- My next guest is a college student who just truly embodies what it means to go that extra mile. After his car broke down, before his first day of work, he was determined to get there anyway. So he made some calls, sent out some texts, pleading for a ride, but he struck out. He realized there was only one option. He would walk. So he set out on a grueling 20-mile journey and walked all through the night to get to work, to be on time. And today he's here to tell his story. (audience cheering) Hey everybody, please welcome Walter Carr. (audience cheering) Walter, how you doing man? - I'm doing great, how about you, Steve? - Welcome to the show. So where you from man? - I'm from Birmingham, Alabama. - [Steve] Oh, you Alabama? - Yes sir. (audience applauding) - Yeah. So let me ask you, man, what motivated you to walk instead of calling off your first day? - I just got laid off my job for UPS, so I was putting in job applications and nobody gimme a call back. And I was just like, somebody just gimme that chance, I can show 'em who I am. And the mover company called me and said, "Hey, you hired." And I was so grateful for that. And my ride, my car broke down, my ride bailed on me, and I was like, I was thinking, "I can get there. I got two legs and two feet. I have a way to get there." So I'm supposed to be there at 7:45 in the morning. I left at 11:40 PM that night to get there. (audience applauding) - This boy said, "I'm gonna walk 20 miles in seven hours." (laughs) That's crazy, man. Now, you met some amazing people along the way. Tell us about the journey. - Walking at nighttime in dark streets, cars dodged me at the last minute. Even at one point in time a dog chased me. Threw a baseball to get away. And at four o'clock in the morning, right before you get on the highway, other side, take a two minute rest. And at that time, a police officer came to the side and said, "Hi, y'all, you okay?" I said, "It gonna sound real crazy, but I'm actually heading to work on my first day of the job." And he asked me when the last time did I eat? I said, "Last night at 8:00 PM." He said, "Well, let's get some food in your stomach." I said, "Well, I just paid my rent for my apartment. I don't have no money." He says, "Okay, it's on me, get in the car." And then we went to a restaurant, and several officers met us there. He said, "Well, order whatever you want." So I order one chicken. He said, "No, order two, it's on me." And then we got to know each other. - So what happened next? - At 4:30 in the morning, we strategize how I can get there, but they couldn't drop me off at the homeowner's house that early. So they was like, "We're gonna drop you off at the church. Not too far. Leave at six o'clock in the morning, should get there by eight." But I didn't wanna rush. I wanted to beat my team there. So I said I'm gonna leave at 5:30 in the morning, and I started striking out a few more miles. And at that time frame, his friend that knew that me in the area came, picked me up, and drove me the rest of the few miles. And at 6:30 in the morning, we arrived at the homeowner's house and he went ahead and tell them it was okay for me to come in to be this early. - So the homeowner, Jenny is here. (audience applauding) Okay, so you're the homeowner. What'd you think when you opened the door and you found out what had happened to Walter? - To be honest, my eyes just filled with tears. At 6:30 in the morning, to hear that story, and about this young man who I'd not met yet. And so when we said, "Sure, let's just, bring him on in, that's fine. Let him let him come here a little bit early." And we met him, and you just loved him right away. I mean he just, just a fine young man, you can tell. And you know, being a mom, I knew he was tired. I said, "Hey, why don't you go on upstairs and just take a little rest before we start the move? And that way you can, you know, rest before your team comes." - [Steve] Wait, wait, hold up, wait, wait, wait. - [Jenny] Yes, I did that. (audience applauding) - Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You tell this kid to go upstairs in your house in a bedroom and rest? - [Jenny] I did, 'cause I knew he had to be tired. And he said, "No ma'am, I wanna get started and help you guys move." (audience applauding) - All right, so let's get to this part, folks. Luke Marklin, who happens to be the CEO of Bellhop Movers, was so impressed by Walter's determination that he wanted to personally thank him. When they met, Luke surprised Walter with the gift that left him speechless. Check it out. (upbeat music) - He's got everything he needs to be a Bellhop. The one piece he's missing is, like, a way to get there. - Yeah, that's right. - So this is my car. - [Walter] Okay. - [Luke] I'd like it to be your car. - Seriously? (audience cheering) Thank you. - Thank you, thank you. - Oh my God. - Well, we got Luke here too. Luke, welcome to the show. - [Luke] Thanks. - You gave Walter your own car. What inspired you to do that? - Walter did. The grit, the heart that he showed, is just something that's remarkable, and that just really inspired me and our team. And we said, you know, he deserves a car. - That's just... (audience applauding) I gotta tell you man, this whole story is so good. It's so good on so many levels. You know, first of all, young people, to find that type of grit and hustle in a young person today? Today? (audience applauding) All right, the car wasn't the only surprise that Walter received, because Jenny was so inspired to help Walter out that she set up a GoFundMe for him. The goal was to reach $2,000, and he ended up collecting more than $90,000. (audience cheering) Oh, it don't stop getting crazy. Walter, what'd you do? - I gave $25,000 to Birmingham Education Foundation that was in the high school. (audience applauding) You know, that organization gives high school students the opportunity to do job shadowing, internship, mock interviews, to be ready for our profession beyond high school and get us ready to go into college life and get ready for us. - So you knew about this organization? - Yes, I was in it in high school. - Oh, you were in it? - Yes, sir. They made me to be the Walter I am today. - Really? (audience applauding) Somebody else was very impressed by your generosity, and he's come here with a little surprise. Please welcome the executive director of the Birmingham Education Foundation, J.W. Carpenter. (audience applauding) - [Walter] Hey! - You know him? - Yes, I know him. - Mr. Carpenter, what would you like to tell Walter? - Well, Walter, you've inspired me. You've inspired thousands of people all over the world. And with your permission, we want to use the donation that you gave us to start the Walter Carr Award. (audience cheering) And I know you'd be the first to say that there are hundreds, thousands of kids in the Birmingham City schools with limitless potential. And this award will be given to a student who graduates from the Birmingham city schools who demonstrates the same kind of hard work and really the same kind of character and decency that you demonstrate every day. (audience applauding) - You know, man, I mean for him to do that in your name, for this woman to open up her home, for this guy to give you a car. It's still a lot of good people in this country, man. It's still a lot of good people who care. It just is, man. It just really does take a village. You 20. - Yes, sir. - You ain't see this coming. - No sir, I didn't. And you my biggest idol. I always idolized you throughout my whole life. Every show, everything you do, I have always been and watched. - Hey, man, don't do this to me today. (audience laughing and applauding) - It's an honor to be here. It's an honor to be here, to see my biggest idol and be right here with you, it's a blessing to me. And I thank God for it. I really do. (audience applauding) - See, you know, man, what's crazy about this, is if you are a spiritual person, you ain't missing this. You just gotta see how it all come together. You have no idea who God made you to be, but you gotta hang in there to find out. You can't give up. It's at your darkest moments He show up. He show up, He be shining, man. (audience applauding) God show up. See, the color is all out of this story. This ain't a story about color. (audience applauding) This is really the truth about who we are and who we supposed to be, how God set this thing up. This is exactly how He set it up. This how it's supposed to go. It ain't supposed to be no, "Oh, God, he can't come stay in my house. Who that little Black man at the house? Call the police." The police, we keep hearing about how they don't pick us up. They do pick you up. The police will go get you something to eat. Every police ain't shooting us. We gotta start telling these stories, man. Because these are stories that's gotta get out, because it inspires other people. This is so crazy the way this happening. Who let somebody they don't know come in their house and go upstairs and lay down? Who gives away a car? Who puts a scholarship, you got a scholarship in your name, dog. That's crazy. Do you see that? Well Walter, you done mess me up today, and that's not the only surprise we got. Your dedication and determination has really, like I said, it's just inspires all of us to be better. You have no idea the path you set on. You don't know, man. You can actually be a poor kid from nothing. - [Walter] Yeah. - And because of God's grace and mercy, He can put you in places you never ever thought you'd be. (audience applauding) See, I'm sitting here, I'm tripping, 'cause I'm a you. I was a kid out the dirt. Where I am today is because of that grace and mercy. It's sort of crazy, man. I hope you see what's happening and get on this path and stay there. 'Cause you didn't get sent in this direction for no reason. You ain't got a scholarship in your name for no reason. These people didn't give you this car for no reason. This woman didn't open up her house for no reason. The police didn't pick you up and didn't do you like you read about. - [Walter] Yes, sir. - They help you, they fed you. All of this happened for a reason. You got to stay that path, man. - Yes, sir. - 'Cause of that, we gonna send you on a five night getaway to the True Bay Boutique Resort in Grenada. (audience cheering) Yeah, now, you probably don't know where that is, 'cause I didn't know where Grenada was until I was 44. So we gonna need a passport. You got a passport? - No, I- - You gotta get busy, dog. See, I know all this here. At 20, I didn't have nothing. I'm telling you, this dude is me. You're gonna experience an all-inclusive accommodations in a two bedroom villa. Yeah. See, you ain't even got a two bedroom apartment. - No. (laughs) - Yeah, see all this way over the top right now. And then all of this airfare is provided by Grenada Tourism Authority. Walter, you're an incredible young brother, man. And God got something really great in store for you. I mean, it already started, but you're on your path to some real greatness. You're gonna change a lot of people's lives, man. (audience cheering) - Thank you. Thank you so much. - Thank you, man. (audience cheering) Love you, man. - I love you too. - Yeah, yeah I do. Appreciate you, bro. We'll be right back, everybody. Hey, you made it to the end of this video.
