so this right here is the new vocal template get the screen graphs get the screen grasp all my vocals 100 are in the box i you cannot do like the people who and that's the difference between technical uh engineers who probably like to stay outside the box because their comfort zone is you know the out outboard eq even though i do use the outboard eqs but i'll insert it you know inside pro tools so but what for what music is now to mix even though i'm 100 outside the box which you can do in the box can not be out you know outside the box you can't i know that you're planning to disconnect me and video i'm doing a complete breakdown of jason joshua's vocal mixing template which he uses on almost all of his mixes nine times out of ten is going to be the j2021 vocal template not only will i be showing you the exact settings and doing a breakdown on every single plugin in his vocal template i'll also be showing you how he mixes a full vocal front to back the first plugin in his vocal template is spectred by waves factory watch him explain how he uses it it goes spector it's not really even an eq it's a harmonic parallel eq where basically you're paralleling so it brings wherever you put the dots you'll see that part of the vocal go to attention and then when you actually put some gain into it you're going to be like spectre came in it's low five with frequency placement you know what i mean everybody knows with lo-fi you hit the drive that's only going to give you around about the 10k area 8 to 10k area we know what the saturation does but this one makes you put it anywhere so that's why uh the low-fi went the way of the dodo after spectre jason uses el rey by acoustica i mean it's by ear with this greg wells killed it killed it boy greg wells home run and i don't know if anyone can see your boy got the originals that's how much i love this compressor the old b86a but he modded his man this is a great plugin like he basically gave you one of the world's greatest compressors but modified he he thought about how can i improve it not like oh i'm going to make it exactly like it i'm going to make it better and i'm going to trust greg whale's ears attack and releases everything on this it really weights your vocals it puts a head like if you got screechy mcgee if screechy mcgee is singing lead vocal call greg wells and get the lra immediately but the uh the attack time i always start dead in the middle and you can actually go beyond even slower than the normal is but um yeah i'm always right about here it has a great filter too to take away you know the initial uh rumbles that trigger your uh your threshold but yeah it's a great great one we all know the pro q3 and it goes 404 pro q3 i switch from fresh air and then to airborosis as you heard him say he'll sometimes use airbiosis as a substitute watch him explain how he uses it i love this for the top end didn't really use it um too much on the mix that i did yesterday but as you can see on this her one i doubled up on it great for the top end and uh high mids very sizzly kind of eerily reminiscent of the uh avalon 2055 eq um then you see the second mc404 explain that just because sometimes i don't use it sometimes i'll use it but this will always be on my vocal chain unless it's not the c6 old school i just love adjusting the attack times and thresholds to give me a little better contour and then soothe just for protection and usually set it and forget it i just work through this and this is my preset sometimes i move this over and over but this much pretty stays the same um sometimes i'll bring the release up but the attack will always be slow now let's take a look at a scenario where jason joshua doesn't use his exact template this is not the j2021 vocal template per se but you guys can get a little peek of this right here it's the one that's used on her hit bam hit bam bam bam bam to the bam through the map me i freestyled this one i could tell i totally freestyled this one now that you have a basic understanding of his vocal template watch him mix a vocal front to back hit uh every instrument with the uh the galley i go straight to the vocals and i mute everything that's not important to me and this record and then i'll put them back in at the end i'll listen to what they did same thing every time [ __ ] be way out of line [ __ ] be jumping jump jump jumping here jace notices certain heights are interfering with the vocal so eclip gain automates some of the high heads down once he has his initial vocal mix down he'll then activate his waves factory track spacer which is on the all music aux the all music aux contains instruments that are melodic for example guitars keyboards a sample the lead vocal is sidechained to the track spacer so basically makes room for the lead vocal which as you can see i have the track spacer which had that vocal sitting in that pocket boy get this track spacer get it right now don't hesitate don't wait track spacer by who waze factory you did it again until the day i die let my raptor [ __ ] at the doctor i got the [Music] she just want a [ __ ] [Music] next jason uses clip gain automation on the vocal to make it more even [Music] standing like the gap band is [ __ ] i'm wrapped banded it takes [Music] like the gap band is [ __ ] i'm wrapped bandage it takes good god damn it deeper look at how jason joshua does effects for those who don't know jason joshua has a whole effects team of assistants these assistants will take the raw vocal and the track and try to create interesting and unique throws using delays reverbs flangers phasers and other sorts of crazy effects the effects are then printed down and imported into jason's main mixing session let's take a look at the effects he's on hers fight for you uh gabby hurt hates lasers we call them lasers she's not a big fan for lasers so we don't have too much special stuff so it's basically reverb throws but i can give you kind of an idea [Music] so you got these throws right here and the reason why we do it like this is like every every um every part of the song from this intro to the verse to the hook to the pulse hook to the next verse they're all scene changes so you know i'm just a big proponent of of giving somebody especially in today's adhd generation other things to hear and and and moments that are or inflections if you will or little piccadillos that make that section different from the other and and just putting the same reverb with the same you already know ping pong delays and just keep it moving to me it's just not it's not art smoke in the air feel the hate when we stare all the pain that we beat all the pain just you know search [ __ ] throws here [Music] so yeah these were these are definitely mike stevensburg lasers and as you can see um mike siebert hasn't done effects in quite a long time i had to bring him out of retirement for this one though because i knew this
