we all want beautifully updated homes but sometimes budgets can stop us from doing so so in this video i am going to share 18 different ways that you can update your home on a budget hey there my name is yami i am your latina next door welcome back to my channel i love making my home beautiful and i like to share high-end home decor and diys on a budget if you do too please make sure to give this video a thumbs up and subscribe so that you too can become part of the familia if you've been following me for a while you know we purchased this fixture upper about a year and a half ago and then we've been transforming it room by room it's a huge undertaking and while doing this we always have to take into consideration what we can reasonably do so i wanted to share with you guys some ideas that might help you update your home in case you're like me and you want to keep things budget-friendly before we get started i want to thank my sponsor hoover for partnering with me on this video more on that to come here we go number one updating your home sometimes can be as simple as painting your walls paint goes a long way it's honestly one of the most dramatic ways that you can change space in your home for minimal costs whether you're going from dark to light or even maybe changing the pattern of your paint on your walls you will see that this will carry on a drastic change and i'm sure that you've noticed that paint prices have gone up over time but oftentimes they do go on sale sometimes 30 to 40 percent off the original price so it's always good to buy when the paints are on sale and it's always good to invest in a paint that has a primer and paint combination so that you get the best coverage with the least amount of paint now for darker colors you want to make sure you stick to the flat or eggshell sheens because when you paint with darker colors you tend to see more of the imperfections on your walls but lighter colors you can always go up to satin because this gives you a very nice wipe ability especially if you have a little children that like to touch things all the time and you can easily wipe your walls off with a satin finish if you are looking for a lighter look for your home now along the idea of painting another way that you can change the look of your home dramatically is by changing the color of your cabinets however you want to make sure that you use the best paint for this as well as the paint techniques so that when you go to the trouble of painting cabinets which can be a very substantial process if you do it correctly you want to make sure that you do it the right way and that it will last a long time as a matter of fact i do have a video where i share all of my tips and tricks to get the best finish on painted cabinets i tell you exactly what type of paint you should be using what type of applications and rollers and all the things that i have learned from painting my cabinets over the years trust me it works and you can definitely do it yourself and you will love the changes that just by painting your cabinets will have on your home switching from painting really quick the third way you can change the look of your home is by shopping your home it's by taking pieces from other parts of your home and using it in another room this could be anything from lamps to art side table to chairs honestly you already have pieces in your home that you probably really like and you want to keep around but moving them to another space will freshen up the area and also it doesn't cost anything because you're using things that you already have so take a look in your home see what you have that you can swap up and see if it works for you if it doesn't you can always change it back and try something new i do this a lot with my area rugs which takes me to number four is area rugs we all love the look of area rugs and we wish we can update them all the time i mean nothing looks better than either fresh carpet in your home that's brand new or a brand new area rug to anchor a space however area rugs can get a little dingy over time and they are an actual investment if you do want a really nice one but one way you can make them look amazing in your home is to make sure they are clean and fresh and the way i like to do this is by shampooing my own carpets i have been doing this for many years now and i don't throw away any of my old rugs because i always like keeping them looking brand new i actually had this rug in my last house i brought it over to this one and it used to be in my sunroom but when we switched over the living space area to where my dining room used to be and it was pretty bad like bad this was where we were eating hanging out the entire time while we were fixing most of the rest of the house so this poor rug got a beating and my husband wanted to throw it away but i knew that i can save it and i used hoover's smart wash pet complete automatic carpet cleaner for this this carpet cleaner is actually designed to clean up after your pet's worst messes but you know what also makes messes kids yeah kids and i have three this machine is so easy to use you pull it out of your box you click a couple things in place and you are ready to go you spot treat all the really bad spots because there were really bad spots you pull off the handle and you shoot and spray and that's basically it then you are ready to wash fill up the containers with water and your cleaning solution and all you have to do is push the machine forward it mixes the water in the solution sprays out the right amount of solution for your carpet and as you pull back it picks up all of the excess water i don't know about you guys but i find carpet cleaning to be very satisfying you wouldn't believe the amount of nastiness in that carpet but i'll just go ahead and show you the difference between the dirty part and the clean part it was night and day and i did not have to get rid of this carpet now i actually have two carpets that i can switch out between each other throughout the seasons and it will always seem like i made an update to my home even though it's carpets that i already owned this machine did an amazing job it was super easy to dispense the very disgusting water that came out it was easy to rinse out and it was easy to put back together and just keep going so i'll have a link below if you guys want to check out the smart wash pet complete automatic carpet cleaner that does amazing and i'll be honest with you guys i am not usually fond of the carpet cleaner solutions and the way they smell previous ones that i have used haven't been so great however this little bottle right here if you add it to your clean water solution tank it will leave the most amazing smell on your carpet that will last for days and i was so impressed with it i felt like i had a brand new carpet and honestly when you do buy a carpet cleaner you want to make sure you invest in a good one and while it is a bit of an investment up front you save money in the long run because you don't have to hire professionals to clean your carpets and if you happen to go thrift shopping and come across a second-hand carpet or even on facebook marketplace you don't have to worry about it if it doesn't look it's perfect because you already have a carpet cleaner back at home that will bring that rug back to life so if you've been considering getting a new carpet cleaner for your home for your carpet or your rugs definitely check this one out i will have a link below and you will see the reviews are pretty amazing all right so moving on to the fifth way you can update your home on a budget this is to paint your furniture it doesn't have to be all the furniture it could just be one signature piece in your home maybe a buffet maybe your nightstands that go on either side of your bed maybe a table or even a chair but sometimes we have really beautiful pieces with beautiful bones but they can tend to look a little sad and tired over time and painting them is just what they need in order to get an updated look and there's so many possibilities that you can do you can use latex you can use chalk paint there's lots of options out there and there's a lot of videos sharing how you can apply these paints to your furniture in order to make them last and sometimes you don't even have to invest in very expensive chalk paints i have painted furniture with folk art home decor chalk paint which is very comparable to the waverly chalk paint that you find at walmart as a matter of fact they're made by the same company they're both great quality chalk paints at very minimal costs and it's a great way to update some of your pieces that you may not want to get rid of but look a little tired and are in need of updating all right so number six another way you can update your home is by changing your light fixtures and it doesn't have to be all of them at once because they can be a little expensive but if you change one at a time over the course of time it'll actually be small little bits here and there and by simply changing out the light you will update the look of the space whether it's a chandelier over an island a chandelier over a table a light fixture down a hallway or even one in your bedroom like let's say a fan that might be a little dingy and sometimes a little noisy at night when you have it on and you're trying to sleep changing it out will make such a huge difference in the room you'll see it right away and not only will your new fan be nice but it'll also be quiet too so number seven another way you can update your home and you probably don't always think about this is to actually paint the color of your decor i'm talking vases i'm talking lamps i'm talking sculptures even whatever you have in your home sometimes you just don't want to get rid of it because it either has sentimental value to it or it was an investment but not everything stands a test of time whether it's the color or the style that it was done it originally but if you change it to a monochromatic paint a matte paint a lighter color a darker color sometimes taking statues that are multiple colors and painting them in one solid color will actually make them look more high-end or you can go to the other end of the spectrum and you can add a pattern to it or even texture by making it look aged and unique so there's so many things you can do to the actual items decorating your house that will update their look and make your space look totally different are you ready for number eight this one might upset you but hear me out stop buying cushions just stop what you need to be buying are cushion inserts yes cushion inserts instead of buying brand new cushions every single time and then having a massive collection of cushions stored like a department store then what you do is buy cushion covers or you can make cushion covers i like making my own cushion covers because for me it's actually less expensive if i make my own and what i like about this is not only that it is expensive but it will decrease the amount of storage you will need to hide your cushions because you're using the same ones over and over again and you're just pulling the cushions off folding them down and sticking them somewhere well they will not accumulate so big all the time that you'll need so much shelf space to put them away you can find a lot of inexpensive cushion covers online in your stores or if you want to make your own make sure to buy the fabric when it's on sale and it will be so much easier to change out those cushion covers every single season number nine another way to save on textiles is to get reversible comforters duvets and quilts make sure that when you're out shopping it says this on the label because when you're tired or want to switch things up a little bit of the pattern that you have all you have to do is flip the blanket over and it will completely change the look of your bedding and you didn't have to purchase anything new it's like literally purchasing two different ones for the price of one and with that we're going to move to number 10 which is changing out your curtains or drapes whichever one you prefer whether it's changing out your curtains for the seasons or adding curtains to a specific window it will completely change the look and i don't spend that much because honestly currents can get a little expensive i actually like to go to home goods and buy my curtains there and i always get extra long i believe it's 96 inch curtain because i like to install my curtain rods higher and wider than the actual window to make it look taller and bigger so make sure you do that whenever you're installing a new curtain rod i love having lighter airier colors for the summer and spring months but then i also like to bring some pattern into it because it completely can change the look of a space make it even more high-end when you have beautiful patterns on your curtains you can add shimmery curtains to add a little bit more of a chic look or you can have darker ones that can help block out light and these can be very inexpensive if you know where to look again home goods is my favorite place to shop for curtains a lot of the ones that i have shown you on my channel are from home goods and honestly they are the best bang for your buck as far as quality and price okay so the next one is number 11. for this one i am going to talk about updating your floors but not like you think sometimes updating your floors can be a lot more inexpensive than you can imagine now there are a couple ways that you can do this one is a more complicated way and one is a very simple way and i'm talking about tile floors yes you can paint them you can paint the entire floor grout and all and you can add a stencil to give it a high-end cement tile look and really elevate your floors now i have done this in the past i did this in my laundry room at the last house and i have done this in the sun room in this house and i know a lot of you guys have been asking me how my floors have been holding up and i am working on a video for you guys so just bear with me it will be coming out in the next few weeks this is something that i do love doing i do think painting your floors is honestly one of the best ways and you can paint your wood floors you can plant your tile floors you can plant your linoleum floors you can do a lot with paint on your floors believe it or not and there are several techniques out there that you can do now you can go all out and paint your entire floor like i have before but also in my last house we had cement tiles in some of the bathrooms and before we sold the house i wanted to give them a fresh new look and what i did was something that was very easy that anybody can do and honestly extremely inexpensive and that is painting my grout i did this to all the bathrooms before we sold our last house they all had the same exact tile and unfortunately the grout lines were a little bit dingy they were a little stained and they weren't looking very nice so i found this grout paint at my local hardware store and i just applied it on the grout by just doing this simple change it updated the look of the floors immensely because it covered up and painted all those uneven dirty grout lines and the floors ended up looking brand new when i was done so those are just two different options that you can do when it comes to painting your floors you can go all out and paint the entire thing or you can just update your grout and you will see a huge difference number 12. i'm sure a lot of you know exactly what i'm talking about but when you buy a builder grade home they usually come with these really huge mirrors in the bathroom and frankly there's nothing wrong with them i actually like having large mirrors however they're not very pretty but one way you can add a little bit of style to these mirrors is by adding a frame around it it doesn't take that much time and it doesn't take that much skill as long as you have a handsaw or preferably a miter saw you can cut beautiful corners of wood and just apply them onto your mirror with liquid nails and that's honestly all there is to it framing out your mirror does a huge change to your bathroom with very minimal effort and very small cost and yes i hear you the cost of lumber is definitely a lot higher than what it used to be but you can always find reclaimed pieces of wood or even pallet boards that people need to get rid of on facebook marketplace and you can pick up leftover wood for free so always keep that in mind and while we're on the subject of mirrors this time we're gonna be removing the vanity mirrors that are attached to your like your dressers for your furniture pieces now they are definitely there for function but keeping the mirror attached to your furniture makes it seem kind of like you're in one of those furniture showrooms and everything is all matchy matchy we recently did that when we updated our master bedroom i decided you know what i want to take off the mirror because i wasn't really liking it anymore and i brought in a mirror that i had in my dining room hit the last house and we hung it up above the dresser on the wall and honestly i was very surprised at how different it looked and how much more higher end the entire wall looked once i removed the mirror from the actual furniture that other mirror that i removed will be going in another room i will be reusing it so nothing goes to waste and the good thing is is that if i ever end up changing my mind i could always take it down put the mirror back on or even paint the one that i have on the wall for a different look so by doing that i really think it gave it a more elevated more custom look than just having the mirror that came with the dresser attached onto it so the next one is 14 and it's recreating the look for less and if you know me and you've been following me for a while you probably found me from the look for less challenge which i host on my channel and basically it's challenging yourself to recreate something from a higher end store for a whole lot less just because we cannot get our hands on that 5 000 side table at restoration hardware doesn't mean we can't have something like that and you guys know i am all about that so there's always ways that you can recreate any look that you find online in a store on a magazine for yourself sometimes it takes a little bit of imagination and just some paint or accessories to recreate something that's a lot more expensive but for your home and within your budget so if there's anything that you have been looking at that you really really like think about how you can recreate that same look in your home because oftentimes it's a lot easier than you think and i will leave a link to my latest look for less in the description box below as well as my playlist of all my look for lessons of all time and it can be anything it could be a piece that you put on a coffee table or it can be the actual coffee table whichever it is you have the power to do it and there is no stopping you from recreating a higher end look for less all right this next one's going to take a little bit more effort and a little bit more work from you number 15. one of the things that dates our homes are having popcorn or textured ceilings and they can be a real pain we had those when we moved into our home but we did not have the budget to hire a professional so we had to get very creative when removing them and yes we did it ourselves with minimal costs and with minimal mess and we actually shared a very detailed video on how to do this listing all of the tools that you need and everything that you should do exactly how you should do it in order to make the process a lot easier while it is a very time consuming process it will add so much value to your home not only that but it will decrease the amount of dust and grime that will accumulate on that popcorn and textured ceiling over time so i'll go ahead and link to that video in the description box below if you guys want to check it out because honestly it's not as complicated as it seems all right so number 16 this one's a lot easier unless you don't like changing out furniture and what i'm talking about is rearranging furniture and not just rearranging furniture in a given space because you can definitely move your sofa to one side of the room and your side chairs to another you can flank the fireplace instead you can move the buffet in your dining room to a different area you can change the orientation of your dining room those are all great things and will update your space give it a fresh new look and it will feel like it's brand new because not everything is in its usual place however you can also rearrange rooms and that's what we did we actually switched out our living space with our dining space and it currently works for us right now even though i was perfectly fine with the way that it was before and switching out the function of rooms will freshen up the space allow you to use it in a different way and again if you don't like it you can always switch it back all right for number 17 we are talking about creating accent walls and you can do this in a variety of ways and this can be done when painting your walls is just not enough of an update you want something with bigger impact and something that will bring focus to this one area of your space this could be anything from adding wallpaper to adding a mural to stenciling a wall or even adding a faux brick as you see right behind me we did this in our master bedroom and it looks amazing it really changed the look of our room in addition to changing the color of the walls i wanted a nice focal space and since our house is actually four-sided brick having an exterior wall that looked like it was brick made perfect sense and it also added that very nice rustic cottage farmhouse feel that i was looking for so there's so many ways that you can bring focal point to a room and really change up the look of your space by adding one really special wall all right and for my final one today number 18 is very simple and you're gonna love it because it involves shopping it is actually going a thrift store shopping or even looking on a facebook marketplace you know sometimes we can really find some gems and some things that are very special at thrift stores i find them all the time whether it's something that you are going to give it a facelift paint it change it up a little bit or even change the usage of it because we all know there's so many ways to use certain items or you can also just find something really special that looks perfectly the way it is and you can add it on to your existing decor and it will elevate the space because not only are you adding something special you're also adding something new to the space so you'll have something else that you can focus on a conversation piece something that's not so expensive and you're buying something used which sometimes when it comes to furniture you'll find that the way they used to make furniture was so much better quality than the things that you get today and getting something very special like that in your home with a lot of value in it is absolutely amazing instead of just buying something brand new all the time we've actually had this happen to our furniture we've bought brand new and it didn't last as long but i'll buy something very cheap at a thrift store and it will last me so many years so honestly going out taking the time and finding a hidden treasure here or there will actually be so much better than buying a brand new plus it's always good to save money and spend less when you're out buying for your home so that's it for this list those are 18 different ways that you can update your home without breaking the bank now you don't have to do all of these you don't have to just do one of these you can do even a combination of these and the results will be such a beautiful and updated space and i hope this gave you guys some ideas some food for thought next time you're out shopping for certain things like textiles or just give you a different perspective on what you can do with what you already have so i hope you genuinely enjoyed this and if you did please make sure to give this video a thumbs up thank you so much to hoover for partnering with me on this video don't forget to check out the link in my description box for that carpet cleaner as well make sure you subscribe before you leave and don't forget i will see you here in the next home decor and diy video until then adios [Music]
