the Grand Paris Express project is the largest public transit project in Europe and the biggest Subway expansion program in the western world and it's adding over 200 km of track and 68 stations to the Paris Metro with four new Express Metro lines lines 15 16 17 and 18 and extensions to line 14 so in the societ DU Grand Peri the organization responsible for building the project reached out about covering things going on in person we had to say yes and what's even more exciting than the new infrastructure that will carry trains above and below Paris subscribe for a video on that coming soon we also got to see the workhorses of this new network as the new line 15 trains took to the rails in the tunnels of the new Metro for the very first time line 15 16 and 17 of the Paris Metro will create a ring and a half around Paris connecting Re Metro and tram lines while also connecting the Paris Metro to char deal airport all of the new Grand purce Express lines will use Metropolis trains from Alam with three car MR3 V trains on line 16 and 17 and six car Mr 6V sets on line 15 line 18 will'll also see similar but smaller trains appropriate for its lower ridership the trains for the first phase of line 15 in the South are going to be serviced at a new maintenance facility near Bri V shamp station on the little tail of the line which is entirely underground with what's really cool about the yard we got to see is it's really more of a garage basically fully enclosed and semi-underground which gives me serious Montreal Vibes and should help the trains last for decades since they'll essentially always be used indoors What followed were speeches from politicians and people working on the project who were all very passionate about how the new Metro would improve Journeys but also life for residents actually going to the tracks the first thing I noticed was the huge concrete buffer stops in front of the trains which won't be escaping anytime soon looking at the trains themselves they are epic with a bright light ring at the ends that changes color depending on the Travel Direction and these trains are very reminiscent of the Ala Metropolis set seen in Sydney and Montreal with the prominent anti-climb and a similar door layout the 108 M Mr 6V trains are six cars long obviously and can hit 110 kmph which helps put the Express in Grand Paris Express they also interestingly have four pantographs which is a rather High Pantagraph to car ratio these trains are also much wider than the older Paris Metro stock and at about 2.8 M they're actually the same width as the trains on the Reb now while dignitaries crammed onto the train to take it for a spin along a section of test track leading to the line we hung back to get on board and look at the trains in nerdy detail on board the first thing you notice is the big front wind screen which is good because he'll be able to stand up here and enjoy the view with line 15 and all Grand Paris Express lines being completely driverless of course like all all driverless trains there are controls tucked away in case of emergency problems or taking train fans for a spin along the line before all of the automated systems are up and running the actual interior design feels like a cross between the tram on T9 which I'm obligated to talk about in as many videos as possible and the mp14 rubber tire cars that run on some existing Metro lines with the lovely deep red and blue seats with train line patterns as well as a mix of longitudinal and transverse seating like the Paris Metro is known for however in the case of these trains there's actually even more longitudinal that is side-facing seating than usual and no folding seats the layout is actually very similar to what we'll see in Toronto with its new automated Ontario line what is nice to see is that the quad seats are lined up with the windows and that there are usb chargers all over the place so you can charge up on the go there are also very smart leaning pads on the back of the Quad seats which means people who like standing near the doors won't block them walking through there are also lots of overhead handholds and the designers went wild with the lighting as with many newer allam trains it's bright and looks great there are also really big stanions which split into four widely spaced poles that will give people lots of space to grab without awkwardly touching hands and these terminate in yet another aesthetically pleasing ring of light walking from car to car you can actually see what an unfinished gangway looks like with springs and various other mechanisms holding the cars gangways together which is neat my guess is that when these are done they'll look more like those on the Azure Metro trains in Montreal looking at the doors which longtime viewers will know I spend a lot of time thinking about you have a ton of nice features including color door indicator lights and automated passenger counting sensors the doors themselves are really big wide plug style ones similar to those on the rim and I like the thoughtful lighting included along the door sill so you don't trip getting on or off the windows while not full height are very big and in general the windows around the train are great perfect for Transit nerds to look out at the tunnels and infrastructure of line 15 I should say that combined with the window design the plug style doors seem to really help insulating the trains from noise as they're super quiet overhead you'll notice tons of screens which will show you where you are on the line and where the exits to each station are as on line 14 with the mp14 this style of screen is great when trains are busy or when you're sitting facing sideways and you don't want to Crane your neck to see where you are now like the Sydney and Montreal trains that I keep mentioning and unlike what people usually think of when they think of the Paris Metro the these cars have steel wheels and as always we had to get that bogey level shot that becomes very hard as a member of the public once the Line opens as the Train full of dignitaries pulled back in there was a crazy light and music show to welcome the train back and while at first I thought it was a bit over the top the truth is these new trains are going to move millions of passengers every day in beautiful comfort and at breathtaking speed and if that's not worth celebrating I'm not sure what is thanks for watching and a special thanks to Francis from the societ to Grand perie for coordinating everything and Julian our man in Paris who's helped us out so much with content on the city over the [Music] years
