I get it, it's BYU, it's acapella, it's preppy white dudes, but this song meant the world to me as I approached my faith crisis. There is so much more music out there to appreciate, and this is far from the greatest song ever written. I'm just having a moment right now, I guess. Music was my life, and much of it died with my religious belief.
Regardless of your faith or lack of belief...this is some really fine stuff. My first time with this group and this song. This is as good as anything out there (for this style).
I don't want to judge...but my gaydar is beeping really loud with 75% of these stripling lads.
Thanks for sharing. Christ still works as a symbol/metaphor, independent of literal or historical belief. We all hurt and need healing in one way or another. Following Christ (however you end up defining him/it) means treating others kindly, forgiving freely, loving the brokenhearted, and respecting individuals as free agents in their own lives. You don't need a church or a fairy tale to get behind that.
This is beautiful - and I get it about music, and the way devotional music in particular moves us. I grew up in other churches (and was always in choirs), and music was a joy to me.
Maybe, when you've healed a bit more, you can visit some other churches and enjoy the music their. It was very healing for me to find a great church nearby (not LDS) that had amazing music at every service. It told me those joys were still there for me, and (since I still have faith in a Creator and I follow Christ's teachings), it told me there are many beautiful places of worship that still put me in that special place through their music and through the communities of love.
Reminds me of my old primary colors CD!!
That's really beautiful. Chills to the back! What a tremendously talented and gifted vocal group that is. Thanks.
You don't need to miss it...it's still out there. Personally, I found that my definition of 'devotional' music was able to broaden once I left tscc.
Imo, now that we're no longer bound by the same constraints of style and instrumentation, we can allow ourselves (at last) some Mahalia or the many many great classical works that were "too Catholic/Protestant" for morm worship. Here's Mozart's Mass in c minor.
Or go to other cultures and belief systems entirely. Here's a contemporary band of pagans, Faun, performing an ancient hymn to Gaia, the Great Mother.
I don't know if any of this tickles your fancy, but I hope it at least does encourage you to explore. Regardless of your inclinations, there's really so much good spiritual music outside of mormondom. Happy listening!
I have been struggling with this too. I am a huge music person and many of the songs get stuck in my head still. That might be the only thing I miss about the church at all.
We used to have a mocking cheer when I was at the U. "BYU...BYU...where the girls are girls...and the boys are too".
