well we knew<font color="#E5E5E5"> within a week of the</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> first</font> crash that something very<font color="#CCCCCC"> different was</font> wrong with this plan because<font color="#E5E5E5"> Boeing</font> issued a service bulletin warning pilots around<font color="#E5E5E5"> the world</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that this new flight</font> control system which we later<font color="#E5E5E5"> give the</font> name<font color="#CCCCCC"> M</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> Cass</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that there was something</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">wrong</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> with it</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that had gone</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> wrong</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> in</font> that flight they knew the problem and they thought they had<font color="#E5E5E5"> a solution that nobody needed</font> we didn't<font color="#E5E5E5"> need to</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> grind the plans</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> pilots</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">all over the world were not aware</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> of</font> this<font color="#E5E5E5"> they knew about the flaws</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> I</font> approached<font color="#E5E5E5"> Boeing before the Ethiopian</font> crash with my story<font color="#E5E5E5"> about the flaws in</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">the</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> system</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> but I wasn't</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> telling them</font> anything<font color="#E5E5E5"> they didn't know they knew all</font> about<font color="#E5E5E5"> that but the point</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> is they thought</font> that the instructions they'd given pilots would fix<font color="#CCCCCC"> that so it was</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> no it</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">wasn't a safety issue and then a few</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">days</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> later the plane crashed so it's a</font> piece of<font color="#CCCCCC"> software some people have been</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">saying that oh</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> the plans fundamentally</font> unstable<font color="#CCCCCC"> and it's just being mandated</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">with a piece</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> of software</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> I don't buy</font> that<font color="#CCCCCC"> it's it's it's</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> not</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> unusual to</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> use a</font> flight control<font color="#CCCCCC"> software to make</font> adjustments<font color="#CCCCCC"> to an airplanes flying</font> characteristics<font color="#E5E5E5"> and that's what they</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> did</font> here<font color="#E5E5E5"> the the problem is that the way it</font> was designed<font color="#E5E5E5"> seems to have these</font> fundamental flaws in it so that in the lion air crash<font color="#E5E5E5"> and in the Ethiopian</font> crash<font color="#E5E5E5"> the system kicked in what never</font> should<font color="#CCCCCC"> have and nobody</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> picked it up in</font> that design process<font color="#E5E5E5"> nobody picked it up</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">and</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> it's nobody saw the potential of</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">what could happen</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> if it failed or some</font> aspect<font color="#E5E5E5"> of it failed</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> correct and that</font> seems like terrible<font color="#E5E5E5"> feeling</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> I mean</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> the</font> most basic things like having<font color="#E5E5E5"> the system</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">triggered by a single sensor which</font> something<font color="#E5E5E5"> could go wrong with now this</font> sensor it's an angle<font color="#E5E5E5"> of attack</font> sir it's a little<font color="#CCCCCC"> via</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> on the outside of</font> the plan and we don't know what happened <font color="#E5E5E5">on the lion air crash</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> we know it</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> we know</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">it</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> the sensor was faulty what is</font> shocking<font color="#E5E5E5"> if what</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> he is totally shocking</font> is that<font color="#CCCCCC"> it took one sensor to bring down</font> a plane<font color="#E5E5E5"> right that is that is certainly</font> one of the huge issues<font color="#E5E5E5"> in this case the</font> fact<font color="#CCCCCC"> that the system was triggered by</font> one sensor<font color="#E5E5E5"> but it's not the only</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> issue</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> I</font> mean<font color="#E5E5E5"> the fact is</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that the whole</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> system</font> was designed<font color="#E5E5E5"> in a way with my story on</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">this highlighted several other flaws</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">including the fact that</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> it kicked in</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">repeatedly when it</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> wasn't that</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that</font> should never have<font color="#E5E5E5"> been allowed</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> to happen</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">you know you're talking</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> about a system</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">that's designed to save the plan</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> in a</font> very extreme circumstance<font color="#E5E5E5"> and then get</font> it out<font color="#E5E5E5"> of</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that circumstance and yet</font> somehow it was allowed<font color="#CCCCCC"> to be designed so</font> that it kept doing it<font color="#E5E5E5"> if it kept</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">repeating it this</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> nose-down movement</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">effectively with no limit</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> to it it</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> is</font> like well the pilots<font color="#E5E5E5"> lost control</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> they</font> could not control<font color="#CCCCCC"> the plane</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> this system</font> took control<font color="#E5E5E5"> from the pilots they didn't</font> know what<font color="#E5E5E5"> was happening</font> certainly the lion air pilots didn't know what was happening appeared to<font color="#E5E5E5"> be very confused and the</font> system<font color="#CCCCCC"> just</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> more than done until it</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">plunged into the sea</font> the<font color="#CCCCCC"> Ethiopian</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> pilots I think did know</font> what<font color="#E5E5E5"> was happening</font> tried<font color="#CCCCCC"> to follow the instructions Boeing</font> had given them and they came up<font color="#CCCCCC"> short</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">not the pilots the instructions came up</font> short<font color="#E5E5E5"> so yeah do you get a sense that</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">we've lifted the lid shone a light on</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">Boeing that desperately needed to</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> be</font> exposed<font color="#E5E5E5"> well it's it's a terrible crisis</font> for Boeing because Boeing's <font color="#E5E5E5">husband stellar it's widely regarded as</font> you know one of the top<font color="#CCCCCC"> engineering</font> companies<font color="#E5E5E5"> it's it's a big shock to</font> Boeing's reputation<font color="#E5E5E5"> it's a big hit the</font> stock price everything<font color="#E5E5E5"> people's faith</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> in</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">the company has been</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> hit by this and so</font> it's a<font color="#E5E5E5"> very difficult</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> moment for</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> the</font> company<font color="#E5E5E5"> will they recover</font> I think they'll recover<font color="#E5E5E5"> because</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> they</font> have to they're not<font color="#E5E5E5"> gonna stop flying</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">they're not gonna stop making plans but</font> they've<font color="#E5E5E5"> got</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> to fix some things and they</font> may<font color="#CCCCCC"> have to change attitudes</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> change</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">structures they've got to</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> convince the</font> world that<font color="#E5E5E5"> this can't happen again</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">safety is</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> the number one priority but</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">it's just taken</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> for granted</font> you don't know says my bottom line then right so the dollars and cents<font color="#E5E5E5"> yeah well</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">a manager won't get extra money when his</font> plane doesn't crash it's just expected<font color="#CCCCCC"> that the flame won't</font> crash<font color="#E5E5E5"> you will get extra</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> money if he</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">delivers the plan sooner or on schedule</font> and at lower cost<font color="#CCCCCC"> would you get</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> back on</font> board<font color="#CCCCCC"> one of Boeing 737 mixes I think</font> one if the grinding is lifted when the <font color="#CCCCCC">grounding is lifted it it will only be</font> done when it's safe again so yes I would <font color="#E5E5E5">get on one when it's lifted hello I'm</font> Liz<font color="#E5E5E5"> Hayes thanks for watching to keep up</font> with the
