after years of neglect and constant childhood trauma wait this video is about iPad Mini so this isn't my therapy session okay let me let me after years of neglect Apple delighted us all with a newly designed iPad Mini which took the popular design of the iPad Pro and the iPad Air and brought that to a small 8.3 inch tablet with Incredible performance and then it was kind of neglected again kind of like me I'm let's let's leave me out of it because this thing sat on the market for more than 545 days without an update which begs the question sitting here in 2023 should you even still consider getting an iPad Mini or is this thing doomed to be a forgotten piece of iPad history how's that for an intro that was a great intro that's an award-winning intro if this doesn't win the award-winning intro for the tech YouTube Awards uh we got a big problem because I'm not winning an Oscar anytime soon all right but listen to answer this question I think we need to take a look at the iPad lineup in its entirety to see what you're really getting or kind of giving up by going for Apple's smaller size tablet now looking at the iPad lineup I actually think that this iPad Mini fits right in in 2023 because it still has that design which lacks the home button and it has uniform bezels going around the entire iPad it basically looks like a smaller version of the iPad Air and that's both true and false now you might think that for an iPad that hasn't been updated in a year and a half it would be lacking in multiple areas like like me why does this video keep coming back to my faults but the mini was made a bit different than how Apple usually makes their smaller size products usually Apple's smaller display products are their budget oriented products and usually come with stripped out features but you'll notice that the iPad Mini strangely is actually 50 dollars more expensive than the base level iPad which does have a bigger 10.9 inch display so Apple isn't following their usual Playbook here and that's because the mini is a premium small size tablet and it does come with a lot of features that aren't present on Apple's bigger but more budget oriented iPad and it's worth considering does that philosophy still make sense to have a small premium tablet or should this be a more budget oriented device and I think Apple was right here I think for the mini it was smarter to go with a more premium tablet than one that was more budget oriented because this is serving a much smaller Market than it would have in years past and by going for that more premium feel the iPad Mini has aged pretty well and there are multiple areas where the mini still feels on par with other iPads even over a year later from it being updated one of those features is the display unlike the base level iPad this has a fully laminated display and it does support the full P3 wide color gamut so you do get even more colors and more color representation and that's not in the base level iPad and this iPad display is actually pretty unique so it's an 8.3 inch display obviously it's much smaller than any of the other iPads in the lineup and the iPad Mini actually has the highest pixels per inch out of any iPad display it's 326 pixels per inch because of this kind of iPad native resolution so theoretically this is the sharpest iPad display in the entire market now is it perfect no in a perfect world I would really like to see apple Implement a faster 120 hertz refresh rate on this iPad mini and I would also love to see Apple update this with either their excellent mini LED displays which are on the bigger iPad Pro which does seem kind of unlikely considering those still aren't on the smaller size version of the iPad Pro or by offering an OLED display to achieve not only more Vivid colors but also those nice deep Inky black levels however the display still does match up against other more expensive iPads like the iPad Air it is just smaller and there's other areas where this iPad's kind of on par two it has a decent set of stereo speakers especially considering the size it does have a fast USBC port for charging and data transfer which is much better than the base level iPad which does have a USBC Port but it is a slow one so in a lot of ways this is just an identical version of the iPad Air and what's funny is when this mini was released in 2023 it was actually more powerful than the iPad Air at the time right like that's kind of funny to me since then the iPad Air has been updated though and now comes with an M1 chip which this mini doesn't have but I do think that's fine we'll talk more about the performance later but I want to kind of cover the unique form factor experience that this Mini offers that you really can't find on any other iPad it is truly a unique experience but whether or not you want that experience is it's questionable in 2023. now what I do like about this mini is that for me I'm a Macbook guy so I'm usually carrying my MacBook Pro to get any sort of work done I just find Mac OS more pleasing to work with especially when multitasking and I like a lot of the pro applications uh that Mac OS has that just isn't available on my iPad that means if I'm leaving the house bringing the full-size iPad with me is probably a lot less likely at this point but the mini might actually accompany me on my Venture because it's so small that it can fit into any compartment in my bag that might not be big enough to carry a full-size iPad Pro and also a 14-inch MacBook Pro and the mini is so small uh if it's like winter time it could even fit into my jacket pocket I've also recently started using Apple smart folio with my mini so it's just that much easier to toss around and I really do like that kind of like book like experience I also think the mini just lends itself to be a better tablet experience because it leaves behind so many of the expectations that that we now have with these more expensive and bigger iPad Pros so while you might be frustrated about experiences like stage manager on Apple's iPad Pro you won't really feel or really need better multitasking on the mini small display and the current limitations of that multitasking system feel perfectly built and tailor-made for the smaller 8.3 inch display another important distinction is there is no SMART connector on the back yeah apple does not want you to use a keyboard with this and that means the mini is in the truest form of the iPad it is a tablet it's always ready to be picked up and used for quick bursts which is the way that I used to use my tablet or I guess my iPad before Apple started cramming so much additional functionality when they brought over keyboard and mouse support the mini isn't trying to be a laptop replacement it's just trying to be a good tablet and the mini is also the first device that I pick up whenever I want to Lounge on the couch or have my morning coffee at a table to read news stories and I could do that with one hand while still holding my coffee and you can like scroll through Twitter scroll through all the breaking Tech news and it's really helpful for that as just kind kind of like this dedicated reading device the form factor also really lends itself well to just reading in general right like if I open up the Kindle app on this it's a much better reading experience than the bigger 12.9 inch iPad which kind of just feels too big and too awkward to use especially when you're mobile and even though the 8.3 inch display might not be the best way to watch YouTube videos the iPad Mini feels kind of forward thinking with vertical videos like on Tick Tock or YouTube shorts like scrolling on the iPad Mini with one hand with the bigger display than what your phone can offer is just actually a really compelling way to watch vertical video now because of the smaller display it really can't give you that good laptop like experience but strangely enough this is still an extremely capable device Apple really future proof this thing I think almost unintentionally by putting an a15 chip in this device because if you're keeping up with the Apple chip device tracking whichever everyone does right everyone can keeps up with the latest chips from Apple well if you know your apple chips you know that the modern day iPhone 14 wanted like the flagship iPhones not not the pro but the regular 14 still uses the same chip architecture from the a15 chip it has an a15 chip inside of it and this iPad Mini despite being uh released you know when like the original iPhone 13s were around like that time period um this still has the same chip as a modern day iPhone and that is a very very good thing because even though you might think okay like this thing's so small how could it possibly be capable how can it possibly be good for higher end applications it is this thing is great at handling uh Pro level applications on the iPad like you pair this together with the second generation apple pencil and you can do a lot with this device whether that's having a more precise input method for editing photos or videos writing notes sketching out ideas with Apple's new markdown app or even using the mini as a full-blown drawing tablet um it's like it it can actually be done like it might not be the best experience because it is a small display but it is capable of doing that so it is kind of fun to carry around as like this ultimate little digital Sketchbook but I don't want to blaber the point like is this iPad Mini going to give you that laptop alternative experience where you can connect this to like a full-size keyboard and replace your existing laptop no it just isn't built for that which means that it really isn't a great choice for users that want more of a dedicated device the mini is in a lot of ways the true original vision of the iPad you you don't expect it to replace your phone you don't expect it to replace your laptop it is a third device that sits in the middle of those two devices it does some things better than a phone it does some things better than a laptop it's for things like casual web browsing viewing emails watching a video listening to music browsing through photos playing games all while giving you that gold standard iPad 10 hour battery life right like that's what this product is but let's return to the question that we asked at the start of this video is the mini iPad still worth it in 2023 does it even fit your lifestyle and the answer to that is maybe listen this device has aged well for being over a year and a half old at this point still spec wise it is holding up very nicely that's not why I wouldn't tell you to buy this device things like it being 500 for 64 gigabytes of starting storage uh and and being a device that isn't a main device something that has no hopes for replacing your laptop that is a tough sell it's it's a very expensive device for something that's going to just kind of be for more casual use in most people's use cases now my advice to you is if you are in the market for a mini is to try checking around on sites like Amazon uh as of the making of this video I found this iPad Mini for the 64 gigabytes priced at 3.99 which is a much more reasonable device especially for its age but also for this product category still even at the lower price point you really have to want this form factor and this experience of the smaller iPad for that to be truly worth the price point for a lot of users out there especially those with bigger iPhones I'm not sure how much of the mini experience is still going to be worth it to you and I'm not sure if making this video was gonna be worth it to anyone but I did because someone had to do it all right but those are just my thoughts on the iPad Mini in 2023 I still think it's worth it but I do think it's targeting at this point a very limited select user base and that might be you so if you like this video give me a like if you have an iPad Mini let me know what you think about if you plan on buying one in 2023 after all this time also let me know if this video helped you out subscribe to the
