The philosophical intent and the  aesthetic program of The Folly   really is to provide this sort of gentle retreat. So we're really concerned about this room in   particular having an interior  quality of calm and repose. I'm Pip Cheshire and I'm from Cheshire Architects   and I'm sitting in The Folly which is on  the clifftop at Takapuna in New Zealand. The Folly is really the in-piece of a  project that started here about 25 or   30 years ago with a single house  that stepped down the clifftop. The clifftop faces the East and so the  original house didn't get a great deal of   midday and afternoon sun and so about maybe 8 or  10 years ago we started building an extension out   to the North and The Folly then sits at the very  Northern end of the property and in that process,   shields a house to the North as well as providing  a foil to the formality of the main house. I think in all the projects there is an  element of managed revelation, so that one   will arrive and get some hint of something and  then as one approaches it's slowly rolled out,   and so with The Folly it's seen from the  main house, it's seen across a green grass,   it's seen in the distance it looks like a  fairly modest, rusty shed but as one comes through the door, one realises that there's a level  of consideration and luxury that's been provided. So that there's a place for everything  and everything in its place although it looks very casual and very informal.  The floor plan of the building really is in two halves because it has two functions, the first half is a garden shed, the second half is the retreat and the guest house and so the inside-ness of this building is really important,   it's essentially a rectangular room, everything is visible when you walk through the door and the fireplace represents the Eastern enclosure of the wall so there's a outdoor room immediately beyond the fireplace, a terrace where one can sit and look out on the   Hauraki Gulf and one sees that through  pōhutukawa trees, it's not a place for viewing the far horizon once contained within the terrace and within the whole Folly complex. One of the critical elements of The Folly is  to provide a place of repose and reflection   and so the qualities of the space that generate  that or facilitate that are really important. Things like the reflectivity of rough-sawn  timber that we've used on the walls is really   important for determining the quietness of the  building, it slows down the eye as one looks   at the room and that it seems to me as part of the qualities of warmth and enclosure. I think too the fact that the materials are used consistently so the same material is used for the walls,   the floor and the roof but for all of  that we were really interested in the   building suggesting some of the humble  qualities of the earlier miners cottages   and so from the outside the materials  are corrugated iron but rusted you know,   the implication is that the building has been  here for a very long time and the iron has rusted. When I look around here I see an extraordinary endeavour by a large number of people. I'm delighted to take credit for it but actually they may be guided by my sketches and watercolours but really the contribution of the project team in our office. And then the contractors on site, and the interior  designers from the United States have all made an   extraordinary contribution here and that's been done by a great deal of goodwill, collaborative  endeavour and a few tense moments and I guess for me there is an exploration of personal memory   in there too of very modest buildings that I  experienced when I was growing up or I read   about and those are often buildings that have a  huge poignancy about them, out of a very simple   form so rather than reaching for complexity  and the accretion of element upon element I'm really interested in how much can you pare it  back and it still gets stronger and stronger.
