hello viewers were back in the bag a bunker kitchen for Sony's of the seventies and I noticed that quite a few of you have been saying yeah but you didn't really eat those sandwiches in the seventies well I'm afraid we did and for that reason really I and indeed Tom cameraman are not very good judges of these things because they're not very nice obviously but they are familiar so we thought as an experiment for this episode we would make sarnies of the seventies using someone who hadn't even been conceived that not even as a possibility it is dr tribe and food tribes head of digital marketing tight enough close enough lucy Brad welcome born in 2001 1998 1998 19 1988 so your generation Zed yeah and I seem to remember you saying that you had never made a sandwich or you've only made one sandwich in the last 10 years about 10 years ago what do you actually eat takeaways takeaways good well that's the modern way and I'm not going to object to it but I've got a an interesting challenge for you today and it is quite an important one it's egg versus egg okay the egg sandwich was very important in the early 70s one of the reasons of that is the egg itself to some people were still something of a miracle there were people who had been born and brought up during the war who believed that egg was a type of powder and then they discovered it's an actual three-dimensional thing that comes out of a chicken's ass so we made sandwiches with them we made sandwiches with them on white bread as usual and we didn't simply put the egg in the sandwich with a bit of Lurpak Sparrow double butter there it is for you we mix the egg with salad group salad cream thank you sorry why's that so slippery sandwich spread nobody knows exactly what sandwich spread is I don't have my glasses on so I can't read the ingredients but salad cream is the thinking persons alternative to mayonnaise which is foreign and sandwich spread is anything that you might have put in the sandwich in the 70s all mixed together in a paste was not even a paste it's a what would you call it it's a gloop quite a lot of which is probably been hit with salad cream anyway we'll find out you have to eggs which you have to peel their pre boiled for about five and a half minutes and then flash chilled in the hope that the shell will come off more easily chop those up you have two bowls you mix one chopped egg with a nice healthy blob salad cream the other one with a nice healthy blob of sandwich spread you put Lurpak spreadable butter on one side of your sandwich made with this absolutely normal hospital issue white bread put them together and then you test them on me go okay I'll start the egg you want that slice don't you want it I think the way I remember it was sort of chopped up into bits about as big as your little fingernail okay and life has few pleasures to equal peeling a boiled egg especially if it comes across comes apart nicely yes good technique I've broken the egg well it doesn't matter you're gonna chop it up anyway okay don't do the other one so it takes this time when you do a better job than they aren't yeah oh they go will are you gonna beat me now there we were just mock you gently later I like it went yeah when the end comes off in one go like that there you go now what we should do here to make this authentically 70s is use an egg slicer which is a device a little bit like a multiple cheese wire and it sits on top of a little base which has an indentation and it roughly the shape of an egg you put the egg in it pull the handle down you have a sliced up egg we were going to buy one of those we found one online that was in a 70's style and it was Lucy Brown's job to order it and have it delivered but she failed not because she's generations ed or anything like that I wouldn't say that it's simply because she's a slacker that's me so while you do that oh no people never do which is tidy up so chop it up that looks excellent same again for that one in that bowl I'll shake the salad cream for you you don't shake sandwich spread but I'll take the lid off and make sure there isn't some ludicrous no there isn't security seal on it your ingredients are ready a little spoon and then put the salad cream in one and the sandwich spread and the other plenty of it how about the curling I would say a little bit more a little bit more that's about right it's that's chopped up boiled egg hard-boiled egg well they did sustain people quite effectively in the 1970s packed lunch picnics school bus trips out on boats all those things the boiled egg was sort of there yeah this sandwich spread is quite stiff because it's very cold down here in the bag a bunker kitchen today it looks worse than the other one and I'm not going to agree with you on that I think that looks rather good here's what we've got so far on the on my left your right on the camera is egg with salad cream so that's egg mayonnaise for people who haven't got mayonnaise on this side we have egg egg from the same chicken probably certainly from the same box mixed together with sandwich spread we're not exactly sure what sandwich spread is but we know it's excellent so those now going to sandwiches made with army white bread the facts federal butter on one side of the sandwich only because we're not extravagant what was the last time you made 10 years ago probably tuna how do you open this well still has between this and regular butter that we get these days this is spreadable butter it's not that spreadable well that's because it's cold I think as a result of it being spreadable it's also preserved so you don't have to put it in the fridge pure fat bar with rapeseed oil try it on your favorite fresh bread that's what you're doing and top with whatever you fancy eggs be inventive see where the flavors take you right well you're being inventive I mean this is a completely new experience for you I presume egg and salad cream certainly you might have had that for all right no you're correct you forgot to say as you put the marjorie no sorry the butter on plenty of it very good I'm sorry - never seen Battle of Britain [Music] this one first yep so spread that all over the well you know oh you don't need to tell you that plenty of it further caroling that looks excellent already Oh God I think you can redefine what excellent means that looks horrendous yes but it's about you know people talk these days about managing expectations if you have a mindset of a small boy in the early 1970s expectations are very different if you open your sandwiches one could be Marmite but if you looked inside you thought good god is boiled egg and sandwich spread you'd be absolutely delighted as a kid which one of these did you prefer I think margin of the egg and salad cream because I quite liked sandwich bread just by itself on a biscuit but it was a long time ago so you can test them on me let's find out as we say in TV the DP it's not as much on this one it seems well it's the same size egg there's bits left in those I forgot we're on rations in the 70s no but we still had that mentality eggs were expensive for the north the moment up we're gonna put that on the wrong sandwich and corrupt the experiment okay top half of this Amazon give it a small pat which achieves nothing that makes you feel better and then you ask me would you like diagonal or rectangular I'll have rectangular please Lucy what a shock beautiful okay which one would you like me to try first the sandwich spread on the Left sandwich spread okay here we go boiled egg regular egg from a regular chicken sandwich spread from a jar Lurpak spreadable butter and government-issue bread mm-hmm it has an undercurrent of something quite dry like I don't know what it is actually maybe it's a caper or something like that may I try the other one so this is simply chopped boiled egg with salad cream thank you that's the one I'm sorry that that is a clear winner I'm wondering if you should try them I know you don't want to but for the viewers want to know what you think as he only do you eat eggs yes do you eat salad cream but they're quite safe I've just eaten them tom has been eating them for 45 or 50 years the kitchen is clean the bread is fresh out of a packet these things are preserved there in jars the egg has just come out of the shell it's perfect you can have safer food than that any of it what what's hora which one did you have you know egg and solid Critias horrible you actually think that's horrible just tasted of mayonnaise it's not off it's vinegary because it isn't mayonnaise it's salad cream it's a different thing try there you can sour cream I'll let you into a secret it is it is worse or less good tastes the exact same no it does I rub it it tastes a little bit more like you know that sort of aftertaste of like a steak tartare it's got that sort of aftertaste of steak tartare says generations ed yes I think it does it is something like a because it gives it a sort of dry vegetable e sort of thing but I think it tastes very different from that that tastes fresh and acidic is that's a little bit like a crisp a note white wine this is a little bit more heavy I think do you you prefer sandwich spread yeah just because it doesn't taste as disgusting that is remarkable I think you are the first person I've ever met under the age of 30 who's even had sandwich spread or knows what it is but misery you didn't know what it was a couple of hours ago the other first person I know they all sort of age who's eaten it and likes it right I don't know what to say in a conclusion to that thank you very much Lucie Brown for confirming that our childhoods were as Philip Larkin said a forgotten boredom likewise right my comment subscribe get the app [Music] you said that tasted like egg mayonnaise that had gone off yeah but you try and remember that we'd never tasted mayonnaise so it couldn't taste like something we didn't know that it got my face and do what it tasted like well I'm not entirely convinced it is better I'd remember that mayonnaise is made with eggs so you having an egg and egg sandwich if you have a consolidating two ingredients that's you know I'm going to eat it just to prove to you I'm eating this off camera now you can cut if you like I'm just going to eat this sandwich because I think it's nice as egg in it - mmm but is it cut you
