hello and welcome back to my channel today we are going to be painting this watercolor floral arrangement [Music] the watercolor brushes that i am using today are from my watercoloring ink brush pack you can check these brushes out following the link in the description if you want to follow along these techniques will be applicable to other watercolor brushes but i am going to be going into more of the specifics of these brushes we will also be using a free brush that i have available to my newsletter subscribers you could become one by signing up following the link in the description and also in the cards up here let's get into it so what i am working on here is i've pulled in my paper texture and i have added a sketch layer above my painting layer here and this has flowers that i drew using my flower builder kit i will also link that in the description and my last video i covered how to create flowers using that kit so if you haven't watched that already be sure to starting with the paper texture this canvas comes with the brush pack and there are three different paper textures and then these layers here that's a splatter option and the point of these is that you're able to mix and match to create a bunch of different textures or tweak it to your own preferences so this is the first paper texture and it's more of a just traditional watercolor paper look the second one is less textured and the third one is a larger texture and it's a little more intense so i'm gonna go with the paper one and what you can do is just check the box to turn them on and off if you have layer limits then you can also go ahead and delete what paper you're not using so once you've turned on your texture stack you can then also choose a splatter option i will drop a color in the background to show you quick what those look like so these are all set to color burn so they will show up when there's pigment underneath so it'll only show up where we paint the watercolor because we will be painting on a white background this is just for demonstration you can also adjust the opacity if you want to make it less intense so the first option the second option and the third and these are just some cool additional effects to help add to the realism i am going to turn on splatter option two for this so i'm using paper number one and splatter option two then i'm gonna change my background color back to white and i am going to duplicate my painting layer so i have three painting layers below i'm not sure exactly how many we'll be using but i want to go ahead and have a few set up and ready to go so on my first painting layer i'm going to jump right away in using let's start with the dark seep brush this is the freebie that i have available and the color palette that i'm using is the floral builder color palette which is available free to download for my newsletter subscribers as well we're gonna start in painting the first flower so i'm gonna do this this one here and decrease my brush size down to around nine percent and this brush is super watery and very pressure sensitive for both size and for pigment and so if i increase the pressure it gets really big and it has these super wet edges with that slight hard edge so that's if i press super hard and then if i use light pressure not only does the size go down but the opacity decreases as well and so you can get this full blended look as long as you aren't lifting up your pencil from the screen and then if you want to go and add more pigment i'm just increasing my pressure and if you want you can even decrease the brush size as you go to get in some finer detail here without lifting up your pencil and the smaller the brush the more smooth the edges are going to look so you can see here i just ever so slightly lifted my pencil from the screen and i can blend by using lighter pressure and this is great because i don't have to use the smudge tool i'm using it to layer a little bit more pigment here underneath the curl of the edge of this petal so just like with real watercolor we're going to be working from light to dark which means that for highlights we're just going to paint less in that area the nice thing about digital is that you really don't have to follow those rules but i want to show you how realistic these can look the goal is for a more intuitive experience that you don't have to do a bunch of crazy techniques for one thing that i really enjoy doing and i think just puts this above and beyond is leaving slight gaps on brushes that have these hard edges [Music] so again using one continuous stroke for this i've created this small small sliver of a gap and it has these hard outer edges like the pigment has dried crisper on the edges there and again i just think that that helps add to this real watercolor look i'm building up a little bit of pigment there's a few brushes that are great for this if you want to use like the wet on wet splatter even though this is more of a splatter brush if you use really light pressure and have the size decreased way down you can use this to actually just increase the pigment in a very concentrated area you can also go in and use the soft smudge on the paintbrush rather than the smudge tool and again this will just build up a bit of pigment and it has that softer wet on wet look that helps it blend in more if you want to use the rough hue shift brush this one works similarly to the dark seep it has a little bit more color variation and slightly crisper edges and then this one also has some tilt color variation so it varies in color from stroke to stroke but then also if you increase the tilt of the brush it's going to be a little more diluted and it'll give you some different color within one single stroke so the goal there is to emulate that true hand mixed paint look and then this one as well is pressure sensitive for size and opacity and more responsive than the other ones so you can see the amount of contrast in pigment then when i use less pressure here i'm able to blend it out and then this brush like most of the brushes in this set is very watery so what i mean by that is is that it will give you more wet on wet vibes when you are painting on top of continual strokes so as i layer brush strokes here you can't see the edges of the lower brushes you just see the increased intensity of pigment so what that ends up looking like is that you haven't waited for your paint to dry as you are layering these strokes [Music] if you want to have it look as though you are painting on top of already dried watercolor what you can do is work on a new layer and this will allow you to see the hard edges from underneath and layer in color that way without mixing it all together [Music] all right now i'm going to switch to yellow and i'm going to use the detail liner brush and i'm going to decrease my size down to about 13 and zoom way in and i'm just i'm still on the same layer i'm just going to draw in these center bits of the flower [Music] changing to a darker color and i'm just going to layer in some darker pigment in between to help add some dimension and this is looking a little orange but i think it'll be such a small detail it'll still look fine and what i'm really doing is just tapping a bunch of small small dots you can see i've zoomed so far in there's not a lot of room to get super fancy with this [Music] so to add in some detail i'm going to be using the diluted glaze brush and i'm working on a empty layer which i've moved above my layer that has the puddles on it and i'm changing the blend mode to multiply and now with this glaze brush this is one of the only watercolor brushes in this set that doesn't blend multiple separate strokes together the reason being for this is that you have these really nice hard edges and it's pretty light and this brush will give you those hard edges with more pressure and then you can kind of blend it out by then applying less pressure so you can see here i am applying heavier pressure because you can see the hard edges and then less pressure as i work down to the center of the flower and little things like this i'm not going to worry about it's watercolor happy accidents happen when you paint watercolor in real life and this is one of those i am decreasing the brush size to do these smaller detail areas and what you'll see too as you decrease the brush size is that the harder edge is more subtle so it's just something to keep in mind but it does give you a little more control in those tighter areas [Music] all right i'm going to move back down to my lower painting layer and we're going to move on to another flower all right i'm going to use the mid texture watercolor which is unavoidably my very favorite brush in this set and that is because it has a nice bit of edge texture but it really just floods together super nicely and i feel like i have good control over the brush so i'm just coloring in here and if you want to build up color as well you can to a certain degree it won't get all the way to full saturation but you can build up color and then flood all of those brush strokes together now this brush will not be as responsive to pressure for opacity so it won't necessarily lay down a lot more pigment when you press harder however if you slowly go around the edges without lifting up your brush you can increase the intensity and i have very light pressure here [Music] next i'm switching to this gold color for the center and decreasing my brush size for this i'm using lots of these little blobby strokes to layer in the pigment here then for these inner petal things i'm selecting this brown color and i'm working still on all the same layer for this part [Music] all right now i am going to use the smudge tool here just because i want this to be blended from the brown into the yellow and so i'm just tapping actually a bunch with the smudge tool which i have set on soft smudge [Music] all right and then i'm gonna switch to this darker color and the rough paint and blend brush i'm just going to add some texture here all right let's free hand something so i'm going to grab this brown here and go back to i'm going to go down to the smooth paint and blend brush which is something that i really like to use for stems especially i'm going to decrease my brush size down to about five percent for this and use heavy pressure so that it is very dark and pronounced along this stem then i'm going to add these little branchlets then i'm going to choose this pink and increase my brush size to about 15 percent and just draw in a bunch of little berries so this is the smoothest brush in the set you can see it has really crisp edges and is also pressure sensitive for size it also layers and builds up color nicely then i'm going to move back up to my multiply layer and i'm going to use the streaky brush pen and i'm decreasing the size to about five percent and with this darkest purple color i am going to go in and just add smallest bits of detail here i'm always so impressed by people who can paint really realistic botanicals and flowers with watercolor especially and i am not one of them i am more messy and abstracted i just don't have the skills to do those ultra real botanicals and so this is this is what you'll learn here is the more messy watercolor look [Music] now still on this multiply layer i am switching to this lighter purple that i originally drew the petals with and with the wet on wet splatter brush set to a small size i'm layering in some darker pigment variation in places along these petals now moving back down to my painting layer i'm going to switch to this soft apricot color and i'm going to use the mid texture watercolor just as with the previous flowers i'm going to fill in these petals [Music] still on the same brush and layer i'm going to select this brown color for the centers and decrease the brush size to do this next i'm switching to the rough paint and blend brush now again this brush has some similar properties to the mid texture watercolor brush but it's definitely more messy with less control it also has a little more of a color shifting attribute so especially with tilt you can see it gets warmer as the pencil is tilted and then cooler if the pencil is perpendicular and then just as with the other more watery brushes in this set it does blend out to transparency when light pressure is applied [Music] all right now we can paint some greenery i am starting with this green and i'm going to move back down to the mid texture watercolor brush now if you aren't necessarily working from a sketch these brushes are super pressure sensitive you can get really nice leaf shapes simply by using light pressure and then heavy pressure and then light pressure okay i low-key love that and want to work it in so i'm going to use the freehand selection tool this is why i love digital art you just have so much more flexibility [Music] [Music] now something fun that i really like about working mostly on the same layer for these at least for the main parts is that because these brushes are so flooded when you paint next to colors it will mix you can see here the green is mixing with the purple which really is what would happen when you paint analog with real watercolor and so i like that you can get some of that aesthetic if you want more control if you don't want that look you can simply paint on separate layers for separate colors all right to add some variation in the stems i'm going to switch to a different green for these next ones [Music] [Music] and i am free handing a couple more berries in here to make it look a little more balanced i'm not switching brushes i'm still using the mid texture watercolor for this and then i'm going to move up here to my multiply layer and use the glaze brush to add in some mess here and while i'm here i'm going to add in some mess on my leaves so i'm using the same green and really what i'm doing here is just going outside the lines to make it look like it just bled a bit beyond the bounds of what i was painting and it's funny because these are those accidents that happen in watercolor painting that you have to like intentionally do in digital [Music] so here i'm still on the multiply layer and i'm going to add this messy spillage detail still using the glaze brush on some of these petals as well [Music] now you can keep it clean from here or you can add in some of these more messy watery smudge details with me so moving back down to my main painting layer i am switching to the smudge tool and with the soft smudge brush i'm going to mix some of these points where the colors contact to blend the pigments into one another [Music] and then i'm also going to blend some of the colors outside of the lines [Music] something that i really like about this smudge brush is that you can use it as a normal blender but if you just tap with it it can smudge as though you're adding some water droplets onto wet paper so i like to use both techniques to add a cool effect [Music] okay so it might look a little weird if i remove the line work here not too bad but because this is a watercolor and ink set i'm going to turn back on my sketch layer for now and pull my third empty painting layer all the way above the other two painting layers and i'm going to switch to this darkest gray and i'm going to use the diluted ink brush to paint the line work [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign so [Music] here we go [Music] oh [Music] [Music] what are we doing [Music] [Music] okay now i'm going to hide my sketch layer and go ahead and delete it we're done with it and with my line work now i want to make it blend in with the painting more so i'm going to switch to the smudge tool and just drop some water on this this can be a great way to hide any mistakes and imperfections and you can even go in with the same black color and the diluted glaze brush the last thing that i want to show you is how to use some of these splatter brushes to add texture to your finished painting on a new layer right above the work but below the texture stack i'm going to select the watercolor texture brush which is really just a messy oversized splatter brush and then i'm choosing one of the greens that i used for the stems and i'm going to increase the brush size and stamp a couple times on top then in the layers panel i'm tapping on the layer to change the blend mode to color burn and there you can see the subtle difference it makes it add some nice color variation as well as watercolor texture another way that you can use these splatter brushes is to add a new layer and use colors from the painting to add splatter drops of paint all over same as before i'm just tapping a few times if you don't love how the splatter is layered on top of the flowers you can move the splatter layer to the bottom of the stack and that will make it a little more subtle to remove the overlap completely you can use two fingers to press and hold on the main painting layer to select the layer contents and then with that selection live you can move down to the splatter layer and use the eraser tool to remove any splatters within the bounds of the selection and that will just clean it up nicely and that's it that's the finished piece thank you so much for watching i hope this was helpful hopefully you learned something if you like videos like this where i walk through the brushes a little more slowly and show you a wider variety let me know i always want to make what you are interested in everything that i used to make this is in the description below so definitely check that out if you are one of the only people watching all the way to this point i just want to say thank you so much for supporting me by giving me your time and making art with me that just means the world to me thank you again for watching and i will see you in the next one
