[Music] [Music] [Music] hey guys welcome to the 2017 BMW m4 competition pack quick shout out to Tony Lewis and the baby MW group for lending me this car let's talk about the negative bits first and in with the positive businesses plenty of positive bits so first negative bit that I find and that stood out to me over the 800 miles that I've been lucky enough to have this car it's a steering that complete lack of steering feel now we all know most manufacturers are guilty for giving too heavy steering these days especially if cars have some kind of configurator and you put them into sports or Sport Plus or whatever the equivalent is and suddenly the steering just gets really heavy now that's meant to fool us into thinking that all I'm in a really sporty car all of a sudden or supercar whatever but actually all it does is completely kill any steering feel now this car even when I'm in comfort which is what I've got everything set to so both laying modes and obviously the default mode when I start the car up it's in comfort and even in comfort I think this steering is too heavy I only really stress to say that because my m1 35 has better steering feel the 440 grand coupe I had recently has better steering feel the 320d I have has better steering feels know how they've managed to get it so wrong in the EM car and also let's just point out that this is the very latest facelifted version M for competition pack and every iteration of the fa TSM threes and M pause that I've tried they keep getting better second gripe is the suspension it's just set up far too stiff in my opinion again comfort in everything every mode I'm in comfort at the moment and it's still very stiff its comforts a great mode to being in this car when you're really pushing on but when you just cruising around like I am at the moment it's just too stiff the car never feels like it settles down when you push beyond that when you push 8090 a hundred percent on the track it all starts to make more sense and yes this is an M car after all so I get that but I just wish that they've calibrated the suspension a bit better so that when you're in comfort and using it as your daily which I'm sure most people use these cars as 80% at the time it just I wish it just settled down I wish you could press a button and it just settled down but that is just a bit of an M car trait and you know the m2 that I owned for 10 months that was it had the similar sort of problems and in fact that car didn't even have any kind of adaptive or adjustable suspension so it was always frantic busy moving around great when you're pushing on but not so great when you just want it to settle down the earlier phase II cars had traction issues and this very latest iteration has traction issues now we've got massive 20-inch wheels with million Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires I think they've raised are like 285 or 295 s the humongous but they still can't find any grip and on top of that unfortunately the traction control electronics or software in these M cars don't seem to be as good as the ones in the standard Road going car now I don't know if that's just as a result of the fact that the M cars have got LSDs fitted to them but they just don't work if you turn everything on so we've got traction control on we're on a quiet road now so everything's on this is in like normal sort of nannying mode you put your foot down and there's just nothing that's constantly trying to find you can feel the power it's just there's nothing there you know like if I was in my own 35 I'll be down the road whereas this thing just go you know it's it's frustrating so then you put it in well let's put my preset on because that's MDM mode so we've got an MDM now which is basically like halfway house it's like Sport Plus in non em cars so MDM what does that do to me to me it doesn't seem to do much now when I had the m4 out on track a couple of months ago I could notice the difference coming out of corners it was less intrusive a net that allowed you to put a bit more power down but it certainly didn't allow for any slip or anything so now we're in MDM mode again first gear from the floor control machine is traction control issues and it's just pulling back pulling back pulling back and this hardly allowing any slip the only solution then is to turn everything off you just hold down that for three or four seconds there you go in fact it seems even less than these ones and now I've got everything off so that's great you know when it's a sunny warm day and the tires are warm it's not too dangerous like that and in fact that's when the ghazal is best but I'm a reasonably good driver and I would never trust myself with that sort of on a damp or cold winter's day one other minor nickel is seating position talked about this a lot I'm six foot three and a half so I'm not expecting to fit in every car unfortunately I don't and I fit in here very comfortably but even with these beautiful very supportive competition pack seats if I sit up comfortably like that I'm sitting two inches too high still maybe even three so that's the negative stuff out the way now please don't hate me for saying that but I'm just reviewing this car from the bottom of my heart and the only reason I wanted to get the negative stuff out of the way is because the rest of this car is mega [Music] our performance wise we're talking naught to 60 in four seconds flat I believe then it has a limited top speed of 155 miles now which is just typically German but I feel if this thing was unlimited it would do 180 590 miles now that's if it's a very quick car a lot of people ask me about comparing this to my m to my you know my late m to its two meter to me it's a totally different car in the sense that this is really fast I mean in a straight line it's Akane with the parent to the m2 if you get the traction down you just can't and it's really really really fast monstrous that was third gear there and it gets the traction down most of the time at third gear providing it's trying whatever else another thing is the gearbox setting now you have a three different velocities of shift again in the forces shift which the m2 is set as default and you can't adjust I think is terrible because the DCT every time it shifts from first to second to third it gives you a big thump which is engineered in there to again to make it feel fast and maybe it is but the problem with that is it just triggers the traction control and when you've got the traction control off it just triggers wheel spin so the best setting with the gearbox is in my opinion is is the the middle one that number two and it's just a bit smoother and I honestly think that that's why BMW now moving away from the DCT and onto the ZF because there's NF is so efficient and smooth it's shifting up there it doesn't cause that sort of knee-jerk will spin reaction every time you shift up yes the ZF doesn't feel as exciting as a DCT but if we're talking about trying to get efficient sort of acceleration times then on four is the better box now I like the DCT I do I think it's really really fast and really effective and it will always give you a look and probably give me first here it has 6,000 that's when you push on that this car really starts to make a lot of sense like it's just it just seems to hunker down I know that sounds really bizarre but it really does it just holds the road so what we talking price-wise well this m4 competition package base is 64 grand I believe this one lime in at the moment about sixty seven and a half now they come pretty well specs as a basic car especially the composition pack you have things like the carbon ceramic brakes which I think about six grand or something sitting now this standard setup is fantastic from what I can tell and again only if you're really tracking these cars I think you know it then maybe be worth the investment of getting the carbon ceramic brakes but once you start adding them and extra bits then you're talking about a 75 to 80 grand car and it puts it into a 911 territory so I would stay live on the options and just appreciate the car for what it is is the 60 odd grand car we've got the 55 engine under the hood under the specific raised hood now that's a 3 liter twin turbo straight-6 and in the competition package guys it puts out 444 brake horsepower and a 400 pound-feet of torque so it's a punchy engine it's got plenty of power it's got plenty of torque it's a very good end engine and you know what it's actually really if you want it to be efficient it will be efficient as well it will do 30 mpg if you're taking reasonably easy on the motorway and it will do you know I think I've done about an average of 220 122 since I've had it and a lot of the driving has been fairly spirited so it's an impressive engine you know it's it's so much more of a overall package than the old v8 in that sense you know a shitload more torque and a the hope more efficiency yes it doesn't have that amazing v8 sing you know right up top [Music] there are better sounding cars out there but saying that look at the Cayman and boxes and all those sort of things people are downsizing the fall BOTS and trust me this thing sounds so much better than any full-bore ever will [Music] means I don't think that's a bad sound and and it rose to about seven half thousand ribs as well which were charged and is insane and it doesn't feel like with the b-58 you know and at one 42 43 44 45 fit was like you kind of feel like short shifty in that because you feel that massive Boulder talk not dropping away but you just feel that that's where all the meat is in that power ancient where is this thing it's pretty linear the thought of response again I have it in the softer setting because you touch this also in these things and in any sort of especially the Germans lady you go for 10 percent thought of when you get 40 percent hour and it's not great it's not great when you're sort of on the limit especially in slippery conditions what temp said thought oh you want 10% power head-up display in here is awesome especially when you got it in the m mode you get an ugly big sort of rev counter at the top different colors almost like four-minute ones though and that's great I love head-up displays I love me I'm gonna look down the road and you know see what speed I'm doing and I'm following the now if you see where I'm going recently I was lucky enough to try a car with very similar power and a very similar chassis setup with Google Drive and that had the new ps4 s's now let me tell you those tires are unbelievable to me they felt thirty forty percent better than the politics was in slippery conditions or in the wet and they felt pretty much as good as cup twos in the dry and I know someone mazi underscore m4 who runs who now has some ps4 S's on his m4 competition pack and he said they completely transformed the car now when he said that I was like you know I'm a bit defensive about the standard politics was because I just can't imagine it I being much better than which this got has but trust me they really are and I think some ps4s is on the air we on the m4 would really sort out a lot of interaction issues really would that's definitely an upgrade or something that's worth looking at if you've got one of these or if you're looking at getting one but you're a bit put off by by this sort of traction issues that it does what Michelet have done with those tires I mean I go on about Michelin a lot but that you guys have really excelled with that tire so yeah that would that would cure a lot of the traction issues in this car and my love for these cars has grown a lot more than when I first tried the early f80 m3 then Falls I've also blown away by them I really wasn't but but this very latest one they have you can feel they tweaked a lot of things in here and I think they've done a fantastic job I really do I'm um I'm really gutted that I had to give this car back tomorrow but I'm also looking forward to then jumping in my a monthly five and doing a proper review because I haven't since it had this mounting stuff done to it and actually seeing what it feels like after living with this car for a week see what my opinions are on that car I still think the M lights are the best value high-performance BMW on sale for sure they are the M on 40 especially because it's a bit cheaper than the 240 they are the best value you know they're half the money of these M cars and they offer 75 to 80 percent of the performance so you know but as we all know to get that extra bit costs a lot of money and this you know this car proves that it really does just wanted to thank Tony Lewis very
