hi guys welcome back to my channel i'm keri summer from the summer home and today is all about the bookshelves behind me they are an ikea billy bookcase hack and today i'm walking you through the step-by-step instructions on how you can recreate this in your own home we do have a blog post tutorial which i know you will find helpful as well and i'll be linking that below so let's get started we started here a blank wall in our newly built home the first thing we did was remove the baseboards from the back wall we removed them carefully because we knew we were going to be reinstalling them after the bookcases were built as you can see here in this video next we built a base for the bookshelves to sit on top of we did this because we wanted the bookshelves to have a custom built-in look and because we have nine foot ceilings if the bookshelves were sitting right on the floor it would have looked funny to have a larger piece of molding up on the top next we added trim pieces to the wall as well as the ceiling we did this so when it was time to add the finished molding as seen here in this video to the sides and the top it would have something to attach to this is the point in the project that you will want to call an electrician and plan for any lights that you may want to add later it's much easier to do it now before the bookshelves get installed by the way here's where we chose to put our light switches time to attach the assembled bookcases to the base you can see in this photo the molding that we attached to the walls we used l brackets shown in this photo to attach the bookcases to the base and here's another shot of the bookshelves installed next another trim piece was added to the top of the shelf so we could build a small pony wall that the light boxes and later the molding would attach to now it's time to attach the finished trim pieces in between each bookshelf on the top as well as the sides and here's a shot where you can see what it looked like before the crown molding was later added to the top and here's a photo of a trim piece that we added to the bottom of the shelves this is so there wouldn't be a gap in between the bookcase and the molding shown here and here's a photo where you can see the trim piece on the bottom and this is part of the project where i don't have a photo to show you but we added a trim piece here that as you can see runs across the whole facade of the bookshelf and it's the same thickness as the piece that we added here and this is so the doors would sit flush i get asked a lot about exactly what portions we painted so i'm showing that here we painted the insides of the bookshelves the top of the bookshelves and all the trim pieces that you see here we didn't paint the actual shelves the back or any of the doors we chose to fill all the pre-drilled shelf holes making our shelves permanent it can be done either way and here's what it looked like after we caulked filled now holes sanded painted and hung the doors and the last thing we did was to hang the lights and here are our shelves today we did this diy in 2016 so it's been over six years and our shelves still look brand new i wouldn't do anything differently we chose to do the doors on the bottom so we could hide the items that we wanted hidden behind closed doors like all of our office supplies and we also keep board games and a ton of books behind the other doors thank you so much for watching this video today if you have any questions make sure to check out the blog post tutorial which is linked in the caption and at the bottom of that blog post don't miss all the questions and answers there's also a frequently asked questions blog post linked at the bottom of the original post
