all right everyone I am in rural Illinois uh let me show you on the map here let's see you can see I'm right here if you were to cut Illinois in half I would be in the southern half kind of in the middle of the state St Louis is down here to the South and the west of course you've got Chicago the biggest city in the state up north Indianapolis straight to the east I am in a small town well small City called Panna p-a-n-a well there's a spelling on the screen I guess I'm pronouncing it right I'm going to say Panna uh the town in 1960 had 6 400 people today there are 5200 I'm going to drive into downtown it is in this direction you are probably seeing Christmas decorations I think you can see them yeah they're still up it is March 13th today is a Monday but they still have their Christmas decorations up anyway I uh I gotta tell you some stuff here so I'm going to uh pull over and stop and get out on foot let me tell you guys it is cold today [Music] 29 degrees that's negative two Celsius it's about 10 A.M uh I'm out on foot now for this little road trip I probably won't get out of the car too much because the wind is blowing and it is ice cold anyway look at this beautiful theater though looks like it is still in operation because Creed 3 just came out it's gorgeous isn't it you'd love to see that yeah see the Christmas decorations still up mid-march anyway okay so the age of this town the median age is 42. gender breakdown 52 female 48 male per capita income 24 700. that's around 475 a week a median household income 50 800 almost a thousand dollars a week now the race breakdown 97 percent White one percent Asian and the last two percent are other poverty level really low 11.7 percent U.S average is uh 12.6 and median home values are 75 100. so we'll get out and look at a few houses here near downtown pretty quick but one other thing crime 24 incidents per 1000 U.S average is 23. so crime is right about the same as a country as a whole so there's all that and my fingers are frozen so I am going to get in the car and we'll start uh we'll start the journey well let's say I'm up about a block out of downtown that's Lovely isn't it got some brick roads here you can tell this uh street is beautiful when it's warm I mean really beautiful see the trees okay here is a gas station uh near downtown 's right there by the way price of gas 359 for a gallon gallon of unleaded County Market so there's that uh of course there's a Dollar General that's pretty much a given though isn't it I got a Walgreens too they got all kinds of stuff here they call themselves the city of roses here there's a big mural depicting it as such that's pretty nice isn't it a little bit more of downtown here and it's it's pretty bad shape Panthers so that must be the high school team anyway there's uh it's a main street of downtown another look down it well they got a bar here downtown proudly proclaiming that they sell PBR drink a lot of that back in my college days okay everybody I am pulling into the town of omen the numbers really tell the story of this town we'll begin with the median age uh 66. further breakdown of that tells you more 76 percent of the people who live in this town are 60 and older meanwhile people who are 20 to 29 years of age only make up one percent of the population yeah there's pretty much all of downtown there so what does that tell you it tells you that uh people who are young are basically leaving town when they grow into adulthood leaving behind their parents who are aging and uh unless something changes you know within 20 years when the people who are 60 now are 80 this will become a ghost town for all intensive purposes got a beautiful church here let's see race breakdown 100 percent White uh median household income is forty three thousand that's about 830 a week the poverty rate it's low 6.9 percent that's about half the U.S average honestly it's kind of a quaint little uh town or at least what I'm seeing so far it's a nice Street isn't it um you know there's only two or three streets in the town but anyway uh let's see a little bit more crime is surprisingly a little bit higher than what you would think it would be 29 per 1000 U.S average is 23. a median home value is 86 400. let's see I'm back out on the main road as far as I can tell this is the only business in town kind of looks like it it might be a bar of sorts and it says play Slots so I guess you can play some gaming machines in there gambling machines hmm it's interesting uh roof is caving in and you can see that well okay I'm gonna head to the next town okay everyone I am arriving at the town of Nokomis let's see Nokomis it's got about 2100 people in it Peak population was 100 years ago 1920. there were a little over 3 400 people median age is 36. let's see Ginger breakdown 53 female 47 male I am heading into downtown it looks like looks like it's straight up ahead anyway continuing on uh let's see race breakdown 98 White uh one percent Asian one percent mixed per capita income Thirty One Thousand eight hundred so that's about 600 a week median household income uh 55 500. 1067 a week so that's a pretty good number especially in a town where the cost of living is very low poverty is ten percent so that is below the national average as well crime 20 incidents per 1000 overall that's below the national average of 23. and a few people here downtown a handful of businesses here let's see why don't I just head straight into residential so I'm going to turn off here let's check out some houses median home value here is 69 700. wow under seventy thousand dollars we'll get you a house here so what do they look like let's see so far not too bad yeah it's a really nice houses here yeah these are wow big two-story homes brick roads this house is for sale if you want it a lot of lovely architecture unique St Louis Catholic Church would you look at that huge spire that's beautiful that is something what kind of architectural style do you think that is medieval possibly looking at the cross that's what I'm thinking medieval England era wow it's gorgeous and maybe this is the pastor's house next door that's really nice too and the brick matches if anybody else knows more be sure post a comment below and fill us in that is really interesting architecture the big porch that is wow I love that house I would love to fix that up well let's see I'm on the other side of the railroad tracks if you will see there's downtown back there cool Brick Street I've got some mobile homes here I don't think anybody lives in them though those may be empty I'm not sure what's going on here is that a business or is that someone's house well someone lives there there's a lot of stuff in that yard I would love to have a house that looks like that of course I would want modern plumbing and electricity and everything but I want it to look just like that that is beautiful hey is that a cat up there let's see if I can get my first cat siding can you guys see it there he is all right wandering off the road don't go too far fella all right I need to make you famous there he is uh white and gray can you guys see him oh he just jumped in there you saw him though didn't you yeah I get credit for that okay well I'm gonna head to the next town well let's see I'm making my way into the town of wit or perhaps the city of wit let's see wit in 1920 100 years ago there were 2 400 people here that's pretty good sized for that time today however 100 years later there are just over 600. so that is quite a a lot of population loss but anyway uh continuing on um let's see 46 years old is the median age gender breakdown 50 50. also roads are terrible at least coming into town uh let's see the race breakdown 99 white actually it's uh 99.4 if I remember it correctly and then a little less than a full percent black and that's it not even mixed let's see per capita income 25 000. it's about 480 a week and uh median household income it's thirty nine thousand three hundred and that is pretty low uh that's about 760 a week uh let's see sometimes people ask about fire department there it is they do have a fire department here anyway I'm approaching downtown I believe poverty rate here is 16.6 so that's a shade higher than the US average a little bit higher us average is a little over 12 percent looks like I'm heading into downtown now let's see crime very low in this town two incidents per 1000. two incidents reported last year no Town U.S average is 23. so wow crime is virtually non-existent here yeah let's go give you a look at this uh huh it says hole in the wall I wonder if that is a uh bar or at least used to be a bar anyway uh yeah I'm gonna make my way through downtown here then driving to residential now the median home value here is 50 000 even fifty thousand dollars will get you a house here that that's pretty cheap so knowing that information uh let's go check out uh a house or two or a residential street anyway right off the bat here though look at this house here is got a big three-car garage that's pretty nice you really need a three-car garage if you've got kids because uh at least I know at my house when both my kids started driving the cars were just all over the place is that empty it may be uh this one looks abandoned and empty you do see quite a bit of contrast here that's a big beautiful home there and right across the street got a mobile home with a lot of stuff out front pretty sure no one lives there and probably not there either I'm thinking well I think I've seen enough here so uh yeah I'm gonna head to the next town well let's see uh I'm about to uh enter the town of Irving let's see Irving Illinois the village of Irving it says there really that's all it is today there's about 370 people in the town Peak population was way back in 1870 and there were 750 people so it's about half that size now looks like I'm heading into downtown so I'll tell you some more median age 41. let's see 52 percent female 48 male this is the race breakdown 97 White one percent black one percent Hispanic one percent other so one percent mixed let's see per capita income eighteen thousand dollars a year that's about 346 dollars a week I'm gonna pull over and give you a good look at that mural as I'm here in downtown and uh look they have a little bank here I don't think that's open oh now it's a museum it says that's a small Museum anyway what else did I have for you uh let's see median household income is twenty nine thousand five hundred and sixty dollars a week that's that's really low any way you look at it poverty uh is 27.6 percent that is really high that's over twice higher than the U.S average children 17 and under it's 30 percent uh crime is a little bit higher here too 33 incidents per 1000 people U.S average is 23. you think they have good food there I'm not sure if that's open though let's see what else can I tell you well median home values I'll tell you that as we get ready to head into a little residential uh forty five thousand four hundred dollars forty five thousand dollars uh you can get a house here uh that's that's really low I was wondering what this building is uh looks like it's a church you think that's open I think it is anyway uh let me check out a street or two and then we'll go on from there cat sighting number two yeah now I know you can see him he's looking right at us how you doing fella you're gonna be famous buddy no you don't care that's the nature of cats they don't care about stuff like that anyway let's see uh there's what looks to be an abandoned home it's got a porch up there or a swing on the porch you see that hanging way up high that's interesting yeah let's see what else I can find yeah I do see this here looks like a haunted house doesn't it I hate to see that you could tell that was a beautiful home at one time I've got another one up here a little more of the same yeah that is um been setting empty for a long time and across the street here and another one oh you just wonder what happened okay well seeing enough here going to head to the next town well everyone I am entering Hillsboro oh this is an Old Bridge wow and that's something that's been there for a long time uh let's see uh the numbers for Hillsboro tell a very different story from the town's other towns we visited so far and I will tell you about it as I drive in uh let's see see this Casey's General Store that is the preeminent convenience store chain in the area by the way just to let you know they are in every town at least one anyway uh let's see Hillsboro start with the population there are 5 900 people here Peak population was in 2010 6200. so really hasn't lost much in the way of population median age is 40. now here's where things get interesting first of all the gender breakdown 68 percent male 32 percent female so wow you got two males for every one female in this town so the women have some options here even more interesting is of that 32 percent of women that is the population 12 of them are widowed so uh yeah it seems like there's a few single ladies in town anyway here's the race breakdown 79 White 15 black five percent Hispanic and then the remaining one percent is mixed so at more diverse town here per capita incomes twenty thousand four hundred that's about 390 a week median household income higher 64 000 a little over a little over 1200 a week poverty 16.5 that's not too bad a little bit higher children 17 and under it's 24 percent uh so that's a little on the high side another interesting number that sticks out only 36 percent of the population is married U.S average is 52. foreign pretty low 19 incidents per 1000 U.S average is 23. now I'm heading into downtown uh I'm liking what I see so far it looks really interesting doesn't it I do know there's a County Courthouse here that's uh sounds incredible to look at and I think I'm looking at it or we are looking at it right now at the End of the Street Yeah Montgomery County Courthouse you can sit there at the end of the street it was built in 1871 so wow that's a long time ago looks like it's in Immaculate condition too all right we're driving upon it now it is what they call Second Empire Style architecture it's also called Napoleon style so it takes its cues from late 1800s France definitely not something you see a lot of here or anywhere in the US but look at that that is a beautiful building whoo okay well yeah that's pretty cool how about let's check out uh residential area a street or two and uh we'll go on from there let's see there's the police department let me show you where I'm at just real quick you can see me down here now there's where the video started Panna and I just came down uh 16. and I'm going to cut up 48 here a couple more towns Raymond and Morris Morrisonville and here's Springfield that is where we're staying it's about an hour from here for those of you who Wonder I don't go to the outside part of towns I only go through downtowns and the neighborhoods and streets near downtown because they're just far more interesting uh you know the outer parts of town we're Taco Bells and stuff like that you know that looks the same everywhere but these part of towns look different from anywhere else so that's what I show in my videos uh that home is set and empty very interesting looking though isn't it I got it a pretty beautiful house here though that's a big house too look at those cool pillars awesome well uh wow I'm already almost back into downtown let me see what else I can find beautiful house there I love that porch another one there pretty nice homes here well let's see um like that big three-story house did I give you guys median home values I don't know I don't think I did they are 94 900. what do you think a house like that would go for here that's half a million in Dallas or more be interesting to see what that would sell for here where homes are a lot more inexpensive yeah that is that is beautiful what's it say Saint Agnes Catholic Church I'll tell you what those Catholics they know how to build churches anyway uh let's see yeah I'm gonna head to the next town now all right everyone I am arriving in the town of Raymond let's see Raymond Illinois well they got a Dollar General you can see that a couple gas stations all right let's see what the price is 349 a gallon here so there's that let's say the population there's about 950 people here Peak population was in 2010 there was a thousand people that's about the same let's see age is 38 median age gender breakdown 53 female 47 male uh here's the race breakdown 96 percent White uh two percent Asian and the last two percent is other let's see this should take me into downtown yeah that looks like it that looks like a small City downtown doesn't it for those of you who wonder about uh the fire department there it is looks like ambulance too I guess the well I don't know where the uh trucks are parked oh there they are there's the garage the garages all right well here we are downtown Raymond let's see per capita income 28 500. so that's about 550 a week median household income sixty thousand five hundred that's uh 11.63 a week so that's pretty good that number that sticks up uh here um 97 of the residents have graduated high school 97 U.S average is 85. so the folks are educated at least they got their High School diplomas for sure crimes a little high 26 per 1000 U.S average is 23. not super high but a little bit and as you can tell I am well I'm driving into residential so that will be a good time to tell you the median home value 98 600. let's see another number poverty 12.1 percent a little lower than the US average which is 12.6 yeah it's interesting uh looking place isn't it well your typical quiet small town it looks like kind of cool though we can just pull right up to the water tower that's pretty awesome oh it looks like I can just drive right by it sweet it's a little doorway down there I guess you could go inside you know I don't know anything about water towers I guess you can go inside there huh maybe someone else knows be cool uh I'll tell you what guys um so make sure this video doesn't get too long so uh I'm going to end this visit to this town here one more town that's coming up next well I'm entering the town of Morrisonville wow what a house would you look at that you just do not see houses like that anymore that is spectacular a turret there that is so cool well houses are already really interesting in this town having got downtown yet look at this oh these are beautiful well there's downtown right here well okay uh Morrisonville uh about a thousand people here 1910 over 100 years ago was Peak population 1200. so it's held pretty well median age 38. another really beautiful house let's see gender 52 male 48 female race breakdown 91 White 3 Hispanic six percent mixed interesting per capita income thirty thousand one hundred it's about 580 a week median household income so everybody all together in one house adds up to 59 700 a year 11 48 a week that's pretty good poverty is 16.4 now you can tell that's been there a long time yeah poverty 16.4 that's a little higher than the U.S average however children the children's poverty rates really high 17 and under it's 40 percent so that sticks out a little the crime rate really low three incidents per 1000 people last year U.S average 23. that's virtually no crime that's crazy see it get you a look over there in that direction there's some sort of interesting building this way I'm gonna go take a look now I'm gonna head into residential before I do that I'll tell you the median home values 86 400. so you can get a house here pretty cheap a beautiful Church First Presbyterian it says a couple famous people from here was sort of famous the guy who founded Steak and Shake his name is Augustus belt he was born here also the famous baseball player the professional baseball player catcher if I remember right I'll Unser he was born here as well I wonder where he almost think his house would be a kind of a museum he was a pretty big deal wow now this is a great house it needs some TLC for sure look at the chimney stack right up the middle that is a great old house Saint Maurice Catholic Church impressive yeah they almost always are wow you can tell this building's really old Manning and Manning poultry butter eggs I bet that's uh over 100 years old what do you guys think I want to check something here in downtown again real quick yeah I'm at this hardware store again it's got a sign on the front it says it's closed uh let's see wow can you read that due to passing of Ron we will be closed till further notice who do you think Ron is uh probably own the place huh wow that's some crazy stuff there well tell you what guys uh that's going to be it for this video we are heading to the notorious Infamous Gary Indiana next should be fun so I'll be looking for that
