[Music] hey guys if you want to have a faster draw from inside the waistband the first thing we have to do is learn to slow down and so what we're out here doing today with the HST team on our annual instructor development course is we're on this journey to make ourselves more efficient we thought we'd bring you along for the ride and one of the things that we're about to do is one of the first drills we do every single time we show up to the range this morning and we start to do a warm-up and the warm-up is called the DeLorean drill so we're going to start drawing our guns here in a second and we want to go fast but we're not allowed to yet the reason why is because we want to develop this neural pathway properly I want to do it safely because this is inherently dangerous what we're about to do when we start especially breaking into sub one second draws we have to slow down we got to make this little thing called the motor cortex and the prefrontal cortex in your brain connect and how we do that is going extremely slow so we don't miss any of the steps in between now I add speed on top of that guess what happens I still feel like I'm going in slow motion which is why they titled this drill the DeLorean somebody in our class at one point in time said they felt like they were in a time machine because they had so much time left over well that's not because literally you have more time it's because in your brain you're starting to learn to control it so what we're going to do is I'm going to demonstrate this entire drill for you and then together as a team we're all going to get online and show you what it looks like with a whole entire team so as a disclaimer first I wouldn't really recommend you jumping up here and starting with this drill especially if you're a new shooter you want to definitely have your foundation down your grip your stance your eyes trigger control so that way your foundation is set in the event that something happens you can quickly diagnose and stop especially at speed that's the first thing the second thing is is once we start this just relax and go slow there should be no tension in this at all as far as the target goes there's a 12 inch combat effective Zone that I'm going to be using here at three yards just to hold myself accountable now I want to stay tighter than that obviously but this is my combat effective zone for fast short engagements when I'm trying to save my life or save somebody else's life all right how I'm going to run this demonstration have Jared come up here with a shot timer and he's going to run me through this whole process and as Travis alluded to earlier he's going to do this painfully slow so I've got five seconds as a par time on the shot timer and his only requirement is to use that entire time he needs to be moving the entire time he doesn't need to draw the gun quickly and settle and wait for that five seconds to come his intent is to break the shot at full extension utilizing all five seconds it's going to appear as if he's just moving in slow motion five four three two one so what we're gonna do here is we're gonna guess the time as well so if you have a friend or you have a a camera or something and you can do that I would guess the time so in this case I'd say I was a little slow a little bit delayed uh probably by about a tenth of a second so it was a 512. okay so I'm within two one hundredths of the time so we're not only he's not going oh good job you did it in five seconds no I have to guess what my time is when you're working with a partner so even if I'm way off let's say I was 20 30 40 off I still want to guess that because I'm making something out of this this repetition all right one more time at five stand by five four three two one so that time I deliberately paused just a little bit more and I was over about 10. 506. okay so still within four 100 of the time and how we work this if you're within a tenth of the second so we're at five so if you're 5 10 or 490 and you're in that 20 split range that is incredible that's good okay so don't don't get down on yourself if you're not nailing the time to 100th of a second all right now we're going to go down to four seconds four seconds stand by four three two one so again a little bit over four Seventeen four eleven four eleven so this is why we guessed because I thought I was a little slower than I actually was all right so I'm gonna do that one more time and notice I'm counting out loud as well so the first time you do this it's very good to count out loud especially if you're used to playing a musical instrument maybe you've been in a band or something maybe you've marched in the military or whatever we use all these types of ditties and drills and metronomes like musicians use to stay in time so that's again why we're doing this okay so now I'm going to count out loud to be my own metronome four seconds stand by four three two one and you can see how that sounded a little bit more on I'm gonna call it I'm gonna take a guess four on the on the spot for on the spot okay because that felt perfect that's like that perfect lap the racer does or that perfect beat that the drummer does and that's what we're trying to do here so take your life and put it into your shooting don't just stop shooting into your life as we always say let's go to three seconds seconds stand by three two one 301. 296 296 okay so still within five one hundredths of a second more time at three stand by three two one three flat 299 299 all right let's go to two seconds two seconds and you can see I'm I probably look on even on camera like I'm still in slow motion because I am now at the two second mark this is where a lot of people start stressing out going I only have two seconds like you should be able to get a gun out in two seconds or less during concealed carry draw I think you should want to go way faster than that and watch how slow two seconds actually looks stand by one two one fire so I drag that out on purpose I over exaggerated it so I'm at a 220 ish 215. 215 so not as bad but I'm dragging that out because I can always adjust and now I'm gonna now I'm gonna turn it on just a little bit more stand by one two one you can see that was a little early probably uh 96. 88. hey yeah so that was way too early so I want to do that one one more time because I don't like it and that's important for you to do don't be in a hurry to go fast especially if you're messing up with time I'll go back up to three seconds if I have to bye two one [Music] and that's just a little bit over the two Mark probably a 205 208 208 so I'm feeling good with that so we're gonna go down to one and a half seconds now I'm not going to take a whole second off obviously stand by one [Music] still look like I'm moving slow I feel like I'm moving slow but I was a little too fast so I'm probably a 134 to 140 range 140 140. okay one more time Stan bye Juan see how I purposely drug it out even if I'm going a little too slow I'd rather go slow than be too fast at this point so I'm gonna say 162. 160. okay so I'm on so good as long as you're guessing it you're still doing a great job one second on the clock now at this point as you start to put one second on a clock and you're getting into the more what people would consider an advanced application speeds in the event that you draw a gun and you get a thumb in there or your gun starts to go out of your hands drop the gun let it go don't ever try to catch a falling gun and if you get to that point abort your draw safely and start over guys that's why we're out here is to make sure we're doing this safely and correct one second and bye one a little bit of a bottle there yep so even though I had a bobble I'm still going to call 119. 125 okay stand by one now you can see I'm starting to put a little bit more speed on especially from concealment I've got a little bit more to do um and of course you want to practice all different types of techniques when you do this so that's a 102 90. little too fast all right let's do that one more time one more time nail the one second stand by one I feel good 101 101. okay once I nail that now I can start to push into a little bit faster speeds we go 90s 80s 70s 60s if you can get there safely obviously and at this point if you're starting to already get exhausted and you guys if you ever went into a Golfing Range and hit a bunch of balls what happens you get fatigued in like 10 or 20 balls and but you still try to get through that whole bucket do not do that go off take a break and then come back and finish so I'm going to do one more rep just to show you total control stand by so that's running sub 75s now but about 75 76 okay so we're starting to push into that level of speed at this point you want to maintain total control so I'm going to do that even faster this time stand by all right so no matter how fast you go that's running what 70 63. 63. I'm still able to reset the trigger I'm still in control of the trigger I'm still in control of the gun I checked my grip at the end it felt good so if you're not able to diagnose all the steps as you're going you need to go back up a level or maybe many levels because if you were going to the gym for example what are we going to do the motion before the muscle so if you can't do the motion you have no business doing the muscle so out here especially when we're using Firearms we got to be safe guys so hopefully that helps with the demonstration there what I'd like to do now is I'm going to go ahead and run the guys and the gals and we're going to do this all together as a team and you can see what it looks like when everybody Nails it on the time and you'll also see if they don't so let's give it a shot all right guys line it up on the three yard line you should already be gassed up from earlier but go ahead and check your weapons and then while your weapons are out go ahead and establish your natural point of aim your kinesthetic alignment making sure your hips are straight forward draw with your eyes closed open your eyes and see where your sights are if your sights are not on the target you want to shoot move your body not the gun all right your prep time has ended uh the first process is five seconds five seconds for one shot stand by five four three two one all right so that is two shots registered a 4.99 and a 5 15. so that means every single person here is within that two tenths of a second time frame so good job and you can hear that one shot it's like a crack okay so if you are doing it with friends or something it's actually a fun competition to do as well all right guys good job one more time at five and I'm counting out loud just as your reference stand by five four three two one that registered one shot on the shot timer guess what it was 4.99 so everybody just did a 4.99 all right that means you graduate to the next speed four seconds stand by four three two one 388 and a 410. so just a bit outside of that range let's go and do that one more time four three two one one shot registered at 407. good job going down to three seconds three seconds stand by three two one a 292 to a 318 so we had one outside there let's do that again relax three seconds stand by three two one one shot registered at 305. good job guys going down to two seconds and as you can tell everybody still looks like they're in slow motion everybody feels like they're in slow motion here we go two seconds stand by one two one 198 to a 216. not bad everybody's within the two tents but I want to see that tightened up just a little bit more two seconds again stand by one two one you see I'm changing my tone it might help with with friends or or students 196 to a 206. everybody was within a tenth one more time at two seconds stand by one two one that one early down there who was it all right good job Scott that was a 196 186 and then everybody else was 197. good job all right you know what that means we're moving down to 1.5 seconds here we go stand bye one all right 143 Jared since you called that out not too early and a 154 and then Ben yes you are correct 178. all right let's tighten it up stand bye one there it is 157 157 on the shot clock one second stand by one oh three who was last 113 not bad Jamie okay not bad we're still within almost a tenth let's do it again stand by one 102 and a one twenty six good job Brandon all right guys good job let's bring it into the center and uh let's do a little debrief so we call that the DeLorean drill the DeLorean process of scaling time in your head now let's not forget the actual purpose of our draw practice it's not just to chase speed it's to master the Integrity of the grip because if you draw a gun and you have you don't have a grip you have nothing so don't take your eyes off of that goal just learn how to use time control time in your head because we all want to be fast but we would rather be efficient because the natural byproduct of efficiency is speed so just keep working on that control that time in your brain and be sure you got a rock solid grip guys hope you got something out of this today just make sure you stay deliberate and be safe doing this because inherently it is dangerous drawing a gun especially at speed thanks for joining us out here on our annual instructor development training in Florida with the Haley Strategic Training team I'm Travis Haley this is the HST team keep making the world a better place stay sharp be safe and die free thank you [Music]
