the associate consultant role at Bane's is very difficult to describe because really it changes everyday there are some days where you'll be providing analytical horsepower to the team to help them crunch through a large data source the next day you could be collaborating with clients to decide the best way to communicate findings within the organization the day after that you might be interviewing an advisor with 30 years experience in a very niche field the main reason why I decided to pursue a career in consulting is really for the problem-solving element very interestingly in my first year in university I actually took part in a Bain and Cole case competition that give me a brief understanding of what consulting is really about I chose to come into consulting because I was sort of looking at my career options and trying to figure out you know what I wanted to do I didn't feel like I had a great idea of a specific type of industry that I wanted to work in or a specific function that I wanted to do coming to consulting really allows you to keep the flexibility in terms of your career while still allowing you to really progress and push yourself forward it is something that not only and tells problem solving but it also involves a lot of client interaction and working with different clients to solve their real-world business problems and it goes beyond just pen and paper slide decks that we are passing on to the clients by also high impact solutions that are really changing the client's businesses on a daily basis you're always expected to sort of bubble up those results from your specific work to the broader sort of context of the case one of my favorite cases at vane was working in the healthcare industry we were helping a private equity firm decide if they wanted to buy an asset it was just extremely topical and relevant work the time that we were doing this was during January February of 2017 when there is a new administration change that could potentially bring a lot of changes to the healthcare industry so was really awesome to get on a phone with some of the industry leaders and talk about how potential repeal no matter what that looked like could impact these businesses I think the most enjoyable period of time that I've spent so far at Bain was probably the six months I did working in our private equity ring-fence a beam team will start a new case on a Monday morning looking at a market or an industry that they might be very unfamiliar with within a very short space of time that fainting we'll be able to tell you how that market works and give a strong hypothesis on who wins and loses in that market how fast it's growing where the growth is coming from where the threats might be in the future for that market there are a number of trainings that you'll do over your time at Bain the first is called associate consultant training which takes place in either Virginia or in Cape Cod not only do you hone and build the skills that you'll need to be successful at Bain and beyond but like all Bay in trainings it provides the unique opportunity to spend time with like-minded people like-minded colleagues from across the globe one thing that I never expected to learn was on how much client interaction we have and how much co-creation we do with the client on a daily basis one of the things that I recommend to everyone thinking about consulting is to go to the information sessions get to know people there find out what these companies are like and what type of work that you'd be doing if I know that this really is the right fit for you I recall that my team featured represents dis from as far as Blane azari's Shanghai New York it was really incredible to see that even in parts of the world where the day-to-day and professional culture is a little bit different the supportive and the collaborative culture at Bain continues to thrive we have a really diverse office we have people who come from all walks of life different backgrounds so really be yourself and ask yourself during the interview whether you see being as a right fit for you and whether you feel that this could be a career for you in the long term practice your case studies live with another person learning from the internet and from books is a great way to build a base level of understanding of how the process works and expose yourself to a few examples but it can never prepare you for thinking on your feet in the way that you'll need to in your interview and indeed in the associate consultant role at Bain at the end of the day we're trying to hire people who are passionate about the work that they're doing finding out if that's right for you is an important piece of the recruiting process I think it's easy to assume that at Bain we spend our time working and do very little else but I for example like to keep very active outside of work I like to run whether it's rain sleet or snow I play hockey and a local club I enjoy traveling at weekends and one thing that you certainly gain when you join Bain is a cohort of peers and friends who are always looking to explore further and push beyond their immediate horizons
