so friends drop this off to me the other day this is a 25,000 BTU window unit and it was getting thrown away but instead who saved it and brought it over to me knowing just how hot my shopkins during these summer months the only problem is a does not fit in the one and only window that my shop has so today I will be cutting in a new hole in my shop and I'm somewhere between nervous and really excited I started by clearing out a spot I took down my head unit and then moved my shelf up by about 8 inches I first measured the cage and then I took those measurements and transferred them to the wall using a sharpie and a level I used a half inch drill bit to make a hole in each one four corners and then used a circular saw to make the cut I would start off with the nose the deck touching the wall but not the blade get the blade going and then slowly plunge it into the wall and then just follow the line in order to finish the cut at this point my dad is only set to half an inch because I wasn't sure if there was any metal or wiring behind this wall you're ripping these off with your hands just be mindful of nails flat bar certainly does come in handy oh and this I couldn't resist unknown I realized I needed to extend my hole over to the next stud so I just repeated the steps until I opened it up a little bit more see I was going to try what they call the surgical method but I thought I would stick with the more beginner route so yet again the next morning I decided to open up a hole a little bit larger took out the insulation using a box blade in order to separate it from the top and bottom then I stuck a six-inch blade in my sawzall and started to cut the studs for some reason there's two studs joined over here and they were giving me a little trouble but nothing a little beating on and a little pride on couldn't solve okay now what I'm doing is making the header and since I want this to be as strong as possible I made mine out of two two by sixes instead of two by fours and then I picked up some half inch material to sandwich in between it and now all to join it all I'm going to be putting in four rows of three screws each on both sides so total I'll have twenty four screws holding this assembly together and just in case you're not familiar with one assembly looks this way pretend that this is the stud that we're going to be putting this header up against since this is three and a half inches I'm just building this up to match this step note that I'm using an impact here will definitely save you some work wonderful okay so this is roughly how my header will look once I put it in place now what I need to do is put in what they call two Jack studs and a king stud is just a stud that runs all the way from the bottom to the top of the wall and so this stud in this guide are my king status now a jack stud will run from the bottom but then it will come up here and support this putter and so I need to make two I need to make one for the left and one for the right since I need these studs making contact with ground I took out the insulation from those two sections but when I try to put the stud in the wall I realized I wasn't going to be able to so I removed my French cleat system and then just pulled a section of a wall off was able to put the stud in its place and then used screws in order to attach it to the king stud that was really easy and instead of trying to get my impact in here I'm thinking about taking this off ripping down the wall taking this panel off and repeating the steps over here so I think this what I'm gonna do to attach the header I actually used the removable portion of my Craig pocket jig in order to make three pocket holes on the sides and attached it that way that way I would not have to go in and add an angle on those two by fours I also did the same on the two studs that were located in the center of that header then I went ahead and used three screws going in at an angle on both the left and right side in order to attach it to the king studs okay so now I'm going to be putting in what they call the stud and that is the one that just goes from the bottom up here that it's going to be supporting the horizontal SIL that I'm gonna get putting in place at least it's called the silhouette number it's a window installed I'm assuming that it's the same for an AC so I'm going to be putting in one over here on the left and also over here on the right same method as before with the Jack studs about 2 2 screws every 12 inches or so before making the hole in the back I grabbed my tape measure and lined out exactly where I needed my hole to be then use a one-inch paddle bit to make a hole on the bottom right hand corner and then came back with my sawzall and started making the cuts I'll tell you what whoever built this barn built it well yeah half-inch plywood and then this half-inch like cement siding I came back with a belt sander just to smooth things out some then I put the cage in its place and started attaching it I didn't like how the pre-made holes lined up so I used a bit in order to make my own holes at this point I had three men standing around observing so I decided to ask them to do the heavy lifting now it was just a matter of me nailing back in the panels that I cut previously then also cut some new panels to patch up the wall okay so even though this is kind of an eyesore I am so happy one to have a scene in my shell but also the build I learned so much in this bill researching it and then actually doing it and so I thought I feel accomplished this is a really fun thing to learn um but yeah my original plan was to trim all of this out and so I actually dug into the project and realized how big I'll gonna have to cut my hole so if you're in construction or know of some way that I can kind of pretty this up a little bit please leave me something below because I can see this bothering me but regardless I'm one hot AC in my shop I'm glad that I did this project and I hope that you all learn something along the way anyways y'all have a good one
