hello my friends i get asked to perform the sky boat song otherwise known as the theme from outlander every single day on tiktok even though i've done it twice i still get the request so i knew i wanted to do a full cover track of it however there are so many covers of this song already and because of the renewed and growing excitement around folk music um there's gonna be a lot more and so as an artist i thought okay if i'm gonna cover this i wanna do it in a way that only i could do it so i'm going to walk you through the process of how i made that happen which was by actually sampling the song and writing my own lyrics i will play the lyric video and the track for you at the end a special thanks by the way to nordvpn for sponsoring this video if you are looking for the best on the sky boat song because you couldn't watch a melinda video without me explaining some stuff the tune is one that you'll hear a lot in scottish music and it's actually bled into other celtic traditions as well we do not know by whom or when that tune was written but it was what we call collected by ann campbell mcloyd and the first set of well-known lyrics was written by sir harold bolton in the 1870s [Music] carry the light that's born to be king over the sea to the sky and then the other set of lyrics commonly associated with this tune were written by robert louis stevenson in around 1885 and robert louis stevenson wrote them because he didn't like the other lyrics truly he just didn't like them so he wrote some new ones because folk music there's also a hymn like a religious adaptation to the tune there's so many variations here's the thing about folk music it's not static and that's why i love it obviously these tunes have some known history that it is very important for us to pass down but these songs are well over 100 years old and they've been passed down primarily orally you'll never hear two people within any celtic tradition sing a song the same way so if you are actively trying to make historically accurate folk music yeah i mean go for it that is that is a very specific set of goals to have but in my experience the reason the tradition has lived on is because it means something totally different to each individual and therefore it flows it changes it evolves folk music is about your relationship to the music whether or not you even have like dna ties to it and that's just ah that's why i love it and why i'm so excited to like bring myself to this song and therefore share it with you and be a part of how you relate to this music now i love the idea of carrying that on so that's why i'm doing what i'm doing just trying to justify myself to the internet trolls that are definitely gonna get mad at me for doing this i'm just pulling a robert louis stevenson and writing some lyrics that feel a little bit more personal to me so basically what i did was i took the chorus that everybody knows and loves and then one of uh robert lewis stevenson's verses that i really liked and thought was really evocative and gorgeous and used that as the bridge and then i wrote my own melodies and lyrics to verses when i heard stevenson's lyrics i really loved the notion of all that was good all that was fair all that was me is gone there was a sense of mourning a part of yourself that had died or that had become lost which i just thought was so beautiful and so human i got an image of me walking on the shores of a beach and you know processing and crying about whatever this this loss of of myself feels like but ultimately that it's a beautiful thing and looking back and seeing that my footprints were being washed away by the waves as i continued forward i don't know that image was just powerful for me and i wanted to integrate that into the song so i hope you enjoy the sky boat song reimagined sing me [Music] [Music] she sailed on a day over the sea to the sky footprints [Music] step by step i go they lead and hold my heart [Music] is [Music] a wave breaks the sand and passed [Music] she was washed away is [Music] sailed on a day to the sky [Music] all that was good all that was fair left in its [Music] [Music] i [Music]
