hello fore this is the speaking test for the international English language testing system conducted on the 30th of August 2023 at British Council taipe TW w010 my name is Adam molster examiner number 9376969595 ification please thank you you now in this first part I'd like to ask you some questions about yourself um let's talk about what you do what do you work or are you a student um I'm a YouTuber and I've been a YouTuber since 2016 so a full-time YouTuber for about eight years now and why did you choose this work uh it's it's passion I I really liked making videos back in college so I kind of just carried that interest over and I would say I have the dream job right now because I'm making my living based off of what I like to do okay and do you enjoy your work yes I would say I enjoy very much um there there's some downsides to this work but overall I'm very satisfied why do you enjoy it uh because I can reach out to my audience in a meaningful way and I make connection with them and sometimes I feel like the content that I make is very positive to to to them okay what's the hardest part of your job the hardest part of my job would be I think creativity is the toughest part because we need to push out videos in a certain frequency so for me it's on a weekly basis so if you are dry and you're out of ideas it's going to be tough yeah do you think you'll do this work in the future yes I believe so yeah because I like doing doing uh I like making videos so if there's a demand for my video If there's um audience still waiting for my videos I'm going to keep making videos okay let's move on to talk about shopping okay um how much time do you spend shopping every week not a lot I I I don't wait let me try to remember okay so last time I shop was for a book I bought a book online and that was three days ago so why um I I attended a book club so I needed that book I I needed to finish that book before I attend the the Gathering so I bought the book do you enjoy going shopping I think I I I look at shopping more as an more as a necessity so I only shop for things that I need so I I wouldn't say I enjoy shopping what's your favorite shop my favorite shop as in like can a restaurant be a favorite shop um really a shop a sh um my favorite shop uh maybe like a comic store I'm really into Comics so yeah I like the vibe of a comic store right what problems are there with shopping in the city you live um the city I live in the shopping I I can't really pinpoint a problem because I don't usually go out for shopping I I shop online most of the time but if it's the area that I live in there's not a lot of stores nearby so I will have to travel more into the center of the city to get more more Stores um that's really close together all right let's move on to talk about reading okay um do you enjoy reading yes I do enjoy reading why um I think reading it's so for me as a Creator I need a lot of input because my job is to gather information and create create output So reading is a form of input for me and it's very efficient for me to you know gather all the information and you know get what I need from the book what sort of things do you read um a lot of different things so I recently came back from England so uh one of the things that I bought was a book about the history of London and I spent the entire time on the plane reading about history the history of England and that was very interesting to me fascinating to me okay so tell me something about your favorite book my favorite book it's going to sound cliche but my favorite book is Harry Potter uh that's a book that I that I read in high school the especially the last book The Deathly Hallows I think I've read that book over three times why is it your favorite it's it's the conclusion right it's the finale of this very important series so by then uh the movie is not even out yet so I feel like I'm I'm onto something big and I just really enjoy how the the story unfolded and how the characters come together yeah now I'm going to give you a topic and I'd like you to talk about it for one to two minutes before you talk you'll have one minute to make some notes um here's your question um well here's a piece of paper and a pencil and here's your question um I'd like you to describe a song or a piece of music you like okay all right now remember you have one to two minutes for this so don't worry if I stop you okay can you start speaking now please okay um the song that I would like to talk about is Superman can fly by jch uh I in my in my opinion jch is the greatest mandal pop artist of the 21st century and I've I've been a fan of him since you know when I was really young and uh this song is about the life of a public figure so he is describing the difficulties that he might face and all the different choices and maybe some of the the values that's put on to him by the society so it is kind of like an old biography of sorts and uh I first heard this song I would say 10 years ago it's from one of his earlier albums and the reason I picked this song out of you know like a hundred songs that that he's put out is because I've recently uh I recently came across this song again and I listened to it and I felt like I had a deeper understanding of the song and the lyrics because um I'm a different person compared to 10 years ago and I I think that the things that I've been through I've experienced and maybe the heights that I've attained it made me resonate with that song on a deeper level so yeah I would recommend this song to to someone who would like to learn more about what it's like being a public figure thank you um are all of his songs good in my opinion yes I would say so yeah can I have the paper and pencil back and the question as well please thank you okay so um we've been talking about a song or a piece of music you like and I'd like to ask you one or two more general questions connected to this let's talk about let's talk first of all about music and young people okay so what kinds of music are popular with young people in your culture in my culture I would say right now not necessarily song of our native language but more songs maybe in Korean or in Japanese or in English and we like shorter songs so songs are getting shorter and shorter I don't know if it's for Tik Tok you know everyone just remembers that um the the the core part of the song but I would say shorter songs are more popular now uh amongst younger people so why do you think that young people in your culture like um song with a different language than their own H I believe that comes from the entertainment that they enjoy so a lot of them likes anime so from anime comes Japanese songs some of them may like um k k Drama Korean drama and all those theme songs um gets you know embedded into the their heads when they're enjoying the drama so I think it has a lot to do with what kind of and entertainment they enjoy okay so so entertainment is an influence on on the kind of music they like are there any other things that might influence a Young Person's taste in music I would also say short firm videos like those on Tik Tok or dance challenges for example uh one song that's called queen Queen card that's from a Korean group because a lot of different influences covered that song and it became like oh it brainwashed people so younger the younger generation they're more susceptible to these kinds of video formats and in turn they like a certain piece of music and why is it that younger people are more susceptible um I I would because they spend a lot of time I think on Tik Tok on short form videos it's the majority of their time so they they get influenced by that oh okay all right so um oh that leads me on to talking about the next thing I wanted to ask is how has technology affected the kinds of music that young people uh enjoy nowadays technology like Tik Tok or video streaming I think it it widened the the reach of music and it kind of shaped the the music of Our Generation so technology is always pushing things to the limits to the extreme so I feel like music is no exception so young the younger generation um the music that they like the music taste that they develop is very much um corresponding to what type of app or technology that they're using so how important is it for a culture to have musical Traditions yeah yeah I I think music is embedded in uh human history and culture we used to have religious rights or we we have um social Gatherings that's based on music and and they there're two components to music right there there's The Melody of the music and they're they're the lyrics so the melody kind resonates with every one of us and the lyric gives a deeper understanding of what the song is trying to convey so I think that that connection and that history uh make made in uh made music really important um for the Human Society so why do you think that countries have national anthem um a sense of um I think it's it's for people to feel patriotic and to have a sense of belonging to a certain country and do you think that's important nowadays or not I can't really remember the last time I sang my national anthem but uh when I studied in Singapore back in primary school every single morning we had to um put our hand to our chest and sing the national anthem and I believe it's a very good example because Singapore is a nation of multiple cultures and ethnicities and by that one national anthem especially the lyrics is talking about all the different cultures coming together as one as a nation so in that setting I believe it is important because it's it's more of a mosaic and you're putting different people from different cultures into one place where we have to unite and fight for better future so in the context of Singapore I I do believe that having that right uh of the national anthem is good for the people okay um let's move on to talk about music in the future um do you think that music will remain important in the future I do believe that music is still going to be very important in the future um because we can learn a a lot uh from the past and judging from the course of history I would predict music to become even more important in the future because there are a lot of different ways to express yourselves and there are more um jobs that's related to creativity uh right now so um being like a medium for Content I believe that songs will continue to become more prevalent and more widespread and consumed by the people of the 21st century and beyond thank you very much that is the end of the speaking test thank you thank you Adam all right thank you thanks this is my second time with the interview I think I'm a little bit more experienced now the last time I had the official test I got a band score of eight yeah and I have to say it's much higher than I expected cuz I felt like I made a lot of mistakes during the interview and um so I I thought back to what Andrew told me how you guys rate a person speaking is you try to get them to talk as much as possible and then place them at their highest level yeah yeah yeah sure so is that what's happening I think examiner's job is to try and get you to say as much as you possibly can and to try and help you to say it say it as best as you can so that you can get the highest band score for your English level so definitely that's what we're trying to do yeah so based on how I just did what what range would you think I am in well I can't comment very yeah yeah in detail on your band score because I work for the British Council and uh we part own the test so I'm not allowed to give out band scores right C of Interest um but yeah you're definitely in the upper range of the band scores I think that's probably that's obvious to anybody listening to your test how can I improve so that I can be a band nine like the perfect score what would be a perfect score for you I think it's important to put it into context put band n into context because very few people actually need band n band 9's really really difficult to get right so as we were doing the test you made it quite easy for me because your English was very natural and there was um some very interesting points and uh also you had some really good vocabulary so I was trying to listen out for errors and there were one or two but they were minor right it's about ironing out those minor mistakes now for the majority of people who take the test I don't think that they're necessarily in your situation and there are maybe more major mistakes that they more important mistakes that they might might need to work on the test allows for you know some some mistakes that just happen because in the speaking test we are building our message in real time and so that's a difficult thing to do whichever language we're speaking how about joking is it okay to joke in the interview process um again I think that kind of depends sometimes there there will be laughter in a test you know it's two human beings and they're talking to each other and sometimes something will be said and there'll be laughter I don't think you should necessarily deliberately try to be funny but if something happens and it is funny then I don't think that's a problem even I'm also curious about profanity is that at all like allowed in the interview my advice would be to avoid it because in this particular situation it's not really appropriate for this situation right however there's degrees of profanity aren't there right so there are certain things that we might say that are really quite mild and probably don't really matter very much but in my my point of view I think you should try and avoid that kind of language final question what do you think is the best way to prepare yourself before an iot interview the first thing you might want to do is familiarize yourself with the public band descriptors do you know what they are yes I do okay so I mean I have a copy of them for the speaking and the writing here MH um so the advantage with the speaking band descriptors is that it breaks down what the examiner is looking for in order to award you each band at um fluency and coherence uh pronunciation lexical resource grammatical range and accuracy right it's good to be aware of those things so that when you're practicing and that's another thing you should certainly do is try and practice with somebody then you're going to be able to um try and push yourself a little bit further what I would also do is I would definitely record yourself speaking and listen back to it you want to know what you sound like and you want to know what mistakes you're making now the thing is is when we're speaking in real time we can't take notice of what we're saying as well as say it yeah you know that's just kind of Beyond most humans ability so if you make a recording then you can start to identify mistakes that you're making but also you might find from your recording I'm better at that than I thought I was you know I'm actually a bit more fluent than I thought I was so maybe I'll slow down a bit maybe I won't worry so much about that and that will allow me to focus on some other things by watching this video I think you can prepare yourself on what the format is what to expect what to expect cuz for the first part it's actually better for you to have short responses right because quick fire questions it's just for you to get familiar with the questions and as you go into the second and third part it's more about complete ideas and you know the rhetorics of you know a certain topic so I would say that if you watch this video you get to understand the format of the interview understand that the Examiner is not here to deduct points they're here to put you at your level at your highest possible level so it's actually okay to make mistakes so do not be afraid to stumble or to stut for example like we we just gave you an the raw version of what I just did as as a examinee I think the mindset for you coming in is to just be more relaxed use your grammatical and lexical resources to make a natural conversation on the day of the test you going to feel some stress that that's inescapable but the more that you can know about what's going to happen in the test then the less stress you're going to feel I think that's true for any test whether you're doing a driving test you know if you know what's going to happen and when it's going to happen and you've rehearse that then you can take things more in your stride and you can focus more on what you want to say [Music] MH [Music] byebye [Music]
