hey guys it's fumaya if you're new here welcome if you're not welcome back either way you are welcome i am a recent law school graduate in my late 20s i cover everything that has to do with my adulting journey to help you through your 20s every step of the way from career and education to mental health and wellness so if you're interested in that content definitely subscribe and sign up for notifications so that you don't miss any future updates from me so today i'm tackling one of the most commonly asked questions and that is is law school worth it and in true law school fashion my answer is it depends so when people say is law school worth it i think what they want to know is is it worth the money and is it worth the work and those are two different questions right and different considerations go into answering both i'm going to tackle the is it worth the money question because that's a little bit easier to think about and a little bit simpler to calculate and consider so if you're looking to go to law school that can run you anywhere from a hundred thousand to three hundred thousand dollars in student loan debt student loan debt is not the worst kind of debt you can have but it's still debt so that's something to think about there are different schools of thought when it comes to weighing prestige versus money when deciding between which law school to choose so a lot of people will say well the proceed of your law degree doesn't matter it's not the be-all end-all so go to the place that gives you the most money and that's valid and that's a hundred percent true for some people other people will say well listen i have a very discreet set of goals and i think that prestige will weigh a lot more when it comes to the exit options that i will be interested in so i'm willing to forgo some money in order to take a more prestigious name that decision is going to come down to what your priorities are and how necessary you think the prestige of your degree will be to your choices and i can't make that decision for you but i will say if you're thinking about the money aspect prestigious side one thing you want to really consider is what you want to do outside of law school so if you want to go into public interest law you need to think about what that means for loan repayment now a lot of top schools have really honed in on low repayment programs i know that my law school has a public interest scholarship when it comes to the monetary aspect there are just things you need to ask yourself about your priorities what you're willing to do what you want to do and that's what will help you make that decision now on the other side the less tangible side of things is law school worth it just in terms of the skills you acquire the degree what can you do with a law degree there are a lot of things you can do you can practice law which is what a lot of people tend to do a lot of people end up leaving the practice of law to do something else that their law degree is not necessary for and then you might ask yourself well did that person need a law degree at all so what i will say is my law degree has paid crazy dividends in the less tangible aspects of what i gained from it for example when it comes to understanding arguments when it comes to reasoning and just logical critical thinking my law degree has done more for my development than any other educational experience i have ever had i did go to college obviously you need to do that to go to law school i did work for about four years before going to law school and those three years in law school the way that i learned to interpret arguments and also deliver arguments is unparalleled if this were a year ago even two years ago my answer might have been different but where we are right now as a country as a global community i think a law degree and that education that you get in law school is going to be in valuable we are at a point in history where things are changing people's eyes have been opened to systemic issues systemic inequalities that have dominated our culture and society for decades centuries and people are at the point where they're fed up and they want an end to it and our rights are constitutional rights are being implicated every single day whether you agree or not with either side issues like mass mandates issues like police brutality they implicate our constitutional rights directly and these issues are coming to the forefront of the national debate and this is where a law degree more importantly the skills that you are taught in law school are invaluable because in law school you are taught how to look at a complex issue and deliver the best solution by applying the law to a particular set of facts all law school exams in the classical sense are an issue spotter or a fact pattern and what that is is your professor will give you a set of facts and then you'll be expected to apply the law that you've learned that semester to that particular set of facts now these facts will just be like a story it'll read like a narrative that someone is telling you about an event or a set of circumstances that have happened and you will have to apply the law to the legally relevant facts in order to come up with a solution for this person kind of like a hypothetical client your professor is not going to grade you based on the conclusion that you come to that's not going to be what dictates your grade you could come to one conclusion and another person could come to the exact opposite conclusion and both those answers will be considered okay correct for the sake of grading as long as the reasoning and logic that you apply to get to those respective conclusions is legally sound and so that is what makes law school so great because you're rewarded not for your point of view or your perspective or what you actually conclude you're rewarded for your ability to think and reason through a complex issue in a way that is logical and we need more people who are trained in the ability to say here are the facts here's what the law says if there's a law that needs to be changed here's how we should change it but let's go about things in a way that's reasonable and logical let's take out sentiment let's take out all the necessary blurring factors and that is what law school has enabled me to do now do i think that the law should be sterile in this way no i am a hundred percent for legal realism over legal formalism but i do think that that skill is something that has been intangibly beneficial if you guys have questions or thoughts let me know i say a law degree is worth it it depends on what your goals are though i hope you found that video helpful um thank you so much for
