as it is written in Isaiah the front I am sending my messenger ahead of you welcome to branch together the channel that helps you kick start your day with the life changing habit of daily Bible reading I love God's Word I love it because he speaks to us he really does as we're faithful in reading his word he talks to us that is so awesome well let's see that today we're gonna jump into chapter 5 and there may be things he speaks to us today we may not always feel like we get a radical new revelation from the Lord every day but when we're faithful in this habit more faithful to do it each day there will be days when we are very confident that we hear from him so let's do that together today is chapter 5 the first thing we're gonna do is just open in prayer God we're closing out this book of James today I pray that you help us to recall what you have taught us through this book there's a lot of a lot of practical wisdom and good things in here for us Lord for Christian living in maturity I pray that you convict us God where we need to be convicted that you shape our hearts into people that love you that just want to be with you and want to read your word make us into the people that you want us to be alright be with us now Lord amen come now you rich people weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you your wealth has rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten your gold and silver are corroded and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire you have stored up treasure in the last days look the pay that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cries out and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts you have lived luxurious luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves you have fattened your hearts and in the day of slaughter you have condemned you have murdered the righteous who does not resist you therefore brothers and sisters be patient unto the Lord's coming see how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient until it receives the earth the early and the late rains you also must be patient strengthen your hearts because the Lord's coming is near brothers and sisters do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged look the judge stands at the door brothers and sisters take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of suffering impatience see we count as blessed those who have endured you have heard of job's endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about the Lord is compassionate and merciful above all my brothers and sisters do not swear either by heaven or by earth or with one or with any other oath but let your yes mean yes and your no mean no so that you won't fall under judgment is anyone among you suffering he should pray is anyone cheerful he should sing praises is anyone among you sick he should call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him up if he has committed sins he will be forgiven therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you will that you may be healed the prayer of a righteous person is powerful in its effect Elijah was a human being as we are and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land then he prayed again and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit my brothers and sisters if any among you strays from the truth and someone turns him back let the person know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins all right the first thing happening in this chapter is that there's concern for people who put money over God these you know if you have a little bit of money you still have the temptation of putting money over God it's easier to make money and idle but if you have a lot of financial wealth then it's even easier and it's even harder to deal with this struggle easier to put that money as an idol and worship it and subsequently not worship God this is something that we should be cognizant of and I think James is bringing that up for us in the beginning of this chapter and the second thing is he he continues to exhort us about endurance do you know the stories of the prophets that he's talking about in that section when he mentions the prophets like like Jeremiah for instance Jeremiah was faithful in bringing God's Word his message to the people that God called him to but no one ever listened to him Jeremiah was like today he would be the most the biggest failure of a pastor in the eyes of the world because he'd have nobody in his church he'd be preaching to an empty audience every and we would think he'd be a failure but actually he was faithful and doing what God called him to do was a tough job speaking of jobs if you pronounce that a little bit differently we have Jobe who's actually mentioned in this chapter he's another person we know from the Old Testament and job story was that he was a righteous man that basically had everything taken away from him he was extremely righteous like you know the cream of the crop as far as God's servants and followers in his in his region in his land whatever and everything was taken from him he was stripped of everything he had but you know what even then even with the people around him saying curse God and go die you know obviously he doesn't care about you job even with those voices and I said he was faithful then he endured through that time and the story we see at the end is that God restored everything to him gave him back everything that he he everything he had plus more is because that is the picture that we get from the story and that's because of his endurance so James is concerned that that we as believers both his original audience and us today are that we endure through the hardships we go through and that we're faithful then we come to this section about the prayer of faith well when when my first wife was sick she had brain cancer and there was a pastor he was you know part of a healing crew he came to to visit us nice guy and he he genuinely I think he cared for us and he he wanted to make sure that we we had enough confidence that God would do what we were asking him to do that we had enough confidence that there was no doubt in us that we believed God would heal her It was as if we could make God do something as long as we could wipe ourselves off enough to do it well I'm working on a separate video to cover this topic because it's it's close to my heart and I think it's something that we all need to understand what the Bible's teachings are really unhealing in the physical realm and what that has to do with faith how faith intersects with healing it's probably like a five part series or something like that so I don't have time to do it right now but I do want to say this if someone tells you that you aren't healed because you don't have enough faith and they open this and say look the prayer of faith will heal the sick they'll say it will it's not it might I've been there those those arguments have been presented to me and as you really study it and you look in they don't hold up for a few reasons there's there's a lot of complexity here and like I said we're gonna we're gonna cover this somewhere else but I do want to say that God is a healer he really is I've seen him heal and it's amazing he wants to move in that way in this earth he doesn't always choose to though so I think our posture as Christians is that we should ask God for healing we should ask God for miracles and we should we should trust him not trust that he's going to do what we're asking we should trust him that's what faith is faith isn't knowing that God is going to do this certain thing faith is knowing he can knowing who he is what he's capable that's faith trusting in God and trusting in his heart not trusting in the outcome I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna I gotta cut this off because I'm gonna talk all day about that but we'll cover that more later but for right now we're going to we're gonna close this book in prayer alright this book of James God thank you for being with us as we have read through these these five chapters in this book of James I pray Lord that you help us to consider it pure joy when we face trials of many kinds because we know that that is how you make us mature and complete God please give us a perspective on the craziness of this world and the struggles we go through give us a perspective that that we need to endure and that is our job of being faithful and we know and we know that you have a hand in shaping us and maturing us through those things god I don't believe that you want all of the pain that call is caused by sin in this world I don't think you want it or you caused it but I I believe you do use it and you use it to help us and shape us in the long run help us to keep that perspective Lord be with us today as we go our separate ways wherever that is amen all right continue memorizing with us it's going to scroll on the screen right now pause it if you need to read it a bunch of times but it's a good one we're gonna have it for the month [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] you [Music]
