They're accused of leading a doomsday cold beer accused of conspiring to murder 3 people they are accused of funding their love affair with insurance money and stolen Social Security payments Lori and Chad daybell are married. >> Their prior spouses are dead and her children. >> Murdered and buried in. >> Their yard it's a crime prosecutors say was fueled by sex money and power the power coming from their ability to convince their followers that the world was ending and dark spirits. Were taking over people's bodies bodies which needed to be killed Lori has already been convicted of murdering her children and conspiring to murder Chad's first wife Tammy and now it's chads turned to face a jury tonight we will take a close look at his defense first his relationship with Laurie was she the one who pursued him was she the one manipulating her brother Alex Cox to commit murder so she could get what she wanted and what about the death of Chad's wife Tammy was it murder or something else lori's other brother joins us live tonight with his insight into his family. The murders and Chad's trial as we continue our investigation of the doomsday couple Chad and Lori daybell. >> Anthony politic and thank you for joining us here on closing arguments day one and a big. >> Big trial. The trial of Chad daybell the so-called doomsday prophet. We already covered the trial of his wife Lori daybell and one thing was clear. One thing was super clear during that trial she is loyal to the prophet. She loves cheh she would know never ever. On her husband. No way not having. At one point during her trial when her lawyer. When her lawyer said something negative about Chad daybell's writings. She was fuming mad. Don't attorney. Her loyalty will be there till the end of time. Now today is day one of the profits trial had already. Pointing the finger at Lurie. Point the finger Lori this is not going to be a case like the last one this will not be a trial like the last one. Chad day Bell does not want to stay in prison. Chad daybell does not want to go to death row. And Chad day Bell is pointing the finger at his own wife. The woman who is 1000% loyal to him and it was clear from opening statements today where this defense is going. And they're going straight at convicted. Murderer Lori daybell. But Chad has more than one finger these point another finger at his brother-in-law. His dead brother in law Alex Cox, the one who passed away on the toilet. Pointing a finger at him and his relationship with his wife. It's those 2. Those 2 people. How are the ones you need to look at those 2 are the ones who started this whole thing. Lori's obsessed lori's manipulative. And Alex Cox does what ever his sister wants. That was clear today this is going to be a different trial folks way different. Lori had great lawyers but I Lori wasn't letting her lawyers really defend her the way. >> They wanted to defend her the way that was obvious for them to defend her because of that loyalty that is not happening here. So tonight on this program we're going to have some inside information. About this family from members of this family. Lori in Alex's brother Lauren Alex's uncle will join us live. Their insight into these to their relationship and what happened. And also to get some insight into where did this come from. Where on earth did all of this come from. But before we do any of that folks it was day one opening statements witnesses taking the stand in court TV crime and justice correspondent Matt Johnson joining us live tonight where it's all happening Boise, Idaho at great to see you. Big big day today. So this is the way I want to do it. We're going to kind of get you give me the 3 biggest things that happened today from your perspective. What do you have for number one. >> And then a nice to see your number one is the fact that there was a bombshell here in Boise and this courthouse here behind me when we learned, but the defense is going to be pointing the finger at Lori and her brother Alex and they are putting on a defense and they are also going to be calling several witnesses so here's where we are with they call her a black widow vixen who seduced and influence Chad influenced her brother Alex Cox who would do anything for her and pretty Tech to the goddess, the defense bringing up Alex Cox tased her 3rd husband and then shot and killed her 4th husband as we know Charles Vallow now the defense also talking about the fact that Chad daybell whose at this defense table he's not a suspect in Chandler area, Arizona where Lori will be on trial in Maricopa County come this fall the inning. >> It's a different trial. It's a different black widow vixen how about that OK what do you have for number 2 today at a boys. >> Well it was a tough day for the family, so I sat in the gallery near Tammy daybell's aunt Vicki and she was seated in between Larry and Kay Woodcock they were comforting each other they were holding hands because again these were tough statements and it really scrapes off the scab that they have been dealing with for the past for almost 5 years now waiting for justice I met up with her outside the courthouse here, here's what she shared with us. >> I know that today was probably a little bit So you wiping away a tear how you holding up. >> Yeah, I'm I'm doing OK, you know it comes in waves and it's the kind of thing that you don't know what is going to come and then sometimes you just feel a little tear coming down you don't even realize that it's there it's just you know. >> Sounds like they're going to put on a defense this time around we didn't see that with lori's case your thoughts. >> Yeah, I was a little bit surprised I caught a little bit of a her brothers podcast lasting was a couple weeks ago, he said that. >> If they would if they were going to throw a lorry under the bus yes, and I felt like that was kind of heading that way and he said, but that was. >> Lori where she's at that she would just think it was his lawyer and that it wasn't Chad. >> Vicki planning to be here each and every day along with the wood Cox they say that this is a long time coming but they owe it to their family members the victims. >> You know when you think about the other difference in this case, the first trial, the ultimate the trail was a mother murdering her children. In this case, the the pig trail is a husband accused of murdering his wife and the mother of his children. >> Wow okay, what do for number 00:00AM tonight, Matt. >> Number 3 Vinnie we are seeing media from around the country national median of course all of the locals that have been covering this since the beginning like we have here at Court TV. And we're also seeing you know like last year a lot of the trial watchers lining up here at the ADA County Courthouse the capital city of Boise in the early morning hours just to get a seat inside the courtroom, here's what the first person in line told me. >> Why be here that yes so I have been following it a time that is an interesting case, I'm I happen to be in town taking a break. And so I just wanted to come to opening trials to hear really what that is pence to say I feel like the prosecution it might be like a repeat of the Lori Vallow trial that I think that hearing what John Pryor is putting out there is going to be super interesting. So that's why I'm here this morning. >> Thank you. >> And you know it's pretty interesting to me because I'm seeing a lot of the court watchers that we saw last year and we spoke with you know a lot of these people are driving from other parts of the Pacific Northwest up to 5 hours just to get here they're invested like the rest of us because remember it all started with where the children and that got us so many people's hearts. >> Yeah, it was amazing just to see. >> How this story began and start as a local story a child is missing. Grandparents are looking for their grandson. And as each development came to light. It may just scratch your head and wonder, wow and then wow and it just kept coming and now finally Chad day Bell in court. Cameras will see the images will hear the testimony of course we'll get all of behind this scenes in the stuff that the cameras don't show from Matt Johnson Court TV crime and justice correspondent Matt thanks so much we'll speak again too tomorrow and the next day and the next day and the next day as this trial continues, thank you so much. I want to bring in our first special guest, a joining us Lori Vallow daybell's uncle Rex Connor who along with lori's brother Adam will be joining us soon has written the book lori's lies and family lies and they have started a podcast called tylee and jj's silver Rex thanks so much for joining great to see you tonight. So you know we listen to the opening statements today. And lorries referred to as the black widow vixen. She has a history. A lot of husbands so from your perspective, it is a member the family when she went from husband, the husband, the husband to has been to husband. What was the chatter in the family about what was going on with Larry. >> That shatters just poor decision. >> And as it is. >> You know any people that end dissolving their marriage a lot of that though we look at a lot of as being poor decision-making and so there is nothing beyond that was Lori that that concerned us until Joe Ryan was killed. That started. Started really a division in the family. >> It explained that a little bit. >> The family protective Lori her mom and her sister famously went on to the very end. To this and more when the children were missing, but that division started earlier. Some people felt that there's more to it than just what Laurie was saying and other members of the family were descending laurean but completely into her. So her stories. >> The number of marriages, right and you know it happens it's not super. >> Common though Deb one then another then. >> Was was this a case where she would meet someone in very quickly. Fall in love where there are allegations of infidelity with any of the other. Husbands like we know that she cheated on Charles who are looking at right here Charles Vallow who was shot by nephew Alex. We know she cheated on him but were there other instances where she where there was infidelity. >> Not that I'm aware of the first 2 husbands, I think we're just as you described a quick marriages got into it sound their mistakes. Got out of it I don't know if there's infidelity and Laura teesside I know the second husband was was a and say fall. I say I know that I don't really know anything anymore after this historic rights program. >> And come out apparently not a lorry side of that port >> and then vigil for summer Joe Ryan was very contentious a lot of this we're getting information just from Lori my sister and frankly I was on team laureate that time and so Charles was shot toward till actually told Lori started to solving that marriage isn't talking about why. It sounded so eerily similar. Her marriage with Joe Ryan I started doing my own my own. >> The gating of that and some other members of the family did too and that's what started the rift in the family. >> I want to play a little bit of John priors opening statement where here he's talking about all these marriages and then the meeting of of Lori and shot. >> Is there are ways to do is trying to promote its books made it out there. And this beautiful a stunningly. The more it all comes up. And she started getting along touch. And she personally. She encouraged to your testimony that you know so far is J. Well it was and so help and trying to sell some of these books. She obviously had an interest in me she felt the team's this. This poll showing up. Well marry her first cousin. You just leave us. And they're just very short lives. Very short lived. She had an area as the number 2 a few years later. Very short-lived marriage. We're going to fast forward in 2019. Lori I was still married to prosecuted training mission is yes chatting with that point of aging Russ said we started to have communications and board now. And yes also charted a new pope relationship. 2019 for rich, yes, she was engaging in stations. He was engaging in. Contact with her all the things that Joe. Boston you're talking long term Chad daybell 21 years of Sunday action this Texas. And just when you about this fuel and emissions will then very sexual person and Erin age. And she knows how to get what she wants. And she will do she added you know that uh unfortunately ship you know to Chad sold all AG. >> We have another guest joining us Lori Vallow daybell's brother, Adam Cox also joining us out of great to see Rex is still with us Rex Connor. Lori's uncle, your uncle to Let me ask you out of very sexual and mean it manipulative. Is that your sister Lori was that your sister Lori. >> Was that your sister I mean I don't know all the details of lori's but you know she definitely is a completely different person that she growing up and even as a as an adult so should never manipulated me. She's helped me several in my life. She did go through a. >> Turmoil in her life where you know I feel like she should change so. >> That's that's all I can really tell you about the. >> She pursued check that's what the defense is saying a bright child is just due to sign books talking to people about the end of times and in comes the blonde bombshell with the blue lies she sets are site on our target and she goes after him is that your sister Adam. >> What a target he know actually lori's had several guys come down her so that doesn't really seem like. What you would Could have happened but again I feel like Lori was already you know going a path of trying to predict into the world and all these other you know things I wanted to have. You know near-death experiences and then when she met shad and shad have all those things. Supposedly near-death experiences and claim that he was this God and all the stuff that he that the field or head then I think she was she was on board on that. You know he told her that they were married in other worlds that you know any you know told that other women had sex with other women who use that on on several women. So it's just odd that he would just point out or that their defense will be saying that Lori did that one shot is using the same lines to pick of women and have sex with them like when when Julie rose on another show and she talked about that. Melanie give in so you know it's if the shots trying to play in us that he's not. >> Adam Cox Rex Connor staying with us when we come back we'll talk Lori all right and we'll talk about Alex lori's brother Adam's brother and wreck says other nephew plus coming up next hour. >> In Waukesha Wisconsin, the next chapter of the infamous slender man stabbing 2 12 year-old girls lured their friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times she survived both girls were determined to be legally insane. One was released in 2021. Now the one who had the knife in her and is back in court trying to get set free from a mental institution. >> Is she capable of manipulating manufacturing. Circumstances. Police herself in the position of schools, the will of the people I keep thinking of that statement we'll pull all of the people some of the time some of the >> stocks. House talks. You respect checked. I was taught swimming anything and everything. To the system or whatever shorten that >> The relationship between Lori daybell and her brother Alex Cox or is going to be a big part of the trial a big part of Chad daybell's defense pointing his fingers at them. Right away from and self and towards them away take a listen to this I always find this clip fastening Alex Cox doing some standup and joking about what he did. 2 lorries prior has been not the husband that he shot and killed Charles Vallow but the one before that. >> Had something to use the right thing to so >> it seems to have some stage presence there right. Let's bring back in our guests Rex Connor Adam Cox lori's uncle. And Adam is lori's brother. They're also the uncle and brother of Alex Cox. And they have a podcast tylee and JJ silver lining things great insight and their book lori's lies and family ties. All right so I know your sister I think was misses Texas he was in the pageant there did very well. I think you career in broadcasting as well was your brother like a performer to Alex. >> Well you know Alex I think have the most talent, he just didn't have the ambition to do the things that he should have done. But he's great with impressions. >> And you know. >> Not so great, I mean he wanted to do stand-up but he really didn't want to do it. I think the way he just lacked in wanting to do to put the work in to do it to be honest with you. But yes he was talented and he had a lot yeah he made a lot of people laugh a lot of the Times yeah he had a great sense of humor. >> And you know we think about what transpired here like it. >> Seems from some of the evidence I've seen that Rex becomes sort of like the hit man for this this cold that Chad and Lori of have created. I mean it's it's bizarre what are your thoughts Rex about your nephew Alex and his relationship with Lori. >> Yeah that is strange I believe that's true they became in effect a hit man. It's not like he's protective orders, whole lives, it's not like they had that relationship their whole life. I think it intensified when again with the Joe Ryan situation, he decided hey I'm gonna step up >> The defender here, but it really took root 20. Conferred and it was like a religious conversion is like one day he was laughing at it and the next stay here to listen to the right podcast did the right things. Emotionally or spiritually. Whatever dad and he was converted and when it got converted he was in. >> The whole hog and so no they they both Chad and Lori knew how to and they did it very well, and I'm not saying they today and angel in tournament foot double that they knew out push the right buttons in get him to do what they wanted him to do. >> Adam how would you describe the relationship between your your brother and your sister because and we've heard this interview that was done with your brothers acso described a very strange bizarre. They were sort of like play acting like they were engaging in some sexual contact. They had all their clothes on but it's like in front of everybody, what was going on between those 2. >> Well you know your rights and I talk about this we did 2 podcast on just Alex just because we just it's it's hard to imagine that he went off this deep in with with them, but as far as Alex goes. You know he's a as you heard standup comedian what's to Joe lot of his jokes are inappropriate which you know a lot of people you know if you. Are are offended by things that are inappropriate. Then you would be offended by that but joking around all the time so I I've never seen anything with you with Lori and Alex that was you know out of the thing would be like oh my gosh that's shocking so but did Alex cool, you know was he. It appropriate as far as trying to do some of his humor or make people laugh. Yes, a lot of comics are. But as far as laureano says relationship Lori was never. >> Closed Alex the whole the whole time we were growing up or even after that. But really just started like Rex said you know Lurie said that Joe molested her kids and wanted somebody to do something about and Alex was the one that says OK I'm going to do something about it because this can you know have that or whatever whatever he decided to do. And that's where I think they started being closer but even the it wasn't like Lori would call Alex and talk to him all the time we're headed close relationship with him. It just seemed like what's Lori started having people read the books and watched the podcast that she wanted people to read and watch. She asked me several times to read the whatever the book the glory working or whatever the book is. I was like I'm not reading it and go to these meetings I said look I'm not into them never going to do that. Well Alex of unfortunately did do that and he got he got hooked into it. So that's where their relations started to be closed. So they were never really or anything leds in life inappropriate as far as that goes I just I never saw anything like that. >> Let me ask Adam went so when your brother shooting kills your sister's husband Charles. Did they call you and tell you what happened. >> I I obviously was the person that was outside the family, nobody wanted to talk to me or tell me anything. Charles was dead for 3 days before I even found out and to me those are all red flags. Why didn't anybody tell people if it was just an accident or if it was self protection or whatever the excuse that laureano is whatever stories they came up with to my family or to other people. >> Why in the world would mute tell people why would you. >> I didn't want Lori lying about how Charles died to everybody something different. I mean there's so many red flags about it just really irritated me and made me mad. That you know nobody told us anything told me anything so yeah I was and that was a hard that was a hard pill to swallow. >> All right our guests are staying with us we appreciate all your time tonight. Incredible insight into all this. When we come back we're going to talk about the death of Tammy daybell. Try to understand how this is going to play out in this trial because it looks like the defense is saying. >> Specialist shelters, what So much well and a game. And this is not some sort of. >> I've always wondered. I've always wondered if you got on the witness stand and I and I was cross examining he was the prosecutor out asking checked, you're always talking about how you always knew Tami would die young and you're telling people did you ever tell her. Did you ever tell her. Take a listen here because. A big difference in this case and the first cases this one to be a lot of focus on the murder of Tammy Dave Bell and that's really where this book trail is right the or a husband of years raised 5 kids together as the one accused of the murder here. Let's take a listen to what John Pryor had to say about that in his opening statement today. >> In the years to really. Not to worry and he's a forensic pathologist. She's and she's going to talk a little bit about certain stance surrounding San Diego. And what I can re just going to say is that there's no indication that this is you also or any other time and that the only conclusion she thought it was you can determine the cause of death was. There's no way to teach children. Danielle was very you're just thinking about that. Within a short time later. Police officers showed up and they don't her body after she didn't marry. She was laid to rest and then the change in you have Salman and 4. Whatever they want. And what you're going to find is based on that doctor waiting says it can be charted will cost us. You hear testimony from the data on children. The chain sells. their mother's House rules. They're going to talk about the others treatments that you use. Or was she put different folks, the And that the mother was suffering from that there was something from a number of ballot. These and she refused to go see a doctor. >> It wasn't him or is that something else that is just wasn't a murder. Still with me Lori daybell's onto Rex Connor and her brother, Adam Cox also joining us right now board certified forensic pathologist doctor pre of energy. Doctor better J. This was a case where the victim who's body was Exuma 2 months later, and the defense is saying oh no it was something else that happened you're either natural causes or something related to these medicinal treatments. What are the limitations on autopsy that are done 2 months after the fact can you do a toxicology if there's some medicine or something in your body that may cause something would that would you be able to tell 2 months later. >> You know you can't deny that 2 months is a long time. I don't know the condition of her body how well she was embalmed. Any injuries should still be visible. OK so I hear you obviously don't have the report, but I'm very curious to see what. Great and said I don't know her and her. I don't think they would go forward with the case without a more definitive. >> Well what is your knee and second autopsy, they're saying us 60 a. And there's some bruising looking like she was risk strained, but the defense has a different perspective on all of this so are there things that they're going to be able to argue or an expert would say listen. This is done 2 months later, we don't know this we don't know that there for something else is possible here. >> Anytime you're facing a death a million things are possible right but we have to look at the circumstances. I don't think any of these I don't know what they are the top wild or whatnot. I don't think that negates the fact that she sadly die and what's reported he was trying to expedite her burial and in my experience I worked with a zoom bodies that doesn't happen, nilly you have to have a legal process us to really get someone a zoom have enough suspicion to do so toxicology can be very important obviously something could be limited but I think they're still going to try and see if there is metabolites of anything. That can be good to get active. Still see injuries that their their bruising bleeding inside those happened while some of the law I'm not dead and they don't appear to months later. >> Okay wrecks and Adam the other thing that is stuck in my mind from the beginning because I don't believe in coincidences necessarily. The day they announced that she's being and soon it is the day that your brother Alex dies. Like alone on the toilet in the bathroom. Let me ask you to Rex you go first but I want both of you to give me your answers you think that Alex was murdered. >> We go back and forth and the only 2 options are his murder are already started realizing what was going took his own life. >> It's so neither one would would surprise me. >> I can't remember which one I'm leaning toward right now because it goes back and forth and will never goes we may never know for sure. >> But it wasn't just was yeah, Adam you great. >> no way. >> I think we've lost Adam's connection doctor pre of do we have her we did right idea, yeah, okay, yes on issues like that. Per second. Now. One someone just dies right and it's a Alex was not all that it was in his 40's. Dies how definitive is that it how difficult would be the pick up if you're not looking for poison if you're not looking for something like that is it possible that it would be under the radar and could be missed. >> So you know I we we we don't do the million dollar work on every case you have to. You're in you know exam by or investigation right because the resources are limited and it's just not. >> Fruitful. >> So if you see a pulmonary embolism and it's a sad and at that complete the picture now. Obviously hindsight 2020. This case obviously as so meant much complexity now. It raises other questions was there something along with. Andrea and Bill is on that put of. Taking his life. >> Again pointed as it seemed too convenient here. Yeah. >> The timing of all that just makes no sense to >> and I just wanted to training about Tammy I mean it's very usual for 49 year-old who was. And not under going OT. The initial window at the initial investigation, even if he's healthy put on well wasn't pursued, I'm 45 and God forbid in 4 years if something happens to me. I hope my family would want more answers and the police are the community, you know so. I just think it's she's not all that all she's 49 what I think 4950 run every GS wasn't in that light advanced Grandma states does that make sense. He's active. He's working obviously very smart running a business and then suddenly he die I don't see why he didn't have top She looks relatively help the an active and I don't mind or say where she was. >> I mean she was training for lead to some sort of a competition marathon right. >> to me that's where are the autopsy comes really into play you know what happened the Seminole and so that we need to provide for a fact Ali and some and then turns around and says oh no no let expedite her burial that should raise red flags right there. >> Yeah all he was in a rush. He was in a rush. Well thank you so much doctor priebe energy for joining us wrecked car great to see you
