Who is Hanni? The real Hanni? The Hanni... we don't-- I can't even keep this up. Hanni is jokester, a prankster [*strange animal noises*] [What is this?] And one of the most beautifully sentimental and deep idols I've ever seen. I mean... really. Listen. [ ♪ Dodie - Sick of Losing Soulmates ♪ ] Now you might be like;
"Ben, how is that possible?" "How can someone be such a goofball, but at the same time have the power to make even the most cliche villain cry at the emotional power of her voice? cliche villain cry at the emotional power of her voice? [Sound of villain tears] Personally, I think that's what makes Hanni one of the powerhouses of the fourth
generation. She's relatable to so many people, but has a truly profound and talented artistic side. To get to where she is, she's had to leave her family behind in Australia, learn Korean,
and debut in a group so immensely popular, she went from a trainee to number one on the charts in a matter of days. Talk about whiplash. Her mindset, her psychology through it all,
is hard to understand without-- that's right, going back to the very beginning. Hanni Pham was born on October 6th, 2004, in Melbourne, Australia, and was fated to have a career in music. In an interview with billboard, she said, "My mom taught me and my sister to sing when we were younger." "She would bring us into the bathroom—because of the good echo!— and then she’d play a song for me to sing and would try to teach me to sing like the artist." "I remember the first song she ever taught us was “All at Once” by Whitney Houston, an absolute gem of a song, her voice and the song just radiate together." And Mama Pham encouraged Hanni to pursue music every step of the way. Is it a surprise one of the few images we have of predebut Hanni is from a One Direction concert? I don't
think so. While she learned ukulele in school, her mom had her take piano lessons, which... Which just led to her learning the guitar. I didn't even mention the dance lessons, or taekwondo, or hockey-- did this girl ever rest? Well, a lot of it boiled down to Hanni's
ambition. You see, her family's guidance wasn't just limited to music. They gave her the
quote-on-quote "best advice she's ever received." And competing with herself has no doubt helped her develop her skills to this day, cuz we all know how her competitiveness gets when unchecked. [LISTEN TO MY DINOSAUR--] [DINOSAUR X2] [TALK!!!] Oh, as to why she's such a joker? So the Pham fam is kind of a big deal. Alright, back to Hanni History. Hanni took a stab at starting her career when she auditioned for The Voice Kids Australia-- but she didn't have a breakthrough until-- Yeah, she heard about that audition through this
trailer by the way. You might... you might recognize someone... just uh... just a thought. And she auditioned for HYBE singing the song
'Would You Be So Kind' by Dodie Clark while playing ukulele. Spoilers-- she got in. Okay, but before we can understand her transition to Korea, we need to talk about her family again.
Cuz, without their support, the move wouldn't have been possible. Her mom loved IU's songs so much, Hanni practiced 'Through the Night' on guitar and performed it for her. And then years later, she got to tell IU how much her songs meant to her and her mom. Like, how perfect is that! And in the recent Australia Vlog Hanni recorded, where she went back home, her mother bought her flowers, concert tickets (like old times 😉) was caught watching NewJeans content-- [Sorry, it's NewJeans time!] and well, this. In an interview with VOGUE Australia, Hanni says, “I miss being able to see my family whenever
I want to. What I miss the most are family meals and regular visits with all of my grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, which I can only do once in a while now." "Home to me is definitely where my heart lies and that’s wherever my family is." And it's true. No matter where she goes, she expresses gratitude and love for her family. She'll buy souvenirs for them on overseas trips, even when she's returning to Korea and not Australia. So the takeaway is, if you're wondering how Hanni is able to be so playful but understand the place for deep love and affection, look no further. I mean.... it's THIS. [Hanni's sister imitating the iconic blonde
hair line] [LOL] Oh yeah, where was I? Oh, South Korea! It wasn't an easy jump, but Hanni
brought an optimistic mindset. “To leave everyone and everything behind and move to a place where I didn’t speak the language was definitely a massive step for me, but I think I approached it more with a very excited mindset." And excited she was! She met that girl she thought was pretty in the teasers, took some Korean lessons along with self study, and made the lineup for NewJeans, albeit, with a lot of worry along the way as we learn
from the special one-year anniversary interview. And... she debuted. [ ♪ NewJeans - Attention ♪ ] "It’s so surreal. Yeah, it really is." "I think especially it's like, oh, it's so crazy to see so many people listen to our songs, let alone dance to it and enjoy it and
post about it." "And it's so cool to see that it's been able to reach an international level, which we never expected." "We are still so grateful and still shocked all the time and everything, but it's been so much fun." And fun is key. The very fact that being an idol
is fun, is what makes it all come natural to Hanni, who is a fan of so many groups herself. And the joy of living with her members as idols comes through in their work. Her lifestyle is integrated with her identity as an artist. "I think we always try to focus on how we can be professional and how we can perform more enjoyable stages for everyone, and doing
this is just a part of who we are." "There is no line at all. We are silly as we are on and off camera anyways." [Laughs] "It’s just lots of fun." But there's one last ingredient, I would like to argue, as to why Hanni is able to captivate and move us, the way she does-- she understands and values artistry. What I mean by that, is she understands exactly what she looks for in music and art and uses that experience to improve her
own style as a musician. For example: Hanni above all, wants to be healed by her favorite artists. She wants to be refreshed by them. And that's something that extends to her
own work. And that's exactly why Hanni, this goofball, this jokester, is able to make people cry like they're doing the backstroke in a pot of chopped onions. She deliberately tries to give her voice the power to heal. She wants bunnies, and all the people around
her, to feel the peace she does listening to her favorite songs. And if she can do that... that's enough for her. Wha- what? Oh, sorry! Yeah, I'm recording a video. Kinda spaced out there. If you enjoyed, leave a like and subscribe for more in the future! I'm gonna start making polls where you guys
can vote for which idol I deep dive next, so get excited for those! Alright, see you guys later! Annyeong!
