Is Container Store WORTH THE COST?? (Declutter & Organize with me!)

I'm wondering if you want to do some organizing with me I have this like huge mess of cords here and then this is like a mix of craft supplies and some computer stuff and so I got a couple new things a cord organizing kit off of Amazon and then also I never get containers from The Container Store so if you have an area that you need to work on too why don't you head over there and we can work together okay so we put these cabinets in about three or four years ago I don't know three years ago and this one never really got organized it doesn't have tons and tons of like inventory so I've still been able to get to what I need um but it could definitely look a lot better here right so I got this kit off of Amazon there are like a million pieces in here so I'm pretty sure we'll have everything we need to organize all the cords here on the top and then I really think for the bottom because it's kind of a tall spot I had thought about adding another shelf but I just don't really think we need that much extra storage there and it's just kind of a hassle but these are nice and tall and narrow and I have two different sizes so I'm thinking I think we can make this work so why don't we I'm trying to decide should we start with the top or yeah why don't we start with the cords and then um we'll move to the bottom shelf okay I was just laying out everything that came in this kit so I'm familiar with it there's actually a lot so these are like um Velcro there's a bunch of them here but little velcro ties for the cords a bunch of different ones of these things I'm sure you've seen these things before all kinds of like different sizes multiple chords single cords and here's more just like velcro tape um for bunching stuff up I imagine some of these guys if you want to put a bunch of cords together which can be really handy especially like behind TVs and that kind of stuff um a package of zip ties and then these are kind of neat because they open so you could Oh wrong way sorry um so you could like put chords in there and then close it and like stick it to a wall or something so that's kind of neat if you need to like be able to get stuff in and out so we have plenty of options to choose from let's see if we can make this work okay so there's this actually isn't supposed to even B in here so that we're going to put away all right and then we just have random Tech stuff so uh what is it called a webcam or whatever um we'll set that up here for now camera grip all right so this stuff I do keep down here so this I need to find some kind of container for so we'll do that we have this whole power strip and there's only two cords plugged into it that kind of seems like Overkill doesn't it I wonder if this is the best solution here because this is a really long one My Hope was to not have to turn off the computer and just be able to do this all right so this is our modem and router I think I'm going to shut down the computer and then we'll keep then I can unplug everything that'll make it easier okay I turned off my computer so now we can unplug this stuff which I think will make it a little bit easier see if we can pull this cord out of here okay so I'm just trying to get all of these cords kind of like sorted out straightened out they were kind of like interwoven I actually thought this was going to be easier than it was my biggest fear is making the internet not work and then not having Internet and having to call the people and all that and figure out what I did wrong so I'm trying to only unplug like one cord at a time if I need to to untangle them and yes I do know we should have an outlet cover on there that is on my list too to get so this is the power strip that I pulled out like it is the longest cord and I know I just used it because we had it when I set this up so I think I'm gonna see if I can find something shorter for in here I don't even need it really if I could get everything to plug in here okay so I have no idea what this cord is for it's coming out of here and it's not plugged into anything but yet I don't just want to get rid of it because I don't know what it's for so I think I'm just gonna roll it up and use one of these Velcro tie things on it and we'll just keep it for now I'm using these velcro um little tab things that came with they have the hole in it so you can just like put it through so these work great and then also this whole roll of just like Velcro stuff I'm just cutting strips of this and using this and this works really well it sticks to itself really well um and so even though like I don't know is it possible to make the cords look totally neat even though it's not looking as neat as I always like to at least it is feeling more contained so I do I do like that um and there are just there's just some chords here that I'm like I don't know there's two chords coming out of the wall that attach to nothing but I can't just like cut them off or something right like I don't know so I'm just rolling them up I'm putting some Velcro stuff around them and it just kind of like is what it is and then I'm wiping down the Shelf too it was It was obviously just kind of dirty and my hope is that once I get all of this kind of straightened up it will be easier to wipe the Shelf down moving forward so then I can keep it a little cleaner too but that's that's not like a super big turn of mine but a little bit it would be nice right okay so coming up next I want to talk about how not to stuff Shuffle because sometimes when we're decluttering and organizing we there is this this stuff and I think oh actually one of these chords um and I think all this other stuff can actually go out to my office so I don't think this stuff needs to be here I think we just need a home for this stuff so I have a few other extra containers let's see if one of those will work okay honestly I was hoping this would come out a little better it still looks a little bit messy but it's okay um I was actually I don't think I need this I just turned my computer back on the internet works my computer works so I don't think we need this this cord was plugged in I have no idea what it goes to I think there was nothing on the other end but it was taking up a valuable plug-in spot so um we actually still have one open Outlet I will get a cover for them um so way better and this stuff can I don't know we'll deal with that at the end what we're gonna do with all this stuff okay so then um I just have these few things that I do want to keep in here I had this container left over from when we did the bathroom so I thought maybe that would be kind of nice um because it's divided otherwise I mean I do have just like some containers like this from the dollar store those would totally work I do like the clear container so you can see what's in it um so well let's just see really in here I think you could use any number of containers um the only thing I'm thinking though is nothing came in this kit to label cords and I think that can be really helpful I'm trying to do a better job of it so I just use my label maker in fact you can see on this hard drive I have a label on here it said temporary or temp for um temp drive so I had been pretty good about labeling stuff um so I do want to make a label for this chord so that I remember what it's for and so I don't accidentally get rid of it because you know I don't like to keep any extra inventory that I don't have to all right um I love it when I turn this on and the kids have their names in it all right this is let's see okay so you can just type it in hit print I think there's a cartridge yep good there's even a clear cartridge in here all right print and then it'll come out the side okay and then you just hit this thing here to cut it off there we go all right then I can put it on voila just like that so now I know what it is I can put it in there I won't forget you know I'm just kind of thinking that looks a little busy let's Let's test out these little Dollar Tree bins I think I like how that looks better I usually love a good clear acrylic band but it just wasn't doing it for me okay that looks better to me all right good let's move down to the lower shelf now oh no are these bins too deep that would make me so sad so these are upper cabinets that we just you know like in a kitchen like upper cabinets so they're not as deep as regular cabinets I didn't even think about that oh that's so frustrated okay well I think we can still fit these two deep let me see and like I mentioned these containers are they're actually from The Container Store they don't look that fancy I don't know I always expect container containers to look fancy Cass had showed them on her Instagram and I just really liked um how they kind of utilize more vertical space and so I'd actually shown them in our camper a couple weeks ago so I can link to that video as well um they worked awesome in our camper um and so then I got them for here there's one other space in the house I want to use them to for two that I'll show you I really like them a lot so these are the medium narrow-ness I don't know what they're called they're the medium size um I wish I didn't get the really narrow ones and now I wish I had I just got the medium and the large so in hindsight I would have got some of those too we haven't I had ordered these online and they had free shipping if you spend I don't know however much they were like five dollars each which is a little more than I normally like to spend I mean if I can get by with Dollar Tree stuff that is me all day long but I have also realized that when I do invest best in good bins I mean so I'm talking about like 20 or 25 dollars here um that I do feel like they keep the space better organized they use the space they utilize the space better and I have them for a really long time and so I'm okay now that I have more confidence in myself and organizing spending a little bit more money on organizing containers but not sponsored no affiliate nothing I make no nothing extra if you get anything from The Container Store I'm just saying I'm learning kind of like where to invest where not and this to me felt like a good place to get some good containers trusting that they'll be here for a long time okay full disclosure this is where we're at right now and this is the point where I'm like oh no what have I done right but I think we can get it pulled back together I don't love that I'm having to put the bins in that way instead of sticking them like straight in like I'd hoped but I still think they're going to be a good solution for this space I'm gonna finish putting back what I think should go in here and be in this cabinet and then the rest of the stuff um we will move out of this space or there's garbage mixed in here stuff that we just don't need anymore so we will let that stuff go to now the main thing when it comes to organizing though I think it is so important to understand your organizing style so for the longest time people would say hey have you taken the Clutter bug quiz like what bug are you do you know your organizing style and I'm like no because I don't like to organize I've told this story before when I finally like broke down and took the quiz people had told me all along they're like we think you're a ladybug right just by the different ways they saw me organizing our home but I finally took the quiz and it did confirm that I am a ladybug so that means I like stuff out of sight so I love that these cabinets have doors and I can close the doors and not see anything but what I've also found is that with behind the closed doors I really like clear bins I like to be able to open the doors and see the things otherwise I can forget about them right um and so having clear bins or opaque bins and having them labeled has been awesome for me so here I'm okay using clear bins or opaque bins because again it's behind closed doors so that has been really helpful for me to learn about myself and I have a a lot more confidence in myself organizing now that I know my clutter bug style so if if organizing just hasn't worked for you or you're not able to maintain it all those different things um take the Clutter bug quiz I'll put a link in the description find out what your organizing style is and then check out cast from clutterbug like her videos on organizing by that style because it is so helpful and it'll give you a lot more confidence when you're organizing [Music] foreign [Music] you know and over the years you know I used to organize spaces and they would not stay organized and make me feel like a loser to so I got to the point where like I said like I don't even like I didn't even want to organize stuff anymore because it just felt like it never stayed organized and so it has been really fun now for me to be able to see the areas in our home that I have organized and how they're staying organized now but again it's mostly because I've reduced the inventory so much and so if you have areas in your home that just are not working they're really hard to stay keep organized it could be because there's because there's still too much inventory and I know it's hard to get rid of things that we might use I mean like craft supplies office supplies those types of things um you know it's hard because like well I don't know I don't know if I'm gonna need Modge Podge in the future or not right and so I try to keep very basic craft supplies and then I've let all the other stuff go and I don't miss it I don't miss it at all actually and as I'm you know thinking about what I want to put back in this cabinet I just really want it to be stuff that I use all the time like this is pretty valuable real estate in our house we don't have tons of storage maybe you've noticed and so I only want stuff in here that we use all the time I want to keep it fairly minimal because then it's easy to keep organized it's easy to see what we have and I don't end up rebuying it I had actually like my chalk labels in here I had bought an extra set of the large ones because I couldn't find the other ones and so you know that happens to all of us and so as we continue to Pare down the inventory add in simple organization I think you'll find that you don't have that happening anymore and you'll probably find that your areas are staying organized too and it feels so good because most of us have been really hard on ourselves about not being able to stay organized and stay on top of our house and all that so keep reducing the inventory and I think you're gonna find too that it is actually pretty easy to keep it organized and not just that it's actually really fun too it was so I don't know I actually enjoy organizing too especially when I find like just the right containers for the space it's actually kind of gratifying okay so now here's the point though where we don't want to stuff Shuffle right I have this stuff I'm so this is what came out of that cabinet that I don't want to live in there anymore this is just garbage so we can move that out that's easy right but I have everything back in the cabinet how I want it to be and it looks really good and I'm excited about that um but we still have this stuff to deal with right and so I really think the key to not stuff shuffling where we just move stuff like oh now I'm gonna put in the basement now I'm gonna put in the office is being really honest with ourselves is this all stuff that I'm gonna use so even as I was going through it I was trying to throw away stuff that I knew we weren't going to use so this is some craft supplies um it's like these are like the paints that we use to stencil the wall here um just some other like like this is the cabinet paint that can just go in the basement um a little Canvas even this actually I'm gonna see if Adeline wants this and if not I'm gonna donate that so I'm gonna take that out um but I do have have a craft bin in the basement so this isn't that much so I'm going to put that stuff in there and then this is all techy stuff so here's our the rest of the cord kit right now I have to keep this but I think I'll use it out in the office um and then these were extra like cameras and different things that we've used over the years I have paired this down previously so this is all stuff that I want to keep for now and it's really just a pretty small container um so this stuff I'm going to bring out to the office and then along with this this is like a track pad that you can use instead of a mouse um and so that I want all the techie stuff to go out in the office um but I I do think it's all stuff that that I will use out there so that's why I'm gonna bring it out there right um and then this extra power strip see this is the toughening this is the mystery cord that I don't know what it's for and so actually what I think I'm gonna do I have some paint tape in there I think I'm going to write a note on here that I don't know what this cord is for and put a date on it so then when I come across it again if I'm organizing that space again or tidying it up um it'll have a date on it so I'll keep it for a while and then after a while I'll feel more confident just throwing it away or decluttering it because I'll have some data to work with I'll know how long it's been down there without being used so I'm gonna do that um this power strip it's a really nice one but I just like I just don't know if we need it I'm gonna double check with Tom and I'll probably just donate it if he doesn't have a use for it and then this guy can go out to the office as well so not too bad we got it narrowed down pretty good let me give you a final uh little tour here of our fancy cabinet okay so we're not actually keeping too much down here so I have one bin that has all my labeling stuff so my chalk labels chalk markers and then back here I put like the clip-on chalk labels and then good old label maker so that's that one this one just has some extra like uh extra printer cartridges these are the cartridges for the label maker and then these are tape refills so this is kind of like all refills kind of stuff and it can live back here I don't need to see it to know that it's there um so it's totally fine so it's totally fine if it's kind of like tucked in the back there and then this one is kind of not full I just have some paint tape we have to paint tape quite a bit for different things and then I just have some different um pens office supply kind of stuff there and then this one only has contact paper in here I actually use contact paper a fair amount um so I mean I'll probably get to a point where every drawer and shelf and cabinet has stuff in it but for now I have space for it and I do use it from time to time so I'm fine with that being in here if I had something else I wanted to put in that space I could move it um but I think it's fine so there's where we're at and I mean they fit in there nicely like I said my preference would have been to put them in this way but this works too it takes uh it uses up the vertical space more so I'm glad for that and honestly I don't even think we need another shelf in here so I'm I'm feeling pretty good about this oh and I'm also really happy to report that this cabinet that we organized last summer I can't believe it's been a year has stayed really well organized I really like everything we did in here so I can link to that video as well I think there's some good Solutions here and all together this just feels so good oh yeah and I will get the outlet covers I told Tom about that we have to cut them down a little bit that's the you know there's always that little step in there so we are gonna get those two but this feels really good okay so I feel really good about the progress we made today uh this was a pretty minor makeover but like I said I can link to the videos where we totally decluttered this section and we've also done a lot of decluttering and organizing in the bathrooms and the kitchen so I'll link to those videos as well but remember if any area of your house isn't working it probably means there's too much inventory there so continue to reduce the inventory and then you're gonna find
