well can a family share a legacy of faith today we'll take you inside one of the most beloved families in ministry to discover the trials triumphs and miracles they've experienced along the way but first joining me around the table is one of those family members April silence how are you doing great are you excited about this yesterday and very excited I kind of like her you like how are you Rebecca lamb I'm looking at this person's face right now and it's making me laugh I'm good mom good good and one day you'll say that about me you're doing the show you'll be like oh I love this person oh I will do that but I wouldn't say I don't know Marnie's hard about to graduate okay and praise the Lord indie rock how are you great excited about today's yes one of our favorite people who's been with us before she's back again with her new book if my heart could talk Dodi Osteen welcome yeah thank you for asking me again it's always good to have you we love having you well her story is on a faith and family and with the last name that is synonymous with victory and miracles it would be easy to assume it was an easy journey but that would be far from the truth take a look Dodi Osteen she's a woman who's worn many hats in her extraordinary life wife mother teacher and prayer warrior from being stricken with polio to battling liver cancer for Dodie life hasn't always been easy but God has always been faithful through it all the Osteen family has learned many lessons of Hope faith and love and Dodi Osteen is sharing a few of her favorites in her latest book if my heart could talk well in her new book if my heart could talk Dodie Osteen takes readers on a trip through her family's life before and during ministry revealing the trials and triumphs along the way you know the Christian walk is a journey and the Bible says it rains on the just and the unjust and although we serve a God who is faithful to carry us through everything we are gonna have trials so - in this lifetime and you've had a few I had overcome but your book talks about if my heart could talk if your heart could talk would it say that God is faithful oh if it could talk it would scream out God is faithful and Jesus is always there he never sleeps and he never has changed and he never ever will my heart is so full of the things that God has done for me tell me about writing this book because you could have written it years before but why was the timing good for now do you thing I think it's just God's timing you know sometime we pray for things and they don't come to pass right away but then we're glad in the future that they did you know thank God that didn't happen when I wanted it to because it was the right time when John went to heaven in 1999 God put in my heart to write a book and I thought I've been so blessed I've got this had this wonderful husband I've got a wonderful life I've been healed I have all these children have this church and God spoke to my heart and said write a book and I just had mentioned I wish I could get everything out of my heart that I feel into a book someday and so God said well I want you to entitle it if my heart could talk and so I just kind of had it on my mind for all those years and finally I mentioned it to the children and they said well we'll see about making it happen well it was about 14 or 15 years later because that's been in the making you know little things little pieces here and there but it just showed me and it came out the right time Johnny the very right time because it would have been too soon for it you know if it come out sooner so that's just a little notice to me that instead of always asking God and expecting it right then to be patient if it doesn't come and to be glad because sometime things would not be the right thing if they happened when we pray for so tell us a little bit about Dodi growing up and how you came to know the Lord well I grew up in a home I was the only child my mother was not able to have other children wonderful mother and daddy my daddy had a sad life when his mother died when he was four and his daddy died when he was seven but he was such a good man and he lived in Baytown Texas and he worked for Humble refinery there for 37 years and he just devoted his life to mother and to me I was their little princess but I had polio at the age of a year and a half and that kind of threw a curve to things because we were in and out of doctors offices and trying to find out how we could help me to walk better and all I wore a brace till I was in the fourth grade God saw me through all this and then I had all these wonderful children I always wanted to be a nurse I said I want to go to nursing school I want to become a registered nurse I want to have four or five children we get married first very area preacher and have four or five children and you know that's exactly what happened to me I went to nursery school became a registered nurse Mayor John Osteen had all these children so I've had a wonderful life my mother daddy loved my family they loved John and they were good parents you know I love if you could share maybe with us the story how you and John became an item well he had gone through a divorce a very heartbreaking divorce didn't know whether he would ever pasture again one of the best preachers I have ever heard in my life and I got a gave my heart to Jesus mother daddy got saved when I was five but I gave my heart to Jesus when I was 13 and I went to the church that he was not he wasn't there at that particular time but as I got older he was the pastor of that church and so I just thought he was the greatest preacher and then I heard that he had gone through a divorce and I was in his in nursing school I didn't know much about it but after awhile I would go home on the weekends I'd take a bus and go home and spend the weekend with mother daddy and I'd go to church and he said one day he was out in front that's when they had time to greet people pastors could greet people I doubt that we could greet what thousands of people every day at the door Joel does but that I don't but anyway he greets just a small amount but he was standing outside and he said Cindy he said God spoke to him and and at that time I didn't even know what he meant for God to speak to you and he said God said someday you're gonna marry that young lady and so he began to come into the hospital and to see other patients at all and then he would come by and see me when I was writing and doing charter you know and I thought man the more he came by and I thought man he must have a lot of sick people in this hospital he comes within one day in 1954 and I'm Valentine's Day he brought me a beautiful beautiful necklace and earrings and he really didn't have all that much money because they had a son and he was paying child support he didn't back there and money was not like it is now but anyway that touched me so much I still have the earrings and in my drawer and April tries to get everything telling you where they are at that point with the necklace earrings and you knew he was interested so when did y'all go on a date yeah yeah he asked me out to dinner and just things like that and I kept calling him brother Osteen that could be weird but anyway when one night we were he came to see me and he said would you please quit calling me pastor and call me John I remember the first time he ever kissed me was right by the city all our nurses dorm was right by the City Hall and he said I see could see the big clock and by the library in Houston and I could see the clock in the library that first time he ever kissed me just a gentle sweet heart and darling and a loving husband so yeah changed is that bringing was different yeah yes tell us a little bit about his daddy was a farmer and he lost everything during the Depression his daddy wasn't saved they didn't know Jesus too well or or love him or anything but the interesting thing about it all of them came to know Jesus but the most wonderful thing is little daddy never would listen to him and John was preaching a meeting around here at down in Dallas at brother Noah's Church and he said he was in the middle of a sermon and here this little man at five foot six men came down the aisle and he said came up on the platform while he was preaching it was his daddy he said I want to start something finish something I started years ago when he was out hunting and it snowed and he got snowed in and he said God if you will save my life he thought I was gonna die I will accept you as my savior but he never did Jesus saved him he got well he had no effects from that but he never did give his heart to Jesus John kept praying for him he said just roll me over in a ditch there's not a heaven or hell but when he came upon that platform he said I'm finishing something I started thirty years ago my name is hard - Jesus he only had one suit and they made him an usher at his church and they found all these tracks in his pocket that he would give out everywhere so here it became a great witness for Jesus and he's in heaven now all the family we're gonna see him again well you know you tell so many of these stories in the book if my heart could talk one of the stories you tell is going through the cancer scare April do you remember you were you were the only job that was at home at that tell me what you remember about that I just mama being healthy never been sick and then she went to the hot side the doctor to get checked out and she didn't come back for a few weeks I believe and they told us that she had cancer and my dad had personally told me at the house he said momma's has cancer and he looked at me and said but she's gonna live we're gonna get a miracle so I never kind of doubted that it was liver cancer and when she came home she didn't look like the same mom she was very yellow very she looked like she was a hundred years old and and just very very very much like what I would explain death looks like what did you think I thought it did you believe what your dad said or I did believe what my dad said but when I saw her I thought is that my mom and then she smiled and I I saw it was my mom Wow and then I saw her fight I'm not supposed to cry you can cry we are I I get in the fight of her life and I saw that which she said she believed on the platform she really believed at home and that's so impacted me and I saw her love God during the good times and I saw her love God during the bad times mm-hmm that's hard thank God during the good times and I saw her thank him during the bad times not for the cancer but that he was gonna heal her of the years yeah the day after she got home you woke up that morning to the smell of breakfast to the smell of breakfast what happened she always made me breakfast she always made me lunch and for school and etcher stuff you know I said earlier I thought it was a miracle my dad got up and made breakfast I've never seen him in the kitchen honey and I came into a full breakfast on the table I came into a lunch sack ready for school and I looked came around the corner and there was my mom why shouldnt dishes looking out the window and i immediately said mama what are you doing you need to be in bed you're sick and she turned around still so very sick and she said i'm not gonna lay in bed like a sick person i believe i'm healed and i'm gonna act like a healed person and i always say at that moment she became a hero that moment she taught me how to fight she taught me how to be a warrior she taught me that when the going gets tough you get tough yourself and either you either are believing believer or you're not and not to say that people who are sick don't believe but i saw her fight the good fight of faith you another thing you told me is what she did when your dad I guess prayed for her what was that she took her Bible and I I didn't know if you knew I was watching that but mama has a little bitty feet and she put her Bible physically on the floor and got up with her little weak body and stood on it and her voice was so weak at the time but when she stood on the Bible her voice became strong and she said God the only thing between me and death is your word and I'm choosing to stand on your word mmm I remember it like it was this morning Wow did you realize that she was watching during all I didn't know she was there mm-hmm I didn't know she thought about that I thought about me fixing breakfast either it was a true miracle John made the statement when my my son Paul was listening one time he's a doctor's Hill and and Paul said daddy please don't ever say that again and this isn't anything against doctors I'm a nurse I love medicine he said daddy we can't heal he said I do surgery I cut people open I take things out but I can't make that skin heal back so doctors can do so much but it's ultimately Jesus that doesn't you that's amazing my goodness so you made it through the cancer and it became a miraculous testimony that you would share over and over I want to say I never get tired of hearing that story and as a result of that you now have healing services I do did you ever dream when you were going through this that God would use you that way no I didn't in fact I was just fighting to live but I'm telling you it's such a joy now to pray something like once a month I go to been top which is the county hospital there and he said and pray for the oncology patients I don't think they let very many people do that but and then I have a service at Hermann Hospital chaplains there center go to Ronald McDonald and see all the little children with their heads shaved and all but I'm telling you and then also a special-needs one which is my favorite spanish service healing in spanish that i have a translator but my favorite one my favorites beside the the children that need healing is a drive-through where they drive up soap and i get in the car with them because they're thirsty to come into the church I love it I love anything when I was at April's chick night one night I pray for not one day I pray for 937 people and she said mama why don't you just pray a mass prayer they're coming I said no April I have to talk to everyone and find out what I need to pray for two and a half hours I prayed and when I got through I was gonna drive back to Houston and I decided I should take over Dayton let's drive back later well you know when you experience what you did you want us so much help others that's a dream express the truth Cindy and I just want to let Jesus know I'm thankful every day is such a precious day and you still stand on those screens you know you I still in every case now standing on a Bible if I have something but every day it's my medication I love that well you don't want to go anywhere we're back with more incredible stories from doneƶ staying in just a moment [Music] well despite their own trials the Osteen family clung steadfast to their faith and because of their commitment to God's Word and the holy spirit Lakewood Church was growing by leaps and bounds little did anyone know a major transition was about to take place we were started in Christian television 30 years ago but never actually had the opportunity to meet John Osteen but he actually did a promo for us one time encouraging us but we loved his ministry on Christian television because he was such and encourage or anything he did television with such excellence and here the church had started in a feed store and then you guys had grown to this mega church and then he got sick he he had hypertension and was on dialysis toward the end but I'm telling you he never quit preach and he preached as long as he could remember April and we never knew when who would be there but he would come out and the people would cheer because we didn't know whether he'd be able to preach and the people cheered when their pester walked out but he was a good man and he fought he thought he said I'm gonna live into the 90s he lived in 1999 some people thought it meant him he died early why didn't he live if he said he was gonna live into the 90s we don't know you know God's ways are better than our ways but anyway John was such a good man and we never thought at least I asked him three or four years before his death daddy what's gonna happen do you have anything planned about anybody taking her he said Lisa you will know exactly what to do but nothing's gonna happen to me so we just assumed he would live forever yeah and then it all changed and but he went through a lot of things and I asked him the night that he went to heaven I was laying on the bed looking at him like this and he was having a little bit of difficulty breathing and I said sweetheart you're not gonna leave me he said never and so he never and so he had a little bit of tightness in his chest so he said and it was late and he had been in the hospitals in and out and I was so tired and he said I'm gonna go on the den and sit well that's when he went to heaven when he was in there I was in bed but anyway he just was wonderful and but we never thought that he would leave and we didn't know who to plan for I just there was something interesting a story that happened he had asked I mean all the kids Minister but he had asked Joel to to speak before yes and Joel had always said that not a play and he was like he's looking at you know keep you looking good he'd make that platform look great I told Joel years later you didn't know you were preparing the platform for yourself he had the pocus and cut down a new and made to fit his daddy sighs yeah and Wow looking on television but he asked him to preach I guess not long before he tell us that story well Lisa had planned dinner for John and me and we went over there and he said I'm gonna ask Joel to preach next Sunday just give me a little rest and I said huh so we both lasted daddy are you dreaming you know Joel was upstairs doing editing and all and so he called him he said daddy you know I'm not a preacher he said but you know I'll make you look good but you just go ahead and preach thank you for asking and Joel hung up the phone and he said the Holy Spirit and him said you're to preach you just call your daddy back and he called back and able to remember this and said daddy I believe I will preach for at least and I nearly fell over because we were just shocked and so he got up there and he was shaken but the people loved me and they loved John and so they clapped for him everything he said was funny and he said what do they all do staring at me but he praised and they loved it and now it was connect it was John listening he was in the hospital he was in the hospital yes do they hook up something work yes dear yes and then we didn't have technical things yeah so they hooked up the telephone and and so Joel and Victoria went up there immediately afterwards and Lisa too and he's the nurses said Joey I've never seen your dad he's so happy and so well and so Joel just realized he had the ability he didn't want to do it I mean he never wanted to preach and so I had told the people we're gonna wait one year so he won't make a mistake I don't want to get somebody that's not supposed to be there and I was bull so how soon did pastor Osteen pass two or three weeks later he was really called and he said mother do you have anybody priest next Sunday I said no I don't brother schambach came every Sunday night for about six weeks and helped us out no I don't have anybody he said I think I want to and I said oh dear not it and so then it went along after that and he called he talked to Lisa and at least I had seen him sitting had been sitting by there and saw him up there and she said someday I'll be praying for him like I do for daddy and so and Victoria said someday you're gonna be preaching that church he said don't tell me that that made him aggravated yeah but anyway he called said mother I believe God's led me to pastor the church and I said oh dear Jesus are you sure because I had no idea he could do it he said I'm sure mother so word got out and and his brother Paul who's a doctor came back God spoke to him on the way from the memorials home going home from the moral service said I want you to come back and help with the church he gave up his big practice chief of staff in Little Rock and came back and he told me I said Sonny you missed surgery he said mother every day of my life but he said mother Jill used to be my little brother but now he's my pastor my calling pastor I think touched me so much I've never gotten it but I'm now calling pastor what do you think about all this is you're sitting here I didn't know all of that it is so interesting yeah God's hand in all of it yeah it's really cool really does what are you thinking as you're contemplating over there it's good to hear all the memories and I remember when they mama didn't say after Joel spoke that first time when daddy asked her ask him to he didn't plan on doing it again it's like check that one off the list I'm done yeah that's the bucket so he came back to that I just I listening to it I realized what a miracle it all is yeah sometimes you'd forget and it's good to remember that was your brother I mean you're close like oh yeah I swear baseball coach yeah he did in this and one day this is funny do we have time for me to tell ya tell it she stopped the game she was one of the best pitchers I'm telling to the coaches all wanted her one coach said I'll get rid of my daughter if I love April but she stopped the game and it was right at the end you know it was a great game and she said she's something under my shirt and so she pulls my shirt and whatever daddy's socks do you remember that I remember thanks for sharing it with [Laughter] about in the book I think it's important for those of you that are listening today is that God sees you differently than the rest of the world yeah that's right yeah I think one other thing all of us can say here at this table is that we feel really the least qualified in the least likely to do what we do at the end of that is that I talked about this yesterday at across for the nation's when we surrender totally to God when we give him our life and we say not my will but your will be done in my life it's like we connect to the divine source that created us that allows us to use the gifting and talents that he's given us but at the end of all that Doty he gets all the glory he does he gets the glory because we realize didn't have our self we are nothing nothing yes you're nothing without him and think about all the people that have wanted to do something for Jesus and failed but they kept on trying and became great successes yeah you just keep on trying Joanie no matter time how many times you fail I failed so many times but I keep on trying we are such an inspiration that's one of the things that I think it's important for those of you that are listening today is you know people will let you down not at such rate and but but God will never how they never let you Jesus said I'll go with you to the end of the world I love this scripture when I was in my 20s I was going through a difficult situation and I remember that scripture where Jesus says come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest I want to tell you today no matter what you're going through that's the truth he will give you peace he will give you rest he'll give you joy and how important we don't have much time but April how important is that your mom talks about this is to not lose your joy yes to not become bitter right and to forgive so important it's if if the devil can steal your joy he steals your strength yes right just got to keep keep on keeping on yeah laughter does good like admit it does and we do a lot of that and sweetie that's right and words make your word sweet you never know how many you have to feel good that's right that's good make your word sweet because you never know how many you'll have to eat I
