Incredible Mini v Lotus track battle at Goodwood

is that 2-liter 911 now he's one of the drivers who is more familiar with the car because he's been racing two liter 911s in that series last 18 months or so but nick swift anything that's basically a mini is meat and drink to him and the mini marcos is basically the mini he is hauling up behind the lotus elan as they come out of the chicane he's within a car length by the end of the straight he'll be seven or eight car lengths back as they turn into the first corner now already i'm sure nick swift is planning exactly where he's going to die from the elan and i think it's going to be into the chicane of the final lap if he can get enough of a run through woodcut and maybe try and get the alarm to work its tires a little too hard oh hang up in it right on the inside he had a little nose on the inside through the first corner of madrid now as they sweep through ford water in this ford water trophy race the mini marcos of nick swift the blue and yellow car all over the back and lotus alan off robert barry qualifying speed 134 134.39 for robert barry 134.75 for nick swift so he's giving away something like 15 hundredths of a second on a lap but you wouldn't know it from this swift has just uh hopped over the inside curve here at some mary's is absolutely on it the eso revolter was quickest in a straight line richard evans at 130 miles an hour down the eleventh straight goodness me they're probably taking an awful lot of stopping he probably just gets to 130 and then several hundred meters from the corner is looking for some retardation it's not a small car and it probably doesn't have the greatest brakes they'll get into traffic and uh that's what it may well be that he can uh okay there's the mini marcos coming up the side of the elan the lands are very very wielding tools of that cruciform chassis the 1600 cc uh alley-headed twin cam motor in the front big swift's got a run on the inside and there is traffic in front yeah this is going to be his opportunity isn't it when they catch a slower car the leader is always at a disadvantage yeah the lan engine will make around 180 horsepower something like that which not even yeah the swift can magic out of a bmc a series but he's got a lot lighter car yeah he'll be about 40 horsepower show up shy somewhere around 130 840 41 horsepower from a swift tune engine so he's not giving away an awful lot as you say it is a slightly lighter car and so it'll pick up a fraction quicker but he's he's going to have to try it out breaking the land and that's not going to be easy either so nick swift's still chasing down the other side eleven again oh and every time he gets more of an overlap for a little longer but every time that twin cam comes on song and just pulls itself clear and the slow reliance sabre for the slower car he shakes his head this is going to be a frustrating battle one that he knows is going to be hard to win that was daniel they were going by the red elite with the white it's got a stripes marcos in both mirrors almost simultaneously nick swift is moving around so much behind our race leader robert barry leaders closing on number 14 911 swift mini marcos this time with the inside line again in just the wrong place as they get some mary's then the road turns to the right and the advantage once more falls to the land as they come out of lavant diving inside peter gerker there with the porsche 911 and out onto the straight again frustration for nick swift before they get with you [Music] i already have to leave on the brakes get on the curb because the door was just squeezed in his face but uh it is still the alarm just which holds sway going down into laven's corner for this the tenth time and this is fabulous stuff both giving each other perfect racing room swift's got even more than overlap this time as they come out eleven the double right-hander plays to his strengths but the lavender straight yeah go on then son if you go and go says swifty he is loving every minute of this this is why you get into racing door handles a door handle with equal or different machinery you don't care but somebody who's enjoying it as much as you this is exactly what you want when you start racing at nick swift all over the back of the lotus again down to the chicane and again it's only run for one car yeah but there's some slipstream here to be had and uh you can see the land frustratingly goes away he waves his hand with inevitability yeah but the lotus again uses that twin cam power to just pull itself back in front just hasn't got the pace on the straight agility and traffic may be he's gone through the inside here but agility and traffic may well prove to be the ultimate arbiter ethnic swift is to win this one hank comes out of the window come on son off you go he knows the legend is coming back under straight line speed in a race of equals like the minis race at the members meeting he definitely knows that he's in a field that he can dominate the lotus just with a sort of lazy blink of the left-hand eye the the revolving eye just popped up a little there and has popped back down and again as they come out i just out start lap i don't know how many now that eleven of the race is 25 minutes encounter seven and a half minutes left to go so they'll probably get another five laps in a couple of laps ago and seems to lean alarmingly through here this time again swift goes up the outside coming out of the corner into the compression he goes now is that going to prevent the alarm from getting across and taking the racing line no it's not but it's up the inside here where the little mini marcos goes through onto the apex and again they're side by side onto the lavender straight and again traffic in front and somehow nick swift is going to have to try and box the race leader robert barry in with the traffic but he's he doesn't have the speed on his side again and there's not enough of it in the concentrated groups didn't quite open up but yeah the traffic is widely spaced they're coming back towards you mark sits and mary's [Music] yes here they are and uh again this time it's liner stern through here and uh dick swift goes again for that right you can't help thinking he'll try something different on the last lap he's selling this so hard but actually he's selling every corner so hard with the mini marcos the blue and yellow mini marcos back and the the mini marcos pogo's through with the inside uh left rear wheel off the ground in the final minute of the race is this lap 16 the final lap of the race it will be last hope for nick swift last hope to hold on for robert barry nick swift on the inside as they come out of the double right hand lavende the alan will stretch his legs down the laven strait can swift stay close enough to have a lunge into the chicane he's got no assistance from traffic the checkered flag waits time has run out for nick swift and the mini marcos the lotus again the lazy left eye pops up on the straight but as he gets into wood coats here comes nick swift it's their room for much damage he's gonna have a look but robert barry knows that's coming he takes the inside line it's going to be as close as a pocket handkerchief of the tender crash it is victory for the lotus elan of robert barry second and for mick swift in the mini marcos a sentence you won't hear very often and third place for josh files the pole sitter in the tr4
