A Game's engine is a framework that developers use as a starting base or a foundation of a game it typically includes many basic features required for a game to be made and some engines are specifically made to create a certain type or genre of game for a visual example imagine this building is a video game and underneath the building you have its foundation the building is built on top of this foundation and without the foundation it obviously can't be there now being underneath the building is very difficult to make changes the foundation not impossible but difficult so if there's issues with the foundation it can be difficult to overcome them space engineers is engine or Foundation is called B Rage 2 Keen softwarehouse the developers of space engineers have been using this engine for nearly 10 years to build the game and in that time the scope of the game has changed a lot an easy example to show this is that space engineers didn't used to have planets and we were told that they were never going to be added to the game and here they are this is a very big example of how the scope of space engineers has changed but is also one of many examples of how the game has changed from its original design during its near 10-year development the developers have said themselves that v-rays 2 has a lot of bottlenecks with it that make it difficult to add features they want to space engineers so around a year ago they began investigating different engines to see if one was better suited to the games they wanted to create now they couldn't find one that suited their specific requirements so instead they decided to develop their own V Rage 3 V Race 3 will be a complete rewrite of the previous Engine v-rays 2 with very little of the code being kept now the development of V Rage 3 doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be getting another space engineers and even if we do it definitely won't be anytime soon but during this video I'll explain why I believe Space Engineers 2 is coming eventually but first what changes has v-ray history going to bring and why should you be excited for them as I previously said Space Engineers was not initially going to have planets and this is where one of the limitations of the engine comes in as the engine was originally only designed to support asteroids a planet can only really be a bigger asteroid and when designing a new engine from scratch and this time you know that you're going to have planets in it you can design that engine with planetary features in mind or something like that anyway water now water obviously can be added to space engineers currently there is a water mod that does this but the water mod adds a static layer of water around the planet yes it has waves and whatever but effectively it's a static layer appears at a certain height you can even set the height raising it higher and lower and whilst impressive especially for a mod it's a very basic simulation of what water is the water that will be added in vrage 3 will be volumetric which means that this water will have volume and weight and will react when players interact with it so you can displace the Water by pushing a ship into it you can Dam off the water preventing it from flowing you'll be able to pick up the water with a ship and move it around and basically it'll be very similar to how water functions in real life now there was a lengthy live stream where they showed off how this would work but mainly showing 2D examples but they did show a couple of 3D examples so if you're more interested in this I suggest you watch the live stream but just know that your dreams of having realistic water in a video game might not be as far off as you think in very simple terms voxels are what planets and asteroids are made up of in Space Engineers now whilst I'm sure you're very interested in the many ways voxels have improved within the new engine what you're probably more interested in is how it looks when you crash your ship as you can see from the examples on screen voxel deformation has been improved massively currently within Space Engineers if you crash a ship one of two things happens either one you'll ship entirely disintegrates and you're left with very little damage to the ground or number two your ship entirely disintegrates and you get more damage to the ground but the damage doesn't really seem to fit the shape of your ship it's really difficult to get really good looking crashes in the game and obviously this is something that will be improved in the new engine so basically how it works in very simple terms is that it pre-calculates the trajectory of your ship and where it's going to hit and it calculates the damage it would be caused when you make that impact and because of its pre-calculation it generates a much more satisfying looking crash one of the things they've also shown is that there'll be different tolerances for different materials so here we have stone where the ship kind of skims along the surface and doesn't do as much damage then we hear we also have sand when it hits the sand you can see it goes right into the surface of this planet doing a lot more damage so not only will your crashes look more realistic depending on where you crash you'll also get different types of crashes now speaking of things with different tolerances if you've managed to tolerate this video so far maybe you should consider liking it and subscribing to this channel to see more videos like this one as you can probably imagine b-race 3 will have massively improved lighting and shadows compared to the current engine which are many different examples of this and you can see in most of them the Shadows created are much clearer and more defined and they look much more realistic than before I've been cycling through many examples of this with the old engine on the left and V Rage 3 on the right just so you can compare and hopefully you'll be able to see what a massive difference the new engine makes one of the things to bring up actually and this is quite a big thing is that in the new engine there's no longer any light bleed so if you don't know what light bleed is if you build a box in Space Engineers look towards the sun you'll see in the corners you'll get little bits of light shining through despite the fact this is a completely sealed box and in V Rage 3 this is no longer the case as the simulation of light and shadows in the game is much better physics appears to be a major focus of the new engine in the background you can see lots of experiments with lots of different physics engines that they were performing to see which of these is best for their new engine one of the big things they wanted to eliminate in the new engine is the Phantom Forces now you probably know Phantom Forces by its more popular name flang yes I know clang acolytes they're finally going to get rid of him but don't worry clang will always exist within our hearts with removal of Phantom Forces and better General overall physics will no longer get these weird issues where your ship will get flung off into space by Space Magic no longer will you get people building stupid ships propelled by thoughts and prayers I wonder who could be giving them those ideas and additionally with better and more stable physics the use of subgrids should be much more stable as you can see here they did lots of experiments with different physics engines and eventually settled on using the updated Havoc physics for a couple of reasons shown here one of which I'm going to zoom in on and then quickly move on to the next section it looks like blocks are going to be overhauled in multiple different ways one of the big things that they showed off is block fracturing currently in Space Engineers if a large block gets damaged it starts to smoke and then eventually is completely destroyed in this when a block is damaged bits of it will get knocked off of it it'll get disassembled in lots of different pieces and eventually then it will be destroyed but in the meantime you actually get proper damage to that block now we've seen Nvidia 3 that armor blocks will still deform so they'll kind of get bent like they do in the current game but this will be a massive overhaul for all functional blocks in the game imagine how cool it's going to look when your weapons actually get blown off your ship and bits of them go flying everywhere and when you see the wreckage of a ship you see damage refineries that actually got the tops of them completely blown off and you can find bits of them lying around another thing that's been mentioned is that grid sizes will be changing or more specifically there will only be one grid size if you've watched videos on my channel before you know this is something I've been a big advocate for as I don't really see any reason why there needs to be large grid and small Grid in the game now under this unified grid size there will be blocks ranging from the size of 0.25 meters to to 2.5 meters now 2.5 meters is the current size of a large grid block however 0.25 meters is half the size of a small grip block so will have blocks even smaller than the smallest blocks in the game but the largest blocks will still be the same size another change coming to blocks in Beaver H3 is that they'll have decal layers on each of their faces now they haven't said what this is specifically but this sounds like to me that if there is a decal layer on each of the faces of the block that you can change what's on each of the faces of the block I.E paint each of the different pieces of the block and have different textures on each of the faces of the block obviously this is just conjecture we don't know if this is actually going to be the case but I'm not sure what else you'd use decal layers for if I'm honest I think it's quite obvious to say that performance will be much better in this new engine as the old engine is 10 years old and technology and probably keen's programmers have come a long way since then so they'll be able to create a much better engine for the exact scope of whatever they want to do now as opposed to what they were doing 10 years ago and we've also had 10 years worth of technological development since then as well so imagine that will also improve the overall performance of this engine as well now one of the big things I want to highlight here as well is that they've said that large-scale multiplayer is one of the main goals of this new engine but with that improving performance will be imperative make that happen now I know that large-scale multiplayer is something that a lot of people want I see a lot of people talking about in the comments on a lot of my videos but I think we should preemptively temper our expectations when they're saying large-scale multiplayer they probably mean 50 to 100 players not the thousands that all of you in the comment section keep going on about the technology isn't quite there to have a thousand people in the same instance of a game with the level of detail Space Engineers has but even so having 50 people in a stable multiplayer game with the scale and detail of space this would be awesome so I'm glad this is a focus of fear H3 so as far as I can see they've shown off very little about this but one of the biggest features coming to B Rage 3 is its own dedicated modding tools So currently modding in Space Engineers require several different applications to do everything you need something for modeling you need something for sound you need something different for coding Etc but the new V Rage 3 engine is going to have an all-in-one editor for modding we've already seen that there's a couple of features that aren't modelable in Space Engineers that will be moddable in this new editor as well so not only will modding be easier in this new engine in theory the mods created for it should be even better than they were before so in the title of this video is the words Space Engineers too like I said earlier nothing is confirmed that the new game will be created with this engine however let's go back to our analogy earlier the building on the left represents the currently released version of space engineers and below it is its foundation called B rage 2. on the right is the New Foundation that Keena building called bh3 the New Foundation is very different to the older foundation in many different ways for starters it's very difficult to replace the foundation of a building especially as vrage3 is a complete rewrite of v-race 2. even if we were able to replace this entire foundation of the building the New Foundation is completely different to the old one so you'd probably have to restructure the majority of the building in order to do so at that point you might as well knock the building down and start again like I said the engine has been entirely Rewritten from B Rage 2 so anything that is created for the V Rage 3 engine will probably have to be entirely Rewritten as well another example of this is block fracturing as blocks can fracture now would likely need new models for these blocks that can support fracturing as you saw on the example earlier all the little different bits that fell out of the block the new models would have to be built with those little bits that fall off in mind another example as well is the fact that the grid sizes are going to emerge into one grid size which means anything built using the old game probably won't be transferable into anything using the new engine and that's just a few examples of why I don't think this engine will be added onto the old game and if they're putting that much work into the new engine to overcome a lot of the issues with the old engine I imagine they're probably more than likely going to use the engine to build a new game with now they have said that V Race 3 is at least two to three years of completion at this time and I imagine that also doesn't account for a new game as well so we have two to three years of this current engine big developed then however long it takes to make the game afterwards we also know that the PlayStation version of the game will be released at some point this year so I imagine they probably want to wait a few years before releasing a sequel to space engineers after the PlayStation version releases now if I were a betting man I would suggest that they would make a different more experimental game with the new engine first something akin to many evil Engineers just to experiment and show off the new features of vrage 3 and then after that they'd probably think about creating a new space engineers game so even then Space Engineers 2 is probably at least another five years off if you want to follow the development of video X3 in the description I will leave a link for the tech lead at King softwarehouse who is the main source for all of this information about the V Race 3 engine so if you want to see what's coming I'd suggest you follow that account and with that which of the features of view Race 3 are you most excited for let me know with a comment below and as always like And subscribe for more space engineers content
