[Music] [Music] [Music] hey everyone today i'm going to talk to you guys about a great native plant that can be used in the garden setting called jacob's ladder also known as polymonium reptans in the scientific community jacob's ladder is great for under a tree it needs some dappled sun or part shade and it's a small statured plant the flowering stock is only going to get about a foot and a half off the ground so we have those garden plots right under your tree in the front yard or just anything with some shade to it would be a perfect environment for jacob's ladder as far as how wet it needs to be it really likes messy conditions messy conditions means that it would have a balanced water supply throughout the summer now when we're talking about gardens aesthetics obviously is at the front of the line one of the nice parts about jacob's ladder is you can control how long it blooms if you want you can cut the flower stems at the base and it will actually shoot up more flowering stems it it'll depend on how well established the plant is and how much reserve energy it has to continue sending out flowering stalks but you do have the ability to continue the flower show through a longer portion of the summer so the name jacob's ladder actually comes from the dream of jacob from the biblical verse if you look at the foliage of it it has a lot of small leaflets coming off of the same the same leaf stalk this is called pinnate compound leafing so these leaves actually look like a ladder like if you put it up vertically that you'd be able to climb these leaflets up to the top hence the name jacob's ladder so jacob's ladder is a great source of nectar and pollen for native bees there's a whole mess of native bees that use it such as bumble bees carpenter bees mason bees the list goes on but it would be a great benefit for your native pollinators [Music]
