Tldw: offense was incredibly vanilla, but well executed by Hurts. Saints just wouldn't spy him at all the first half or showed any respect for Hurt's legs.

He hasn't yet analyzed the second half, at least hasn't uploaded the video yet.

Of course the training wheels were on. He’s a rookie with no preseason thrown in his first start against one of the best teams. Imo he performed better in his debut than tua did his. I’m very intrigued by the next few weeks. We shall see

Great breakdown. Concerning how often he says it looks like preseason offense. Love the breakdown of the first failed 4th down. That truly was just a horrific design/call. We need an offensive staff overhaul.

As I suspected the Saints had a horrible gameplan. Pretty shocking. That said Hurts made the plays that were there. The only miss I see is a wide open Sanders for a long TD, but he still completed to Goedert on the play.

I really think they pared down the offense for his first start, at least I hope they did. Ideally this weekend we're seeing more nuanced concepts.

How is this dudes strength not more of a talking point? They’re like β€œwow he picked up the first on 4th and 2” yeah he squats almost 600 pounds dog. You think it’s luck that he can run through a free tackler for a first?

hi everybody welcome to the qb school i'm jt o'sullivan you asked for it you got it jalen hurts part one this thing's gonna be massive fired up for it let's get it started welcome to the qb school so this is one of those videos that you asked for from a man daniel i hope you break down jalen hurts daniel you asked for it a bunch of people asked for it actually this was just the first one that i spotted uh i'm fired up for this one i wanted to watch this game go back through the all 22 this thing will eventually be massive this is pretty close to what a qb school patreon video eventually ends up being this is just part one this video part two will be tomorrow coming out soon but this thing was fun to watch on a number of different levels i wanted to see how jalen hurts played how the saints tried or didn't try to defend him what kind of schemes they were running this thing is in-depth long settle in enjoy i know i was excited to go watch the film hopefully you will enjoy this let me know what you think in the comments again let's get this thing going jalen hurts first start first dub here we go all right jalen hurts first half first start first third down a little mesh get him something comfortable i thought the eagles did a really nice job of calling things that you can see on his former life in oklahoma with a bunch of mesh some screens even he was comfortable with right here it's not there probably the best thing he did early in this game if not the entire game use his legs use his athletic ability use that four five to just outrun people and there were elements of this that just felt a little preseasony for me this is just pure mesh we're gonna get a middle field middle hook player who actually doesn't get very deep here we're gonna go a little mesh we're gonna go a little mesh a little high five pre-covered style i'm gonna get a little rail route it's not there maybe he could have come here and hit this regardless i like him using his feet here to be able to get a first down if it's blurry don't risk it athletic dynamic athlete really looked fast in this game too made a bunch of great plays with his legs again decisive from within the pocket here we go first third down let's get it not there go one two run and really the saints had no answer and when i say it felt a little preseason that's why i feel like you know normally really quickly this league is going to adjust to his speed right here a little q power on a fourth and two early in the game doug's gonna be aggressive they can barely get lined up you know the other thing about this is i'm just not sure how sustainable this plan really is when you watch the whole game you know they really run him and i don't mean just run him like zone read they're running q power on fourth and two within the tackles something that you know you just don't see a whole lot of long-term quarterbacks do and what i mean by that is you just this is a tough beating to take so what do we got here we're going out down gap down gap down gap hinge we're wrapping normally you would wrap for the first inside linebacker right here we get this little swap technique so he's coming across wrapping right there and we got a free hitter right here so fourth and two and it's basically a tackling drill between these two right here be able to see it there it is down down wrap 43 unblocked in the hole boom i mean he gets it here and i totally understand why you would want to do it nice block from the left tackle get out of here boom but at the same time you know there are not many quarterbacks who are doing that type of run not on the goal line little three by one nub again this is just triple option this is zone reed with a bubble i mean he's been doing this for years and you know you just don't quite know how fast he is to get out there not 494's got no shot in space it's actually even better from the wide because you can see how they have to kind of play the pitch quote-unquote but this is just spread option so we're going to come down here we're running zone read up top right here we're reading this defender right here here's the pitch man so someone's got to go with him he's got to go with the pitch man he's got manned up manned up so really it's here and then you got to come up here rally make a tackle from you know 10 plus yards deep not easy to do this is what you know teams are going to get answers to this really quickly but again he's i mean he's fast he's running away from people do a nice job hanging on the pitch but again what's the down distance there it's third and 11. he gets it to fourth and two that's all jalen hurts you don't there are no other teams in the league running third and 11 triple i mean there just aren't it's not sustainable but it works here sort of works here when we get to fourth and two this is a terrible call and i don't say that lightly we're trading so first of all we'll talk about it when we watch it again we're trading just running an inside zone with someone unblocked in the c gap i mean it's just not you got to have answers you got to give your quarterback an opportunity here there's no this is a nice play from 27 but we got to be better scheme-wise especially on this time to down a distance you got to you got to be more sound the first thing here is the trade watch the trade come across he moves him up on the right see him move up the wide receiver on the right here get up but when he goes across he doesn't move him off so what does that mean that means that tight end is covered up he can't go out on a route he doesn't have to respect it so jenkins says i'm gonna come right back in down the line of scrimmage and there it is if he stays off there's a much better chance that this play hits but it's impossible with this late addition and i really think it's because of the formation malfunction so you got to really give your quarterback an opportunity here if they get seven in the box they get seven in the box here and this is how we're going to block this thing here double team double team here if he's off here fourth and two all right maybe that's like the last q power but once he realizes he's ineligible he does a great adjustment coming up late into swap or exchange whatever you want to call that technique and he's unblocked there they don't re declare this thing once he comes up here you almost have to redeclare it to make him the mic and now we need to go here here here here front side and leave this guy backside or leave the defensive end back side but again not having any sort of rpo not having any sort of bailout you know at this point you really need to call it timeout fourth and two fourth and two for this to happen i just you don't see this mistake a lot this looks like early 2000s football so scheme got him there next one first and ten big opportunity for a throw down here to the bottom of the screen to a little corner post all the way across the field he just didn't get a chance to see jalen hurts throw the ball down the field very much but this was an opportunity for a massive play just barely miss you know i think that there's always been questions about his accuracy until he proves otherwise but this is a nice well-designed play i love his vision to see it to let it rip and i mean that is close to being a massive play you know this he hits this it scores it's a lead highlight just that close inches away from a massive play again love the design here they really had a plan defensively to jack these tight ends up at the line of scrimmage so when he comes across this is not an easy block coming down here and we're blocking a defensive end he ends up losing and this guy hits jalen but right here this route lean into the corner and then run this post all the way across the field it helps when the turf monster gets the free safety but still nice vision more than anything else showed a lot of high football iq i thought nice vision free safety i mean come on bro but man that is close to being a great play so close tough miss though goodness again watch that tight end come down c94 sees them squares up engages them throws them go get a hit on boom barely but again that's not an easy read see it throw it all the way across the field and just inches away from being a massive play but it was exciting for him to be able to see it let it go rip it there just weren't a lot of throws down the field here's a third and seven we're gonna go mesh again watch the mesh come from right to left big time punt return left they drop them the beauty of mesh for all those raiders out there nice job again really loved seeing the eagles call plays that you knew that he was comfortable running and has run a lot in his past again just a variation of mesh at a three by one a bunch of different ways to do mesh but allows him to pull the trigger play a little point guard from the pocket i just liked seeing i love seeing coaches put players in plays that they are comfortable with so i really don't care how you sort it out up here someone's running the shallow someone's usually running over the middle of the field someone's usually running a middle hook then down here you get the mesh coming underneath and then this pump return right when they get dropped again he's probably run you know 10 plus iterations of mesh in his life there it is it's really just triple picks it's a fancy way to say triple pick beautiful wide open corner three really nice big time third seven made some nice plays on third down on some really crucial downs down a distance smooth in the pocket a little bit of a slight dovetail you can see it drop wise there lined up to throw there it is clean doesn't get easier than that that's wide open for sundays my goodness next one here touchdown fourth and two again down the distance really crucial down in distance he's executing at a high level he's going to be hot here they're bringing six we're throwing a fade down here to the bottom again really calm composed under pressure staring down the barrel of a gun off the edge pressure here to the left side the left tackle has a big duel i mean he's got to take two he takes the inside one does a nice job actually over sets on the inside jalen hurts one again that that's a big time throw look at him get all his cleats in the ground right there there's a dude staring right into your chest i mean this is really impressive give your guy a shot go make a play for him big time more than anything more than the accuracy more than the concept i just love how he hang tough no flinching no chucking duck boom blasted can't follow through give your guy a shot touchdown fourth and two first start ever man really impressive i thought this was interesting how they blocked this i'm not going to get into the details of it but they do a nice job however they sort this thing out to have the farthest guy come from outside this sea gap which you always want into the face of where you're trying to throw for the hot also really nice job protection-wise here everybody except the left tackle awesome big time execution massive but it wasn't all clean so first and ten right here we get a kind of a go to the bottom with an out and like a wrap in up top and this was one of those plays where for me it just looked fast from the pocket meaning i thought he was operating quickly so we'll talk about it when we watch it again but really you know he misses what i think are three wide op not wide open open people now it ends up working out and we're fortunate that it works out there's a number of plays in this game that he's probably fortunate worked out but to me this was one of those plays from the pocket where he's playing fast what i mean by that is playing too fast getting through the reads too quickly so without being in the room knowing exactly what they're trying to do if they have a zone man look or open closed look without knowing exactly what the read is let's just assume it's left to right i don't think it probably is but let's just assume that it is right here here's the route this chance at a touchdown he throws up the mailbox potential touchdown this little out right here he gets off of it too quickly homeboy bench presses this linebacker type onto the ground i mean full-on bench presses them up top we get a variation of wrap in so a hitch with this right here this is wide open open wide open all three of them it looks to me that he looks here gets off this side too quickly comes back here for whatever reason can't see it and then comes all the way back to the tight end so i know that's a lot he goes left to right to left and it's just because homeboy bench presses them that he's that wide open so again lots of stuff moving here let's look at the route at the bottom of the screen first if he's checking down here corner is trying to get cute play two you know that that's that's gapping them on the outside you know oftentimes corners won't believe that running backs are going to run a real route out there so they'll kind of cheat but again he's mailboxing them right there that's a touchdown to the bottom of the screen to the number two now the out boom get off me straight arm i mean that's wide open yeah that's also a penalty up top check that wrap in i got the guys wrong but the number three runs a wrap in like it even better like that and that's wide open too with the wrap in so whether maybe he can't see him whatever he doesn't pull the trigger what i do like about it is he doesn't panic he stays alive keeps a strong base is able to use his vision which he showed multiple times high football iq again as far as playing from the pocket right here just a little concerning on this play one two three you know for whatever reason he's off of it right there he's already to the middle it's wide open to the left he comes back he can't see right there probably got five skyscrapers in front of him doesn't panic bounces around finds him nice job not perfect by any means just acknowledging the fact that playing from the pocket right there probably wasn't it half time if you dig the channel and you haven't already please subscribe hit the bell get the notifications let you know when we go live when we put out new content i very much appreciate the support for the channel getting close to 100 000 subscribers i really do need to come up with some sort of video idea so let me know in the comments if you have that idea as well again thank you for the continued support enjoy the rest of the video next one here is a bit of a scramble drill for me watkins lets him down a little bit at the line of scrimmage at the sideline i love what he does here at the sideline scrambles doesn't run out of bounds doesn't throw it away gives himself the max amount of time to be able to make a play so it doesn't matter what the concept is down the field he doesn't like it we're scrambling he's out the pocket we got double chips on there it is instead of throwing it away right here a lot of guys would just throw it away this is not that's not a good look he gets to the sideline stays alive then throws it away that's really nice this that's elite quarterbacking outside the pocket stay alive on the sideline so close don't make a bad decision now my man quest really lets him down i thought on the sideline first on the chip and then on the sideline again talked about it on a few different videos on the channel when new quarterbacks come into play there are different uh skill sets outside the pocket sometimes wide receivers have to learn to play with guys who can keep plays alive you know they probably do scramble drill in training camp maybe a few times during the season but this is an opportunity for me right here check this chip out here on 94 on the right i mean i guess we call that a chip tough break the pocket now right here there's a bunch of different things you can do most people would tell you if you're deep the deepest go deep if you're across the field you're coming over if you're on the sideline this is where things get a little funky right here looks like he's trying to run for space wouldn't recommend that when you're on the sideline this is the part that's really the craft of playing on the perimeter in the league you want to once you see the quarterback run to you you want to turn your back push vertically up the field and then come inside off the rails what are the rails sideline hashes so you don't want to ever have your feet come in and touch these sideline hashes or the rails you want to push up come down and give the quarterback the rails to be able to throw it and get your feet down when you turn your back and get pushed to the sideline now they know that these guys get paid too they're trying to eject you and push you out once you're out can't touch it can't be the first to touch it so again they just let him down a little bit on the perimeter here you can see right i mean you're just running out of bounds bro you got to push up push off that defender come down come back give him something to throw at crazy frustrating but i love what he did at the sidelines staying alive and making a good decision nice next one here this is a really nice one it's just a clean rpo we're running a little zone to the left with a slant by the number two up top or a dart it doesn't get easier than the conflict defender blitzing wide open you can't even see him on the screen here it's coming in the c gap there it is i mean that's clean we'll draw it up a really nice job again he's run variations of this play for years it's clean simple strictly a numbers thing conflict defender's right here in rpo world we're running some variation of zone to the left wide zone when he blitzes when the conflict defender blitzes it doesn't get easier it's like he's not there so x him out and then run a slant right there that's a lot of space yes please every day again just like to show the efficiency of it how clean the look is again check that out i mean that that's stealing boop check his footwork out base no heel click smooth clean no waisted motion on the body on the brake love seeing that again from the back end it's even cleaner you can't even see the conflict defenders off the screen really nice but again and not that anybody would expect it to be a perfectly clean game but there were just enough of these things were structurally you know execution wise for me you know this is preseason football what do i mean by that we're running stick lion like stick lion is about as simple as you can possibly get stick lion vs man not great i mean that the best thing about that play is the wide receiver playing db so you know am i mad i'm not mad at anybody but do you analyze jalen hurts here on the reed the throw whatever let's go stick lion exactly what it is pretty sure i have a video on stick and lion but that is stick lion is usually double slant in the west coast world with stick usually there is a clear route here certain offenses will allow you to throw this clear this looks like one of them the thing about these clears is that it's not quite as good as a go because it goes usually at best release so you go inside or outside on a clear you almost always have to go must outside release so when you must outside release this guy can really push it to the sideline stick line is just not a great play verse man you really only have three options here if you want to throw the clear or you've got this double slant and it's easy for me to sit here with the clicker and say yeah the ball goes there you know i think a veteran quarterback is going to throw the double the lion more often than the clear but again if you like this matchup down here at the bottom of the screen pull the trigger but to me the play call here stick line is just a it's a preseason call like we got better plays than this for the nfl i just you know maybe you throw the flat but it's just not a good play versus stick is not a good play versus man-to-man again and to me he's like trying to look off and throw the go here he doesn't win the goat doesn't win so don't just predetermine to throw it you know nothing about that says win so it's a combination of him pre-determining where to go the play called the scheme don't love it again you can see him try to hold that middle field player with his eyes and check to the right one two three throw but again i mean where are you supposed to throw the ball i mean there's nowhere to go that's an l on the outside it's an l on the decision it's an l on the concept a two minute warning second quarter this is a massive play this is just zone read and 91's got no shot with hertz again to me this is when it when i say pre-season e these are clean looks middle field closed second and long coming out the two minute warning jalen hurts burst any defensive end in space is going to almost always be an l that's a massive play backed up second and long just zone read you can see the left tackle telling him what kind of block he's going there it is i mean you know they just don't know how fast he is till you get out there and see and play on sundays it's hard to say yeah you run a 4-8 for whatever at the combine but this is just simple zone re there's there's nothing complicated about this call that's who we're reading running right here and the wide receiver down here to the bottom of the screen does a nice job running off and then coming back getting a block at the end this is just too easy way too easy of a call great job though doesn't take anything away from jalen hurts those plays are there to be made make them absolutely you just i'm not sure how sustainable this is i mean pretty soon the defensive ends are going to know hey i got a box wider i got a squeeze coming from a lot wider can't give up that kind of space to him on the perimeter this two minute i thought really kind of exposed the saints on a number of different levels obviously this is ridiculous just house call terrible fits for all my fit fans out there but again i mean without knowing exactly what the front is meaning the call defensively that's just way too easy within two minutes but that zone read just earlier two plays earlier were the reason they were allowed to do this again this is what rpos do to you nub you're gonna run bubble variation of basically just triple option here give the dive one bad fit two bad fits one soft db back there some bad safety tackling and that's a wrap so fitwise here we get somebody coming off the edge so we're here we're here we're here we're here it gets a little confusing with how they block it on the front side here because they go here and then he comes up and what this does really important when he releases up on this db this db doesn't know exactly what's going on what i mean by that is this release could be pass or could be blocking so he can't fit quite as fast as he wants to or probably should so that's one issue the other issue now depending on exactly what the front is where his fit is we're here he really you know theoretically would be great if he didn't jump into this i know it's easy with the clicker because what happens here is we end up going combo one-on-one little bass here he comes into this gap and because this combo drives him all the way back when my man goes to jump back into this gap there's two people in the gap and nobody on the freeway to the end zone so again just the way that they ended up blocking this thing when he goes here and he comes back to fit to technically what's probably this gap that gap is no longer there why because this man got debo'd out of there so when he jumps back there's two guys in the gap and i'll show you exactly what i'm talking about great job running it great job blocking it up nice scheme but this is this is not great run defense again that backside b gap two guys are in it right there right nobody is in the front side a gap great job by the left guard i mean get out of there boom i mean that's and then the safety just not making it happen gotta love playing quarterback getting two minute touchdowns before the half on 80 plus yard runs yes please then they get the ball back the saints go three and out get the ball back here three by one and now this is really where jalen hurts shines in the first half for me you can make the argument that maybe he throws that point man on the bunch corner route on this flood concept but someone's right in his face he gets flushed a little and again just to me not picking on anybody it's just a truth this feels pre-season-y okay russian four nobody spying the quarterback everybody getting drops not paying attention to the quarterback and he just runs for way too far i mean down the sideline like at what point you say hey maybe we should rush three and spy maybe we should put a spy on the guy who's killing us running the ball again had a plan all day to deal with the tight ends boom again not forcing any throws down the field and then just hey they're going to give it to you take it no apology needed thank you it's a big time run right before half one more time i just you know it's hard to it's hard not to at least acknowledge the fact that this probably is not the call that they would do if they played this play again obviously thanks captain obvious but doesn't take anything away from jalen hurts did a great job with his legs the whole first half you know i'd love the decision making very rarely if ever you know there was one later in the game that we'll see tomorrow contested ball but didn't make a whole lot of sketchy decisions with the ball big time football iq and then used in his legs i mean i don't think people i don't think the saints really knew what a weapon he was going to be running the ball until this part of the game come back again four verticals basically a variation of four verticals this time they rush five for sword of rush five one peels off for the back when they peel off there it is right at the gut again hurting him with his legs so at least they made a change they didn't just rush four but when they got into this front you know whether it's 56 or the db up top who has the back somebody has the back again nobody is spying the quarterback and that's just too easy up the pipe and these are things that i think the league you know whoever's playing the eagles next they're not going to make the same mistake trust me so it's great that it worked out just not sure how replicable it is you know they did a great job basically doing a great job patriots in this last bit of the first half scored a rushing touchdown for 80 yards ended up i think hitting the upright here from a chip shot but again this is jalen hurts he makes this gives his team an opportunity for three points right before half yes please so jalen hurts first half first start uh long video thanks so much for hanging to the end i really did enjoy it that's why it ended up being so long lots of plays in there that i didn't want to cheat really thought it provided the full context paint the picture of exactly what they were asking them to do how they were trying to stop him how he played where he maybe left some throws out on the field but how he really kind of energized this team in the first half with using his legs some of the concepts that he was comfortable with from back in his collegiate days all sorts of those things kind of come together to allow the eagles to really put together a really nice kind of closing to that first half getting the long touchdown using jalen hurts legs to get a field goal opportunity lots of stuff to give them an opportunity to go beat the saints in the second half so thanks so much for hanging to the end i will see you tomorrow part two have a good one
