hello [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hello how look at [Applause] that I always love a big screen behind me or next to me or something like that uh thank you guys for being here um this has been awesome I we're going to start off I I usually uh I was telling him sorry usually I just opened up for Q&A and such like that um but I told him he could start the question if he had any I know generously let me ask some questions that's okay I'm hoping it'd be great cuz again usually you know you might ask something different or have something planned that someone else might not so look at that chronic right there let's go I like it chronic have you got a question no no I just was saying The Chronic the outfit is cool but they might have a question but you you have one or you could tell them ask me wait a sec sorry I just noticed your Boba fed here very it's May the 4th I love it it is today isn't it wow sorry I was playing because uh fortnite has May the 4th right and they came out with all these new skins and like yeah anyway how are you doing today say I'm good I'm good it's been awesome Kevin and I excuse me been got here and we started signing right away and then we started taking photos that and then we signed more and then took more photos um and now we came and then I came right to the panel Kevin's like oh I'll be there soon I'm like I'm going to go now so I didn't want any guys have to wait and stare at the screen here except you know but uh but yeah so it's been great honestly I love it I I spent uh Thursday I hung I got here Thursday well to London and I walked around London and then I got here yesterday I took the train which was really cool I fell asleep on it it was nice you know I was worried I was going to miss my stop but I got to see a bunch of sheep cuz I'm a sheep [ __ ] you know no um it was cool though it was really nice have you had much time to walk around Liverpool you seen the sights or not a whole lot I did pass uh you know we got here and I ate and I fell asleep my it takes me so long I'm telling you even when I was I would say I'm going to blame it I'm being old cuz I'm almost 50 June I'll be 50 but I feel like even when I was younger when we come out here it's re takes really long for me to adjust to the time difference cuz and it is weird like I my wife just called she had called me when uh I was waking up and she was just going to bed and it's so weird to like but it for me I always try to come a few days earlier if I'm doing something because it takes me like three days to finally get on the time change and stuff like that and I still Ain haven't adjusted because it was just like two days ago so uh but you know so I didn't I walked around for like an hour here last night and it started raining of course I was like I'm going to go walk around and see everything and then it started raining and I was like you know so it's British summertime and do you get stopped a lot in public is it like being being a pop culture icon no you know I don't I no one no one stopped me yesterday I walked around no one said anything I feel like even at home it depends where I'm at but I would say especially with my haircut now I would say maybe once a week someone might be like oh my God I didn't recognize you but I heard your voice so I knew as you you're that guy right and I'm like snooch to the [ __ ] n TR you know so that was going to be me follow question are you just like ever doing your shopping just walking through a grocery store convenience store in the background you it's new to the [ __ ] new faintly people say that sometimes yeah they but I always feel like people don't especially if I'm out of like where I live like if I'm you know like a small town in Ohio or something people are like I thought it was you but I was like there's no way why would you be here in Ohio in this small town and stuff but it sounded like you so you know but so yeah it usually I feel like they're waiting to see if it's actually me before they yell something but then they might go you know like snooch to the N you know or 15 bucks little man and I'll like put that [ __ ] in my hand baby you know please do so it's been it is it's cool it's been you know Kevin and I just did an event we have a comic book store we we uh it's been open out 25 years the actual store has been there in Red Bank New Jersey um but we did two days we did like an event where we take photos and we sign stuff and chat and stuff at the comic book store because it's technically this month is like our 30 year and a birthday Jay and Bob has been around for 30 years how crazy is that thank you thank you did everybody here watch clerks at an inappropriately young age like me but isn't it's surreal for me to think like it's like when when we we were there and we were talking about it like it really was like Wow 30 years you know we Kevin we made clerks and Jay and Bob were born um and it just seems so surreal and Kevin and I have been friends longer than that but it's it's unbelievable that the movies have been around it's been that long since we made the movies and been doing this and and one of my favorite things about doing the conventions especially is I love like people will bring pictures up and show me and it so blows me away they'll like hey this was uh you know man Chester ComicCon 20 years ago and I'm like holy [ __ ] you know look at look at that young buck with the big we there's probably kids here right sorry I forgot there might be children here but um but it is it's really cool to see CU people have captured I feel like you know it's nice people have captured um you know they get pictures while they're at the con stuff and they keep them and they've captured like my life throughout the past 20 years or so it's pretty awesome so um does anyone have a question I guess we can open up for you guys right now you young man oh the hello Darby um you know what if I'm invited and I go I wish I had more we at first the wife and my kids were going to come the whole family were going to make a whole trip of this we were going to uh you know do everything we've done up to this point and then we were going to stick around and we were going to stay and go sightseeing around the the UK but then we were going to go over maybe to France or something like that but then things changed and they didn't wind up coming so now I'm leaving Monday but I would love to go back there I shot a movie there I I spent time in Darby and I was telling my buddy earlier I was like we went to Nottingham and [ __ ] and I was so excited cuz I'm like this is where Robin Hood is you know and we like got went to go we my buddy showed me there's like this bar that's like in this tree or something has been around forever like it really blows me away how long things have been around here here it it seems like cuz I never think about it being home we went to uh actually when we were in London I went and picked up my kids a couple toys we walk by I was like look there's a toy store and my buddy's like yeah that's famous 263 years it's been open heart hams what's it called hes Hames thank you 263 years that blows my mind and I'm like how old is the city of London he's like I think it's like 3 400 years old and then we Googled it and it's like over 3,000 years old and we're like wow but it is like all the stuff that's been around for so long I love that stuff like the church we passed on the way in that you know the gentleman driving us explained that the bomb hit and it like blew everything out but the walls stood stood there and the St Luke's bomb out Church they put gigs on in there man you need to do a show say again they put gigs on in that church that's what someone was just telling me no roof you can smoke it's all good it's pretty cool I mean that shit's real but like the old buildings and castles and stuff I I love I love that I love that about being here and the first time I went here I went around and just took you know we went to the um to go see the London Eye and the all that stuff like that really I like so so a little bit of research the movie you got a little who whis put they whisper to you in there you don't need to know are they bringing me out a birthday cake no I'm just kidding did they tell you did I answer your question sorry I just realized so I hopefully you know next time I come back and I have some time you know actually my friend Dom who's from there who is the reason I went there and we filmed there and stuff we filmed I filmed a movie there I directed called madness in the method um you know who knows I might go back him and I are talking about trying to do another project together yeah it's it was it was so much fun I I really did enjoy myself while I was there so so was Madness in the method you directed it say again you directed today I did I directed it how was that step it was awesome it really was um I had a is my the only movie the first and only so far um it sucks because I was all excited I was about to direct another movie finally someone's like hey I want you to direct my movie um and I was supposed to do it and then the strike happened so now that's put on hold because like while the strike was going on which took for months uh the financing half the financing fell through so it's still possible and I'll post about it of course so my social things happen but it was great it really was great it was it was funny cuz I came down to do a movie I did uh like three days on a movie called Devil's Tower that was my buddy he someone else directed and all that stuff and he was like hey is there anything you'd want to do he goes you know I'm just he's like I know you do the J thing and you do cameos here and do other movies he's like but if you really had your anything you could do what would you want to do and I said well I would love to direct for one and I would really like to play like a character like Hannibal lecor like a serial killer or something like that I said that's something I'd like to challenge myself and see so my buddy was like all right all right he's like I'm going to write you something so when when I left like three months later he's like hey I've been writing this script I listen to what you said he's like I've been writing this script I hope you don't mind he sent it to me and it was different than what the movie wound up being but I was like this is awesome and I said but how about we make it this and him and I went back and forth with ideas and then he was like all right awesome he's like I'm going to see if I can get money for this and like I swear like 6 months from but I didn't hear from him I just thought like he started working on another thing he directs and he produces and stuff out here in London well out in London and stuff and so I didn't hear from him so I just thought he like was working and forgot about it and then he called me up he's like hey man he was like I know it's been months but I think I have the money for the movie and they want you to direct it and I was like get out of here and that's the movie wound up being um you know we worked it out and I came out to Darby and we shot there we shot some of it in LA we got Stan Le in as a cameo which was awesome uh it was really cool for me because what was sweet is that it was my first movie direct well only movie direct that I did and when I reached out we didn't have a lot of money when I reached out to people to be in the movie it was really sweet cuz I didn't realize uh all the people that joined the movie was like hey man it's Muse directing his first movie want to be part of that and they jumped on Dean Kane Terry Hatcher and Stanley and uh David I can never say his name right but uh yeah it was really nice I I couldn't believe how many people agreed to be part of the movie and and they didn't get paid a whole lot they just did it because they wanted to be part of my movie and and all that stuff so you guys sort of started the Stanley Cameo thing as well and moreat was 95 and you had Stan Lee pop in and do a bit part yeah and then that became his thing well that was all Kevin honestly but yes I know I but it's cool to know that that sort of started it and then he started popping up in all the Marvel movies which is awesome and I think it's really awesome you know he really my he shot my movie F I mean last but he shot the other movie and one of his last movies shown is the Marvel movie right Miss Marvel and he's reading Captain Marvel is's reading the mulat script on the bus which is so cuz right he started his Cameo with being in M rat and then then he had like so it's really surreal I mean what a it he's awesome so and being on the directorial side of things how much of a challenge was that like did you find yourself wanting to not direct too much but did you no don't do it like that do it like this or how how did you find being a director were you able to just let the actors do their thing or did you want to put lots of input in no I definitely wanted to put input in but it was tough I feel like trying to want it really focus and I was able to focus on directing but it was tough to also try to manage that and my being in it so much of the movie like I'd get there and we'd block out the scenes and stuff and I'd like all right cool we're going to block it out here we start here the camera's here um you know and then I would be like all right I'll be back I got to go get you know wardrobe makeup and all that on and I'd go do my thing come back and I'd be trying to me making sure I have my memor dialogue memorized and such and then we we do a we' do a take and then I'd watch playback and then we do another take and I'd watch playback so it it was tough but it worked I mean again I feel like it worked out and I've gotten good feedback about it so but yeah it it would have been nice to do my first directing job just directing and getting to really like you know talk and rehearse with the actors and do all that stuff that's got to be tough as you said to direct yourself because you can't really tell yourself off yeah well and it's tough you tell yourself off too much yeah yeah and well I can't really see if I'm trying to do so it was tough to watch like try to do something and not you know got to get to see me actually play that I could with playback but it was tough to like really focus on like oh I should do it this way I should say I should have S I should have said it this way instead it would have been better because I'd be like okay I got all the beats and I look you know everything looks good so let's move on and I would focus more on whoever else was uh like the Brian of Hollin scene I think turned out great and all that so it was interesting it definitely was an interesting uh first time directing so you got directorial influences yeah do I have any yeah who's you when you see D films director you're like that's my guy no no I mean Kevin Smith I guess you know he's definitely great you know um so yeah I'll say Kevin I feel like from what from being on all Kevin's movies I really feel like I did get taken a lot from him because with Kevin what's great and I've noticed even working with doing all these other movies I've been on and stuff uh these other Indies and things that I've done is Kevin because Kevin edits his own movies and and has been directed forever and and edits his own stuff when he's when he's uh doing when he's when we're shooting he'll like go through it and he doesn't do like a like 10 takes of stuff unless he's trying to get the actor to really get to that part but I like if there's in the script it's like oh the guy runs down the stair and hops up on stage like Kevin will be like hey that's in the script but we're not shooting that because when I edit it I realize it's going to cut from out in the convention to the guys already on stage not coming through and I thought that was really helpful for me because I realized while I was while we were doing filming and stuff I'd like oh we don't need to do that because when it's edited it's going to you know be from inside of the diner out to the car and they're already in the car about the pull away you know where other if someone else is going to edit you're like oh well they might need this because we're so we better film you know them running down the stairs and we'll better film the door opening and closing an insert of this you know because you don't know what they're going to use but I feel like from working with Kevin so much and because he edits in his head while we film I feel like I took that and I was able to do the same thing sort of so it's a great director School sitting on set of a Kevin Smith film yeah it was niceo you're remarkably quiet tonight You' we've got no one at the microphones please yeah yeah well someone yeah yeah I guess before I asked in the dude was right there so what is this if you don't mind me asking this they can't see that that's for us that's uh is it a secret it's a secret they they don't need to know I'll tell you oh okay I feel like it's been the same I feel like every time I look down it's that the same number I think they turned it back up they keep turning it I think they keep turning it back up like we want to hear them all day all right let's uh let's uh we let's go with you you're all by yourself hey dude how's it going hello young man you have a question from Muse I sure do um what like you were in do you remember big money rustlers movie and I always just wondered like how did you land that role in big money rusters do you ever have like a relationship with them before that or yeah so so uh yeah the so the ICP Twisted guys uh over the years I've run into them at conventions I used to do this one comic convention it was awesome called Rock and shock um and those guys were there a few times and performed and stuff it was cool because there would be a comic uh convention all day I like this one everyone panels and stuff like that but at the end of the night when they closed they would put on like performances each night Friday Saturday Sunday night there would be gu daning uh Insane Clown posy twisted like all these different shows it was really cool so you'd go like at the end of the day go home eat and then go watch a concert and stuff so anyway I had met them a few times and yeah they brought it up but they asked like hey man we're making this movie we'd love for you to come uh do a cameo in it um big money rustlers guys is a a twisted movie it was cool I got to play Cowboy um and you know I was like oh craist up and I get shot it was the first time I got to put squibs on and like the squibs went off and stuff it was pretty it was pretty fun I had a good time actually and it's it was shot in this you know they still have this old western town in California I don't know if it's south or north or whatever but it's like a real Western there's a saloon and all that so walking through the town it's cool it's you feel like you're really like in this old western [ __ ] show and [ __ ] so it was fun I had a blast but yeah they just asked out they reached out and said hey would you be in this and I was like of course let's do it so that's cool thank you thank you hi there um so have there been any kind of memorable uh shenanigans that you've had on set any F I mean there's ton one of my favorite stories I all tell you Shenanigans it was sort of shenanigans um so when we shot Jay and Sal Bob Strike Back this is one of my favorite stories thank you um you know you in the morning you go to the track trailer you get there you go to your trailer you get your script like the sides for the day you're going to shoot scene six and scene this and then you go right into the makeup trailer and they you know you put your clothes on first sorry your wardrobe for the day and then you go in the hair of makeup and they put your makeup on and [ __ ] so you don't shine and all that good stuff on camera and they put your brush your hair and fix it however it is whatever so everyone does that is my point in the morning every actor has to stop in there and get their hair makeup and stuff like that so at at that point in time uh when we were shooting J and Bob that CD came out Shaggy so she caught me in the shower wasn't me so she CAU me in the bathroom you know and that whole CD I was like obsessed with there's like four songs back to back that I really liked and so I bought the CD and when I'd get in the makeup trailer i' like hey can you play this and they like of course so every day they would play for me so everyone I came in started hearing the songs over and over again right and so like I so like I feel like I started getting it stuck in everyone's head that was on the movie that had to go in the hair and makeup trailer and we're in that scene you know the tunnel scene it's like a parody on a fugitive it's uh J and Sal Bob and the monkey and Will Farrell and we run and we jump out of the [ __ ] tunnel the the tube and then like will farell is like oh and he runs and he's like oh oh [ __ ] and because Suzanne's holding J and Bob from the pipe and we don't really jump we he they he catches the monkey Catches Us the ape that is um anyway while we were in the tunnel on uh inside of one of the stages we were in there and they're like you block it out and they're like okay the light guys and Camera guys like okayy we have to put a couple more lights up it's too dark so give us like five minutes so we're standing around waiting and waiting and all of a sudden [ __ ] I'm like you know sitting there and I'm like and I was like singing to myself trying to keep myself busy all a sudden [ __ ] I feel my someone grab my shoulder they spin me around and I look and it's [ __ ] will frell and he grabs my hips and he goes it wasn't me and and I'm [ __ ] sitting there and I'm like dancing with old Fen in my head no lie I'm like this is [ __ ] awesome I'm dancing with will [ __ ] farell you know cuz again no lie I 30 years into this it's still surreal to me no lie and it excites me like that I get to like hang out like even these cons especially like I'll go to cons we'll go in the green room and it's like [ __ ] you know Bruce Campbell Will William Shatner and [ __ ] Vincent and offo or the hobbits or whatever you know like who and I just get uncomfortable still like I don't walk in a lot of actors I'll watch them walk in they'll sit right at a table with these guys like hey guys what's up man cool cool but I still feel feel like this is so surreal like what I'm going to say something stupid so I better leave the green room right um and it's still so my point is is like even with farell we're working with him but I [ __ ] think he's one of the funniest guys ever and I just was like this is surreal that he grabbed me and he's humming and dancing the song that I love to me and [ __ ] so anyway I I've told that a few times cuz it really is something I'll never forget like I dance will farell and I didn't I didn't grab him he grabbed me and he was Eden you know so thank you thank you thank you how was that going from J and Silent BS man it's your thanks again Jay and Silent Bob being um minor characters in other people's stories to get in your own movie how did that how did you feel about that when Kevin told you that was the next one uh it was awesome it really was I was excited because I'm like you know for me it was like wow not only am I going to be in all the scenes but I'm like my name in the title and again it's like my name's Jason but Jay whatever but I'm like well I have a movie with my name in the title which is a big deal and it was a really big deal back then for me and it still is um but yeah it was mainly that like wow I can't believe at the same time I was a little nervous like well I have to carry this movie now I have to be in and you know and I realized it as we were filming because uh especially with Chasing Amy it's like clerks I popped in I shot a couple days and then uh you know M rats I was in pretty same amount like decent Chasing Amy I was in one scene and then all a sudden now I'm in like every single scene and stuff but again I was super excited and just excited again that I'm like wow we're doing another movie with the character so now we've done clerk M chasing dog M now we're doing a fifth movie with that so and still now like every time we wind up doing one I'm like wow this is awesome like I just can't believe that you know it's been we've been lucky and blessed enough that you guys continue to watch the movies um and come to our podcast and our standup comedy amusing stories or the conventions and come see us so thank you guys very much thank you thank you should we have number one uh well let's move right well yeah we went there last right so yes number one hello um one of my favorite movies is Dogma um I'm wondering um what was um filming it be what was it like basically um it was again always fun for me it was really great because I got to go out early with Kevin um like well not I I got to but at the same time I had to um we've shared it before on the podcast but I was really messed up right before dogma and it was and Kevin's like I was trying to get sober to get to go on do the movie because I was such a mess so Kevin's like Hey we're going to do this movie and if you want to do it we really need you to like be sober and be better and stuff like that so he's like I want you to hang with me so I can help you know stick around with you and be there and [ __ ] for you and I was like that's great it's a great deal so I lived with Kevin in Jersey for like a month before that and then he's like well I have to go to Pittsburgh now um because excuse me cuz you know as a director he had to look for location scouting and meet with people in the wardrobe and do all this stuff so I went out with Kevin like way before any anyone really had to be out there any of the actors or anything um so I went out and I got to hang out with Kevin and see like another side of the movies because in the other movies I never was in the office like the office like seeing how like when he meets with production and and being like hey here this is what we're going to do here's the days out of days and um here's the locations which ones do you like best wardrobe and like getting to pick the costumes I got to I got to watch the whole process um and that was really cool for me and I feel like I learned a bunch from that and then also I was there for all the rehearsals but at the same time Kevin said hey man like while you're out here he's like don't just sit around read your script memorize your dialogue because we're working with Allan Rickman all right and he's a British actor he does not [ __ ] around right he really did and I was like get out of here what do you mean he's like he's like he's British dude don't you get it they're [ __ ] they're thesbian like that's serious [ __ ] right there right he's like so you don't want to [ __ ] up in front of you know Allen if you're doing a scene with him and you flub a line or mess up a line he's going to get upset about it cuz he's serious and he's really good and I'm like all right all right so I kept reading my part reading my part and I have read my part so much and I was there for so much time while some of the stuff of course Kevin was dealing with I didn't really have like I'd sit there but I didn't have anything to like put into the conversation cuz he'd be like all right we're going to go over the each line by line of this and I would like all right I'll be waiting out here reading the script so by the time we started filming I had read the script because that's all I had to do was hang with Kevin go listen to some of the meetings and learn some [ __ ] and read the script right and so by the time we got there Kevin we we he tells the story better because it was from him but I remember we were rehearsing Kevin brought all the actors out now about 10 days before we started filming um and we would rehearse Jason Lee and and uh Matt and Ben came and all these a bunch of the actors came to start rehearsing and stuff and I remember one day like one of the it was like we got done a little early with one of the actors and so he was like man he's like I we got to wait a half hour and he's like but he's like Jay will you read the script and he's like do you have your script with you I was like well I don't have the script actually physical script with me but I was like I already know their part so I can read it he's like well what do you mean how you going to read their part with without the script and I was like I have it memorized he's like no [ __ ] way and I'm like I'm serious and I because I had read it so much I literally had memorized the whole entire script like everyone's part right cuz I just kept reading it and reading it and reading it because I was so nervous about [ __ ] up in front of Helen Rickman and stuff um anyway so it was fun I mean I had a blast I got to like do things I hadn't done before like we got to I got to shoot the uzi which was I mean again it's just simple little thing but when I'm like no more boy no I'm like count the shell sucker duck you know and then backing it runs out and I'm like no more Bulls you know um I had a blast shooting that movie but I really have had so much fun with all the movies shooting it working with Kevin on all the movies because we've known each other and we work together so much it's just always like camp and a lot of times he especially for the first all we have to Jay and Bob I would say he hired a lot of the same people was like the same DP the same like uh first ad second ad script supervisor you know whoever he could hire back would come back so it's like all sudden we shoot M rats and we're hanging out for two months we don't see them for about a year and a half and then we shoot Chasing Amy and everyone's around for like two months and then you know so every time you shoot it's like camp and stuff so I've had a I've had so much fun honestly with all the movies and especially Dogma like I said because of that and I got to work with alen Rick which was amazing and Chris Rock and it was fun lots of fun I hope that answered your question sorry thank you do you find people come up to you with different movies and be like oh man this is like what's the most common movie out of all of the Jay and Silent Bob films where someone comes and goes man Dogma my jam or M rat is the one that sticks out more than the others yeah I definitely feel like I feel like if the last couple years just say I feel like people doing the conventions people seem to really like in my come up to me and tell me anyway that their favorite is seems to be mo rats or Dogma right all right y yep yep yep um but yeah no it does it seems like M rats or Dogma seems like the two that really for me that people seem to come up and say are their favorite so Liverpool if I'm statistically correct is the most Catholic city in the United Kingdom so I wouldn't be surprised if like people Dogma for everyone yeah oh yeah yeah yes nice nice yeah and we we were all raised like strict Irish Catholic well and hopefully you know I've I've I've told people when they come to the table and I'm sure you've heard before you know the reason you the bummer is you don't get to see Dogma on like Netflix or prime or any of this stuff and you know Kevin loves doing the like the 20 20th anniversary clerks Edition you know the doing all the like the special stuff in the back with like um you know commentary and all this Dogma we haven't done anything or he hasn't done anything or we whatever um we haven't been able to because it's not like all the other ones it's like mirax is owned or Universal and stuff like that and they've gone and they've licensed it to Netflix but Harvey Weinstein actually owns Dogma so we haven't been able to that's why you guys don't see it out there there's no re no new release of a 20th anniversary or 25th whatever um and there's not on Prime so hopefully eventually I'm assuming he's going to wind up selling it and hopefully it'll get out and we'll be able to see it on Prime and all of that stuff and do some kind of special edition I think with you it's it's an incredible piece of film you're incredible piece of film this is this is going this is going better than I hoped there it goes yes sir hi Jason how you doing first time seeing you so fantastic oh thank you I have to say that my favorite film is stri back because I think that you're one of the best comedy actors I've ever seen in my lifetime and no honestly well thank you thank you I kind of want to touch back on the strikes back cuz you kind of mentioned it earlier like what was that process like for you because you went from small roles to slightly bigger roles to Leading the movie like were you not nervous because I know that you were you know back at the very start in clerks and stuff you you know you would have been nervous and things like that so you know how did they experience take you through the years to strikes back and what was it like Filman strike back yeah I I mean again super fun for me for strike back we got to stay out we went out to um we were out in California um and what was awesome is I got Kevin they rented a house uh for Kevin and his family and then there was a guest house and I stayed in the guest house right there so again I just hung out with Kevin a bunch and we'd go I'd get to go to the office and hang out and stuff uh it was it was great but yes I was nervous and I'll be honest because yet again I had like it after getting back from dogma and stuff I had gotten back and and getting real personal whatever but I always share stuff on our podcast and all this but my mom had just passed away before J and Bob so like I was already using drugs don't get me wrong but I got like even more like I got heavier into drugs so like I freaking when I got really bad at this point and Kevin like we're supposed to go do this movie like you need to get better and sober and you're coming to LA with me and you're going to stay with me for again a couple months so again that made it me a little more ner because I was like sort of trying to stay sober and I was withdrawing and all this stuff from from opiates um but after I started physically feeling better and we started going through the script and rehearsing and all of that I guess I was sort of nervous cuz again I had to carry the movie but as at the same time I got to work on it and be around and with Kevin all the time and really go over it um the script over and over I didn't memorize that one there was a lot more stuff for me to do but um but yeah it was just it was a blast man getting to work with Will Farrell and then uh like Jud Nelson and going out to like that diner with the with the with the monkey and stuff like that I mean it was just awesome it really is it's a lot of fun making movies in general but with that one just like we went all over shooting in different locations and stuff some of them's long like when we went to go to you know when the get riding in the band with uh what's his name what one of the times I like Kevin got actually got a little bummed because I couldn't stop laughing and we had to keep doing takes is when uh Sean Williams Scott I don't know why I always blank on his name but when he had like the thing in and I was like if you were a sheep would you [ __ ] a sheep and he's like he's like you got a weird sense of human little boy or whatever he says right he [ __ ] made me laugh so hard when he's like of course you know and I started laughing really hard and we I messed up the takes so we had to do it again and and I tried it again and I just could not stop laughing you know like when you start laughing and you're laughing so hard that you start to tear up and stuff and then people around you start laughing so then you laugh harder and then they laugh even harder and back and like it really kept I kept messing up finally I was like I got to take a second I got to to think a second so we had to wait a minute to start shooting and I finally got through it um but yeah so much fun driving in that van with Sean Williams Scott um and like doing that scene and talking about the [ __ ] like I'm GNA get some [ __ ] for miling a monkey you know uh it was fun it really was I I had a really good time all of them though again all of them I've I've had a really good time shooting with Zach andiri Make a Porno blast we were out in Pittsburgh and stuff and and I got to play a different character but again it was Kevin's movie and he's directing so it's fun um so yeah I I really have had a good I I can't really say I've had any bad you know besides some of my stuff with like struggling with the drugs and stuff uh uh there's been a few movies like by the end of Dogma like I had by the very end of dogma and stuff I was sober for almost the whole like the last week I started messing up again like I found some oxy and I started messing up and I drank and you know but for the most part everything else was has been so much fun and and have had a blast on all of them so listen Jason thank you very much thank you thank you very much I think I just filled the cup yes sir Jay follow Derby guy here um you mentioned addiction and I know one of the things to help you with your addiction was looking for certain toys you'd go out and do you still do that and is there anything you're after no I don't I don't I wish I did you know if I lived in Jersey I feel like I probably would like try to get toys and exclusives for the store and stuff but I don't get to now and things are a lot different like with the kids because now I'm using with the one of the kids and not so much my boy he's only 14 months but if I'm with my daughter dude I I try all the time like hey we had you're going to a birthday party for your schoolmate you know she gets invited to her friends from school's Birthday and I'll be like we have to go get so and so a birthday present and she'll be like well I want to go and I'll be like cool you can help me pick out what you think they would like and every time she's like I mean get that for them but what I think I need one too you know and I cannot like she never not wants that too she's 9 years old and so I feel like if I went hunting for like stuff for the store it would always wind up in her room and [ __ ] so it would be fun though it's like I still find myself looking at stuff been going wow that looks like a rare one like I wonder if that's hard to get and should I grab it and see if you know Mike needs it at the store and I could send it there and stuff it's still there but that that was that was another fun little period where Kevin and I would go hunting for all the Star Wars exclusives like there'd be one out of the six you know it was such a blast same with the cons like every con I'd go to for years I would come home with so much stuff it was awesome just recently I freaking sent a bunch of I found I was we moved me and we moved about a year and a half ago and I found a box full of Lego mini figs still in the blister and they were from San Diego ComicCon like [ __ ] 2019 or whatever and no lie like one of them I one of them sold at the store was like a th000 bucks right and then two of the other ones were like 500 bucks I'm like holy [ __ ] Lego minifigure exclusives like you know what I mean but I'm just saying like I used to love it I'd go to cons and I'd buy stuff like left and right um but anyway yeah so I still enjoy it I just now look and I like the five things I want I might get the one like if it's something like all right I've been looking at this at the last five places um but it is fun it's it's a it's a fun little thing so but now I got two kids is it a fun little thing is it fun it is hey kids how are you I thought it's so funny I thought that was is fun Jack me up thank you hey man how's everybody doing sorry I was late I was signing a bunch of [ __ ] don't mean to interrupt but I'm sure he's told you all about his dick so now it's my turn I was literally done with that quit the answer I hope he's happy with that we were talking about hunting down for the greo dolls and how much fun it was but I said I can't do that anymore cuz now I'm usually with the kids and Logan's always like I want that I want that so but yeah back in the day when we used to do it he was the kid that was like I want that that and I was the parent um hey man I just want to uh before we go further I just want to tell you a quick [ __ ] story um that has been amusing the [ __ ] out of me um I have I live in Los Angeles as does he um the house I live in I bought from uh Ben Affleck 22 years ago he lived in it for eight months I've lived in it for 22 years we still refer to it as Ben's house um so we've been in Ben's house for over two decades and it's got this giant green front door it's like something out of Louis Carol it's [ __ ] huge right very tall about three people tall and [ __ ] but no peephole so if somebody's at the door you don't know who the [ __ ] is there right so I was in my office which is on the same floor as the front door um down the hallway and I hear a doorbell and I'm like oh hopefully somebody will get it nobody lives with us anymore so I was like [ __ ] it's me and so I got up I go to the front door open the front door and and [ __ ] and like I'm always worried about home invasion because since we can't see outside I just have to open the door to see outside anybody could bum rush into the place so I'm careful when I open the door I open the door real carefully and what do I see outside two Los Angeles Police Department officers two cops on my front steps I'm like hi instantly I'm going what the [ __ ] did I do um I was like hey what's up and they're like hi um we there's a woman who was sitting in a car in the neighborhood and she got out she's older and she's lost now and she may be you know a bit um on the on the um seile side so the people who she was with with they're worried they didn't know which way she went we see you have a camera on your house I was like yeah I got a security camera on the house he goes we saw that he goes can we look at your footage to see if the woman walked past and I was like oh my God yes absolutely in fact like my my security thing is on my phone so let me pull it up I'll pull up the video and we can scroll through it and he's like that's excellent I said I know about all this [ __ ] cuz I watch TV and he goes yes of course and so I pull up my thing I'm scrolling through it and like I got they tell me I got the best system that money could buy and [ __ ] and yet I cannot pull up this clip to save my life I could try to scrub through it and what not it just goes into thinking mode and the other officer is like um standing there he's like should I move my car should I pull my car closer to your house cuz the car was there with the lights on and stuff I was like yeah just to by by way of traffic I guess you pull it right into the driveway and then the second cop looks at me and both of these cops I swear to God like when I opened the door I thought it was trick- or treat cuz they look like they're 22 years old and then I realize oh I'm just old and everybody's young now and [ __ ] so these two Junior cops are standing there and whatnot and the guy goes can I pull close to the driveway I said yeah go ahead and then he looks at me and does a double take and he goes holy [ __ ] are you Kevin Smith and I was like holy [ __ ] how does someone so young know who I am and then the other guy the other cop was like yeah it's [ __ ] Kevin Smith man didn't you see that the moment he opened the door and I was like they both know who I am this is [ __ ] awesome so I was like look why don't we go inside we go to my office and we could look at the computer as plugged in not on my phone and [ __ ] I bet you we could get the image better and they said okay and so I lead him into the house and as I'm talking to him I noticed like in I don't know if it's the same over here but back home every police officer now has a camera like on their chest so no matter what you're doing or you're interacting with them there's video of it but my [ __ ] like I saw I sitting there chitchatting with him and then I saw the camera and suddenly I got aware of it and the weirdest [ __ ] thing happened instantly I sucked my gut in and I was like y officer was this way I brought him to my office and whatnot pulled up my laptop was scrolling through to try to find the footage and [ __ ] and they got you know the walkie talkies they wear like full outfit and [ __ ] and they get the walkie-talkies that are right here they talk into and [ __ ] all a sudden this guy one of them is and the guy goes and he turns to the other guy and he goes a shooting down in Hollywood and Hollywood's like two blocks away and [ __ ] and I was like seriously he's like yeah it's a rough town then out of nowhere I swear to Christ all of a sudden I heard come off his chest and I was like did somebody just get [ __ ] shot and he goes no sorry that's my ringtone and he pulls his phone out I was like do you don't you think that's a rather unsafe ringtone he goes it's from Lethal Weapon um but in any of oh [ __ ] did Jay leave [ __ ] um anyway that was just a story about what I I've been up to before I came over here and let's turn it over to y'all I see people standing at mics you might be like I didn't have a question for you it was for the other guy and [ __ ] but I could probably answer it yes I'm still here don't worry I just oh thank God I thought I was alone all these people um go ahead or no never mind you go ahead cuz you're looking like don't [ __ ] pick me is that what that look was about you want me to go there that's either way you can go ahead fair enough we'll start there but we are coming back to you the eye of Sauron will fall on you and [ __ ] it's [ __ ] funny cuz there are hoppets in the building yes so I have your name my name's Joe and I to Joe what Joe j o Joe everyone give it up for Joe Joe's next so I have to ask this cuz it's one of my favorite TV series but what was it like filming on deg Grassi the Next Generation [ __ ] amazing um him and I had been grassy fan since I worked at quickstop I used to go to uh the the store in the movies and what that I that I worked at on Sunday mornings the Sunday newspaper was thick as a [ __ ] dick um The New York Times is like this and it comes in back in the day it came in like nine different sections that you got throughout the week and then on Sunday the front page [ __ ] came and then you had to put all the papers together so I'd ask my friends to come help me because I'd go down to work Sunday 5:30 in the morning and [ __ ] and I asked Brian and Walter be like hey you want to come down help me make papers like [ __ ] no Jay I would be like you want to come down help me make papers I'll give you two bucks and he was like okay so Jay would come down with me and we'd make the papers I pick him up at his P 5:30 in the morning and [ __ ] we go to the Quick Stop which was only last three miles from where we live make the papers and [ __ ] once all the papers were done we'd watch TV and on TV they were doing reruns of the show that we used to watch uh called Silver Spoons years and years ago so we'd watch that but they ran like back to back half hours and then after that it was over and Sunday morning without cable we just had like a TV with raber ears and you turn the dial and [ __ ] old school TV black and white on Sunday morning nothing to watch but [ __ ] Church programming like tons of Jesus all over the air and stuff we weren't looking for that so we start clicking around look for anything we fell on PBS which is public broadcasting system and they were airing this show which turned out to be deg Grassi I guess the deg Grassi High not there were two shows there was deg Grassi Junior High and then deg grassy High so I guess we tuned in for the second half hour and it was the grassy um High half hour so first they do episode to grassy jior High then they did to grassy High we didn't know any of this all we knew is there were young kids on TV and that beat somebody talking about Jesus so we started watching it and [ __ ] now as we're watching it it's set in Canada as you well know and stuff and back then not so much the Next Generation but deg Grassi Junior High and Degrassi High one of the Novelties of the show was that they can't asked real kids the kids look like kids they didn't look like they belong on TV they look like they belong sitting next to you in a classroom so they were very identifiable it was really really cool so as we're watching the show we're like what the [ __ ] there's like all these people look like they're people in in our town they don't look like TV people and why are they talking like that like everyone's saying a and stuff like that oh my God this is so stupid and we made fun of it we hate watched it for about 15 minutes then all of a sudden one of the Canadian girls is like I'm getting an abortion eh and we were like what the [ __ ] because this is like at a time they didn't do that on on program like 90210 existed they didn't talk about abortion and [ __ ] like that suddenly the show got real and we were like oh [ __ ] and we got way into the soap opera of it man like one of the two twins Heather and Erica was getting get an abortion bunch of people confronting her she went in the scene in Dogma where like all the protesters are out in front of the abortion clinic came Del lifted from deg Grassi high like I've never gone through something like that my life but I saw it on a TV and I was like [ __ ] I'll put that in my movie and [ __ ] so we loved to grassy in a big bad way every week we'd make the papers and then sit there from 11: till noon and watch it like it was our soap operas and then you know what was it I I guess when we made M rats um I was in Canada I was in Toronto before we Shot the movie and I looked for playing with time Productions a company that made the show years ago it had been off the air for a while and I was like I'm looking for a deg grassy uh high school jacket cuz I'm making this movie called M rats and I want Shannon dhy to wear it in the movie because 90210 was ripped off of Degrassi and I think it'd be a cool kind of inside joke and uh nobody there had had anything like they were like we don't know who you are we can't help you and [ __ ] so in Canada they had this thing called uh Speakers Corner where you can go into the City and City TV is one of their networks there's a booth you sit in the booth you put in a tuny a $2 coin and you can say whatever [ __ ] you want for like two minutes and then they would pick the best and put them on TV and [ __ ] like that now I've come to know those people over the years and whatnot cuz I did it I went to the booth and I put in a tuny and I recorded this thing where I was like hey man I made a movie called clerks we're about to make a movie called M rats I'm looking for a de grassy jacket but nobody has I reached out for playing playing with time Productions they didn't have it if anybody out there has a jagy let me know and so the people that put that program together were like holy [ __ ] the clerk's guy just [ __ ] did one of these videos and so we became friends and [ __ ] and they told me about speaker Corner man like I went in there and used it properly Dropped In A Thing said my issue he's like you're one of three people this week that spoke in Speaker's Corner I was like what do they normally do he goes oh [ __ ] I was like serious he's like they drop a tuni in they [ __ ] in front of the camera I was like that's so American he goes no that's Canadian my friend so because of that thing uh Linda Skyler who created the grassy Universe reached out to me and she was like oh I have I saw you on TV asking about a jacket I have one and they sent sent me one and it was like a windbreaker from the early 80s and it never would have worked in the movie it wouldn't have matched anything Shannon never would have worn it or anything like that so I was like [ __ ] man but Shannon uh her deal said that she could pick out all her own wardrobe because she got to keep it and [ __ ] so she went out and picked out her wardrobe with the Wardrobe lady and then uh I asked the costume designer Dina I was like hey man did she get a jacket and she yeah there's a jacket she where she while she's walking around shopping I was like can we put this Degrassi logo on the back like Stitch our own logo and she's like yeah I guess and so we stitched it in so the jacket that that Shannon wears in M Rat Say to grassy on it and stuff that was the jacket except Shannon didn't know again she got to keep her own wardrobe and [ __ ] so she comes smoking up to me the day we're going to shoot the scene she was like what the [ __ ] is it to grassy and I was like oh it's this awesome show that me and Jay used to watch she goes I don't give a [ __ ] why is it on the back of my jacket and I was like oh because it's my movie and so and so she wore it and in the movie and then she took it home and was all done so the World At Large knew that I was a deg grassy fan I'd put it out there over the years when we were making Jay and Sil and Bob stke back they reached out and they were like we're making a new version of deassis called the Next Generation we would like you to play there's a reporter who's at the school interviewing kids in the first episode and uh I wanted to do it but we were making strike back so I was like there's no way I can get up there I'm so sorry and whatnot so months went by maybe a year year and a half went by and de grassy the Next Generation started airing and I never really saw it and I remember being against the idea not publicly where I was one of those [ __ ] but I remember hearing about it and being like why would you touch that show it's [ __ ] perfect you don't need to go back to that they're going to ruin it by touching and [ __ ] so I never looked at it then about a year and a half after it started running I happened to cross it one day on TV and I saw that they were including the kids from our version of Degrassi Joey Jeremiah Was there Caitlyn Ryan [ __ ] snake Spike who was a girl in in high school who had a baby and um on the old show her baby grew up to be the kid in high school and she was the focus of the whole show so I was like this is genius man like [ __ ] like I can't believe they did it they stuck the landing and [ __ ] so I saw what they were doing with two of my favorite characters Joey Jeremiah and Caitlyn Ryan they were the starcross couple in high school and [ __ ] like that and it looked like they were moving them toward making them a couple in the new version and [ __ ] so I reached out to uh epitome which is Linda's company at that point and I said can I talk to Linda scholar and they got me she's like hello and I was like hey this is Kevin Smith and like I just I'm a huge grassy fan you sent me that jaet from M rats years ago and any event I've Been Watching Next Generation you guys asked me to do a part and I couldn't do it and I'm now I hate myself because I love your [ __ ] show like it's fantastic man I see what you're doing with Joey and Caitlyn you're gonna get them together I said I would kill or die to write and direct those episodes and Linda Skyler goes who is this and I was like I'm Kevin Smith I made clerk she go oh that's right you like our show I was like yeah very much and stuff and she goes well I would love for you to do that Kevin but I don't know if you know this or not all of Degrassi is funded by the Canadian government we get Arts grants up here we don't have Studios and whatnot so in order to qualify for those grants all the key roles have to be filled by Canadians so I would love for you to write and direct but you can't because you're not Canadian and it was [ __ ] heartbreaking because I've been told no many times in my life but not for that reason nobody's ever said you can't because you're not Canadian you know my [ __ ] wife adopted it so quick because after she saw it worked and [ __ ] I was like let's [ __ ] she's like you can't because you're not Canadian so so um I you know she goes well but we could always have you Cameo on the show and I was like you want me to be in grassy I was like oh that's even better [ __ ] directing you know so uh she said yeah and I was like all right man well I'll send you a thing I'll send you my idea she's like what idea I was like you'll see and I hung up and then I wrote the outline of the episodes a three episode Arc that I put myself into which I wasn't even offered but I was like [ __ ] it let's do it and then I faxed it to them that's how long ago it was I faxed it to them and then I never heard back they never [ __ ] called never said anything and I just assumed that she was walking around the offices with this fact going you know that guy who made clerks this is what he wants to do to our show isn't this [ __ ] up he wants to be in it and [ __ ] like that what a dick so three months later Linda Skyler calls me and I was like H hi and she goes Kevin if you're going to come up and be in the show you have to approve the scripts and we have to finalize your deal because it happens in two weeks and I was like what are you talking about and she's like you said you were going to be on the show and you sent us that outline and I said yeah and they're like well we wrote that into three scripts and I was like get the [ __ ] out of here I was like oh my God and I'd written this version of myself because I wanted to interact with the Caitlyn Ryan character I wanted to come between her and Joey so the version of myself that I've written everything about me is the exact same except I never got married and I never had a kid so I went up and I was able to them be romantically involved with a fictional character and [ __ ] so I went and did the first episode and then flew home and my wife was like how was it and I was like oh my God it was everything I dreamed about she's like and you're playing yourself and I was like I mean I'm playing a version of myself she's like what does that mean I was like well it's me but I've never been married and I never had a kid and she looked at me so [ __ ] sad and she was like I can't believe you let them write me out of your life and I was like I know those [ __ ] Canadians right like [ __ ] I'll fix this and [ __ ] so then we went back all of us like me and Jay cuz he was in the next two episodes I I appeared in the first part by myself and then we came up with a production the idea was we were shooting a movie in Canada called Jay and Silent Bob go Canadian a and that put us into the halls of Degrassi and [ __ ] like that so when him and I got to go up there and like not only be in the show but be in the show as our characters this is a [ __ ] closed closing a circle that started back in like 1990 when we would sit there and watch the show it was absolute [ __ ] Bliss man and then they were going to make it to grassy movie and at one point they were like we want you to direct it and it came close Paramount was going to make it and stuff and then I went off and made another movie they made the movie as a series of episodes called the grassy goes Hollywood or something in which Jay played the director of a movie based on his own life and then I would pop in and offer advice via Zoom or something like that so I had my own Grand Arc where I got to be like a real character on grassy and then he had his own arc where he got to be a character on grassy and it's crazy because like you know i' I've been in the business 30 years at this point this is the 30th anniversary of Clerks this year the 30th anniversary of Jane silin Bob so we've been around for like three decades that's very kind thank you um so that's just a way of saying that we've done a bunch of [ __ ] things there's a bunch of things you can recognize me from and for for example today as I've been signing things it's like watching my entire life pass before my eyes I watch myself go like this and like this like shrink and get huge and Shrink again and whatnot it is crazy of all the things that I've ever done though I could always pick people as they come up to me and know what they're about to say not specifically but I'm like this is a j and Sal Bob person this is a person who loves the podcast uh this I could tell this one love Liv Free or Die Hard and [ __ ] like that I can pick the Degrassi people out they they all look like you they all look like you and as they come up I'm like this is a person who knows me from one thing only and they'll come up and be like years ago you were on a show called deg grassy and I was like I was on that show and [ __ ] so it's a big part of our mythology uh even though we didn't create it or anything like that and and one of those things that like I used the job some people use the job right some people use it for sex some people use for [ __ ] partying get a lit and drugs and [ __ ] like that I used it to get to De grassy you know that I used my juice and people were like what are you going to do with this juice man you want to [ __ ] a model I'm like no I want to go to Degrassi Junior High um but that's all the Degrassi I got thank you I don't know if you want guys thank you so much I'll see you at my table after you're done talking to Kevin and such thank you so much give it up for Jason bill go J the monitor here is telling me I have less than a minute so we're going to hit you real quick man what's your name hi I'm Abby what is it Abby Abby give it up for Abby Abby's gonna finish this out all right ABS what do you want to know so it being your 30-year anniversary does it feel like you're looking back watching an autobiography I can't understand your British accent Abby I I am actually from the states I'm from Georgia yes um so wait go ahead uh 30 30th Anniversary go ahead does it feel like y'all are watching your own lives or does it feel like you're like watching a character you created because y'all are the character y'all are Jane T Bob what a uh insulting thing to say no what a um what an observant and excellent question um how do I interact with the movies um I I mean I'm fully aware that I make them and stuff so I know that you know I have a role in all this and whatnot but you know the story of Jane s and Bob which honestly I thought would be not even a story but a few scenes in the first movie we made became this ongoing you know soap opera where I've now gotten to develop the characters you know in the beginning they were just meant to be [ __ ] joke generators and stuff but by the time we get to like reboot like you get to see Jay grow as a as a character and so and even by the time we get to clerks 3 like there was some weird maturity to them mixed in with all the immaturity as well so I I loved I've loved watching them grow um I've loved watching Silent Bob shrink um you know it's like sometimes I look at the movies and I'm very big and the more recent ones you know he may be heavier than me which is kind of nice a nice turnabout and fair play and he's pretty damn [ __ ] thin to begin with um you know I look at them as kids all the movies and all the characters um that's that's my world that's where I go to get away from everything if life sucks and life often does if life gets dark and life often does um if I'm filled with anxiety because the future that's over there is full of anxiety and the past is full of depression and it's important to stay out of those two places and it's difficult when you're a filmmaker because your job is to Envision the future right you're like I'm dreaming up something that don't [ __ ] exist so being in the future is is Shifty for me I went to like a Insane Asylum last year because of [ __ ] like that being in the past is depressive for me being in the moment Here and Now mindfulness this is it this is all I can control I can't control that I can't control that I can control maybe this moment or something like that more importantly I should appreciate this moment as opposed to living in the past or wondering about the future but over the course of 30 years they have kept me in the moment and they have kept me um out of my head and out of my heart in places when maybe I shouldn't be there because I'm not feeling especially bright or something like that being able to write the vus universe is being able to create a world where everything kind of works out you know you don't have to worry about death so much unless you saw Clerk's 3 um you don't have to worry about the things that most people worry about man and you go in there I go in there and I just I've met so many people today who are like your movies man like your movie is the movie that saved my life and I'm like you saved your life I said but honestly like I know what you mean when you talk about the movies they're my safe place as well so I love them to death I love them like [ __ ] kids um at the same time like I I use them I don't use my kid right I got one kid and I've never used her and [ __ ] but the movies I use I get from one to the other to [ __ ] they've financed my entire life it's how I pay my bills and [ __ ] like that and I always felt weird about that because um it's I was given uh you know this this ability I don't know if it's a gift but I was given this ability a long time ago to make [ __ ] up and make it work right like writing and stuff creative writing I started doing when I was 11 years old maybe even younger and it's the thing that has um kept me going sustained me throughout this entire life um but sometimes you know as you're sitting there it's the place to get away from from everybody else uh to get away from the things that are kind of chasing you and [ __ ] like that and then I use it like for a living and it always bugged me because something so precious that gives me a safe haven away from the world I prostitute on a regular basis like I'm like hey man you like my story how much you know and it's been weird and I knew it going into this that this was a business and then I would be making a living hopefully that was the dream off of for lack of a better expression my art but it sometimes feels weird to sell off parts of real estate that you know you're going to need personally as well cuz it's not just like like I I write this [ __ ] or make this [ __ ] because it's my living I make it to keep me sane and so there's sometimes you know is this for me or is this for them and lately the older I've gotten I've started doing more for me [ __ ] you'll never see [ __ ] that I just write that like you maybe journaling kind of stuff but I used to write for the pure joy of writing and then for a long period of time I would write because somebody would give me a lot of money to do so and now now I find that there's a balance you know I'll I'll write for somebody else or I'll write to make a movie or something but it's important that I continue writing for myself me the writer me started this journey long before filmmaker me came onto the scene and long after they stop me from making movies in this business I will still have the ability to write so that that thing that nurtured me you ever read that [ __ ] book The Giving Tree it's like that like I've used writing my entire life and now I'm 53 and now I use it to sit down and kind of not so much relax but rehab if you will um does that make sense God that was way too serious an answer um but but I will I here I'll I'll finish up with something I hope is [ __ ] funny um my kid entered the Arts as well like I raised my kid in a way where I never said you should do this [ __ ] my father never said that to me my father would take me to the movies every [ __ ] week we'd watch movies never once was he like you could do this because we didn't come from that world man in the 70s and the 80s you didn't tell kids they can reach for the stars and [ __ ] like my father would be like see that mountain never climb it you like you'll [ __ ] fall you know kind of [ __ ] so my father took me to the movies all the time never once said you could do this kind of [ __ ] now I was the different dad and it wasn't that he was like he didn't believe in me we just didn't come from a place where dreams came true and [ __ ] like that I did you know and so when I had a kid I was like [ __ ] man I'm going to tell this kid exactly what I told myself which is like you can do you can be and do anything you want in this life so long as it's not flying without jet propulsion you can't do that but other than that [ __ ] shoot for the moon and stuff and so you know when the kid was growing up when she was little she loved my wife like Jennifer Jennifer hung the moon and I was just like hello Dad you know and I told Jen I was like you should really enjoy this like I was never jealous I was like I didn't bump into it at all I was like soak it up and eny enjoy this I was like because the day the kid figures out what I do for a living I will become the favorite parent you know and eventually she did and [ __ ] and sure enough she gravitated to my world where she loves acting and stuff she felt the call so the kid um she's been in some of the movies we've made she's been in quinton's movie she was once upon a time in Hollywood she's got herself building a career man I'm happy for her and [ __ ] but I keep trying to put her in my stuff and she really doesn't like she's like thanks thanks but I've been in so many Kevin Smith movies you know so um she came over the other day and uh you know we do a podcast together but she didn't come over to do that she just Bomb by the house and [ __ ] like that and I was like hey what's up and she's like is Mom here and I was like yeah of course Mom's here F mom never leaves she goes upstairs and [ __ ] she's like I'm going to see Mom I said why she's like I just came to see Mom I'm like all right [ __ ] go ahead I guess so she went up and they were in the library for like an hour together and [ __ ] and like you know since I wasn't the center of attention eventually I came open the door I was like what's going on in here and I walked in and I found [ __ ] the most disturbing image I've seen in my life it was my kid and my wife and they were reading dialogue and rehearsing a scene together and I was so crushed because I was like what the [ __ ] is this I was like there's two people live in this house you picked the one that is not the filmmaker to rehearse with like [ __ ] why wouldn't you ask me and she's like like well I I wanted to rehearse I didn't want to be directed so to speak and I was like fair enough man I was like but you know not for nothing I was the one that encourag you to go in the Arts man and I I've worked with a lot of you know I directed Ben affle I was [ __ ] and then finally the kid gets real frustrated she goes dad the scene involved me giving a [ __ ] and I was like well then talk to your mother she's [ __ ] excellent at this kind of [ __ ] ladies and gentlemen you had a good time this evening yes we got one more day of a Liverpool ComiCon let's enjoy it together man thanks for coming out tonight I love you all good night go Kevin
