this video is sponsored by squarespace the best animated movie i've seen in 2020 isn't from disney pixar or dreamworks it was made by one guy on his home computer over the course of 13 years check it out been on an animation kick recently and i got an email from this guy cody vibhart 13 year animation project this guy's been working on an animated movie since like 2006 or thereabouts he used this 3d program for your home computer called poser which is a very old school piece of software i remember using it in middle school i think for a class project it is ridiculous to me to think that there is a guy that was out there trying to make a feature film with it well guess what he finished the movie [Laughter] it's called the exigency he released it on amazon prime a while ago and predictably i mean it got basically no attention what do you expect you take a look at it and it looks like one of those late 90s 3d tv shows i mean it looks like a joke right if you saw this on netflix you would laugh for a second at how bad it looks and then just scroll right past it i know that for sure because that is like essentially what i did with the email they sent me this email back in may world's changed a bit since the pandemic there are basically no theaters open no new movies are coming out so this thing popped back into my head and i thought all right i'll check this out it's like two hours long which is usually the sign that it's gonna be a disaster but i figured all right let me give this the benefit of the doubt i mean he spent 13 years on it the least i could do is just take a look at it so yesterday i watched it it's pretty good honestly bear with me on this i was not expecting to enjoy it as much as i did so here's the trailer for it critics agree the animation is dire this film looks like cancer exigency i love it i love it i love this guy's attitude this is a guy he doesn't take himself too seriously he is not one of those like pretentious film student thinks they're the next orson welles he knows it looks goofy he knows people are gonna think that it's laughable and yet and yet it is an oddly endearing film let's talk about it so the movie starts out following this guy named kyle to work goes into his office run of the mill monday morning gets called upstairs to see the big boss finds out he's about to receive this big promotion and yes yes i know it looks like hot garbage you get used to it the second you stop thinking about the aesthetic you start warming up to it little oddball slapstick moments just work with the style mr burton it's good to see you what so while he's at the office a bunch of aliens show up and attack the planet i know i know just roll with it before you know it a huge action sequence pops off and it's great it really is it's miles ahead of something that you would expect from an amateur filmmaker each beat of the sequence is incredibly intricate it has humor peppered throughout the music is great and after like four minutes you find yourself like oddly invested in seeing whether or not this guy can escape the mayhem i'm not gonna lie i'm actually kind of enjoying this before long he's reunited with his family and we find out that kyle's real name is actually ander he's a retired space marine from another planet and his old enemies they've tracked him down to earth and their plan is kill him and then invade his home planet of galicia why that name has stuck with me since watching it i have no idea so kyle or ander or whatever the problem is he's got a wife and kids on earth they're pretty fleshed out as far as side characters go the wife has some really great moments the kids they act as comic relief but not in an annoying way the sun really stands out between the two with the exception of one awkward scene toward the end of the movie he is basically the only thing making this a pg-13 flick he drops a couple colorful words he has a term on his t-shirt i don't feel like getting demonetized over so the family has no clue about kyle's past they think he's just your regular joe schmo but after they learn the truth they all eventually board a spaceship together and head to galicia kyle assures his wife during the trip that he has put his fighting days behind him he's not interested in returning to his home planet's war effort but he has to return to galicia to tell the planet's king face to face we meet the ship's crew take note of captain casey neistat he's my favorite character in the entire thing we get heavy exposition mixed in with some light humor the writing is actually pretty good the movie's first act moves along at a steady clip the pacing is way better than most independent films that you watch i didn't get bored i had originally planned on watching this movie in double speed if it started to drag at any point but that honestly never happened again if it weren't for the animation the average person would probably watch this thing and go okay i'm on board let's see how this works out the family arrives on kyle's home planet our guy gets a hero's welcome everybody thinks he's there to save the day and win the war we meet the king who is simultaneously the most repulsive yet weirdly entertaining character in the entire movie and as the family takes a tour around the planet you almost catch yourself enjoying the ride the music during these sequences is really good i have to say it's actually a highlight of the entire film it really helps to carry a lot of the scenes that might have otherwise been off-putting so kyle tells the king he is not interested in coming back and fighting but the king has sort of slightly arranged a big banquet and basically says to kyle hey abandon us if you want but you'll have to tell the entire planet your decision personally several more characters from kyle's past are introduced we learn about how he became the biggest war hero on the planet the kids get into some antics a lot of it is based in physical comedy which shouldn't work given the medium but the slapstick sequences are actually kind of improved by the choppy animation and i say choppy animation but if i can be honest there's really never anything too distracting there's some floaty feet here and there but my animations are guilty of that too another thing that you would expect to be terrible is the voice acting yet like most of the things in this movie it sort of works there are a couple of stilted lines here or there sure a few characters hammered up on occasion but the main characters are all convincingly delivered and there's just sort of an endearing quality to it all one thing i did notice is that especially with characters like the king who have some of the rougher voice performances the character animation is designed to work with it anytime there was a badly delivered line i laughed out loud because it almost seemed intentional and i wasn't laughing at the movie like wow this is terrible i was laughing at myself like wow i can't believe i'm actually sort of buying this oh forget about your family for one night why don't you follow what your heart really wants that's quite enough ayanna have a nice night well you know where to find me when you change your mind don't do it man a chick is bad news bears so the big banquet scene takes place and this part of the movie really gets to the heart of the story's conflict which is will kyle accept his past and hop back into the role that his planet desperately needs him to fill or will he return to earth and the new life that he's created for himself having now lost the desire for war or is there a third option where he can find a way to reconcile these two lives this is a really interesting theme there are a few lines of dialogue that really make you wonder what the right option is without giving much away kyle and his family are thrust into the heat of battle and the final act of the movie is one long elaborate action piece that is full of great camera work great execution i mean if this was being performed by a-list actors you would think it was a blockbuster movie i can only imagine the amount of work that one guy had to go through to animate all of this on his own my hat is off to him because a lot of these moments like the shootout on the crashing carrier ship the car chase the battle with the four-armed alien monster thing they are all incredibly well put together there is a cohesion to the entire sequence this isn't just a bunch of randomly cut together clips this is a legitimate final action scene when the movie starts it's full of very simple animations here and there but by the end you have a full on big budget like fight scene that clearly took a ton of intricate planning it makes me wonder if he animated this movie in order after finishing the movie i totally get why it took 13 years this movie honestly is very cohesive and has a lot of great moments it is remarkable that this is the work of one guy on his home computer but the tragedy is nobody knows about this movie as weirdly entertaining as it is nobody knows about it i mean this guy made it and then he just put it on amazon and that's it i mean who's looking for this thing yes this sounds crazy yes it sounds like i have lost it but i sat down yesterday to watch this with the lowest of low expectations it sounds so dumb it was one of the best movies i've watched this year i don't know why i really want this movie to do well it really pains me that nobody's watched this movie i think it's pretty good and he spent so long on it people need to watch this let's make this one of the biggest movies of the summer that's something worth working for right it's on amazon prime right now if you are looking for an oddly charming pg-13 sci-fi action adventure buy a copy rent a copy support the creator he spent 13 years on this thing i can guarantee you this he has no idea that i read his email he has no idea that i am making this video you
