[Applause] Joe presents the house of rugby together with Guinness guess who's back back again yes we're back you're not starting definite friends we're not not about guess who's back it's quite hard to believe that we've got a second series in our department alright the second series we have it was quite an intense meeting when it weird enough to make anyone smell my cheese but it was do I get second Series I managed to keep on the production company Castrol GTX on the back you've kept them in how are you good no I haven't with it I got I was heavy when I finished a because I played for ages and I then used my wife's kind of all her training knowledge and nutrition ability I got down to about 112 and then I had a bit of a durable salmon sort of sitting around my 115 a moment quite lean doing different kinds of training finding retirement exciting bizarre I've had no rugby in my life apart from when I kind of you didn't have very much last year I know I did mrs. slice pressing but you know person but I have yeah I have it's weird the only time I feel bad if I see like on Instagram England or I speak too loud and I seen like saints boys train like a little bit like melancholy like oh I'd quite like to do that yeah and then it's out my mind and I forget all about it and then were like back did it did it then and then it just a roller coaster you bought a friend today I have I'm very excited actually a friend to everybody the nice people at home so this is the legend the hero the man Tom wood wilderness would sort of house-trained caveman slash international rugby player slash unbelievable back row player teammate captain colleague unbelievable with a bow and a wood chipper real Oh what is your weapon of choice in the heat of the moment a bow range and then a cookery if you get flows only listen Bobby you possess both yeah I've got I got a cookie from my brother he went to an the pool and brought it back for me is that the Gurkhas nice yeah sorry that I've got real sharp and that that comes out I've gotta draw blood so that stays I stay sieved until it's uh it's game time so you sit back like a little straight to understand that I am like perceived on like on social media and everything else that you like oh man smell that loud like I am a pathetic example of a man in comparison to Tom would like I don't think I'm looking in it reverse were at the three stages of Matt it's not the beard that we I'm very tight yeah a little little bit Viking yeah maybe look a bit like a devil he's tapered it up my Barber's unbelievable he's tapered it cuz he makes that look alright and yours is beautifully sculpted and that's exactly none of the bones of a slain animal a sane dragon I'm gonna go and big with a bit this year things like a bead innocent then nice you know proper Viking bid and might get this real you've tightened in the sides as well yeah so might tattoo one side and then braid the back not sure we be sitting pretty much deadly serious okay this could happen I I'll give me an example just will come on some of the other things that he that he can do no we're talking about a little bit but it's like even when he came to grow a beard he grew a beard about five years ago and it wasn't just enough to like to grow a beard it was like he undertook this is a project it was like it's died it was da it was like measured it was like oiled yeah it was like it Basin three better than my tomorrow yeah it literally is like looking after antique wood yeah but it's just it's just something nobody acknowledge yes I can't do one thing we always want to do one thing and do it well he will literally go into it to the nth degree like if you went all can you change a plug he'll become an electrician right just to change the plug where's that come from and it's got to have an obsessive person I think really solo whatever it comes to whenever it comes to anything new I get really frustrated if I can't do anything so if I think if I can't do it I just think we'll some of the Herbert learn how to do that I you know you'd have to be can and I will yeah well you know who changes your plugs who does the gas it's not like Superman is it i someone just taught them how to do it so i just get online and youtubes your friend although you got to be wary that you don't go you know Ted wrong advice yeah but it's definitely a good starting point and then you know a few manuals and just have a read and then just trial and error to start pulling stuff apart so you understand it and then put about to go just like that but you don't think the example that we like in camp yeah most people have boys are resting the afternoons like to to a fall in England camp would II would just be sitting upstairs his room tying knots learning to tie knots just like not after not after not walking around with this knot and then you just hear this like any blood what is he doing and they've like just sharpening things just teaching oh my god I did that yeah yeah he's pretty much sharpening gear just sit there I brought all the kitchen knives and all my hunting knives and stuff and then just sit and shuffle I mean camp when I was bored in between and when you say all the knives how big a collection are we talking about 15 to 20 knives you know like you know like we needed garages you remember like that remember that old home improvements and they got you know the TV series home improvement with a guy camera yeah and Tim Allen Tim Allen yes you've got Tim Allen who everybody's got a gap and it's like everything's on there yeah it's like you know the best thing about being a sportsman sometimes is like you'll get a person's like someone's Fonts you so bring you up for Instagram off old message you can look we'd like to send you something right so some lights still contact wooden is like yeah honestly that the the red tree destroyed you know the red tree destroyed 17,000 that what we're just gonna give you this one and so a lorry mounted change that's all it takes 17 people to do it and it's got one of them it's like terrifying person could use yeah I mean you just exaggerate a little bit there but I've got some pretty serious chainsaws here you have got a mega chainsaw that it's bloggers than me well yeah trees by your house schools it's not like yeah we're up and running away we go we are series two of House of rugby coming up here the next day we're gonna talk about your career cool looking forward to that your relationship with husk yep good we can look ahead to England against Wales on Sunday at Twickenham you coming to that one you were gonna do one we don't know the team yet doing we know the squad for all the team I've actually put bit isn't is it even a 23 month squad or is it like so 33 miles squad to get ready okay I've actually pulled out of that one today why cuz I double booked myself attending the wedding for you won't see me at all be seeing you too much James we're gonna analyze some of any Jones decision-making as he prepares his squad for the World Cup World Cup we're gonna be out three weeks in Japan full steam ahead Tokyo will be doing some live shows details on that as we go we'll also be doing some live shows in Tokyo so if you're heading out to the World Cup come and play with us and we have much more information as we move into the autumn as well are you ready for this it kind of feels that the whole thing's gone up again like last year we've sort of muddying about and now expectation yeah I do feel there's a level of expectation I think I'm really enjoying obviously sometimes you know it's 50/50 if I come across someone in the street and they recognize me whether they're gonna say you're a bellend or whether they're going to be nice and actually I'm getting still people coming up they may actually love how you love your podcast and it's such an interesting demographic of off-put I mean what I say demographic middle class white people really but but from varying ages of it coming out and rugby to attend probably - yeah exactly coming out and saying how much sort of the show so I think series two I'm very excited to see where we go I have one reservation one concern yeah on just a bit I mean we didn't talk a lot about rugby in series one yeah bomb would have to actually start watching it now reckon a little bit I'm doing something doctor actually they've got I've got this like they've given me so I can watch the games and everything else so I'm kind of quite keen today you're going to do with that information why thought we could have some detailed conversations I mean I just check with Tom if he'd seen any of the rugby championship stuff no so we're fine you'd have to worry about do you watch any rugby when you're not doing rugby rarely I think when I first started out I saw it as kind of my responsibility to be up-to-date with everything use it as like it as a tool to grow and learn watch all the best players be current on your analysis and watching all our getting light that's gone out the window now there are many motors and how to till the bridge you know I just I just get home and get in the workshop and all under the car and just start puttering and go go actually and fishing and I've got three kids so I'm busy with that as well you know and so yeah I don't I don't I tend to just find that in order to preserve my enthusiasm for actually training and the stuff I do joy I need to down torsion will be in between do you enjoy rugby more now you've got more going on outside well yeah I do you think it's um I'm excited to get back to it rather than you know if you have a week off add a break in pre-season last week with some family time some some of my hobbies and stuff like that but then I'm actually like Ryan was into rip back into training now whereas if I'd spent all week like stretching and you know doing hands in the garden I did infuse I would just go he's interested after what what one day the flogging you just want to go back to that week off again don't like the view is like this telling the absolute truth yeah I'm really enthusiastic oh my god we've done loaded conditioning and they've run it into the ground my body felt worse than did before I finish the season let's wrap this up and go home so yeah how is it 32 yep how's this pre-season being relative to I think when you're in the middle in the thick of pre-season you're always thinking along the lines of well this is the hardest one ever done I reckon this is the most brutal preseason there but I think you think that every year and it's just the mindset of being in the thick of it do you know how to cut corners now I mean can you get away with that means if I can find little Matt League like I've got bad achilles and things like that and if I can I can say to every one of those basically said to the coaches line outs this afternoon not for me yeah and I've got the luxury as a senior player to do that a little bit now like if if a new Academy kid comes in and says I you know quite down good go they're like you know and now that's just the way way it worked but um I'm in a position now where I want to lead from the front as a senior player and someone who's been there and done it I don't want to be shirking my responsibility but you know if I need to manage something that's going on I've got that luxury a little bit and the coaches kind of give you that freedom so yeah great seasons well last year as well you were like you went from you mean you had a little bit of it like an injury concerned your pelvis thing and then you kind of got back in you absolutely killed it for a for a thing as well so it's like you're coming off a good bit of form on a second yeah I think that injury and whilst I've never taken drugs before running and I've always enjoyed it it's always been important to me and I've never been like I've always I've always really appreciated the position I'm in but I think that gave me like a renewed sense of you know about perhaps not long for the game now I reckon and hopefully a couple more years yeah I you know if I can do that on my terms have to two more really good years you do a America or Japan or Never Say Never but it's not on my mind to do something like that no no I'd like to knife through cuts gonna say good hunting shooting fishing America but not necessarily play rugby just do it Super Bass nothing come I think if I could do two more years at the top of my game still playing a good standard and playing for Saints and professionally and everything else then I'll bow out gracefully hopefully at the end of that I can just really sitting well I'm not saying that for sure because my body's in good shape and I'm feel great and someone's offering me another deal then who knows but you know yeah keep doing it as long as you can have you missed have you miss pre-season no we miss rugby I am I said I kind of little bits of it like everyone keeps asking me my friends who aren't rugby players I like how's your relationship with your wife and like all good and they're like well you're not giving anyone [ __ ] all day long you're not unloading and performing do you like that is that timing a little no I just think that obviously what would happen is is that I'm like I said Tom and I were together we'd ever like we have a conversation we chat probably you know we never joked and laughed but I wouldn't be in the full performance mode walking the change room there's five or six missed we would be you know throwing things out they will be joining in like trying to avoid Kibo lotto all these kind of stuff we would like be all over the place yeah but I don't have that anymore so I've only got I don't have anyone to abuse all I have jokes with a laugh is there's no like I'm not standing up at the front Chloe is like thank God House of rugby's back your sponge that is just gonna take the abuse yeah I mean I just started doing the different training stuff I've been that back down training at London shoot fighters do stuff so there's another team ethic and obviously they're all quite hard core fighters so I can see like people having jokes and I want to like join ago yeah your shoes are [ __ ] mate yeah yeah it's I'm trying to get that kind of balance right it is you're back in the beginners corner yes with full apprentice mode but you know I technically got a coffee group so Ben Franks and I kind of had this weird sort of situation where we bonded but we have misery misery talk Mart our mini team last year was called the Negatron you know basically if it was a transform we just turn yourself into canoe or something equally miserable and basically we teamed up better than I used to go coffees kind of really like our training and professionalism and all that kind of stuff but we couldn't be more and he's not driving around in a tank in in London East you know eating venison burgers we woody and lifting weights but we kind of had coffee clubs and then we used to every day we would eat myself Dylan Hartley Alex Waller would go down to this coffee place in Northampton yellow bourbon and just sit and have coffee smut moan about Regina yeah frothy ceremony about everything everything just chatted [ __ ] for an hour is a break and it was like a highlight and we must have done it we must have increased profits at this place because we were there every day and we'd literally be out of a session right woody coffee black yeah we get into his giant because he couldn't have a normal car it's got a union more like a Mercedes Unimog and it's like a giant thing with like winches and stuff this next military any 962 trees perhaps the shops killer milking that it's not my everyday car but it comes out yeah pretty much comes it so we like block off the street so that we would literally just park our cars and street and people were like you can't park home like north happens in st. cyr don't worry about it pretty fun yeah so so I missed that so I tried to meet up with the guys and do that we've kept them in the group we haven't kicked him off for group yeah yeah yeah that's very generous it was also you know the rest of the guys when they you've got what's at grooves all the rest of the players right things like yeah long emotional things going to see and then they take themselves like the group I just broke a [ __ ] leaving as I'm not [ __ ] leaving I'm not going anywhere I need this in my house I literally energy throw me out I'm not going with England so he's fair most people would've been kicked out their wives you still chat me up which is pens whose admin I suppose not really unless we give him like Jamie Gibson bands for missing another team social because a friend of a friend of a friend of his once Gwen's a Labour and that's why I answer I mean honestly they were like the dudes pulling stuff out of it all looks like she's telling that other point I turn turn drink some water than sliced lemon it's a on the gin and tonics you know just people out I know there's a lot of rugby through it missing team socials it's not clever it's not fun it's not big let you arrest your teammates down not acceptable it's not acceptable in any level like I know witless like obviously my team bin deuce that we talked about right even been we've been juiced when it's on the piste time they come to the front even the people who aren't involved one game there nor that one chance to show their worth you can't let us out the team social nobody listen we live in a professional mode you don't have to drink you don't it just got to be there just smile even act drunk yeah I got those steamy would it ever you know give it 20 minutes then go home it's Canton on tonight Jim do you miss him does anyone miss him or is this sort of we've we've talked about getting a key together to bring him in on a Monday morning just from around me it's just come in sickle a couple of people not need helps out of a couple of the coaches and then a little PowerPoint presentation and then leave team social secretary somewhere that's some sort of role we're gonna invent apply to team manager there was genuinely a for tells me the coaches so the players said mate you should there was a vacancy with team manager because Paul Shields is moving to I don't know just up the ranks just stop the ranks right I wanted to plans like they just never let me do it I was like I'd do two days a week I'll come in will do a bit of thing with a bit on up bits and pieces how much is in the kitty that's quite a bit we've got an official tax system there hey hopefully tax everyone goes into the pot and never see where it goes what it does our suggested booking house it's the best thing so this is genuine I'm not even joking now we got a tax system yeah I mean Academy players players pay half it's like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves yeah and it goes into Alex Ward eludes locker at I'm sick but they but you know what they race so much cash last year and won't put a figure it'll be vulgar but they honestly taxing but five figures oh yeah six figures no no no no Christ not know high five figures yeah yeah she's use all of that in it but we have this thing where they literally amass this money and we're running it with an iron fist somebody say the names will be on the board like shaming right and what happen is people like code was right at other guys they thought that this would never last yeah what ideas the first two or three weeks they just thought if I didn't pay we all give up and like it would be moments where they were like you just don't even want it to [ __ ] work you're not even pulling along with this system so because of that everybody coughed up and it was literally like there's a discount for paying up front woman yeah so if you if you just came in and went right there's my 12 months up front you get you get you know a couple of months for free but if you paid it monthly by direct debit like you had to you have to do it then if you missed a month doubled I think you had one warning they've doubled and those people like two or three months in arrears you know it's like debt collectors come right Jamie give any team I've ever been to Northampton did did the best I think I met talked about it for some of the best kind of social stuff yeah so we would have meals out bits and pieces but it was just like taken care of but there was a big discrepancy where there was what one like we both had an official kind of team social on a Monday but they went an unofficial kind of coaches thing and all family stuff on a Saturday and most the cash got mopped up but I think it was a few question marks over it like you know that old boy Deon the old Dom pérignon and so far though one for me simply says throw it out because there was a few much fun for me one per bag yeah there was a few questions he went so we got a little bit of it we had to talk good little tour around London but we didn't got a new pair of trainers and if you had a bit some decency well has got a new workshop cause he's into would buy wala if you want to follow these two own Instagram a bit it's a partnership not officially but yeah pretty much yeah I mean we obviously might see something you do like cheese boards and yeah well to be fair we don't really have a remit we just like try anything that comes along so someone I basically make something that want to experiment with I've seen a YouTube video I've seen Instagram posts alright I'll give that crack and go make a you know a three-dimensional tumbling block chopping board or something yeah and then I'll post on Instagram and then five people go can you make me one and I'll go well I probably and end up just making stuff for a post like do a lot of chainsaw a million which is basically slab furniture and stuff you make you do get a big chunk of oak and you cut the slabs off it you have like the live edge on it yeah and you put hair pins or Lakes on it and make coffee tables it n someone just message you post it and so what message is that a little business it's getting there is this what you want to do in two years time when I don't know if it's gonna you know pay the bills I don't know if it's going to be a full-time venture but maybe it's a combination because I'm qualified tree surgeon doing all my you know chainsaws and tree climbing and all that kind of stuff how does that work with your rugby insurance and I don't generally yeah it's funny basically if I cut myself out of a tree and land on my head I have to get to the rugby pitch you throw yourself over the line to go our belay taped is a guarded but what I said is the best because you'll be like woody looking a bit tired today and they'll just go show you 75 foot up a tree doing things that any like the logging with Ben Franks Thai disease anchorman just like these are allowed to use a machinery rats like Casey actually sauce his hand off with really us so he's only allowed to carry the wood so hilly sites gopher would ease up there directing Frank's is on the line so it's like a little it's a proper little industry it's getting there yeah yeah I don't really know how it's going to look post rugby I don't know you know whether that's gonna be a full-time car I like the fact that it's a hobby I like turn into a full-time career it'd be nice yeah be nice if it got that kind of momentum and get the page it gets paid to do the proper work that's a proper thing Mills the wood collects it makes the furniture made me at low the coasters made me a whole DJ set up he said he's making tables chairs cabinets and you've got some coasters yeah so you asked for the like a bed and a DJ hole DJ table for me everything custom-built shelving holes so everything honestly the best thing is there's no mrs. s obviously rug pequeños noises you know obviously love the bits and pieces but I'm always said really you know limited time you can't make fifty chopping boards so you're better off making five for for X amount of money yeah obviously also got DaVinci who does the original and then just has a workshop of people to make the copies so we trust other people to do it though I mean so it's a bit like that oh god it's my baby I don't know look you know you're gonna have to scale that if you can't perform it yeah when they buy it they don't want to turn up at the house and meet you like fibro us in that add another zero for the meter degree and suddenly your room I'll manage that so I made I made a boardroom table that was like nearly 40 is like three and a half meters by a meter and a half it was massive and it had like steel brackets because it'll I do just teaching myself welding and stuff as well so making like the metal brackets and big industrial like chunky wooden legs and that delivered it down to that door sit with Mama it's what it was random but it was yeah I think it's pretty well we see it sort of like Action Man but actually quite good at rope at the same time so Action Man Plus have you always been into it is it like something that has been an interest is your smaller was work thing is I think you know kind of the DIY side of things husband the yeah I've always been into it it's like a a progression professionally done would offers are partly responsible for this right I'd like to take credit beginners I will have another Marie buzzer buzzes back for series 2 is Tom yes please you're loading any which way but so basically nothing credibility who's better player than I am but it's so I basically when I got to we were in a camp together England and then work it out and we were staying at a hotel and I had brought my wife Alan a little too too because I was bored and I wanted to be best behavior and chat wasn't you know flying away I bought a gun to England trainer Steve Thompson are likes and property maybe yes bring us so you spring airgun you'd hear sometimes the afternoons like these like little targets boys were getting bored right but I brought my tutu in and I saw only a lamping I'm gonna shoot rabbits on the pitch in the golf course right this is a penny apart no I just a generic way to be less than 40 40 minutes out of love yeah generic father self are accessory in a fairly built-up area no not built up well it's it's not exactly Outback rule number one always know your backdrop when you're really shooting right you know downhill into a bunker with seven rabbits in this absolutely thought so no I said so I snuck out a couple of times we don't issue rifle yeah my own eye to shoot you know [ __ ] like camo no no no to the max Barbara Barbara cap whiting Gospels yeah strike here penny plus for us adds rights anyway awaits a certain time obviously I'm not a [ __ ] so I would shoot obviously appropriate you know trajectories nails but there's a load rabbit everywhere so I was you know terminating these rabbits on you know so much so that I was a combat with like six in each at like that's hard and they've told I mean I apologize people gets offended but I just I can we don't check it Tom the RSPCA it's a long time ago I mean that's what Nancy said as well just follow orders no it wasn't like that and when we said 44 show I think I think we need to razor glory but essentially yes I shot these rabbits and I was taking about I said - woody one evening so listen would you like to come out cuz you know seen an iron up the kind of other guys their rifles wherever we didn't have a cannon I'm shocked and I said took him out I gave him that the old lamp oh I slipped out like I've never seen it I could see him like working Oh how'd you get firearms out how'd you do this right next week turns out with an air gun right right it went from their guns with my guns took two shotguns two rifles to load his own ammunition to becoming like a highly trained sniper into bow hunting to making his own bows into into woodwork into tree surgery into welding into car manufacturer manufacturing into furniture manufacturing all off the back of just that one shooty screws and there's a lot of credit there's a lot of credit to take for me wandering around the blue touch paper it weren't saying I'm not saying it was just a little catalyst which created the monster of the world is manly now could do in each of the butterflies game yeah and it was not a progression what you doing with six rabbits a night in your you know hotel well Stu Stu yeah I would I would take them home in between sessions get and give them the stuff for my dog and take the breasts out and them and eat them obviously not grab Paris we give you a rabbit risk giving to a flapper minute no way but when did you eat with a rabbit on that and the Alexander yes it wherever I was eating of it wizardmon a blender with the first and and the problem is I was also leaving about the back for foxes because in the ultimate goal was in to shoot the Foxes right but essentially I just gave a buffet to a fox so I mean there was about 17 of them in there with the Foxes the same size as a minibus but it's not my finish because it was so we never kind of got that far and then obviously I kind of dawned on me that probably wasn't a good idea anymore and we just all left it left it where it was you are watching this is a house of rugby it is when I truly back for series to watch it by Joe together lovely forensic Guinness I suppose the one credit we have done is that were 15 minutes in and we're into Guinness just tries to take I thought I did eat that on the back of a rabbit so you do take the Phillips out Thank You Marie I just cut it's just not the same as like a pigeon or no no no no be the tiny aren't they but you did see what you still cook a little bit of protein it's not given to dog eat himself maybe what are you learning it you're learning it Oh between the harp and the Guinness is someone through the Vickery and I don't know whether you belt I don't I didn't ever even member that was you doing that the first time even leading the to up all remember was Phil Vic who was getting filled in by someone and I was standing the next the referee with the referee win ref and then I've steamed in and it Vic yeah yeah yeah and then you've followed on me on him and they bound me for flight leading with a flying headbutt into Rock and they went in in the the bit on the sighting Bay 20 Vic's was cheating right one is the stone of all right in his loan yeah and can't member who it was from a Worcester player was in their tussle in I don't know if a punch was thrown his back in the days where you probably could get away with a bit of a punch and so then I've reacted and I've gone flying in and then I think husk was like a second or third defender and he's gone piling in as well and then it was all we didn't you get in battling that that's my first like it was nobody changes any point or take I think we've already established like you you'd think that we're like polar opposites in a lot of ways like his social media his privado and all the kind of chat you'd think like I honestly thought there's no one and a warm to this guy's like I honestly running when we first got into England camp and I knew he'd like likes of him being the squad I was like I'm basically on my guard if he flinches I'm going to write I've literally walked him with that attitude I I was ready to fight him if you see this [ __ ] look at me wrong by just fight a bellarius I think it ever so slightly scared just in case we don't know it might be a bit extreme but that's like kind of my mindset I'm like like he's he's all just chat and non - so he's gonna say something and it's gonna piss me off and I'm just gonna have to whack him shoot him up early and that that was kind of my approach for them I got there and like he couldn't be more supportive in terms of like playing on the flank together made I'd date my debut alongside in away in Wales which is pretty hostile yeah you know pretty big theater to go into whew England debut on the opening night of Six Nations and stuff like that so you know she was just an awesome kind of tag-team on the back row that I've got really appreciated and and now I just find the malarious like it's I was so excited when he came to no fun tonight we're gonna have so much fun just because he just brings so much energy to the team I love just sitting back I don't even get involved most the time I just sit back and just watch him going at it with another player or a coach or whatever just absolute comedy and then obviously we've got some things in common with like the better shoot in and other things off the pitch as well very miserable coffees being miserable never had actually come to respect yeah like the side of it that I didn't think I liked or would respect is like there's social media stuff it's a lot of work like and now our now I kind of really respect how much it takes to be that kind of belligerent with it and just go go go yeah I'm like I can't wait because because we talked about like my Instagram profile and office that's effort to me to like because I love doing the work I love doing the wood work but to stop and take pictures or videos or capture content and talk about it unlike that's just distract him from the stuff I'm doing I want to do the stuff ya don't want to do the media and it's hard work and it's effort and just like even right in a caption for an Instagram post it drains me I'm right I can't be asked with it and trying to think of hashtags and come up like make things current where it's like obviously he's got that down to an absolute t and it's just a natural with it and but also I've like in England camp it go back to his room and you you think it was all like he was like that 24/7 yeah and like the way he is when he's on performing mode in the steam room but then he goes back to his room and he's like proper head down laptop like making making businesses and stuff happen like and social media content and and I'm like I can't keep up with that I don't have that so so into respect in everything you don't have any of those in a 31 shows when people really nice about that I know how to do with it but I said you know Tom's in it like initial reaction I've had that all the time especially when the England Campbell you see the different color first time I met Jerry mall or he had he had like red dyed hair and Johnny hog tattooed inside his head first time I met Ellis kenge you know Jordan crane always kind of I could see them all my body leg was like all I've heard about him I've seen him do this I know he's like that or played against him he's gonna be a [ __ ] and I just think if it's a goodly about rugby's he attracts not good people and if your heart like tom is unbelievably hard-working really a great great player yeah lovely guy and we we got online oh the first training session I'm always very honest as well like I think if I think if you do stuff good you should be told the good play like I'm not wanting people like you don't you wouldn't complement you know I'm ever he's one of his first training sessions in the middle of a middle of Iraq he did his kind of trademark pick the ball up [ __ ] he just ran straight to the middle of the rock high needs gas I want to score in the corner I was like [ __ ] out who's who's that like you know it was it's a big deal in the middle first kind of training session to do that and no people had said Tom and Croft you'll quite similar yeah and I was actually like no they're completely like he you know Crawford he was kind of obviously unbelievable player and and and stuff but what it was like hard-nosed like you know because you're quite tall he wasn't tall and wasn't always there wasn't a massive universe he's a big guy but just had that real physical edge and wouldn't never shy away from her so play in the back row it was really nice we kind of had a really nice balance together and we actually got two we lost that Six Nations game but we kind of as a bat row partnership you know we kind of bonded through that through that you know you get into heaven you go you know went all the way it was a couple of injuries like I got in that's all I was five I was fortunate they never season that yet well I was really fortunate because that their their um their injuries that left the door open for me like some Lewis Moody and Tom Croft were recovering from injuries that year and so I got the core up I remember going to the Portugal camp in Brown and being like oh this is a great opportunity I'm gonna be around some like some big names here yeah great chance to just you know show might like to my and Johnson know what I'm about and make a good impression but I didn't think for a second I was going to be in the team yeah really I thought I'd be fighting perhaps for a 23rd man or a bench spot I'd love to get some involvement maybe Italy game I'll get a run out or something Johnny walks up to me on the first day and says starting on this is the this is your first involvement with England pretty much and I think I'd been in a camp I've been in the autumn series in and out the camp doing a bit of training but you were still pretty wide-eyed detail yeah yeah a bit I've been in the when enjoying the autumn series I haven't played a minute rugby but I've been in and out the camp a couple of times just yeah and then I turned up for that about Six Nations camp in Browns where they do the first warm weather training in the rain yeah and you like first gym session just pulls me a sigh and shakes man and just says mate you start and just get your head round it you got two weeks to get comfortable with that and obviously Hass was on the back row and having the likes to him and Nick Easter and that alongside you with the experience - yeah almost betting that lots of other things I want to ask you about but very quickly we as a real Seamus yeah we're gonna trail the Cole Frampton yeah I would pick up obviously Tommen on your career in just a moment - but you're obviously watching how people you by Joe to get very good friends a Guinness back for series - who to believe that tax payments I'd chance Haskell and Tom would still can't we are going to talk about Tom's England career we go to already in Wales clash on Sunday but first of all as you just mentioned the tea Cowboys headed out to Philadelphia this week we thought they thought we all hoped that they'd be building up to Carl Francis fight this weekend but extraordinarily poor Carl suffered a freak accident yesterday to his hand which means the fight has had to be cooled off as you can imagine he is absolutely devastated have a listen to this I just feel like a winner I've been away from my kids and summer holidays they've been off school I've been away it's a sweet-looking obviously we estimate an absolute list and money down the drain probably got to 30k in a training camp but out here in Philly both three in a bit weeks now I'm nothing nothing to show for the plan was to have this fate I'm fake for a world hater yeah so the plan is now still the faithful world heyo this fate does not happen it doesn't happen for whatever reason I'm not getting any younger I don't want to be sitting around waiting here I just want I want I want a lot of the important big baits I wanna go if I can get big a big hero Carlos the I mean from all of us we hope you recover incredibly quickly I know just a paraphrase sitting in a hotel lobby having a coffee someone looks over a whooping great ornament falls on the poor man's hand it's broken two bars bones in his hand just a couple of hours after completing the final training session of a 10-week training camp the big comeback I was just athle extraordinaire I mean rugby players no strangers to entry but it does sound like a similar excuse I was calm he dropped aftershave on this photo who was a foot why there's Louis Moody who the doctor at a time you said he was in the humor an injection of an aesthetically sir would something his ankle he gave him the wrong thing he switches whole angle off gonna use that was the timing the doctor Alice of Paris even they gave me sleeping pills and I was like I don't think all right sorry does that put your eyes back in around the wrong way unbelievably unlucky it's almost like it was one of the most biggest made-up stories I've ever heard in my life but next time I'm gonna call Karl up for some sort of a said no it's true but I believe you what's the weirdest injury you've had weirdest it's gone it's not a chainsaw out numerous engine you have had a change not chainsaw and not changed or bad accidents in the workshop and stuff yeah what was the time of the thing went into your hand slightly flicked off or like yeah so I've ripped the fingerprint off my index finger here I was using like a chop saw just a woodworking chop saw and the piece of wood had a really funny and it's incredibly hard like dense wood so it's it's got a really sharp edge on it it's like a knife basically yeah and the chops off I made a mistake I should have had it rested against the fence in a certain orientation and had got that orientation wrong which allowed the saw to grab it and flip it so the sword grabbed it flipped over and jammed my finger against the fence of the saw so the saw blade doesn't touch me or anything it's just the wood itself was clipped and it's gripping my fingerprint and just ripped it against the fence and torn it off and it's that moat I've had some horrible injuries to rugby but that is the most painful thing of everything I think it's because of all of nerve endings and stuff in the India finger it just ripped the flesh like clean off my pad of a finger and I heard just like makeshift the height dress di just like I've seen a cork wrap just grabbed it squeezed it wrapped as much tape and just bandaged and not round it as I could according to the club the next thing on that you know often they're not to do about this one though tell them to if you went into the club bound up did a rocking wrong session when I pulled my finger off in the mall and they've kind of treated it he's in the gun I look like what would happen in a more woody I've had to fess up from basically saying much wrong you try you know no blagging that but I've phoned the doc and just gonna you know [ __ ] Phil I need I need some help I don't mean ah to do about it but I dress and you know the next day when like you've dressed it like makeshift we've just got peel this stuff out like this open like there's just no fingerprint there whatsoever and yeah I did have to play with it so like I had to train and play with it the next day because you can't he's like sure I trained it was I think was just like captain's ruined the next day and then in the game on Saturday and I've just like injected in the webinar finger - I'll make it numb and put like a weird splint thing over it just yeah just play it and it was just horrible but when you when you vote yourself away from the khalaby it's not like you if you hurt yourself on the pitch you can always say you know you you've gotta look after me now but when you hurt yourself away from the club you just violence punch each other face unless the warm up so that was the one time he let himself down he knew after this is our sergeant's like you never if anyone's balls off me never gonna break into his times honestly I think if any of the team had have been like trolled the way we were like it would have been ten times worse like we I don't want to just act like we're we were victims of something we were in Queenstown and boys were having a good time but I've heard like crazy stories about other teams like that were way worse and obviously when you're not successful if we're going to win the World Cup then no one will cared what they we could have all just stuck a fingers up left and yeah that's how we get that's how we do business but because because we were perhaps not as successful as we hope to be you know it's an easy it's an easy out for everybody then what were your best days in an England Jessie what will you reminisce on in 25 years time who's even going I love my debut Nations I think Toby Flood got mono match that was one where we were questioned Dillon yes he said yeah volatile yet any build-up and he played much Ryan good memory but yeah obviously that was just an incredible I've never played him that much feeling like that before that was just with the roof on and the high wall Stadium and just it fallen you know jiving the bus down and people are hurling abuse and light smacking me first what is it like as someone wicked that must be such a leap from anything else you'd experienced yeah did you mean step into anything ah I belong here or was there a bit of what percent I absolutely loved it here I I suppose like some people get no I've never I struggled with nerves in like an under 18s trial game once and I don't know what it was but I got like kind of sleepless about it but then since then I've never never really struggled with nerves in games and and that game I just I did feel ready because I guess the way the team kind of took me in the way I like trained and prepared I just felt ready to play and I just I think I actually played better in that game then I'd been playing recently for my club I just enjoyed it as yeah I remember being in as was singing the anthem sore some people are teary some people have worked up an emotional I remember actually having a look around the crowd and like taking a proper look at the stand and being like how amazing is this like to be here and trying to find my mum and dad in the crowd and still fly it not knowing where they might be Sat and obviously it's pretty impossible in a stadium like that I remember being conscious of those things and just being like you normally look up and that thing that you get from looking for your family then you sort get to all the the wealth partners the female birds don't really move anywhere else about there and turn to Maximus was he single days not now now now I'm are actually blinkers late laser in Khloe's eyes we know we look up we got news even 2012 yeah you were a man possessed that day early charge town would you remember from I just I remember in the build-up everybody talking about New Zealand as if they're invincible and I just remember really getting my back up and just being like maybe it was the familiarity from spending some time out there I don't know but I just had this kind of was showing him way too much respect obviously a quality team we don't have to talk about how good they are you know the respect is it goes without saying but at the same time like you know it's 15 blokes I'm on a pitch and I just I didn't get how we voluntarily spoke taught them up and in such a way that we were handicapping ourselves before we started yeah and for some reason like I just you know there's a couple of Raleigh and crows kind of in the in the media and there was kind of an inner belief I never I thought we'd win that game I genuine were into that game thinking would win it and and you know maybe a few of us did and it rubbed off enough though it was one of those occasions where we got the job done the best bit about it was how we went out we shot ahead to like 15 nil or whatever it was they came right back into it 17 nil and then they kicked off 73 they can't even forty they came right back into it and it was like oh good try England like you know I've watched so many games of New Zealand where a team comes flying out the blocks really puts it on them and you're like oh they might do it here but then the inevitable happens in New Zealand get a foothold and then they blow you away for 20 minutes ends up being like 40 points to 15 and you're like well I yeah good try here mmm but it like to come back again and win it and I was lucky enough to be named man of the match but there's some unbelievable performances on the day I'm a Brad Barrett was absolutely awesome man who was on fire you know like Sebastian and like Ben young at all those guys with Tom Young's yeah they're tough as nails on that day and Rob Shore and yeah it's just um it was a team performance when just came together on the day and so it felt like we won it twice with that comeback and then you know to stay the ship and go again yeah it was I've got the absolute respect for like some Richie McCaw and you know they were heroes a mine growing up like watching Richard macaw remember watching him playing like Canterbury Crusaders and stuff as a kid I watched more of like the Super Rugby stuff then I perhaps did of English Premiership stuff there wasn't really a facility to watch it yeah but the super super rugby was on telly when I was a kid now to get up early on Saturday morning and watch those games and I did Richard McCall was like an idol of mine and Kieran read in that playing but to see the look in their eyes and that so when they realized that they weren't gonna win yeah or that they were like earned a massive pressure and it was going against them I just remember being on a flight with a biggest smile on my face thinking I've got we've got we've gone and you know they've they're beating us numerous time since so it's not like it was just our day it was just one of those days where it come together talking of saying it as you see it the Dave Ward yeah I I can I can believe that like I've got nothing against Dave I've got no grudge or anything Dave's a great player like I've played against him numerous time he's obviously got his skill set just elaborate on the story for those who I start the start because most people probably won't know but we had a little run-in in in New Zealand so there's a little bit of history there on tour in New Zealand 2014 and I I don't want to go into the whole detail of that because it was literally last night of one well the last week story of our season so we were playing the third Test and by this stage you knew who was in the team and who wasn't and we're out for dinner midweek and the non 23 it was the end of their season so they were gonna go and have a beer they were going to go to dinner and then they were going to carry on and they were already charging fairly hard but the 23p I was leading the binge at the 23 players that were going to take the field had one massive test against the All Blacks to play and we've come really close to beating um day one yeah weird not doing a bad job our in forsyth bad aren't we - and and we'd lost a series but there was though some pride at state so it's still a massive game like a you know we're not we're not winding down and the 23 were I was still prepping for that all that albeit we'd been out for a nice meal midweek the likes Dave Ward we were finished for the season and they were getting a bit mouthy and they were saying a bit a bit too much for my liking and they were starting to abuse the 23 for leaving and heading home to get a good night's sleep so it can ready for the game he said hey chohee piped up to a couple of players on that way out and I'm talking like 50 covers like Ben Youngs and people like Jeff Paul and senior players within the team and he was just running his mouth a little bit too much and I called him out and basically said look if you're initially get off and get outside we'll sort it and I've never seen anyone fold and melt so quickly like y'all attested yeah yeah he wasn't he was like under the table he wouldn't lift his head wouldn't look at me and it was one of those things that you don't you know I said straight talker we had a conversation some of the strange [ __ ] around right and they've gone I don't like we said come outside all right so my boy forget if someone offers you out even if you know you feel like you go that is the etiquette of these I just think you've even got apology I just gotta go I'm really I'm really sorry I stepped about I didn't mean it and it'll go right okay just out of interest if if you say outside and I come oh it is then on yeah no I went outside we didn't thinking I was actually like it was like I took my jacket off as I do it we doing this where was it this is a rugby context or okay you took a few such a player we're on no this player was writing a lot of checks he couldn't cash listen to a lot of people shop a lot and get really steaming oh I'm too and they get steamed and they say stupid things right we've all but I make drinks fire drinks and turns into a nightmare I'm not anything on particular top but I wouldn't go around sitting at dinner with you guys going I'm not your outwardly I'm not you out right we're red blood emails because eventually is gonna go either a walk off is you know you dead and then that was it you know but then it was all because I walk back because I felt stink I felt terrible after that I don't I'm not really like that kind of person I don't think I'm tough by the way I talk beaten up by Grandma that's fine but it was just one a situation so he called what school out and honestly it was like this car keys maybe looking at the table and then and then carry on but it was it was one of those things where like if I had done that and he called about I was I'm not gonna fight what sorry woody yet I'm out so it was a slow burn you know said that that happened and we aren't really interacted since then like and like I say I think he's a great player and I've got nothing against him in general but there was a terrible article written which I had kicked off about post World Cup where May after the World Cup I was interviewed and I was in full Romanian case I was like in the Romanian number Ten's kit it didn't fit like it was just like with [ __ ] this up we've lost we haven't achieved what we wanted to achieve like our moments gone it were massively underperformed and we're all gooded we were just having a beer and doing the right thing we'd played that that you're it's re not euro you're you're going in and we're doing the right thing we were swapping shirts we were trying to make the best of it a campaign was over it's like let's just have a beer very face on it face the media do what we've got to do get out and this is just a bad situation that we can't make worse by I've gone to do media I'll front it up because it was a tough time and i've been asked loads questions about the england captaincy and a flat-bottomed as best I could and I was basically probed and prog probes and I said look ultimately if somebody asks me will you captain England I will probably say yes because I'd be mad not to now that's not without reservation I'd have lots of concerns there's lots to think about but ultimately I think I'm the kind of person that would like with frontal we've directly asked will you captain England but I've not been asked I'm not bitter about that I think Chris has done a great job um I'm he's willing lieutenant every opportunity I get so no issue but the headline comes out you know would throws his hat in the ring for England captaincy one thing and I was fuming with it a basically phone Chris straight away message him may is a horrible headline if you read the quotes you'll see the crooks of what was said late we've just got a batten down the hatches a little bit I'm really sorry it's it asked a horrible thing to read but no I'm not knife in your back Dave Ward however reads the headline doesn't read the article but comes out on Twitter and publicly basically saying if we're friends like that who needs enemies kind of thing knife and me we're not alike for me but basically calling me out I was like may is your phone on I'll give you a bell if you want to talk about it let's talk about it don't know what you're doing on here he kept going I was like funny haven't seen you since since you were under that table and New Zealand kind of thing and he went back and forward then he posted a clip of him stealing the ball off me in the Saints game and I was just like may I assume your accounts been hacked at this stage like would like if I if you know I was honestly really close to getting in the car and driving down to Guildford or whatever and just having him in front of all of his mates and how I was fuming I'm like I don't like social media interactions because they're incomplete and they're not nuanced and they're really difficult but to just have that from somebody that had folded so readily face-to-face to then like the ultimate Twitter troll and he got me he caught me bad and I am sorry for the article because that was not a reflection of what was said and I probably could have been a bit more savvy and not given anything yeah and but that's what sportsmen do these days because you can't you don't expose yourself so you just go flat back in a hallway there's a poor place for like and it's really boring and I've always been somebody that will ultimately stand by what I say I speak openly and try to talk to the press and occasionally they go or we can flip this into an awesome headline and make it really controversial and I've been I've been caught out with that a couple of times and maybe maybe I'm hard done Boyle maybe I shouldn't have said what I said because I should have been more savvy or maybe someone should read the actual article and what was the headline and then we're all good no it doesn't but I I just hated the I'd like throughout my time with England I can't think of a thing worse than being accused of my knife in your captor like it's like yeah like Chris Robshaw was what imagine Brian just taking it exactly the way in which I really hope so I think so um but you know like I'm saying with me and husk and our relationship at six and seven I mean myself and Chris played a lot of games together at six and seven and I've got what most respect for him as a player and a captain and to have somebody call me out over social media but then you know not be able to smooth things over have a proper conversation about it will clear the air and basically clear my name because my I didn't want that but also Robbo is a very level-headed guy and Chris isn't the problem it's the perception that everyone's got with me somehow because perception is 9/10 and if people think that um try loggerheads go on it I remember it now
