well we knew within a week of the first crash that something very different was wrong with this plan because Boeing issued a service bulletin warning pilots around the world that this new flight control system which we later give the name M Cass that there was something wrong with it that had gone wrong in that flight they knew the problem and they thought they had a solution that nobody needed we didn't need to grind the plans pilots all over the world were not aware of this they knew about the flaws I approached Boeing before the Ethiopian crash with my story about the flaws in the system but I wasn't telling them anything they didn't know they knew all about that but the point is they thought that the instructions they'd given pilots would fix that so it was no it wasn't a safety issue and then a few days later the plane crashed so it's a piece of software some people have been saying that oh the plans fundamentally unstable and it's just being mandated with a piece of software I don't buy that it's it's it's not unusual to use a flight control software to make adjustments to an airplanes flying characteristics and that's what they did here the the problem is that the way it was designed seems to have these fundamental flaws in it so that in the lion air crash and in the Ethiopian crash the system kicked in what never should have and nobody picked it up in that design process nobody picked it up and it's nobody saw the potential of what could happen if it failed or some aspect of it failed correct and that seems like terrible feeling I mean the most basic things like having the system triggered by a single sensor which something could go wrong with now this sensor it's an angle of attack sir it's a little via on the outside of the plan and we don't know what happened on the lion air crash we know it we know it the sensor was faulty what is shocking if what he is totally shocking is that it took one sensor to bring down a plane right that is that is certainly one of the huge issues in this case the fact that the system was triggered by one sensor but it's not the only issue I mean the fact is that the whole system was designed in a way with my story on this highlighted several other flaws including the fact that it kicked in repeatedly when it wasn't that that should never have been allowed to happen you know you're talking about a system that's designed to save the plan in a very extreme circumstance and then get it out of that circumstance and yet somehow it was allowed to be designed so that it kept doing it if it kept repeating it this nose-down movement effectively with no limit to it it is like well the pilots lost control they could not control the plane this system took control from the pilots they didn't know what was happening certainly the lion air pilots didn't know what was happening appeared to be very confused and the system just more than done until it plunged into the sea the Ethiopian pilots I think did know what was happening tried to follow the instructions Boeing had given them and they came up short not the pilots the instructions came up short so yeah do you get a sense that we've lifted the lid shone a light on Boeing that desperately needed to be exposed well it's it's a terrible crisis for Boeing because Boeing's husband stellar it's widely regarded as you know one of the top engineering companies it's it's a big shock to Boeing's reputation it's a big hit the stock price everything people's faith in the company has been hit by this and so it's a very difficult moment for the company will they recover I think they'll recover because they have to they're not gonna stop flying they're not gonna stop making plans but they've got to fix some things and they may have to change attitudes change structures they've got to convince the world that this can't happen again safety is the number one priority but it's just taken for granted you don't know says my bottom line then right so the dollars and cents yeah well a manager won't get extra money when his plane doesn't crash it's just expected that the flame won't crash you will get extra money if he delivers the plan sooner or on schedule and at lower cost would you get back on board one of Boeing 737 mixes I think one if the grinding is lifted when the grounding is lifted it it will only be done when it's safe again so yes I would get on one when it's lifted hello I'm Liz Hayes thanks for watching to keep up with the latest from 60 minutes Australia make sure you subscribe to our Channel you can also download the 9 now app for full episodes and other exclusives 60 minutes content
