we are we're here and I believe that we're here for a noble person purpose I believe it's important to give honor to those whom honor is due I believe it's important to give flowers why you can smell flowers and so that's why we're here we want to do something that I believe will be for the glory and honor of God and so I'd like to ask you to stand and in just a moment the Evans family will come in and as they come in if you will show them some love alright ladies and gentlemen I present to you brother Jack Evans jr. and his beautiful wife Vicki Evans show them some love would you by the Herbert Evans my wife Marcia Tillman and now ladies and gentlemen a big big round of applause for brother Jack Evans senior and his wife Patricia Evans [Music] big round of applause big round of applause big round of applause big round of applause be seated please ladies and gentlemen in just a moment you'll see you'll see an unbelievable spokesperson for the Word of God video collage please [Music] a leader in anything and a leader has to leave you cannot have all Chiefs and no Indians is that making any claims in the power everything that God made it just like he wanted and the reason we're in trauma tonight is because man is gone about his own way making his own invention was trying to impress her preacher when he came to dinner and soon as as soon as he walked in mother told her little son she said honey going bring mama that book you seal with all the time little boy look daddy said she said gone and bring down that book that she loves so much little boy rantin man got the TV Guide I remember debating dr. Jamal bad away at Howard University about two years ago and he was talking about Jesus was not God and then I quoted John 8 and verse 58 where Jesus said before Abraham was I am doctor madam he got up and said he's the doctor Evans quoted John 8:58 where Jesus said before Abraham was I am he said that doesn't mean that Jesus was God he said why didn't he say before Adam was I am I got up during my speech went to John 17 and verse 5 Jesus was praying there and said now father glorify me with that ho himself look with little glory that I had when I was with thee before the world is that Heavenly Father has a son that son has made the head of a holy nation the holy nation is the Church of Christ yes he's real he's alive as we have sung tonight and he lives and moves in the affairs of men our God is real and alive and the greatest testimony to his being real and alive is the fact that we are alive and in him we live move Nietzsche is there tonight but God lives they have to understand the authority of the Supreme Court of Heaven in the United States we have nine men and women on that car on the court of heaven we have three the father the son came to Fort Worth to debate me six cars of policemen met WD Muhammad's car at the DFW Airport to make sure that he would be protected not only by his own security but by the police department of Fort Worth and Arlington and all through them they were on alert all on the radio talking about where he was at certain points took him to the ninth or 10th floor of the Hilton Hotel put him in there nobody could stay on the floor where he stayed with the exception of those who were in his entourage they had plainclothesman riding the elevators to make sure no one to go to that floor and hurt mr. Mohammed they had metal detectors coming into the auditorium everyone in some of you were there had to come through the metal detector and each one was searched for guns and knives I was sitting right next to him I told my wife I said nobody's go kill it but me [Applause] I said they are you searching searching men for guns and I'm sitting right back with the sword I have worked in the Churches of Christ for 58 years as a gospel preacher and I hope that I've made some kind of a contribution to the cause of Christ as a result of my work in preaching public crusade I had simply dealt with the fundamentals of the faith that men might understand what they are and become cured of gods and yield for God thereafter with the with the brothers with the brothers who have our programs which you pass the programs I please to everyone the brothers don't have our programs we pass our programs out as quickly as we possibly can that's all our programs out if you hadn't already got one I want to I want to give an official welcome to each of you to this tribute to the celebration to this appreciation for a one who we feel is deserving of it it is a twofold we are celebrating our brother in Christ brother Jack Evans who has been a gospel preacher for so long and also his educational accomplishments as dr. Jack Jack Evans and we want we want to thank all the congregations around the city who have come to share in this great day we believe one of the reasons why we are here today a brother Evans was baptized here in Houston Texas here at the Phil for our Church of Christ years and yeah I don't know how many years ago but years and years ago and and the brothers from around the city felt like it was befitting for us to do this here at the field War Church of Christ now brother Patterson brother Patterson would you that's this is brother Patterson right here that's raising his hands and many of us and try to give checks to me and I don't take money but this brother Patterson is is receiving all the donations and checks that individuals are bringing and so if you still need to bring a check or bring some money to someone see brother passing and he'll take real good care of you how's everybody doing it this evening we know that it is it is it is sort of a sacrifice for us to be here but we feel like this is definitely fitting for all of us here let's make sure everybody gets a program make sure everybody gets the program alright here comes my nice brother tero williams if he would come and lead us in our prevalent ear will you go to God and pray with me their father with our eyes closed heads bowed and our hearts lifted up to you we come this evening this afternoon with this gratitude upon our hearts for just another opportunity to be together and for this purpose to show the respect and the adoration that we have one of your servants dear father who has through the years shown his dedication showed his willingness to be self sacrificial who have put his all and all into the work that you put before him we thank you for dr. Evans dear father we thank you for his love we thank you for his family sister Evans and his children who have all locked arms together to work towards a common goal and that is to further Christian education of which I am a recipient of their love and as an eyewitness to dr. Evans as my two-year stepdad south-western seeing his everyday being there to do everything he could possibly do to further the cause of Christian education I thank you for laying your hands on him I thank you for touching him and leading him and allowing him to be that person that would carry the torch at the time we needed it so badly and we thank the Father for each and every one who is here this afternoon and support and showing that gratitude for one who so selflessly put forth all the efforts he could to do those things to for the Christian education at Southwestern Christian College and not just at Southwest the father but to preach all over this nation and in foreign parts to be able to share your word without any hesitancy whatsoever with the strength and the conviction to know that he knew that he knew that he knew that you are our Savior and and unapologetically to tell the world of his love for you father as we go through this celebration of his accomplishments we pray the father that you just continue to bless him with all the blessings you see he stands in need of we pray that you give him a long life and health and we're just so thankful their father they were able to give him these flowers while he can smell them that we can tell him we love him we can tell him that we appreciate him while he can hear those words and that we can wrap our arms around this family and say thank you for a life well-lived my father as we continue to go through this celebration we we pray to follow the things that we do and the way that we do them will be pleasing and will be acceptable in that eyesight as our pray in Jesus name Amen again we want to welcome you and we believe that today is a day that we get a chance to say to someone that deserves it I love you so everybody shout I love you that's for you brother Evans that's for you so step and show him some love would you show him some love sister Beverly Bradley is an alumna she too is a graduate of southwestern Christian college she has been so good in that she has put together a chorus group here in Houston and the chorus group if you close your eyes you might think it's the old southwestern [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's always this thing [Applause] so it's obvious that Beverly had an ear and she was at Southwestern and those sounds that she grew up with as a student she's brought to Houston and all of us get a chance to enjoy them show Beverly in the group some love again would you please and and now and now I am asking all Southwestern alumna whether you were in the course or not whether you sound like Paul Jones or not no if you if you attended South Western Christian College would you please come to the front please come to the front [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah unbelievable show up some love again that was absolutely beautiful every once in a while you need to stop and check someone's pulse and see what beats sometimes sometimes when you check a person's pulse you'll see what really matters most to them I want you to sit for a moment and watch and listen to what matters [Music] from the past it began a never-ending struggle a moral and spiritual fight to keep the dream alive an institution built on hope and love for mankind with the purpose of enriching ones future through the means of education to the present it continues a seed for black prominence an avenue for talent a library of history standing tall making great strides but fighting to keep the dream alive I'm keeping my three ma [Music] keeping my fee [Music] Oh [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and you must [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] evening [Music] [Music] into the future will it metamorphose out of a dream into a reality an institution of higher learning offering things only a dream could conjure one man's courage honesty and spiritual soundness set in motion a good memory for thousands gone and hope for thousands to come today right now we are keepers of the dream in our tests as we breathe life at this moment is to keep the dream alive [Music] [Music] [Applause] well the evidence you kept the dream alive you worked you sacrificed you made a difference and I want you to know that this city appreciates you god bless you for keeping the dream alive [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] beautiful voice beautiful lady no one can sing that high soprano note quite like you we we thank you I know you went all over this country singing the Lord's Prayer and singing the song if I can help somebody and so I want to say to you sister Evans you mean a lot to us please show sister Evans some love [Applause] [Music] [Applause] look what's the purpose while we're here while we're here I don't know of any two people that have quite touched the Church of Christ like dr. Evans and sister Evans and dr. Evans with his unbelievable ability to articulate the ability to debate the ability to crack a joke and not smile but Evans has stood up for this Brotherhood and not only has he stood up for this Brotherhood Southwestern Christian college has planted people all over this city all over the state all over this United States all over this world because one man stood flat-footed and said I believe in the dream I grew up sitting around the breakfast table on Sunday morning and my mom and dad would find that album and we would listen to Southwestern Christian College cesareans your voice it rings it resonates you have touched the world with your voice god bless the two of you we love you show them some love with you in a braggadocious way I want to say that the city of Atlanta can claim that Martin Luther King jr. has his roots their city of New York New York can claim that Malcolm X has his roots their city of Louisville Kentucky can claim that the great Muhammad Ali has his roots there Nashville Tennessee can claim that Marshall Keeble has his roots there but ladies and gentlemen there is nothing like dr. Jack Evans and his roots in Houston you are a superhero I want to I want to share with you that this program was put together by Gary Smith and Thomas Foster and I had a little bit to do with it so we're stepping into a part where there are a number of dynamic articulate speakers and so there is a feeling that when you put a lot of good speakers on a program you might be in trouble and and so we we sat around the table and we tried to decide who was going to be the emcee and we put Gary Smith's name down and the program was printed with Gary Smith's name and Gary Smith sent me a nasty note and we agreed that we didn't want to church to see us fight so I claim the responsibility but let me just tell you as we get ready to open the door to our speakers and I want to to walk up and say here's a card you got three minutes brother foster has alerted everyone that they have three minutes so I don't I don't have a minute cart two minutes card three minutes card I don't have that but what I do have here me is in the back there is the song when I grow too old to dream Southwestern's song and at two minutes and 45 seconds you will hear it in your ear and three minutes you will not be able to hear it and the audience will be clapping do I need to say that again all right is that Kadena do that Smitty we are faster is that alright did it alright if you if you peruse the program you see that there are a number of individuals who will come and proclaim the uniqueness of brother Evans ancestor Evans and they are both super heroes brother Tim Daniels will lead us with brother foster and brother Tim Daniels will lead us with your super hero a for brother Evans and then sister Louis Holland and sister Pam Adams will come and they will speak in behalf of sister Evans so would you tell worry we cut together now remember two minutes 45 seconds starts to go up okay show Tim some love as he comes come on Tim [Applause] first of all thank you to the fifth for our church and John and gear and brother Faust again for making this happen then they can go a great job great program they've done a great job my first memories I'm gonna stay within my time but my first memories was I was about four years old maybe five maybe got a fuzzy on this this is what I remember at the old fidelity Church of Christ or brother Jeff Waterhouse when they would do first son of sins and kids would sit around the poop and it was that wooden building and this is what I remember dr. Evans that they say we got this young man he's a Southwestern Christian college he's getting ready to preach and we were sitting there and that's what I remember the first sermon dr. Evans and I did not realize that being about 13 years later I would be at Southwestern Christian college and he would be the president of that school that he went to and then he was teaching a class and he didn't teach very many class because he was so busy as the president so everybody wanted to get a doctor of his class and I was one of them brother Evans I got in there and I'll tell you we started off with about 60 people but by mid term we were down about 12 people that was the most intense class he did not settle for anything less than excellence brilliance if it wasn't the best he would give it right back to you I've gone to other schools been blessed go to other schools and other classes since then but I tell you I'll never forget that he poured himself out one of the years out of the two years he literally poured himself into us and I just thank God for every moment every moment brother ever John said it you insist Evans you carried that school on your shoulders you made sacrifices you and your wife that many of us will never ever realize I'm a better man could be a better man but I'm as good as I am partly because I said in your class since there is God bless you y'all's footprint is all over and only eternity will tell the life that didn't have been touched by what you have done the song we song when we go to grow too old to dream southwestern I will always remember we will always remember in Jack Jr be your family and your wife god bless you guys love you and thank God for allowing and sister Evans allowing your lives you and brother Evans to be such a blessing to us and we love you and I just what all of us we can't let our children and grandchildren forget what they have done if we don't tell them I was gonna tell him thank God for you super hero [Applause] good afternoon I am Louis T Holland the coiler native of the United ladies of Houston here in Houston and I'm also the national cheerleading for southwestern Christian college and brother and sister Evans we appreciate you for being here today and you know that you are superheroes and when I looked in Webster to find out what was a hero or Shero it says a person who exhibits great courage one who is admired for her achievement and her noble qualities and we salute you today for being an aberration admiration to all of us I also saw that it was one who is the central figure in an event and this event that's why we are here today sister Evans to present to you and to say to everybody that she's our superhero and she's a hero because of the many things the sevens that you've done for many many boys and girls at Southwestern and not only for those that southwestern but for those of us that are Bowser women at Southwestern you are always there for us when we come up in November I go to you and ask what are some things that you want me to do and you are always there supporting me and all of the ladies and I would like for all of the ladies here today to just stand and give her a round of applause for being a super hero [Applause] we admire you for your contribution and love that you have demonstrated toward all of us you have touched us in some way and we appreciate you very very much you are a super superhero and we honor and salute you today may God bless you I'm Patricia Adams Freeman Adams I guess I should say Tobruk Foster this is not something I do I don't think I'd be a benefit but I said I would do it before brother and sister Evans I went to southwestern will it was six of my siblings they went to southwestern we owe my family old southwestern a lot we end up with five preachers and elders and one brother he's not very faithful now but he you know he did go to southwestern I met my love there and I gratefully thank southwestern for that I wouldn't have been in Houston if I had not gone to southwestern back to sister Evans sister Evans I didn't really know exactly what to say about you since then as we traveled together several times we traveled to the national election ships and in a seven passenger station wagon some time it was eight of us we travel all over the world miss Devon she traveled with us and I had the pleasure of being in the group it was for students presence of Stevens we traveled Europe for three weeks and we surely enjoyed bad I thought about Jack when he said so Stevens voice has been all over the world I have to tell you secret we went to Europe we got to Europe it was only six of us and soprano sisters just the ethnics was out all the family we got to your ancestors could not say a word she couldn't it wasn't even a whisper she could say anything but the funniest thing we got through singing we were there for a campaign Crusade for Christ we're in this big big building and we toured the city during the day and knock doors and night we saw and cersei this would still get up with us and she always and she got both claps and so she's the last day I think we would that she was a purchasing young lil but I just want to say some savings I know she's she's she's put her she's done a lot she's she wasn't you know she wasn't a Dean so she she did was really on campus is much [Applause] Commitments however we have a proclamation and brother Tucker from the South Union Church of Christ is going to read it please share some love with brother Tucker [Applause] good afternoon saints of God dr. Evans I am NOT the mayor of this city neither am i a congresswoman but by God's grace I am a gospel preacher and you have influenced me a great deal we thank God for you we thank God for who you are and we thank God for the tremendous sacrifice that you've made to the kingdom of God sister Evans we love you as well and we have a proclamation here that we would like to salute the Evans family becomes fresh from the may its desk it is a proclamation of the city of Houston and it is written to dr. and sister Evans [Applause] thank you brother Tucker and we are thankful to the mayor it's your day by the evidences your dates the statements god bless you showing some love again we just show him some love they have love show him love okay again we would like to have all the students former students of southwestern Christian college to come up and get right behind me on the stage if you are a former student of Southwestern Christian college please come one of one of the gifts of Southwestern Christian college was to become a minister to become an elder become a minister's wife and elders wife a Bible School teacher just a faithful Christian and so brother Alpha paws who is an elder at the Garden Oaks Church of Christ has put some words together and he is going to represent the student body I know if we would pass them like each person would have a story to tell each person would love to tell the story but we have selected by the Alpha powers to come and speak in behalf of the student body so brother powers wherever you are please come show him some love [Applause] before I was an elder at the Garden Oaks Church of Christ I was a product of this place here the fifth Ward Church of Christ was where I was born and grew up and developed a love for Southwestern Christian college as a student some of the guys that are here now or came to southwestern to be gospel ministers but there are so many of us that were never had never an intent to be a gospel minister gospel preacher but our goal was to get a great education the atmosphere at Southwestern was one that although I grew up here at fifth Ward just like many of us grew up at our own congregations we were able to transcend and continue our education and love for God at Southwestern they created an environment that was conducive to what God would have to do while it was 1977 that I graduated and as a student sister-sister Evans I don't remember a thing that you taught me in class but what I do remember the things I was so much more important were taught outside of the classroom the fact that we learned to love one another the fact that we had a camaraderie that was there the fact that we were able to sing and practice our gifts there on campus in a true sense we learned we truly learn to love the Lord in that environment we learned to love God's people we developed friends that we would have the rest of our lives we found something there at Southwestern that I don't believe we could have found anywhere in the entire world so I am NOT a gospel minister so I didn't go and are many of the folks here in our gospel ministers but they have grown up in God's kingdom and you touch their lives by touching their lives you've touched every church that they've attended you've helped do the planning the organization the development of every church that they attended from their classrooms to the pulpit to the singing you touched it so as a student you literally changed all of our lives far better so in the truest sense we thank you we thank you for southwestern we thank you for the legacy we thank you for the example that you said when there was issues you know there's always an issue at a school every now and then brother Evans will come before the student body and fix it it was fixed once and for all may God bless you we thank you for your legacy we thank you for the example that you said we thank you for all the things that you've done throughout all the years at Southwestern thank you someone has said it really doesn't take a lot of smarts to count the number of seeds in an apple cut the Apple open count to seize but then it really takes a person with a lot of insight to be able to count the number of apples in a sea I wrote up with sister Evans this afternoon and she was pointing to someone and she said that's one of my children oh it wasn't jack her but David it was a graduate of southwestern Christian College and so but they haven't sister Evans we are your children we love you okay you you took the best care of us you changed our lives and so please know this is just a Houston connection and it's not all of the Houston connection but please know you mean so much so so much to us guys and girls if you want to pass by and get close to them do it now show them some love show them some love so that's that's that's part of the student body we're taking little parts of southwestern and saying to brother and sister heavens we appreciate you and so there have been a number of faculty members from Houston that served at Southwestern brother Gerald Lee served for many years as a faculty member at Southwestern Christian college sister joy raspberry served as a faculty member from southwestern Christian college in just a little bit you'll hear brother Gerald Lee but this moment this moment we want to give way to sister Joey raspberry please show joi some love [Applause] okay guys hurry before they start playing the music in my ears okay it would be embarrassing if they started playing the music in my ears if you don't get a chance to hug them in a little bit you'll get a chance to give them some money so don't worry again what you just saw was some representations of the student body and what you're about to hear is a dynamic person that is a representation of the faculty department please show sister Joyce some love sure some love [Applause] if with pleasure you are viewing any work that a man is doing and you like him or you love him tell him now don't withhold your approbation till the parson makes oration and he lies with snow lilies or his brow for no matter how you shouted he really won't care about it you won't know how many teardrops you have shared if you think some praises to him now's the time to slip it to him for he cannot read his tombstone when he's dead more than Fame and more than money is the common kind and sunny and a hearty warm approval of a friend oh it gives to life sweet savour and it strengthens those who waver and it gives one heart and courage to the end if one earns your praise bestow it if you like him or her let them know it let the words of encouragement be said don't wait till life is over and a man or woman lives beneath the clover for none of us can read our tombstone when we're dead one of the greatest lessons I ever learned came from a fourth grade dropout I know that sounds like an oxymoron sort of like jumbo shrimp but it is true my father dropped out of school in fourth grade you know the whole story having to pick cotton in yada-yada-yada in the midst of the Jim Crow ISM era in the Civil War he and his beautiful bride at age 16 matriculated to Houston Texas from tips in Texas to create a better life for their family I was the quintessential Church of Christ Christian girl I was in church Sunday morning Sunday night Wednesday night Bible class Bible bows youth conferences the list goes on and on Crusades for Christ my family did that for me my daddy traded in his the light for Bible and became a deacon in the Lord's Church during the midst of all of that I received a scholarship to attend New York University Tisch School for the Arts while I slept my parents were driving me to New York four or five hours later I ended up at 200 bowzer circle my dad set my luggage in the circle and told me to get out and they drove off a young lady saw me crying asked me what was wrong I said I had no intentions of ending up here but she went and found her aunt and uncle which happened to be dr. and sister Evans and lo and behold they registered me in school and allowed me to be a part of that family before I left for southwestern and when my dad passed away he said I gotta tell you why I did what I did my oldest sister was murdered in 99 and these are things that we don't like to talk about in the Church of Christ but she was murdered in 99 I had another sister who was living in a psychiatric hospital because of drug and alcohol abuse and my only brother who was the starting pitcher in Wiley College in Marshall Texas who had a teacher certification never had a traffic ticket was stabbed 21 times by his estranged wife and left for dead my dad said you you are only hope so he sent you to southwestern to get that undergirding that firm foundation southwestern accepted me gave me my voice back and when I finished Southwestern I was no longer that quiet little girl I enrolled at Texas Southern University became the top speaker and debater in the country I went on to study in Paris France London England Rome Italy Prague Czechoslovakia and everybody gives dr. Freeman credit for that but it came from Batman that's why I got my start so I'm grateful it's difficult to tell this story and when I told my mom I was gonna tell this story she said I will not show up today because I will cry this story always makes her cry but I tell you it was those country folk from East Texas who told me you know what I would rather see you and I would be so proud of you try and fail than to not try it all it was those country folk from East Texas who told me that you are amazing you articulate you are polished you are everything that God wants you to be and then when I entered South Weston they cared enough for me they knew I was silent for is that my music that is my music you understand the story god bless you and thank you for everything you've done [Applause] [Music] [Music] so Joey some love would you it's kind of hard to drink all this in it so good and it's so true when we were putting this together we had all kinds of conversations and one of the pieces that we all agreed on without any doubt as we wanted some ministers to share if there is something eternal it's the soul in a Baris a person who touches the eternal it's de minister and so yes we've heard from the students yes we've heard from the faculty we have selected three ministers that will come and and just share a bit about their love and their insights for brother and sister Evans and the South Western Christian college by the Paul Jones brother Peter Marshall Peter Martin Peter Marshall is a great preacher to them right and brother Gerald Lee so y'all my friends right hey y'all know they play the music right she'll Paul general some logo just show Paul Johnson look I'm not particularly fond of getting up behind sister raspberry any kind of berry blackberry Du Barry a superhero is a person endowed with extraordinary abilities who engage in work above and beyond the ordinary a super skillful person who fights for the cause of all people brother evidence you have personified all of these qualities in the in some you become a superhero many years ago when you put forth extraordinary ability to fight and become a champion but the gospel calls and Christian education for our youth you have been a thorn in the devas flesh for over 60 years in this Brotherhood until the devil tried his best to kill southwestern Christian college he laughed he wanted to see plywood over the windows and a lot padlocked over the doors but when they said it couldn't be done you took hold of the gospel power and became president at an early age oh boy you plough the Brotherhood feel from New York to Chicago from Montreal in the east of Vancouver in in the West California Montana Idaho Terrell and Texas in a man that would barely move you took a worn out stationary decent wedding and rather and an old land with a sextet priests same bed recruited students for the cause of Christ you travel the highway from course to course sleepy hungry and broke but you didn't give up being our superhero you brought Southwestern Christian college from the valley to the mountainside from nowhere to somewhere you preach from tips the grand auditorium television newspaper anywhere never give you a pulpit it was said that you would have preached in hell if it could bring you back and with little or no money with a little of no money you stood told to stall shoulder-to-shoulder with Giants of denominationalism humanism secularism you fought the Giants of Hinduism Buddhism Sikhism Taoism Confucianism and his law you devoted you debated all these fellows and you are you stood with the debaters the haters the agitators the procrastinators and the dictators you put up with the good the bad and the ugly you pulled the gospel plow all of this Brotherhood and made us all proud you were champion of southwestern Christian collagen for the cause of Christ gratitude today is hard to find is easier to find in a dictionary than it is in the sanctuary the Bible tells us three times Deuteronomy 25 first Corinthians 9 2nd Timothy 5:18 don't muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn you have labored war your laborer is worthy of his house brother Evans you plowed the field with every conceivable plow that a farmer could ever have and there are farmers language you use the turning for the sweep stop the middle Buster the cultivator the rape the hole yes now in your garden years you have come you have been let out of the field the Ox is out yo your health is not as good as it used to be but thank God you brought us this fall and we're not gonna let you down you are our sleeper superhero you're a champion we were students together since the heavens my wife and your one my wife you and my wife were roommates at Southwestern for Evans we dated these two women and that's for Tennessee we dated them in Texas and West Texas and you behave yourself let the freshman thank you thank you you are our superhero you baptized me and that's enough to save the whole world thank you sir [Applause] should I be as prolific as that great pontificate above the Paula Jones but I would like to just show my appreciation as a young gospel preacher to a legend in his own time dr. Jack Evans senior I was first exposed to dr. heavens late 1996 through a series of video cassette tapes from the 1995 Crusade for Christ in Atlanta Georgia I got a hold of those tapes and I watched them over and over and over again until I memorized every sermon word-for-word then I got the preaching and I had to go to southwestern Christian College when I shared that with my father was also a gospel preacher he wanted me to stay in Indianapolis go to law school and he'll teach me the Bible that I needed to know I said no I need to go to southwestern Christian College and I'm so grateful that I stuck with that decision because dr. Harris has had a tremendous impact on my life my ministry and I just greatly appreciated that after the Crusade for Christ in Indianapolis in 1997 I took a 40 hour bus ride or 60 hour bus ride from Indianapolis to Los Angeles California to debate the Hebrew Israelites he inspired me to defend the gospel of Jesus Christ I didn't know what I know now but I I think I did pretty good back 97 but all of that is credited to dr. heavens and his ability to boldly stand and not only declare the gospel but defend the gospel of Jesus Christ and that still resonates with me when he and dr. Maxwell had the debate with the Hebrew Israelites I had to debate at the same time at the Sugarland Church of Christ with the Hebrew Israelites and it was a great day for truth but I credit that to dr. Evans and his stance for the gospel of Jesus Christ and him being set for the defense of the gospel and that is forever in me and I will continue to do so unto the Lord calls me home or he comes and takes the church back with him to glory so dr. Evans I love you I thank you sister Evans I love you I thank you so much for the impact that you have made in my life and my ministry god bless you [Applause] Amada to participate in the events today dr. Evans is a personality that I hold much to no single personality has had as great an influence on my adult life as dr. Jack Evans he has emptied himself in many men across this nation and I am one of such men he's known for his quick wit and his sharp mind but what you don't ever want is for that quick wit and sharp mind to be turned against you I traveled with the dr. Evans a lot 20 years prior to my coming to Houston and I was able to labor at the college and I traveled with dr. Evans quite a bit we were traveling from Dallas to Fort Lauderdale Florida and I was in my early 30s and I was proud to be taking care of dr. Evans and so we were on our way to the airport and I brother Evans was in the car with me and we were traveling going to love whew and he said Gerald you need to turn here I said dr. Evans I've got this he tells this story all the time well he got quiet and I thought that was the end of it we flew out to Fort Lauderdale Florida we stayed there for about four days and we were on our way back to the Miami Airport to try to head back to Dallas and I was driving the rental car but the evidence was sitting beside me and I said dr. Evans there do I need to take this one because he said you've got this dr. Evans I love you I am the man that I am today because of you and I'm grateful for that being able to travel with him throughout the years he's always had a great mind one of the things you always say it is that we see the masses of me and who come and go who find themselves in nameless graves while here and there some faithful soul forgets himself into eternity you are such a man [Applause] love Paul Peter and Gerald show them love the evidence have a couple of relatives in the audience and I want you to have the joy of seeing them and meeting them Donald ray Evans and Reginald Evans would you please stand his brothers his brother and brother god bless you god bless you it has been a full day and the days not over yet I know many of you have watched in if you like me you sin lord have mercy what what a great couple what a great man what a great woman and they certainly are they deserve our love Houston course is going to come just for a moment and give us a break but may I ask you may ask you before they come sometimes you really want to so love not with words but with action a number of churches have put monies together and we're going to present those monies shortly but perhaps you didn't have the opportunity perhaps you're sitting there and you're saying you know what I didn't realize the impact I didn't and I realized today that they're both retired and anything I give will go a long ways and so the Houston course is coming and maybe you want to scribble out a check maybe you want to grab a couple of those presidents if you scribble out a check it should be made to the fifth Ward Church of Christ but the Patterson where are you by the Patterson where are you he's in the lobby brother Patterson over to my right is brother Patterson but the Patterson will make sure that that cheque that is written to the fifth wall Church of Christ goes directly to the Evans if you don't mind writing that check it would give us an opportunity to at the end of the program to make an announcement about where we are with our contribution to the Evans family so again Houston course is coming show up some love would you [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'll tell you what [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I can't keep the backup [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] show him some love would you i sat there next to brother foster and I said to brother foster if I close my eyes I would say that Southwestern Christian college mr. Evans you you see what you did you blessed us you blessed us Beverly thank you listen Gary and I were products of fifth wall now Gary did not go to Southwestern Christian I know you wondered why am i running with these brothers but we were talking in a little bit and I told them that I were real proud to work with him both of them told me their brother foster you our Father in the gospel that's worth something in it now-now-now Church I had the responsibility of calling all of these church leaders and because we wanted to have a representative fund before we started now the brothers told me that not to read this number they saved because if you hear it you won't Gill right but I take I take a chance with you the number and thank you brothers eighteen thousand nine hundred and thirty five dollars that's what we already God we had set a figure of $6,000 but Houston would not let us down he gave us $18,000 and we would just only hope that what we're doing here can catch on in Dallas Los Angeles Atlanta Nashville and everybody will try to have an appreciation day but now what I want to ask you to do I really enjoyed this state I just about like when I was a little boy 11 years old and we would go to my uncle's house on Sunday afternoon and watch Roy Rogers yeah I know a whole lot of you've always had television but we didn't always have one and we would go down to mark with papas of coin and make some punch and do some cookies and we would have a good fellowship just a good fellowship and I went there that last day I remember I went and I got pushed up and I said told them I just got to go use it and the television was at such a good moment raaah Roger were chasing the criminals Pat was saved as the crumble they just about had and so I told him I cut to television all and hold it right here it's so good and I wouldn't use it as fast as I could and when I came back and cut it back on and it said be so this is going to have to hear it's been a good day if you didn't get a enjoyment out of this day I don't know what it would they amen now what I want to ask you to do I want to another at least two thousand dollars and so we went can round it off twenty thousand dollars we want them to say he got twenty thousand dollars of a love offering from Houston now my wife told me said I don't like to have you begging for money and I told us a baby the only reason I'm more big is because jack is my friend how big for him he's my friend so don't make me big but brother Patterson in this group they're gonna pass the basket and as the Basset come by you we we gave five dollars at the restaurant today and of you if you eat it I have half place you gonna have to give five or ten dollars and if you come here you are to Gill something yeah we're gonna do it here we're gonna do it y'all y'all give it and that money will be added to this money and the money that we have right now according bro Patterson gave me this eighteen thousand nine hundred thirty-five dollars and I wish I had that check so I could have them to take a picture of it and I go and tell my mama I gave the president eighteen thousand nine hundred and thirty five dollars a man somebody so it's the best that is of past please help us out make us proud make Houston proud I don't believe they can match us in Dallas I don't believe they can match us I don't believe it it much is Los Angeles brag but I don't even know whether they can match us alright alright very another southwestern product here it was a good giving song we reached the city other new tools are we gonna see see how they ran some seniors way to look at him are we gonna see seen hallelujah will we get you know we gonna rest we need back oh you know it's it got a lad well Saints will never die we're gonna cheat hallelujah hallelujah [Music] in that mighty chorus boys you will so sweetly are we gonna see sing hallelujah and by God will be our sadness pleasure there will never or we don't see [Music] what your when we get you don't we gonna rest be back - oh you know it's in the land where says we'll never die we're gonna see see yah yah and by military and Allah will be everlasting oh we don't see sing hallelujah [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] some some churches have mentioned to me that you didn't have time to send your money to brother Patterson you brought it today now what I want you to do is put it in one of the envelopes and sign your church name and put far Jack Evans celebration and you can go out in the hall and you can make sure that your money's given to brother Patterson or put it in the basket put it in a box you already got it you got it in a basket you brother's gonna go count it you're gonna bless it first okay you want to bless it we won't mean a blessing yes I'll be glad to blessing our most gracious Heavenly Father God sometimes you just step in in my life and you really sure how and this is one time that we got brothers here that we've been looking at cross-eyed and we we finally got an event that we could all come together and sit down like brothers and we want you to help us keep this going for us for me I pledge that unless the church will draw from somebody I'm not going to work drawn from it's going to be a church action and so maybe in the city of Houston we can learn how to get along a little better and instead of going by in un dues in a center of a church had a group drawn from them they're still in fellowship and let us act like brothers one foot another god bless us you know I needed this today I really needed this needed by I was almost gone but I needed this and I thank you for it in Jesus name thank you for the offering it's in Jesus name Amen Smith please come quickly and make your announcement please come on Smith [Laughter] y'all didn't see that before brother Holland comes and makes the closing remarks we have some food across the street that has been prepared we service six o'clock service starts at 6:00 but we don't want this food to go to waste so he's gonna make his remarks brother Washington's gonna cause ice out in prayer but watch if you bless the food we know you're gonna want to come down here and but everybody can't shake brother and sister EVER in hand at the same time and we don't want to wear them out but please fellowship across the street after our clothes please show the fifth Ward Church of Christ brother Gary Smith the elders please big big round of applause thank you thank you unbelievable brother Freddy Holland where are you brother Freddy Holland where are you brother Andrew Washington where are you god bless you for coming today please stay for the six o'clock service but the Jack Evans jr. is going to share in the message maybe we'll get a chance to hear brother Evans say thank you in his own words but again please stay for the six o'clock service god bless you pressures all as brother Scott you see it's gonna hide a we have enjoyed immensely the talks the speeches that everybody is seeing no matter how many adjectives we can use to describe the evidence it'll never be enough brother Jack Givens has dedicated his life and we worked closely we meaning the eldership at South Union in conjunction with dr. Jack Evans being overseers of the crusade for over a decade brother Evans has exemplified in his life and his teaching what a Christian ought to be we all have our faults none of us are perfect only person ever walked the face of this earth with Jesus Christ outside of that none of us are perfect but Jack reminds me to a certain degree a brother Wilton cook how many of you know it but that man tried his best to be perfect and I used to always tell him brother cook you gonna hurt yourself but he still did what he did and Jack was a similar person and brother Evans you have been an inspiration to all of us for the many years that you worked with the Crusade for Christ we the South Union elders and all of the staff crusade staff Dansby Harrison etc we would like to thank you for the things that you've done and sister image you've always been right there by her side and so we want to thank you too like most of you I could stand up here and talk but I don't want to hear the music so I'm gonna take my seat and sit down but without further ado we love you [Applause] thank you very much thank you very much I'm very appreciative my wife and I in the honoring that you're doing giving us here today and you remind me of something that one of my favorite preachers both the Ari and Hogan how many of you remember he said he you know it all this praise I'm getting he said he's just wondered and I wanted to he said I wonder how that does a bill of flapjacks here with all that syrup is poured over [Applause] that's a pancake kid I remember that so long ago because brother Hogan one of them favorite preachers I can tell you that now he used to preach in Houston how many of you remember brother are in Hogan that name the young people haven't perhaps but he and brother Jas Winston others have preached all around this country and they have actually lead in the founding of South Western Christian College and brother GP Bowser was the one who was really interested in Christian education and I mean not just a matter of Bible they tell me brother Bowser was a real scholar he wrote I think five languages GP Bowser how many of you heard that name Bowser they had this they had the bowels of Christian Institute at one time and a lot of our appreciation went to that school I didn't but been at Southwestern ridden for over 50 years here's one of my son oldest son and I have two others and then they have children so all my children I have them all all around me working and I'm thankful to God froggy and then the life and I have done a few years I was at her singing and my preaching now not singing as you think you see well it just be silent in the church will be silent from preaching but singing and to cover up some of these men so we have to learn how to rightly divide the word of truth you don't say let's really keep silence oh no no speak I know what God means by what he says when he's talking about women and their own and men in that road and if we all know the scripture ourselves we don't have any trouble there is neither Jew nor Greek bond nor free male nor female so we are all one in Christ Jesus so I thank you I just say thank you that's all I can say and what you're doing here today not only encourages me my family but this entire Brotherhood and it encourages young preachers to know that as they work faithfully and their lives are commensurate with what they say you know you can preach and kill your own preaching by the way you live you have to live the life preached the word would live the life now first of all in order to live the life and then preach the word and if they don't live the life then the word will not really help you any you may have somebody else so I'm so thankful I am so thankful just to be here to be honored in my own hometown and now I know I know how those flapjacks [Applause] that was great I got enough father we thank you for this this time that we were able to say some converse for the Evans and his wife and we thank you for the time that we can come together we thank you for the food that has been prepared we pray that you would he would nurse our bodies we thank you for the hands that prepared it we thank you for so many members brother Evans and he he even mentioned in the debate that he had read the whole Quran and he used the Quran to refute even what they said he have been a champion for the gospel Satan we enjoyed his tapes we enjoyed his books his name will be known among us for a long time and no doubt there are other mian like brother evidence his wife but it don't take long to call a road we thank you of them bless him now may they have safe travel even if they lead this place bless him in every way may the gifts that he received be a blessing it may you we remember that you're the ones who makes it possible for us to be what we are and he have shown in his life that he honor God and God has blessed him bless us now may be fellowship these few minutes enjoy what is prepared across the street and maybe we come back to worship at 6 o'clock love us in every way bless us forgive us about
