hey guys in this video i'm sharing how i diy my home office building with ikea alex drawers if you are looking to create your own workspace with lots of storage and at a low cost keep watching because this video is for you this ikea alex hack was a popular request ever since i post a photo on my instagram if you like to see what i'm working on next make sure to follow me on instagram by the way i do have a blog post with all the detailed instructions that i'll link in the description below so be sure to check that out so first let's talk about the space i have a small home office space that also serves as a craft room and a guest bedroom so to maximize no work space and achieve a custom look i created a built-in desk using ikea alex drawer units this whole project costs well under 500 which is really affordable this desk is for two people so originally i wanted to have three drawer units but i have a window that extends below a standard desk height and also i'm constrained with a closet door which were on the right of this wall so instead i use most of the space for a long desk and the lower the table height for the rest of the space so i can have a sewing look this ikea drawer unit has two types i chose the job file configuration because it allows me to organize all my files in one place so i don't need a separate file cabinet to add more storage i attached this floating shelf or pencil drawer you can call it to each of the table top now let's talk about the diy process so first let's talk about how you assemble those units so when you assemble the drawer unit it will be a lot easier if you leave the drawers out and for the floating shelf pencil drawer unit you will want to leave the top of the frame out because you'll have to attach the top of the frame to the table top separately i placed the two alex drawer units in the position and then added my table top to add support for this super long table top i added a long piece of wood and attached to the wall studs stat ikea has dust legs that are supposed to support any long tables but one i want to keep a cleaner look but two i also need a space to place my pistol drawers so i ended up using a different method and for the sewing table because it is floating i used three pieces of wood on the three sides to support the table top for my tabletop i created a custom top because i want a natural wood finish and ikea table tops were not long enough for my space anyway so i used two 4 feet by 8 feet plywood with fine finish and attached them together with the wood glue and screws i cut them to size and use wood veneer tape to finish the edges of the plywood so the whole tabletop will look like one piece of solid wood then i stained and sealed the entire table top to make it more durable to secure the table top i use a few out brackets to attach the table to the wall you can also use them to attach the drawer units to the table top as well now let's talk about pencil drawers before adding the pencil drawers make sure you are able to comfortably fit your legs within the pencil drawer in my case the space i have is perfect however my husband is very tall and he is not able to comfortably fit his legs under the pencil drawers if that's the case for you there are two things you can do first you can either skip the pencil drawer or you can raise the desk as a whole a few more inches by building a wood base then you can disguise the wood base using some sort of trims or baseboards you can check out my diy window seat video for instructions that i'll link the video in the description below to attach the pencil drawers first attach the top of the pencil drawer the one you left out during the assembly to the desktop and then add the rest of the drawer frames following ikea installation menu slide those drawers in and you are done for my sewing table i also attached pencil drawer frame to the left and the right supporting boards just because it was sandwiched between these two boards [Music] to make it look nice i cover all the gaps with a quarter inch mdf board and fill the gaps and also i paint an entire unit for multiple coats of the color of my choice because my sewing table is lower than a normal table so it is a bit tricky to find a chair at the right height so instead i trim a stool a few inches shorter to make it work i also made this drawer divider to keep my tools organized this is a long project and i'm trying to keep the video short and sweet so if you'd like to give this project a try be sure to check out my blog post which i'll link below it has all the detailed instructions and tips to make this project successful for you if you like this diy tutorial give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel also i'm posting a video tour of my home office soon so stay tuned thank you for watching and see you next time [Music] bye [Music] you
