question one Mario or classical [Music] interesting oh see right at the beginning it sounds exactly like the um you know like the Fanfare you got to the castle Fanfare whatever it's called the level complete theme or whatever from the original uh Super Mario Bros but then I don't recognize the melody at all uh past that so it must be a it must be classical but I don't know I got a uh Peach's castle that oh yeah dude I felt like there was kind of a hint of that I'm gonna go Mario actually I'm going classical I think they're trying to to trick us with the arpeggio triplet arpeggio thing I am a teacher I'm a teacher Super Mario no sweater what the heck is what is this Super Mario sweater okay these are some deep Cuts okay I didn't realize what I was getting into here okay well I did tell them to challenge you because I was like you know this will be too easy that's good yeah absolutely we know this so all right yeah uh anyway like this all right today we're gonna try and see if we can figure out if music is from a Mario game or it's classical and I'm joined by Ben Kidd from 8-bit music theory thanks for joining me thanks for having me are you are you confident are you ready I was confident no I am ready I'm ready to go let's do it it's over it's over okay yeah I would have got this for sure anyway though I put the heck out of this game as a kid it really sounds like Pokemon music when you arrange it this way it does yeah mozartian I suppose Pokemon yeah um I recognize I recognize the tune from Mario Kart 8 yeah maybe maybe level but is this is that is it from somewhere else too no I think it's because double bash had baby Park and then they redid that course for Mario Kart 8 so okay you know as far as I know there it is Double Dash BOOM this I took some effort super Mozart cart yeah that's awesome [Music] let's carry on all right number three Mario or classical [Music] I think that ghost is there to try to mislead us I think so too yeah I I'm leaning classical just from the the uh vocabulary of it you know feels very very classical it feels like it's about to go off into this harmonic sequence cycling through until it lands in some sort of other key so totally classical as well although I can't possibly place it exactly classical classical lock it in what okay Valentina theme wow all right see that's true that's like uh uh a lot of the times the tunes for Mario that are from video games that are trying to approximate the classical thing they'll have like some element that wouldn't actually be historically accurate in there but this one did a very good job of not doing that legit right yeah I didn't recognize that at all man that's I loved that game but yeah oh yeah all right number four I'm kind of giving up hope anymore but let's see what we got number four okay Mario classical [Music] that feels very NES like uh like that pattern would be super awkward to play on an actual keyboard right I'm not a keyboard player so I don't actually really know but that specific leap is unrealistic I would say but unless you kept one hand going and cry yeah oh I see but that you hear that in Old chiptune I feel like you hear that kind of effect like all the time so I'm going Mario boom what's it from it's not the first game the first NES game because I know that whole soundtrack front to back but it's probably like Mario 2 or maybe three I don't recognize it but so maybe Mario too I'm gonna go Mozart or not Mozart classical sure because ah let's start getting my ass kicked it's really written like wow Mozart had some chops that's impressive to be able to land that I would think maybe crossing over I don't know right I'm not really a classical piano these are really well picked examples that was such a great they got you right yeah number five okay Mario classical foreign [Music] I don't know I'm getting I'm not trusting myself anymore but uh I don't know obviously it's very harmonically very classical classically influenced if it's not a classical tune with all the kind of diminished chords leading into minor chords but then uh just that very last well I don't know see okay my thought is on the one hand a lot of video game music sticks to four bar phrases and a lot of classical music doesn't like in my limited experience not that I listen to tons of Mozart but I feel like he usually breaks out of the phrasing the like you know four bar phrasing um but it does feel very classical but then also at the very last kind of like B flat G sharp a in the bass like would that would Mozart do that would that be a classical move that seems like too modern to me but I think it yeah I'm leaning towards Mozart on this um the chromatic line is very mozarteen descending like that oh it's not fully chromatic I guess but those little chromaticisms yeah okay unreal I don't know it's probably a trick I'll go Mozart though uh I'm going to go um I'm gonna go Mario because the very first oh I don't know I'm always whenever I do listen to Mozart I'm very always impressed at how modern it sounds you know like there's always stuff in there where I'm like oh really that he was already doing that back then but that very first line the a to G sharp to G to to f that felt like that stood out as being like a not classical kind of move to me but then I don't know well if you're doing you're doing classical or you're doing uh Mario I'm going classical okay I'll go Mario let's do it nice okay 64. and all right okay I got one you're on the board yeah number six okay Mario for classical oh [Music] I know I don't know what that is I couldn't place it but I'm going classical I'm getting classical vibes well it would have to be like everything else is missing or something right like it's just the baseline or something well true actually that's a good point unless it's like a Requiem or something hmm maybe it's a little slower and it's going to be or it's like the uh the theme for a few that's gonna then be oh I see okay yeah I could see that well because yeah what in what Mario game would there just be a baseline going to I could you know I could see it in like a blue house one line and then spooky noises going on around it I'm going Mario oh okay interesting oh I see a big octave thing yeah that's why interesting that's a cool Melody and it probably does Go off into all sorts of interesting [Music] here we go oh good Mario or classical oh my goodness okay [Music] oh [Music] uh I've I'm I feel like that's very classical just having offbeats [Laughter] it makes it more exciting I guess more competitive sure that's I you know like uh like uh I feel like that's a common like a string um Austin yeah but yeah I'm not as well versed as you so I don't know I'm leaning towards Mario because of the chord progression repetition oh truly that's kind of but yeah I don't know and it could be simplified it could be a trick I'll go Mario right okay I'll go classical ah okay Luigi Luigi you're right about the strings hell yeah and it just repeats interesting [Music] you're repetitive Luigi yeah no wonder you're not going well all right here we go number great okay let's see okay whoa what the heck you know what yeah okay I don't recognize it at all um so I'll let you go first let's see uh I'm thinking I'm leading classical anytime I don't recognize that I lean classical just because uh yeah it's fair you know but then it could be a Mario sweater situation [Laughter] which which part was it there's a part with like a real real Clash was it the uh [Music] that uh like in bar four having the F sharp and the G sharp and the a all in the same chord feels so raunchy to me but I know it's part of like a chromatic this is this like uh delayed right yeah into the a right but that seems you know from what I know that seems like a something that was appreciated more hundreds of years ago than it would be now so I'm going classical not 100 certain on the name but I believe it's the castle theme from Super Mario World really okay ah yeah you nailed it [Music] that's super cool wow yeah um that one yeah I guess this game is like a pivotal in my gaming childhood oh yeah yeah it was all just a bit before my time but I you know as a as a video game music YouTuber I should really know this soundtrack I'm sure Castle themes is a is a would be a good topic right true actually all right here we go Mario or classical number nine [Music] thank you that's awesome I feel like I always guess first do I guess first I don't recognize it at all so I'm gonna say classical I was thinking classical because of the um uh breaks you know like most gay music tends to try and be more consistent because it's background music you know um and this would be very attention grabbing but also I've been wrong more than I've been right so if you're gonna guess classical maybe I'll do Mario because I'm because you assume I'm wrong no no it's more fun that way all right I'm going classical okay yeah yeah yeah all right [Music] it's all about this that's so sick number 10. oh here we go [Music] okay that seems so classical that it seems like it must be trying to trick me but I'll go I'd go classical so neat and tidy no I don't I don't recognize that at all it is so neat and tidy I feel like this is like a sweater or something yeah I'll go Mario I don't know it but it has that happy happy-go-lucky feel to it definitely does you're going classical I'm going classical still let's do it ah still the road is full of dangers not what I would have titled that [Music] oh that would be awesome orchestral yeah totally very uh Super Mario RPG has so many classically classical sounding Tunes in it I wish there's some sort of illegal legal trouble I think is why they haven't re-released that game oh Square Enix or something so long for that to yeah to come out but I just want to man okay we have a bonus round bonus round okay my shirt's appropriate now let's do it there you go what gain what Legend of Zelda games are these themes from okay okay I guess bonus point if you name the exact theme okay oh I know this [Music] okay I think I I think I got it [Music] you think you know it I think my guess is Orden Ranch from uh Twilight Princess wow what system was that on uh it was GameCube and Wii it was like right right over the transition to Wii so they put it on both yeah I recognize that Melody but I know I've never actually played Twilight Princess it might not be ordered Ranch actually it's Gotta Be Twilight Princess so I'm I'm positive all right I would have said like Ocarina of Time or something so I'm gonna I'm gonna lose that one uh we have to remember all five I think okay oh too easy this is great sorry I should say too easy yeah [Music] is that a Nintendo 64 one you said too easy I recognized the song but I'm failing it's a disaster for me is that Ocarina of Time so give it so give it to you yeah it's uh astral Observatory from Majora's Mask Majora's Mask oh yeah all right number three that's a great tune oh yeah which is right in my wheelhouse [Music] thank you [Music] I'll go first just because I don't know and I think you're kicking my ass in this round is that Spirit Tracks no that's a good guess though that totally is the same flavor but I did a whole video on uh dragon Roost Island from Wind Waker so that's that's that one wow that's funny I'd say Spirit Tracks yeah the cast Nets and everything I feel like that's totally whistly sound yeah yeah oh well [Music] I know it's okay [Music] laughs it feels like the Nintendo 64 palette so I'll try Ocarina of Time again I think you're right it's Ocarina of Time I'm pretty sure I'm not 100 sure like what's the elements but I'm pretty sure it's the catching chickens theme right like mini game theme and fun fact I read an interview with Koji kondo uh where they're asking like what's your favorite piece of music that you wrote for Ocarina of Time and he said this one he said I think I really nailed the the atmosphere of trying to catch chickens in a mini game it's like I mean you did but of all the tunes you wrote that's okay right [Laughter] weird all right yeah okay last one all right oh oh what is this [Music] that really feels like one of the Mario Game Boy games to me but I am fairly certain that's a trick question in Super Mario 3. oh oh I feel confident that's menu me it's a world map oh I think you're I feel like we did this on the last Mario quiz thing we did was I think it was maybe even the same track yeah oh that's funny good princess or the village Pastor Observatory bigger dragon race Island horse race oh horse race not the chicken one half credit oh okay okay all right yeah you nailed it trick question that's funny thanks for playing uh that's great well I bombed the the bonus round it might as well have been Pikmin because I wouldn't know well you probably creamed me in the I can't remember now how we did in the main game it was pretty split I think we we both had a good streak in there for sure oh it was 50 15. that was fun though all right thanks for playing thank you good luck good luck to all you who played that's not how you did see you next time
