[Music] do [Music] unlike with traditional cabinets where you actually fasten through the back of the cabinet into the wall to get it to hold on ikea system they use a bracket and rail based on how big your kitchen is the program will actually figure out how many of these you need they come in seven foot sections so you'll actually have to cut these to fit your specific kitchen [Music] so [Music] to determine how high we need to place our rail you see they give you the different heights of the cabinets if you have an 80 inch tall 30 inch or 90 inch and our upper cabinets will be at the 80 inch height at their top because we're not going all the way to the ceiling with ours so we use this measurement and it shows you need to put the bottom of your rail at 82 and 3 16. so we just need to measure up 82 and 3 16 and get us a level line and not that it's going to be an issue for us because we're not putting our cabinets all the way up to the ceiling but ikea gives you a warning that's always bothered me they tell you to get leave a minimum distance between the top of your rail and the ceiling and they give that distance at 6 8. it's just i they didn't reduce that fraction i just always wondered how that made it on to these instructions and no one caught it anyway wherever possible i try to attach these to the wall into a stud because you want to get as much strength out of this bracket as possible because it's holding the weight of the cabinet up not just the cabinet but everything that you put in the cabinet so anytime out here at the end if we don't have a good stud to attach it to i'm going to be using these toggle bolts and each one of these is supposed to have a shear strength of 95 pounds [Music] if you've never used these toggle bolts before it's pretty simple it's got the spring loaded clamp that goes on to the bolt let's say this is the drywall as you push it through the drywall once it gets to the other side the spring opens up and then it can't pull itself back out and then as you just screw it in it'll hold itself against the drywall [Music] [Applause] [Music] to me this is the hands-down best part of ikea cabinets over traditional cabinets if you've ever hung traditional cabinets you know what i'm talking about it's cumbersome it's hard to get them level you have to have two people there usually with these once you get that rail level just watch how easy this is [Music] and that's it there's a couple of these little plastic pieces that lock the cabinet into place other than that this is it i mean it's held there by that rail right now and that is just so much easier than hanging traditional cabinets [Music] now we just need to mark for a level line for the bottom rail and you can see this one will be at 32 and 3 16 to the bottom of the rail [Music] i know there's a dishwasher to the left of the sink and there's only a 12-inch cabinet here at the end so i really only need a 12-inch piece of track here right at the very end actually i had this scrap left over where i cut the rail for the uppers and it's longer than what i need it's not gonna hurt anything because since the dishwasher goes here there's no cabinet and there'll be a little bit of track behind it with a piece missing in between it just saves me from having to make an extra cut that it's not really gonna matter one way or the other [Music] okay i apologize for how dark it is in here it is a little cloudy outside and this overhead light has completely quit working which we're changing that out i just haven't done it yet so all i have is a work light in here reflecting off the walls and it really works better for me because i have my laser level set up and the darker your room the better your line shows up anyway this is all the rail i have to put up for this particular kitchen this will hang all the cabinets that are going in here now that i've got the rail up all i have to do is the same process i did on the upper cabinets and just hook it onto this rail and this is the part if you're following ikea's directions i differ a little bit from how they say to do it but you can see in the directions when you're about to hang the cabinet on the wall this is where they mention attaching the adjustable legs to the front in the picture below they show two people lifting the cabinet place so that you don't snap these legs off unfortunately i'm this guy right here i don't have anybody here to help me so i don't attach the legs yet and if you've got someone here to help you install your cabinets like they show in the instructions and you feel more comfortable doing it the way they've shown there's no problem doing it that way honestly i'm kind of half joking about being here by myself i mean i am here by myself but i'm only joking about the fact that that's the only reason i'm doing it because if amanda or anyone else was here helping me i would still not put the legs on the cabinet yet mostly because i just don't see any reason and put them on they're just gonna be in the way they tend to fall off when you're trying to move it from one point to another and it's easier for me just to transport the cabinets from where i've worked on them in here into the kitchen hang them up on the rail and since the legs are adjustable i just screw them in as short as they'll go slide them under the cabinet and then put them in place but full disclaimer this is not how ikea says to do it so if you want to follow their instructions i'm not trying to talk anyone out of it my whole purpose of making this video is just to show you how i do things and what seems easier to me as with a lot of my videos i try to show the easiest way to do this when you're working alone because unfortunately that's the way it ends up a lot of times is when you're doing a project like this you don't have a set of helping hands to get these things in place and i've just had to figure out over the years how to maneuver these cabinets and lift them in place without any help and this is how i do it [Music] okay the problem i'm having here is i didn't allow myself any room for any error when i measured this wall in my plan it is the exact dimension that these cabinets are and usually if you leave yourself just a little bit of wiggle room you can fit in a filler piece where there's any gaps there's no wiggle room on mine at all this opening is 36 inches but so is this cabinet unfortunately this wall is a little out of plum so it's kicked out a little bit at the bottom which kicks all these cabinets out a little bit at the bottom so at the top i'm getting 36 inches here but at the bottom it's like a 16th of an inch shy so this last cabinet doesn't want to slide in just super easy there are several different ways you can use to get this one in place when they're tight like this but the first thing i'm going to try is just the easiest i'm going to try to get this just to go in by forcing it into place forcing it without damaging it [Music] it's definitely snug but it's in the last cabinet i have to put in place is the one here for the kitchen sink before i can put it in place i'll have to do a little modification to the cabinet to accommodate the water lines the drain and the electrical for the garbage disposal before i cut the cabinet though i'm going to shut the water off out of the street so i can take these two cutoffs off these water lines that way all i'll have to cut out for the cabinet is large enough for the lines themselves not these handles so the cut on the cabinet will look a little bit neater i'm also going to go ahead and remove this drain because this is an old drain and it had quite a bit of rust in it it may take a little bit because that thing has probably been there for quite some time in the world of construction three tools stand on a pedestal far above any other as the manliest tools you can own number one is the chainsaw just the danger involved with operating it makes it manly it's by default number two i would say is the axe very similar to the chainsaw but not quite as dangerous and the third tool may surprise you it's the pipe wrench tell me i'm wrong there's a high likelihood a lot of rust is going to come out of this pipe if i do get it off so i'm just going to put this box under it to catch it [Music] part of it came off i'm gonna try to get the last little bit out but you can see that's the rust and debris that was in this pipe [Music] [Music] [Applause] that is a risk you always run removing old galvanized pipe when it's really rusted like that as i was turning this one it broke off inside this cast iron fitting here so now i have to try to carefully cut loose what threads are left in here and dig them out i was hoping to get everything in place today but unfortunately i didn't but you can see we've got all the cabinets for the entire kitchen except for the sink base as soon as i get that drain out i'll get that one notched out in the back and put in place and then we can start putting on all the doors and drawer fronts but thanks to the magic video you won't have to wait as long as i do magic [Music] all right now that i've got that out i'm gonna go ahead and measure for all these openings in the back of the cabinet and drill out the cabinet and have it ready to go before i shut the water off and take these cut-offs off and this is the thing i see people stress the most about when they're installing any sort of cabinetry they worry about cutting or drilling their cabinets in the wrong spot and then looking terrible when they're done and my method may seem a little hard to wrap your brain around but this is just how i've always done it anytime i'm gonna have to do multiple cuts on the back of something or multiple holes like this i like to draw out the shape of what the holes are going into i know that's pretty simple but this is the back of the cabinet not the front so everything i draw here is going to be in reverse so just looking at this i'm picturing that this is the back side of the cabinet so i'd actually be looking at it from this direction if i was standing at this wall looking out almost like i'm standing behind these openings so when i get ready to draw these out on here you're not going to put the garbage disposal line on the right side like it is here it's going to be on the left because you're reversing everything because you're standing behind it so i know the garbage disposal is about midway up on the side and it's on the left which is on the right the way i'm looking at it here and then i know in the middle towards the bottom there's gonna be two of these lines that'll be the cold and that'll be the hot opposite of what they are here and then up about the same height as this they'll be the bigger hole for the drain so if you can see that's opposite of what i've got here it's just the reverse and there's nothing really good to measure off here as far as the top like if you're going to try to measure from the top of the cabinet down we don't really have a good reference point because if i just use the top of this cabinet as my reference point you can see it's a little higher than this rail if i laid a level here and drew a line across here this track's kind of my way to measure that what i do i measure down like a simple distance that makes the math easy here like i'll measure down six inches so when i'm doing my calculations i'll just have to add or subtract six inches from what i'm doing and then i'll give myself a level line all the way across and that'll be the point i used to reference to measure all these on this i'll just have to add six inches to it to get back to the top of the cabinet and the side to side measurements i will pull off this existing cabinet that i have here [Music] okay these are all my reference numbers for the back of this cabinet and you can see now with the cabinet turned around backwards like this that's why i had to do all these in reverse from the way i was looking at them in the kitchen now they'll transfer directly onto the back of this cabinet and i don't have to do the reverse now when i'm not looking at it and if you use this method just don't forget to add back the six inches that you measure down to begin with [Music] i just told you to do it and i forgot to do it myself on those second two holes i forgot to measure down an extra six inches so i have to correct that [Music] now that i got my measurements on there i'm not actually going to drill all the way through the cabinet i'm just going to drill a pilot hole and then i'm going to drill through on the other side because if you've ever used a hole saw to drill through something you know what i'm talking about it'll just blow out the other side so i want to drill from the good side so when you're looking inside the cabinet you'll have a nice clean cut and the blown out portion will be on the back [Music] all right i've got the water shut off and i've drained all the water out of these lines after i removed the cut offs so now it's just a moment of truth to see if my measurements are right and this fits [Music] it did fit perfectly the way i measured it and cut it out i'll show you you see that's our electrical for the garbage disposal the two cutouts for the water lines then that's the one for the drain so hopefully you can see how easy it is to get an ikea assembled and set in place there's really nothing too complicated to any of this other than maybe cutting out for your plumbing with a little pre-planning it's not that hard either now we've got all this set in place the next step will be making sure all of our boxes are completely level once we have them all level right where we want them we will lock them all into place we will fasten cabinet to cabinet and we'll put the legs and toe kicks on [Music] you
