[Music] hey everybody this calligraphy DK and today I'm going to show you exactly how to write beautiful letters on your iPad which is also known as iPad lettering I've been doing this ever since 2016 now so for about three solid years I've seen the entire growth off the iPad lettering community first hand but of course after trying to do it all by myself I initially ran into a few problems so in order to prevent that from happening to you as well I'm going to walk you through the entire process a complete beginners guide step-by-step in the next few minutes so keep on watching now before we start here's a quick explanation of what iPad lettering exactly is the term iPad lettering refers to the art of beautiful writing on your iPad just like the art of calligraphy so why does it say iPad lettering instead of iPad calligraphy well good question that's because throughout all these years iPad lettering became a sort of established term inside the community that acts as an umbrella including everything that revolves around writing beautifully on your iPad so if the interest shots weren't something you were looking for then I kindly suggest you stop watching now because this video is going to cover all of that with that in our backs let's open up procreate and here we are the glorious gallery which will hopefully be filled with all of your projects in the future you can take a closer look at some of my own personal work over here as well just to get a feel where I'm coming from a lot has happened throughout these years as you can probably tell by just looking at my gallery [Music] [Music] now if you notice here you have these four little icons to say select import photo and plus I am NOT going to cover all the settings in procreate actually I've done it already in a separate article that has almost 4,000 words so if you really want to know about the tiniest details regarding procreate and ipad lettering you can find the link down in the description in fact I'm going to link everything all the resources I used today in this video including a free appropriate brush down in the description below so you can have access to all of them in one single place so that's the reason why you will see me skipping through a bunch of settings paleri I know a lot of you are coming here from my Instagram and me explaining what the size and opacity slider does is going to be a huge waste of time for both you and me so the brush I used in the intro for raspberry is my fail to brush from my latest brush pack but for the sake of simplicity I'm going to use a standard calligraphy brush which again is free and also linked down below and let's just get a feel for it that's what I always do if I have a new brush whether it's in procreate or in real life just scribbling around see how it behaves check out the texture no actual letters yet now you can basically summarize iPad lettering and four words thin up strokes and thick down strokes going forward those two strokes will be your bread and butter and upstrokes require a less - no pressure whereas without strokes you really want to put in that weight in the early stages you want to repeat these strokes as many times as you can until you're pretty much used to the movement this is a mistake I made especially during my early practice sessions what turns out trying to write entire words or even full-on quotes was not working out too well anyway that's why I decided to make this tutorial in the first place to prevent you from repeating the same mistakes I made when I was first starting out so don't be like me another key mistake was the fact that I didn't know about the seven wonders off calligraphy to be honest I don't even know if you can really call them that this is just what I decided on my but here's what they look like so first you have the downstroke the silly guy we already met before just yeah just a downstroke then we have the under turn and over turn strokes they're complete opposites the under turn stroke starts with a thick down stroke and ends with a thin up stroke on the other hand the over turn starts with a thin up stroke and finishes with a thick down stroke once you've mastered those two the next one was super easy because the compound stroke is a combination of the under turn and over turn stroke so thin up thick down and thin up again next we have the ascending and descending loop also complete opposites and they look like this the ascending loop is a thin up then occur finishing with a thick down stroke again thin up curved round and thick down the descending loop is a thick down and again a curve to the left side and then thin up so as I said before the opposite of the ascending loop the last wonder is the oldest stroke and this is one movement thin up kerf to the left side thick down curve to the right and then finally thin up again now you may have noticed earlier some of these kind of look like letters so for example the ascending loop looks like it's part of an H and the oldest stroke could at this point be an O and that's because they are in fact what so quote-unquote wonderful about these seven strokes is that you can create almost every single letter off the lowercase alphabet with thumbs [Music] [Music] here they are again in one place this is actually a graphic included in the article and again if you're just starting out I would highly recommend you practice these strokes because they will give you a better understanding of the lowercase letters which as time goes on should be very easy to write now and as you can see here they can also differ depending on what kind of style you're going for but to go even further and maximize your efficiency can take these seven wonders and combine them with the knowledge of different letter groups letter groups categorize letters with similar traits and there are five in total we have straight letters branching letters reverse branching letters all the letters and finally diagonally letters and again these letter groups put letters with similar traits in one place so you can maximize the efficiency of your practice this graphic here will also be included for free on the website as a procreate file so changing the opacity or arranging these strokes will be super easy and intuitive and they are designed to go hand-in-hand with the custom calligraphy brush here's just an example of what you can do with it [Music] [Music] all right so let's just quickly recap what we've learned so far we've learned about - lettering as an umbrella term then we talked about the importance of thin up strokes and thick down strokes really the bread and butter of calligraphy we also learned about the seven wonders how to write them and more importantly how to combine them with different letter groups to maximize practice efficiency all of this will be your foundation and from that you can also slowly start looking into adding your own little twist to each individual letter what all of these have in common is the fact that they consist of these thin up strokes thick down strokes and of course the seven wonders we talked about and another important trait of every great calligraphy style is the overall consistency so for example these letters here are consistent in terms of size and set which becomes more obvious with guidelines now contrast here we have an example with inconsistent spacing in between the letters and also inconsistent in terms of size which doesn't really look that pleasing to the eye so another tip is to use guidelines they will help you make your letters look more consistent and they're also very useful when developing your own unique style but that's a topic for another video so consider subscribing if you want to see more content related to iPad lettering or calligraphy in general if you have any questions definitely feel free to leave a comment down below or a message me on my Instagram at calligraphy underscore DK and again don't forget to check out the description of this video because there you will find all the relevant links and resources I talked about specific settings blend modes and all that kind of stuff and the articles so it's definitely worth a read that being said thank you so much for watching I hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial and I will see you guys in the next one
