indeed it would in my country married woman's property is absolutely entirely her own Janette is marrying an Englishman and thereby loses her American nationality she will become an English woman Mr Gerome and therefore the settlement rarely must be in accordance with English laws and customs but that would make her completely defendant upon Randolph yes that is the way we do it I see I consider that most unwise I hope you're not implying that Randol is in any way untrustworthy no no no not at all I can't think of a safer young man no it's just that well as a matter of principle I'm afraid you must yield Mr Jam very well you have some very curious Customs Mal I don't know how your women put up with them we found it better on the whole not to allow the women any saying these matters yeah so it's uh entirely your decision is it that neither you nor The Duchess will be attending the wedding I regret very much that we will be prevented from coming over my wife The Duchess and I are both extremely fond of Randolph Mr Gerome we've uh had a little trouble with our Elder boy I quite understand all our hopes are in Randolph so mine I'm very glad he took his chance and did so well at the election he needed something to do well we were very pleased naturally that's why we agreed to let the marriage take place earlier than we had originally said the House of Commons would yes you're quite right of course it will give him something serious to do I have great faith in Randolph believe me I have no doubts about your daughter I assure you we both wish them every happiness mer Melle I wonder if you've got enough dresses Jenny how many are there there are 23 I think it'll be enough Clara well don't more you know how badly English women dress I shouldn't think there' be anyone at Blen him with as many Paris dresses as me 23 yes but you mustn't let us down Jenny if the Duke and Duchess are too proud to come to the wedding I don't care if nobody comes just so long as Rand does and he I expect will want to see you without your dresses it's not for you to I'm sorry they're not coming I don't care I'm a favorite son I'm afraid well then obviously no one could ever be good enough for you and I refuse to be offended oh you do take it well Jenny no but we've won they tried to stop us and they couldn't if they're too Grand to admit defeat toy my goodness but we did defeat them didn't we we vanquished them at least you did well thanks to the election compared to winning over my M that was a walk over nonsense you fought very hard you weren there I would have been if I could you've not had any doubts then never I have Randol well after the last few months isn't married life have seem rather humdrum with this ring I the wed with with my body I Thee worship with my body I Thee worship and with all my worldly Goods I Thee endow and with all my worldly Goods I Thee endow in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost Amen in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost amen Those whom God hath joined together let no man put us under [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
