I had done a few films I had done El Dorado I had done the glory the guys I had done before the Godfather I think the Godfather was like my fifth or sixth film I had done a few films John Wayne yeah John Wayne he he was he was a piece of work he was I enjoy it took a little while you know because he'd he tried to get you intimidated and and we we became pretty close only because he knew I was like a fast start man and that's what he liked didn't matter and and he he would really try to intimidate you you know like sort of first week was me and him and and I come out of this you know the neighborhood play outs to studio and I'm looking at this guy act now why'd you do it look why'd you have to go and do it and I'm looking at him on I can't I can't believe that I'm listening to this so I just started every time he talked the only reality was I was smiling it the way you know I mean someone Mitchum came he he looked at some of the dailies he goes you're doing a lot of smiling at Jiminy Cricket because I want his hat he called me Jiminy Cricket I go he want me to do you know but I had a really good time with those guys I mean of course I had a whale lifts this big between those two guys you know and Howard Hawks you know and I was yeah he was nobody told Howard what to do you know he'd go and write an eighth of a page of the Davis trail and we just ride horses and wait for him to come out you know my room I wasn't gonna say nothing and the Duke said now look he kid he said when when he yells action I want you to turn around and give me that look you give me I have no idea what he's talking about so Hawks of course comes walker for he had the whole we had the whole town full of late for ups was a huge shot the three of us come running around this corner at night and there were four ups and two opposite stagecoaches and 200x to the whole town and the whole idea was that three of us come around and we're gonna attack this bar two bad guys are in this bar down the end so Duke comes right now look I miss be you go down around there now this and that and I say something and I go that was what Hawkes wanted me to do any come on Jimmy he says when you say that line just go all right all right coach you know he just walked back the thing as he's walking back dude turn some he says now I look at it when you say that care line says I want you to take a step and turn around and give me that look you give me all right action everybody's going that's stage good I take a step I stop I turn around the point is that Wayne told me every time he says take a step turn around so I do it and then Hawkes would yell cut and come walking thing they'd reset everything which took a half hour and he go look kid he says when you say the lines just go all right coach sorry all right now he walks he goes as he's walking back to the county clothes now I look at kid he says don't take a whole step just take a half a step and then turn around and give me that look you get me I'm still have no idea what the friggin look is I think it was smiling I'm just laughing at action everything starts up again I take a half a step turn around what's the matter with you can't you just say the line and go coach I'm really sorry I you know I I don't know what happened I had a brain fart something you know he starts walking back and he goes now look at kid and I turned around and Mitchum ran I was gonna hit him and from that day we were like you know good feet just he knew what he was doing you know he just was having a good time in my expense but it turned out I'd be off-camera right I'd be off-camera after a while and but he now as a week went by you know like I'd be off-camera and hawks would be next to me and and doop would be you know sitting there in the camera and right in the middle machine I'd go right and he'd laugh and now what's the matter there's nothing Pappy sorry you know and you know it just became just see who could screw up who you know like one day they had remember those wooden dressing rooms they have I come to lunch in my possession was locked I go guys well how come at slide kinking in it well here's the key garbage just came out he just piled it with garbage it was like a twelve-year-old kid you know but this is more about wrinkles so in some ways a twelve-year-old kid himself
