this is shawn and we are on a job today in jamestown north carolina so what we've got going on here is this is a brand new driveway and for the last year or so the water just completely shoots underneath the dr the door here and so i was actually out here about a year ago and talked to the homeowner about doing a channel drain across here and he just recently contacted me back after we had some really heavy rains he had put some of those water socks or something across there to try to damn it and they did a couple other things but it's just not really working so we're going to put a channel drain in here and we're going to catch this gutter this gutter really has no place to go so the yard slopes down here slopes down here so this gutter is a big problem right here for one thing and so we just want to get that water out of here so we're going to catch that through the channel drain and we're going to go across through here we're going to catch this gutter and that's just a hose that was right there we're going to grab this gutter here since we're going by it and we're going to trench across here we're going to go under the patio or the pavers i should say and down around this corner i'm going to grab this gutter while we're here and we're going to trench across here we got great fall going down and they have this drain i don't know if you could call this a drainage basin but they've called the city a few times but this is where our outfall is going to be and so hopefully the city will fix that it's quite dangerous right there and eroding and falling falling in there but that's what we're working on today so i wanted to show you i recently picked up this concrete saw this is an 18 inch and this had been scrapped at the recycling the metal recycling place and the guy kept it aside posted it for sale said he didn't know if it run or not it ran and i got it and i had to clean the gas tank out i had to put a new carb on it you can see that new car about to do a couple other things it was bent i had to cut it and re-weld some stuff down there to get it straightened out a little bit but i'm hoping this will make quick work of this concrete [Music] we got this channel cut and now we're breaking it into manageable pieces with a jackhammer [Music] yeah that's exactly what they're supposed to do hey honestly let me get these out you just closed my gap up so let me get these out i think i need some room then we use here jack to open it back up [Music] [Music] so uh okay just point cool deal [Music] i wanted to talk a little bit about these channel drains that we use this is the 5 inch pro series channel drain kit and the reason i use this one this is by far the most expensive one they sell them in 10 foot sections these are 40 inches but the reason i use this one is flow this one has the most volume of any of the channel drains that i've seen this one has by far the largest volume that it can carry and so you can get ones with metal grates and everything but they're just they're a lot smaller and narrower so you can't fit your fist in there like that and so even though these are quite expensive they will allow the most flow through them and so when you get this thing it comes with this little kit here this is a a uh end piece this is a piece end piece or you can knock that out and then there's a bushing and so here you can see i have knocked that piece out and you take the bushing here you put this thick side up and then you have a special fitting here that goes from i think it goes from thin wall pvc to thick wall pvc i think is what it officially is that'll go in there like that and then that will get us to our regular schedule 40 pvc so that's going to go right here and we're going to be heading on we're also going to have one of these as an input because we're going to catch the gutter over here into the channel drain and so that'll help it flow that'll help keep any debris out of it and whatnot so that's what's up with the channel drains we're making pretty good progress here we got this gutter caught and it was it was putting this this fitting right here in a weird bind so we put a furnco on there and that that'll just ease some of the tension in there and once we get the whole thing set in concrete nobody's gonna care about it but for now that'll help to help us get where we want it so we've got some gravel in the bottom of this trench and we tamp that down with our maul right there and this is going to be fairly level here but you can see it's got just a tiny bit of fall on it and so the idea here is the water coming off that gutter will help to push anything out and it does have a tiny tiny bit of fall now that's got a little bit more fall to it right there and we kind of we started kind of high on this side and so we're getting we're kind of leveling out as we go across here and so it just involves pulling it out and putting more gravel in and putting it back in and putting a level on it and seeing where you're at so you get it right so we're gonna fuss with this for a while and then get some concrete rolling in here [Music] do [Music] we just finished setting our channel drain and of course we had to pull it out and reset it several times to make sure our level was looking good and now we're applying some packing tape to cover up the actual grate part of it while we pour the concrete so this is the concrete that i like to use for all my concrete projects pro finish high strength this is a lot more expensive than the stuff that they have pallets and pallets of but what it does is it has finer gravel in it and so it it just settles better i think and it's extra strong so superior finishing characteristics get stronger faster achieves 5000 psi ideal for winter use so it's the best concrete you can get [Music] [Music] is yeah if you have a little tiny one you can we can do that i wanted to show you real quickly what this is looking like so everything's got really good fall to that's it almost a full bubble right there so we're heading downhill very aggressively here so any water that ends up in the channel drain there it's just gonna it's gonna have a nice easy elite path of least resistance by coming down here and then coming straight down so we got three quarters of a bubble there just heading on down the way so we're about to get this part covered up we're getting this pipe covered back up as we're heading on down the line so from here we do a couple of 45s get across underneath this these pavers and we should be rolling on down to the drainage basin we're going to catch this gutter too here we're going to have to straighten out our trench a little bit but uh that shouldn't be too bad with a flat shovel yeah we may have to hose it off i'm not sure so i'm just getting this pipe fitted up underneath this these pavers and i wanted you to take a look [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so that gutter is not it's clogged right there it needs some tension so that's a big problem that we've got see that and i talk to my customers about these gutters the gutters are the first line of defense against flooding so that gutter needs immediate attention because that gutter is collecting the water but it's not sending it into our system okay those gutters on the back are not working either see all that water flowing off of there so they either need to be cleaned out or raised up see how steep the roof is right there so they've got some issues here with the gutters which we should be able to correct but there's our system and that's a lot of water being delivered down here
