Is the 2023 BMW M4 CSL the BEST new luxury performance coupe?

hey guys what's up it's Joe R from R's rides I'm back here at dream giveaway garage and guess what I have one heck of a dream performance car for you it's this thing right here what is it it's a 2023 BMW M4 CSL but before we get into this only one of a th000 Vehicles being produced for model year 2023 let's talk about what's going on here BMW you a lot of people associate obviously automobiles SUVs even motorcycles but it isn't what they first produced if you go back to the early days of BMW it was all about airplanes and airplane engines then after World War I which remember ended in 1918 that is when they produced their first motorcycle and then by 1933 BMW finally stepped up to automobiles crazy to think that it's been that many decades and one heck of a journey for BMW because not only bringing luxury not only bringing Unique Style but of course bringing performance now this vehicle known as the M4 whenever you see that M badge this is a true M car that means you're going to get a lot of extra performance over your normal 4 Series Coupe but what's fascinating is with the letters CSL that stands for competition sport lightweight so what they're doing is they're taking a lot of that Tech and a lot of that experience from the racetrack running in the DTM Series in Germany running at the nurburging winning at the 24 hours of Lama Daytona 12 hours of Sebring lots of historic moments for BMW being pumped into this M4 but like I said it's only one of a thousand that are being made but what I want to find out is if you're you're looking for that ultimate go-to for performance at a certain price point do you go BMW M4 CSL or should you maybe go Corvette Z6 or even Porsche Cayman GT4 RS so let's go ahead let's dive into this Sinister black M4 CSL and find out right off the bat style it's interesting how this m Ford design when it is Painted Black it takes on a totally different personality than any other color and at the front of the business of course you're going to get that unique headlight design from BMW we have the halo lights which are no longer totally round but they're still that same basic style all LED you can see our headlights with the blue position there looking good on the interior and then working your way down you're going to get some unique Arrow that's specific to the CSL first of all you have your massive Corner air curtains but then you're also going to notice full carbon fiber splitter all the way across not only is it functional to give us extra downforce but it is going to help cut weight and that's one of the things if you've been paying attention CSL competition sport lightweight there's a lot of lightweight goodies on this vehicle that's going to shed well over 200 lb of weight from a standard M4 now as we come across that front grill this has been still to this day very controversial but like I said with the black I think it kind of masks that large snout kind of Grill you have your M4 CSL badge with the red trim love the way they did the red trim all the way the openings of those massive functional grills and then you're of course going to get even more carbon fiber on the inner portions of the front facia that's all for brake cooling bringing cool air for all of the Heat exchangers and then I love like I said that extra splitter that goes all the way across because remember we're trying to stop air from going underneath the vehicle we want to give us downforce especially if you're going to be at the racetrack now as you rise up of course you got that badge Bavarian Motor Works so much history with that celebratory badge and then what you're going to find even though there's black paint poured all over this vehicle they did let some of the carbon fiber shine through full carbon fiber hood here's the bare carbon fiber that is showing through over with the clear coat over it and then I like the way that they sort of outline those two indentations with the red trim just like up front that's a nice combination that's part of the CSL package is seeing that red trim that's how you know you have a true CSL M4 but definitely love the shape of the hood I think the only zon that I have for it I wish in these indentations that they had heat extractors other than that a nice light hood is going to shed some great weight now as we come around the bend get ready for some competition setups on our wheels and tires you're going to have Forge aluminum wheels so you have 19in wheels up front 20in wheels out back and then you'll notice carbon ceramic brake rotor standard they're two-piece rotors that sheds 56 lb of unsprung weight so that rotating mass unsprung weight 56 lb less when you add up all four corners and what that means is you're going to have a quicker steering better handling M4 those massive calipers bright red to match all the other red trim the six piston calipers with the m badge remember m stands for Motorsports and of course we have those Wheels wrapped and those Pilot Sport 4S tires give you a nice balance between stickiness but also some durability and up front you're looking at 275 on the width and a 35 series sidewall they did adjust the suspension all four corners the compression and rebound damping of the Adaptive shocks to give you handling like no other BMW is going to give you now coming down the side you do have that indentation which I wish was a heat extractor so I am going to zon it but I do like the way they put the M4 badge there it just it wouldn't take much to make these pieces functional and you would think you would need to because we're talking about more horsepower than any M4 before it for Street production use carbon fiber mirror caps and I love the way that BMW sculpts the arrow into their side mirrors that's going to help Channel The Air down the side of the vehicle up top we have a full carbon fiber roof that sheds 9 lb of weight up top and I love the way that they brought more of the red striping towards the back of the roof on the side you do have the side skirt extensions surprisingly not in carbon fiber so that kind of has me shaking my head and scratch in my head why didn't they do that in carbon fiber so let me know if you think that should be carbon fiber I think it should be so I am going to Zonk it but you'll notice how they carry the red all the way along that side skirt extension towards the rear of the vehicle now when we say M4 that is a two-door version if you want a four-door M car you need to go with something like an M3 out back I do love the way they flare out the rear fender and what you're going to notice on the rear wheels and tires is that you have a 20in wheel so 19in Wheels diameter up front 20in wheel on the back and we have 285s on the back to give us some more rubber to meet the road for that grip and that handling and of course we got the carbon ceramic brake rotors all the way around that goes without saying now when we get to the rear you're going to get a unique trunk not just a stuck on thing but a totally unique trunk to the CSL it's got a duck bill kick up spoiler you'll notice the arrow that they work in the center and then the air is going to hit and give you functional downforce let me know how you feel about this trunk lid of course just like up front with all the special LED lighting you're going to get that on the tail lights we got our M4 CSL competition sport lightweight on the back and then as we Drop It Like It's Hot which this thing is pretty hot we do have this massive rear diffuser that is full carbon fiber nice titanium exhaust slash cut sheds n lbs of weight with the titanium exhaust I do like the black tips and the way they have a nice slash cut perfectly displayed and especially there's going to be arrow with this rear diffuser to help channel the air out the back of the vehicle but definitely looks mean and lean let's pop the hood and see what's powering this M4 CSL all right guys we got the hood popped This Hood saves another 9 lbs or so from the weight of this M4 CSL love the way you have the raw carbon fiber underneath with the M logo in there looking good and then as we drop down there is more bracing on this end compartment than there is on the Skyway Bridge here in the Tampa St Pete area but it's not just about the bracing it's about the extra performance so what do we got going on with this competition sport lightweight we have that 3 l straight six that's a twin turbocharge engine now producing 543 horsepower 479 lb feet of torque Peak boost for the turbos has been bumped up from 24.7 lb to 30.5 lb of boost it is made it to a ZF 8-speed automatic you do have the M Sport rear diff limited slip rear diff 0 to 60 in 3.3 seconds qu Mile in 11.2 at 131 miles hour and the vehicle weighs 3,580 lbs top speed 191 mph and if you care about MPGs 16 in the city 23 on the highway now what's interesting is that this is a two-seater that's going to shed another 46 lb you got the carbon brakes like I said is about 56 lb a carbon fiber center console that saves 9 lb less sound insulation it's 33 lb less weight just from The Sound insulation 9 lb off the roof 9 lb off the hood 9 lb off the titanium exhaust which is going to give you over 200 lb of weight Sav savings and like I said it's a two-seater so no rear seat but why we go ahead let's fire up this German beast and hear its [Music] Roar all right guys we are inside this 2023 BMW M4 CSL I know you're saying to yourself with Joe this is one bad mama jama I want one of these what's the price so MSRP for we're comparing it to the GT4 RS let's see how it Stacks up to the door panels I love the clean German style in a BMW white contrast stitching up top and then as you trickle down it goes white red contrast stitching no gloss black some silver around the lock and unlock switch gear which looks tasteful and then the door pocket is a decent size for four Dunkin Donuts glazed of course or Bavarian cream and then you do have a spot for a large Dunkin Donuts coffee because you're going to be want to be well caffeinated when you drive this Beast now going from the door B to the dash smooth soft touch material you do have some carbon fiber but I'm going to have to zon this area it should say CSL for your passenger to stare at now as you slide on in you're going to get that usual 10.25 in infotainment system screen obviously it's got many different functions I'm going to show you the ones that are very important for the CSL you go into driving information that's going to allow you to bring up sport displays horsepower torque your G meter all those goodies you could go into your energy flow to see that power being sent and then if you notice we go back one more and then we could go into the M menu so you could set up your configurations for your M buttons or you could even do things like the M drift analyzer this has a drift mode and it will actually score your drifting capabilities so you could be just like Von G Jr in your dreams working your way down you got your dual climate control control heated seats no ventilated seats and I'll show you why there's no ventilated seats in a few seconds you got your radio controls and then guess what the shed weight like I said we have a full carbon fiber center console the good news is they still give you wireless charging this is going to control your 8-speed automatic transmission you got your direct drive control knob the CSL badge on this nice little place to rest your palm of course you got to have a little Nook for at least three track day twinkies and there's a USB BC and I like the way they finished it off with some leather and some stitching and then we have these carbon fiber bucket performance seats whole back of the seat is carbon fiber and then I love the way it has the leather nice bolstering bolster on the side which looks unbelievable full electric assist and you even have the carbon fiber crotch portion of the seat just be careful you don't hurt your family jewels on that I feel like a race car bug snug in a race car rug in this thing I mean it feels very racy and don't forget we have rear seat delete so no rear seat you just have some carpet and a cargo net but why don't you come over here to the business end I want to show you behind this CSL specific steering wheel in this M4 all right guys business time behind the wheel you do get a special seal plate with the M4 CSL badge nicely done and you have a pedal box right out of a race car nice large aluminum dead Pedal brake pedal and throttle you have your full power seat controls even though this is a race bucket seat like the way you have that I'm 6 feet tall plenty of room in here remember if you don't know the history to BMW CSL was used for their special race cars Peter Greg won the Rolex 24 before it was called the Rolex 24 it was just the Daytona 24-hour race in a a CSL BMW just so you know that's where that whole they didn't just pick letters out of their rear end that would be really weird and probably hurt but anyways steering wheel specific to the CSL alcanta all around you have your BMW Motorsport colors the red and the two Blues carbon fiber you got your preference buttons and carbon fiber paddles to go up and down that 8-speed automatic it is manual tilting and telescoping steering wheel and you got that nice large digital display all the information you need plus a head-up display love the way they have that the head-up display has the tack and everything gear indicator nicely placed plus you have ambient Lighting in here so don't think that BMW isn't going to give you ambient lighting even though this is a super light not going to show you the trunk you could see those on any other M4 review but you know what if you're ready I'm ready let's go on throttle in this M4 CSL all right guys we are inside this 2023 BMW M4 CSL I have it in track mode and I'm going to be shifting with those carbon fiber paddles I can't wait to throw this thing through the twisty bits if you're ready I'm ready here we go thr yeah nice I love the sound coming into the cabin it's so freaking button up up and just really feels like you could just throw it into any Bend and it's going to just respond perfectly look at this on [Music] up yeah those carbon ceramic brake rotors really doing the business shedding speed faster than a German Shepherd sheds hair with the tuning and track track mode you definitely feel the stiffer suspension and it does get a little bouncy so you're going to want to make sure you're on a very smooth Road or a very smooth race course large 13-in head-up display the seats hold you in very well it does take a little effort to get in once you're in you're good to go I just don't like the way they're full leather because I feel like I have a little too much movement in the lower portion of the seat especially when you compare it to a GT4 RS those carbon fiber performance bucket seats the paddles are nice and large so you're not going to miss a shift and definitely you could feel the work that they've done with the steering and definitely the extra power that you're getting but really when when you're in track mode the ships are very very purposeful and it feels like you're getting kicked in the back by a donkey are you ready second gear this is what we're going to do on here we go nice on the brakes there's that good turn in yeah o nice look at this wooo I tell you the feedback that's coming through the four tires into this cabin and into this seat and steering wheel allow me to really know exactly how much grip I have and what the car is doing underneath me and where you're really getting that extra specialness is because of the lighter weight of the vehicle the change the way it changes directions is so much quicker and so much more responsive you're going to notice the difference between this and an M4 competition hands down with less sound dening material of course you're going to run into more road noise entering the cabin but I think that's that's part of the Mystique of this car right it's not about closing out the outside world it's about letting the right information come in so that you know exactly how the car is responding to your inputs but definitely the extra power I mean 30.5 lbs of Boost from those twin turbos on this straight 6 incredible Let's uh go on throttle from uh a dead stop on throw here we go yeah little tire spin that's okay goly I tell you you look down at the speedometer you look in the head up display it feels like you're in Vegas playing a slot machine that's how fast the digits are spinning and how it just puts you in a Time Warp so you definitely want to be on your aame with this car and I really think I'm not a I'm I love black cars I would never own one again I've already played that game but definitely this thing is looking very Sinister in Black it really really is God those shifts are you ready we got to do it one more time I'm going to drop it down a second like I said this the seat I'm sliding just a little bit look at I should not be able to do this in a race seat that should not happen but side to side we're locked and loaded on here we go on the brakes yeah nice look look at my inputs my hands are so steady my hands are so freaking steady on the wheel that shows you that they've done the work to make this the ultimate driving machine that's what BMW is to be all about it's back and it's in this CSL you got to spend $145,000 to get it but it's back all right guys I lied call me out I'm going to do one more time we got to go on throttle one more time especially for you guys you guys deserve are you ready on thr here we go second gear woo slip it's line away nice [Music] God woo [Music] I tell you when the car is sitting still you say to yourself okay that's a nice BMW it's got some carbon fiber bits on it whoop it doah but when you go on throttle that's when it all comes together and you really see what this vehicle is about it's about the combin the combination of all the parts working harmoniously together the shedding of the weight the more power the carbon ceramic brake rotors the forg aluminum wheels all those goodies all coming together to just give you a superb Driving
