???? - Hi, brother. Okay, sir. "Welcome to Kampoeng Pelangi," the Rainbow Village here in Semarang, Indonesia. Now, this place, check it out, guys. This place right here used to be a rundown, dirty, dilapidated old slum. And now it's all painted with murals, and beautiful colours and all that. Check it out. It's beautiful, isn't it? This is what they've done to the place. So, some years back, the local high school principal had the idea of doing this. Painting all... There's hundreds, hundreds of homes here. Painting every single one of them with colourful murals, you know? And since then, it's become like a tourist destination. And some of the local houses have been able to set up businesses and sell food and suchlike, and improve their lives. So, I'm just gonna have a wander around this. It's kinda like the favelas in Brazil, where they're all kinda like built on a hill. It's like that. So I think there's gonna be a lot of climbing steps, and as you can see, they've put up signs. So we are here. You can see how big it is. I've just came in from the road there, I think. Eh, but this place is huge. And it's all built, as you can see, on some kinda steep hill. So, yeah, just gonna have a wander around. I don't know what direction or what... I'm just gonna have a wander around aimlessly. I don't have any, like, reason for being here other than checking it out. I probably will get something to eat at one of the local warungs, restaurants. I probably will buy some souvenirs if I see anything interesting. But, yeah, I think I'm the only person, the only tourist here. I was expecting this to be like a, you know, a place that's kinda mobbed with tourists. I heard that people come here and take Instagram photos against some of the murals, and suchlike. But, looks like this section here is kinda been set up as some businesses and suchlike. Some shops. Or maybe this is just somebody's home. I think this is actually just somebody's garden that I'm walking through. There's signs, but, I dunno. I dunno what any of that means, so I'm just, as I say, wandering around aimlessly in this Rainbow Village. And you can see, some of the paint is starting to fade a little bit on some of the buildings. I dunno how long ago it was that they painted this. I think, like, six or seven years. Good morning. Or good afternoon. Siang, selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) There's a huge sign there. It's so big that I can't even see it, guys. Or maybe that's a viewpoint. Let's get ourselves up there and have a look. Oh, there we go. Look, there's this massive sign here. "Kampoeng Pelangi." Rainbow Village, in English. Amazing. Amazing what they've done here. I was kinda expecting this to have more kinda eateries and shops and such like that. Maybe there's a section for it. Obviously, most of the people here are just living their normal lives And their homes, they're something like... I don't even know. There's like 300. Probably, like 300 homes in this village. And as you can see, people just doing their washing and suchlike. It is a Sunday, Sunday afternoon. I dunno if some of these, like, small businesses, close on a Sunday. I was expecting this place, as I said, to be mobbed with tourists. But, yeah. Sometimes I don't even know, like is that somebody's house, or is it a wee cafe? Like that, you know? I just see, like, some cups and some plates and stuff. Is that somewhere yer man can sit down and get some nasi goreng, or will I just be walking into somebody's front yard? That isn't even a business. I dunno. Okay, more exploring, aimlessly. This guy has chickens in these wee cages. Ah, so they're all numbered. It's 107, so there's at least 107 homes. What has he got here? Oh, yeah, they're wee, wee chickens. Or wee birds. I dunno, what are they? I think they're baby chickens. Adolescent chickens. Right. Can I get down this way? There's a big old rooster here. Yeah, like, you see, this building here with the wings. So when I was looking up this place on Google Maps, there was people in front of that, taking photos and suchlike. That's, like, somebody's actual house right there. That's their wee garden and their wee rooster, right there. Oh, that's nice. They've got the Little Mermaid. But this is somebody's actual house, and people will just come against their front wall and take Instagram shots, which I guess they don't mind, for some reason. I dunno if they're even benefiting from this tourism. There's obviously no entrance fee to come into the village, you just walk in, so... Some of these houses, I dunno how they're benefiting. Just the ones that have shops selling souvenirs for tourists and stuff. Eh, having wee restaurants, I can see how they benefit. But, yeah, I'm not seeing too many of them, right here. Yeah, just seem to be walking in people's gardens. Ah, here. I think that's a shop. Or it might just be a... No, I think it's actually someone's washing, just drying. Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Siang. (Afternoon.) Oh, there's a graveyard here, right at the very top. They have a, a graveyard, I guess, for people in this village. Don't think they call it a "slum" these days. It definitely was a slum in the past before all that painting and stuff. But I think these days it's a village, that it's know as. This big graveyard, right up here. Hey, guys! Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Yeah, okay. - Yes. Apa kabar? (How are you?) Eh, baik. (Fine.) Baik? Okay, good. Baik. (Fine.) Ah, okay. Mau kemana? I was almost speaking Thai there. I'm getting confused with different languages. I was about to say like "Mai ow." "I don't want" in Thai language. But, yeah, that's my chicken there. It's getting... It's been cooked. You can see the meat is white. And then it gets fried again when I order it. Okay. Bye-bye. Bye. - Bye. Okay, so I'm on my own now. It's taking a while to cook. Hello, how are you? Looks like my ayam goreng is nearly ready. And they have the heads right there. I don't know if there'd be much meat on that. Or how you would even eat it. It's okay? Okay, good. Yeah, I want to eat it here. She was packaging up for me, but, I've nowhere else to eat it. I don't know... I would like to move because it's very hot here, but I don't know where else I would sit and eat this. At least this is shaded from the midday sun. ????. - Oh, you're giving me it with rice? Huh? - Ah. Okay. - Ayam, no? ????. Yeah. - Ayam ????. I think I'm getting it with rice. I didn't really need the rice. It's just gonna make me full. This is, this is fine. This, okay. (fried chicken.) Oh, as soon as the food came, this cat came. It's asking... Ohhh, good. This for washing my hands. Yeah. - Okay, that's good. Yeah. When you're in the village and you get food, sometimes a cat just appears out of nowhere, after some of your scran. Okay. Give the hands a wee wash. - Okay. Okay, you'll get my leftovers. Never, never mind. It's sitting right underneath me, squeaking. Okay, let's try this gorengan first. Yeah. Yeah, it's like a, a big fritter. It feels soft, but it feels crispy on the outside. Oh, yeah. Mmmh. Yeah, it's good. Mmmh. Yeah, it's tempeh, it's tempeh that's in the middle. Tofu. Yeah. - Tempeh. - Yes, tempeh! So it's like a mush, a mush, a mash of tofu that's been battered and deep-fried. It's lovely. Mmmh. What? What? Kucing mau makan makanan saya. (The cat wants to eat my food.) Yeah. - Yeah. The cat wants to eat my food. Don't you? Don't you want to eat my food? Yeah, you'll get my leftovers, don't worry . Don't worry. Mmh. The gorengan is lovely. Minum? (Drink?) Minum? - Minum? Minum? - Ah, yeah. Punya (have) teh manis? (sweet tea?) - Es teh? (Iced tea?) Es teh. - Yeah. - Teh manis, dingin? (Sweet tea, cold?) Okay. - Dingin? (Cold?) Teh manis, dingin? - Dingin. Yeah, - Yeah, teh manis, dingin. A cold, iced tea. Okay. Okay. Fried chicken. Oh. It's so hot. It just came out of the fryer. Oh! Ohhh! - Oh. Oh, panas. Panas, panas. (Hot.) - Panas, panas. Mmh. That's good. As you would imagine, it's being cooked quite... Okay, I'll give him a bit. But cats don't normally like food that's hot. They normally like food that's cold, so... Here, boy, or girl. Okay. I gave him a bit and he shut up. So that's good. That's the way to keep them quiet. Now I can eat the rest of it myself. Mmh. Wow, you ate that quickly. Okay, I think that's enough. I've got most of the meat of this. Come this way, come this way. Es teh. Oh, thank you. Oh, the cat's just grabbed it. It grabbed it with one paw and then took it off me. That should keep him occupied while I enjoy the rest of it by myself. ???? - Okay. I don't understand. ???? Eh, saya tidak mengerti. (I don't understand) So, the flavour's nice. There's just, like, a light marinade that's on it. And it's been seasoned as well. I can taste, it's very salty. But, yeah, it's not been... It's not overloaded with sauce or, marinated or anything like that. It's just, you're tasting the oil and the chicken, which is lovely. Good? - Yeah, good. Yeah, tasty. - Spicy? Yeah, not spicy, 'cause I don't eat the sambal. - Not spicy? Oh. - Yeah. Just ate the chicken. It was lovely. Ahhh, good. Feeling satisfied. Yes. - And so is the cat. Oh, there's two cats now. This one's scared. I gave it all 3 bones. Come, take. Take the bone. This one's guarding it, I think. I think that's the boss for the chicken. Ini, ini. (This.) Oh, she giving me this to wipe myself down. - Yeah. Okay, thank you. Yeah, all, all sweaty, that's good. What's your channel YouTube? Dale. Tale, T? - Dale. Dale Philip. D, D? for dangerous. D - D? D-A - D? D-A-L - D? D-A-L-E. - D? Okay, you have hand phone? - One minute. You can subscribe. - Yes! Good. Get a new subscriber as well. So we've got 3 pieces of chicken, one piece of gorengan, one iced tea and one new subscriber. Fantastic. You clicked subscribe? Yes. - Okay, sudah? (Already?) Okay. Thank you, bro. Thank you. Where you from, Mr.? - Eh, dari Skotlandia. Ohhh. - Yeah. Far away. - Skotlandia? A long... - Sir Alex Ferguson. Alex Ferguson, yes. - Ohhh. He asked where I'm from. - Yes. The first Scotsman he knows is Sir Alex Ferguson. - Sir Alex Ferguson. Yes. - Good, a good man. Good. - Yeah. Okay, see you, brother. See you. He just came to buy an absolute load, a whole bagful. Thank you, thank you. - See you. Yeah, see you. - Okay. Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United fan, just bought an absolutely huge bunch of tempeh. - Yeah, Manchester United. Yes. Manchester United, yes. - Another Manchester United fan? Okay. Not good. Okay. - Not good. Not good? Ah, okay, he's a Newcastle fan. - Yes. He says he's a Newcastle United fan. ????. Okay, eh, this, berapa harganya? (How much does it cost?) Dua lima. (25.) Dua lima? Oh, 25,000. - Dua puluh lima. 25,000, okay. 25, okay. Less than 2 bucks. It's good. Okay. - ????. You can keep. No need change. For your, gift. Okay? - ????. Thank you. - Okay. Thank you, good sir. - No problem. See you next time, okay? - Thank you. Yeah. Goodbye. - Makasi. (Thanks.) - Success! Makasi. - Yeah, success! Success in Jakarta. - Semangat. Semangat, spirit. Okay, see you, guys. ????. - Okay. See you. - What's your new location? Eh, next location, I will go to Jakarta. Go to Jakarta? - Yes. Yes. I'm subscribed to you. You will subscribe me? Thank you. Yes. - Fantastic. We got some nice food, some nice drink, and a new subscriber. That's always a success when we visit a wee eaterie, isn't it? Okay, so I'm back in this graveyard area here, just aimlessly wandering around like I was before I found the... So I've been that way. Maybe I'll take a walk around this way. This place is huge. Like I said, I think there's, like, at least 300 homes, and every single one of them is painted in colours. Oh, that one, it looks like it's probably a new wall or a new building or something, that hasn't been painted yet, but Oh, and that one hasn't, either. That one's like the odd one out. But basically 99% of the buildings are, you know, with colour. Ah, he has pigeons. Hey, ini. (Here.) What? Oh, you have pigeons. Ah, okay. So they keep pigeons as pets. That's good. I like... - ????. Ah. - ????. For you, for you? Your pigeon? You? Ah, okay. I'm trynna ask him if it's his, his pigeon. - Yeah. ????. Okay, good. Okay, good. So there's a mosque there. I don't know what he said. You guys can tell me. Bye! - If you speak Indonesian. Okay, bye-bye. Bye-bye. - Oh, okay. I was gonna... He's giving the middle fingers there. ????. - Yeah. He just said, "F off." I was gonna say, you guys who speak Indonesian can tell me if he was being cheeky or not, but now I know. Like, that's universal. ????! - The... What's that? No good. Tidak baik, tidak baik. Okay. Yeah, it's universal, so everyone knows that is rude. Okay, so this guy has a house that he's also turned into a shop right here and I asked him for a cold drink. What has he got? Eh... - ????. "Tea with flowers." Ah. "Rasa dan aroma." ("Taste and aroma.") Ah, okay. So it's tea with flowers. Ah, okay. This, berapa harganya? (How much does it cost?) Empat ribu. (4,000.) 4,000, okay. Let me see what I've got. Okay. No need change. You can keep, okay? Oh. - Thank you, brother. Thank you. Okay. - Hello. Let's demolish this. That chicken was a bit salty. So, very thirsty. Also, I've worked up a thirst, sweating my way up to the top of this village. That is nice. Bit of a flowery, flowery tea. Yeah, a lot of them have turned their home, basically into a wee shop. I seen that a lot in Nepal. In Nepal it was like that. Also seen it in random places in Sumatra, when I was taking the bike around. You would see people just... They're entrepreneurial. They would just have the idea, they're in the home all day, probably the wife looking after the kids and stuff, might as turn the front of the house into a wee shop and make a wee bit of extra "dough." So I've got a camera in one hand and the bottle in the other, so I can't hold onto this guardrail. Hello. Halo. - Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Selamat siang. - Okay, good. I'm just kinda wandering around. The locals don't seem to mind that you're wandering around. 'Cause, like I said, this is very much on the, the tourist map. But the whole time that I've been here, I haven't seen any other tourists at all. I really expected this would be, you know, people taking Instagram photos against the, the murals and stuff like that. That's what I had read, I had read about. Oh. Ah, so there's more of this. It looks like it's some kinda traditional performance or something like that. They've got these masks. Hi. - Hello. Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Hello, selamat siang. - Ah, okay. Yeah. - This for what? This is, eh... ????. - ????. ????? - ????. Ah, this for religion, or no? No. - Traditional. No, no. - Tradition? Traditional. - Traditional? Ah. - Traditional. For your tribe? Ah, okay, it's traditional. Hi. Oh, hi again. Hello. It's the guy who took me to the warung. Okay, good. Ah, okay. - Traditional ????. ????, tradition. Yeah, it's traditional. Ah, okay. So they practice, practice? Just practice. - Just practice today. Ah, okay. So they're practicing, like the music and everything, and then there will probably be some performance, eh, somewhere. Okay. Nice to see you guys. Nice to see you. Okay. Have a nice day. Hello. - Okay. Hi. - Hi, bro. How are you? Okay, that's nice. Yeah, really friendly people. I think if you're the type of tourist who doesn't really mingle with the locals that much, this would be a good place to start because, you know, with it being on the tourist map... Oh, Winnie the Pooh there. It's... You know they're expecting random tourists to be coming here, so you're never gonna be like, unwelcome. Whereas other places it's, you know, there is a chance that if you're just walking through people's gardens and stuff, they're gonna be annoyed. Look at this, they've got some anime character and Sonic the Hedgehog. I'm a big fan of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic, Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog. Okay. Further wandering around. ???? makan chicken? Chicken? Yeah, good. Yeah, chicken. Eh, sudah, sudah makan. I eat already. Enak, sangat enak. (Delicious, very tasty.) Yeah, good. Berapa harganya? (How much did it cost?) Berapa harganya? Eh, dua puluh lima ribu, (25,000,) for chicken, gorengan (fritter) and teh manis, dingin. (cold, sweet tea.) - Mister, mau kemana? (where are you going?) Mister, mau kemana? (where are you going?) - Good? Ah, good. Okay. Mister, mau kemana? (where are you going?) Huh? - Mau kemana? (Where are you going?) Magumana? ????, mau kemana? ????? (???? where are you going? ?????) Toju magumana? - Mau kemana? (Where are you going?) Yeah. Saya tidak mengerti. (I don't understand.) Mau kemana? (Where are you going?) Mau... I want go where? Eh, saya akan (I will) jalan-jalan (visit) di Pelangi. - Yeah, jalan-jalan di mana? (Visit where?) Pelangi? Eh, jalan-jalan. Eh, just, eh, look, look. Walk and look. Walk and look. Jalan, - ????. Jalan di... (walk around in) Jalan dan nonton. (Walk and look.) ????. - Jalan dan nonton. (Walk and look.) Minum apa? Minum apa? (What drink?) Minum "Ichi Ocha, Teh Manis." Dengan flower. (With.) Yeah. - Yeah. Enak. (Nice.) Yeah, enak. Okay. Okay, guys. I will walk around. See you guys. See you. Yes. - Bye-bye. Bye-bye. - Okay. - Bye-bye. That's nice. Had a wee conversation. Basically used all my words. Basically used all my words. x2 Eh, I'm coming towards the end of my Indonesia trip, so yeah, that's probably the best I'm gonna do for this trip. But when I come back another time, I will try to learn more of the language before coming here, and be able to have deeper conversations. Right. I think I'm on the other side. So I came up the hill, and then I'm on the other side of this hill right here. Ah, that's Luffy from One Piece. King of the Pirates, right there. Very nice. Ah, so this side, it just seems to be more of the graveyard. It's huge. It seems that this side of the hill is the graveyard, and than that side of the hill is, the houses. Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Selamat siaaang. - Selamat siang. Oh, okay. Siaaang. Okay. Yeah. Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Siang. (Afternoon.) - Siang. Okay. Playing badminton? Yeah. - Yeah. - Good. It's a good game. Yeah, yeah. Dari mana? (From where?) Sa... Eh, saya dari Skotlandia. Huh? - Eh? Saya dari Skotlandia. Eh... - You, mau kemana? (where are you going?) Eh, where am I going? I don't know. Just jalan-jalan. (Visiting.) Jalan-jalan? - Yeah. Eh, this Pelangi, no? ???? di sana. (???? there.) Pelangi finished? Ah, okay. I've come out? I passed the graveyard and then I'm in somewhere else. Some other kinda town, right here. Looks like... Oh, this is probably where they're gonna do the performance for the traditional. ????. - Ah, traditional? Traditional dancing? Yeah, dancing. - Ah, sanasana, lanjut lanjut. (there, carry on.) Ah, okay. - ????. I don't know. - ????. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. - Gak bisa Bahasa Inggris. (Can't speak English.) Gak bisa Bahasa Inggris.? (Can't speak English?) Like, yeah. Hi, guys. Selamat siang, selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) - Yes, okay. Okay. - Yeah. - Okay. - Selamat siang. I'm in just some other village now, that I didn't intend to come to, but why not just have a wander around here as well? Oh, that stuff's good. I had that in... Where did I have that? Oh, yeah, in Toraja. The Pop Ice. It was yum. And I've passed through that village, and there's still more and more graves right here. This is a huge, huge cemetery. And recent graves as well. That one from 2020. So, yeah, this definitely can't be just for the local village. That Pelangi village. It's too big for that. I think there's like 300 houses in that village, and there's literally thousands of graves. As you can see here, somebody died in "1977," and then somebody beside them, "2003" and "1995." I'm gonna assume that this is a family that they've put together, you know? They all look the same. I assume that's what's happened there. They tend to do that, tend to bury family members next to each other. Right, I'm gonna head back through the Rainbow Village and make my way down the hill from there. Bye-bye, guys. Bye-bye, guys. - Bye-bye. Saya akan pergi Pelangi (I'm going to Pelangi.) Kampoeng Pelangi. Sana. (There.) - Okay, bye-bye. See you. - Okay, yeah. Okay. Okaaay! So they all bring their bikes, they all bring their bikes up here. I can barely walk. Guys, it's all slippy and stuff. I can barely walk up here, and there's guys just, vrrrrrrrrr, riding their bikes. Wow. Popeye there. And Tom and Jerry. Wonderful. Tom and Jerry right there. Hi! Hi, how are you? ????. - Good. Apa kabar? (How are you?) Kabar? - Kabar baik? (You're good?) Baik. (Fine.) - Baik. Baik? Okay, good. How do I get down? Saya akan pergi (I will go) down. Mau pulang? (Want to go home?) This way, this way, this way? Sini. (Here.) Oh, this way? Oh, okay. Thank you. I'm trying to find my way back down. Oh, there is the map. I think this is where I came in. I remember seeing a map when I came in. Yeah. Oh, this is a different map. Ah, this is showing you different routes to get around. Look, there's like a long track, a medium and a short track, just like it was a trek out in the wilderness. They've kinda gave you, like, a route. So I think I've been... I've definitely been all up here. This is the graveyards and stuff. I think I've been around the top bits there. I just haven't been in this part. So that would be down and this way. Look how sweaty I am, guys. It is so hot right now. It's like 36 degrees. It's the middle of the afternoon. I would have liked to... Well, either done this first thing in the morning or, you know, like an hour before sunset or something. The problem is, as you can see by the sky, it's very cloudy, very white. Ehm, everyday it tends to rain heavily in the afternoon. And this is my last day in Semarang. I was here yesterday and it just rained the whole afternoon, when I was planning on doing stuff. So, eh, yeah, I just had to take the opportunity while it was dry, and it's the afternoon, to come out here, even though it's absolutely sweltering, guys, sweltering. I wouldn't mind actually a, a downpour. - Hello. Hello, how are you? Apa kabar? (How are you?) Baik. (Fine.) - Baik? Okay, good. Oh, looks like a... Is it one of the old presidents or something? I dunno. Hi. - Hi. Okay. Ehm, yeah, I wouldn't mind a, a downpour of rain right now. It would refresh me, actually. So, it looks like this has been repainted or something, or they're starting a new one. Yeah. So, it has to be like an ongoing process, I guess. Obviously there's development within the community. People build houses and such like that. Then they have to get the murals going. Like, maybe that's new. Look, that door looks new, so this building's probably new. So it looks like they've just started. That's the beginnings of a, a mural, and then other ones, they fade away like this, you know? That's the well. The village well right there. It looks like the... Probably 'cause there's so much water's come in and out of that, and been dripped down it. It's faded the paint. So things like that. They have to, maybe every few years they have to repaint them, you know? So it's a constant ongoing process to keep this village beautiful. And this is very different to what I expected, guys. Like, I had read online, this was like a huge tourist area and I expect it to be like a tourist trap, you know? Where it's just all the shops are just selling souvenirs. Something like those Clan Jetties in Penang, in Malaysia, where you go and it's not really people just living their normal lives. It's just a bunch of shops selling tat for the tourists. I thought it was gonna be like that, and that's how people were improving their lives by, you know, turning their homes into businesses and suchlike. Right, which way do I go in this person's garden? Eh... Hello. Selamat siang. (Good afternoon.) Okay. Can go this way? Yeah. - Okay. Thank you. Okay, I guess I can get through this way. Yeah, I expected that that's what was going on. But, yeah, I don't see that. I don't see how the local residents are benefiting from this, other than, it's making their place look beautiful, you know? It's making it look a lot nicer than it would otherwise be. This was probably like one of the dirtiest, dingiest slums in the city, before this project happened. So, yeah, I dunno. I can only speculate because what I read online isn't true. So, that tells you, you know, sometimes you have to go somewhere for yourself, to see it yourself, to know what's really going on. But yeah, all the bloggers and stuff like that, if you type this village, "Kampoeng Pelangi" into Google, you'll see all these bloggers telling you that, you know, they're all selling souvenirs. They've all turned their shops in... They've all turned their houses into restaurants and such like. It's not the case, as far as I can see anyway. And I've explored most of it already. So, yeah, I don't know how they, how they're benefiting from it. Maybe... Is that the Tasmanian Devil? Ha ha. Cool. Maybe... A panda there. Maybe, they get some kinda grant from the... You're noisy. They get some kinda grant from the city or the local government or something for, you know, putting Semarang on the tourist map and putting up with all the tourists that... Well, there's not really... I'm the only tourist. But, putting up with just random people now and again coming through their, their front garden and, you know, disturbing their peace and privacy. Okay, guys, that concludes the tour of this Rainbow Village, right here. Some of the locals fishing there. Maybe that fish that the lady was trying to sell me came from there. Probably it did. I would imagine it did. But, yeah, this concludes the tour of the Rainbow Village, and I will see you on the next vlog.
