These are really nice breakdowns, great content! It was a lot of fun to relive some of those, too. Except UConn v Butler

2003 was awesome even though we didn't win. Damn FTs.

Twas my freshman year at KU and I knew nothing about CBB... what a fun season to get introduced to the game living right next door to Allen Fieldhouse.

i watched every single ncaa national championship game from 2000 all the way up to baylor's win from this year it took me well over a month but i condensed every game into a breakdown for this video you'll see how the game has changed stylistically and i'm not just talking about hd video quality you'll also see a couple teams that were way ahead of their times during the early 2000s and of course some of the most exciting finishes in march madness history settle in grab some popcorn hit the like and subscribe buttons and let's watch some basketball [Music] tom izzo's only national championship so far in his career came in 2000 against florida and it was right in the middle of a three-year period where the spartans made three consecutive final fours florida started the game in billy donovan's signature press the gators picked up full court for the whole game but mateen cleves was able to handle the pressure for michigan state at halftime izzo was happy with this team's performance against the pressures yeah i think we've attacked the press pretty well we've made some good passes some good plays they got one or two steals but the trade off right now i think it's been in our favor remember the shot clock was still at 35 seconds in 2000. so michigan state had plenty of time to back it out and run a set after beating the press this was my favorite set play from them a ball screen wedge where the wedge screener then received a stagger not much change for tom izzo from then to now a lot of the sets from 2000 are still being used by michigan state today like their elbow rub action that then turns into another stagger screen it's a play that many spartans teams have had success with in the past and if you remember this huge three that knocked off zion and duke in the elite eight aj granger hit that same shot in the second half against florida [Music] granger was the game's x factor stretching the floor with three-point shooting and attacking closeouts when drawing udonis haslam away from the basket these two sequences in the second half really summed up the game twice michigan state had bad turnovers against the press leading to easy baskets for florida but instead of cracking under the pressure msu came right back immediately with easy layups of their own never letting florida make a run at the lead [Music] even with mateen cleaves sustaining an injury going back into the locker room and then limping out onto the court willis reed style michigan state held the lead mo peterson sealed the deal with a couple big threes and the spartans were national champs duke was loaded with talent and arguably the two best players in the country shane battier won national player of the year in 2001 then jay williams won it the following season the blue devils were also way ahead of their time in terms of style of play they broke the record for most three-pointers in a season no other team in the country was even within a hundred of them overall 42 percent of their shots were from behind the arc a coach k team hasn't finished over 40 since then and just to give you a feel for how abnormal that was the celtics led the nba in three-point rate in 2001 at just 25 arizona started in zone in the championship game forcing duke into contested jump shots early when arizona went to man duke used a lot of ball screens another thing that wasn't common for most teams in 2001 duke was ahead of their time jay williams was their main ball screen guard but duhan and dunleavy played out of them as well [Music] the other main part of duke's offense against arizona was a high low action for carlos boozer the sophomore big man came off the bench but still finished with a double double in 30 minutes of playing time defensively it was exactly what you would expect from duke pressuring the ball denying the wings and preventing arizona from comfortably running their offense williams was an especially aggressive defender getting into some foul trouble as a result but the biggest issue was duke was undersized defensively they started the game with shane battier guarding the 7-footer lauren woods in the post and woods almost single-handedly kept the game close for arizona in the first half in the second half dunlevy was the hero hitting back to back to back threes in less than a minute span to open up a 10-point lead for duke richard jefferson then got hot for arizona to bring it back to a one-possession game down the stretch but the national player of the year battier finished the wildcats off with timely offensive rebound putbacks and an emphatic dunk billy packer summed up the 2002 national championship game pretty well this game is one of the poorest played games i've seen in a final four in a long time particularly when what we expected the game was sloppy for all 40 minutes maryland and indiana both wanted to play through the post but struggled getting the ball inside without first committing a turnover then even if the ball did get inside their shots out of the post were ugly as well regardless of that sloppy play maryland managed to get out to a lead thanks to some transition baskets and offensive rebounds on the other hand indiana started the game one for 14 on two point attempts but then somehow cut the lead down to six at halftime after hitting back to back two pointers the hoosiers run continued into the second half when they took their first lead of the game on this set play for jared jeffries normally on a slice screen jeffries would go to the opposite block with the ball getting reversed to then throw it inside for a post touch but indiana threw the ball back to where it came from instead catching chris wilcox off guard of course when indiana went to run the same play a couple minutes later it resulted in another turnover maryland's flex offense did get going a little bit in the second half especially for lonnie baxter the terps found him off their flex continuity on a few different occasions but from an analysis perspective this was mostly just an ugly game that someone had to win and that someone was maryland and gary williams strange game one of the strangest final four games i've ever seen in 2003 jim beiheim got his championship with an 81-78 win over a roy williams coach kansas team syracuse only had two future nba players on the roster but one of them was a freshman superstar carmelo anthony style of play-wise syracuse was almost exactly what you'd expect mello was their offensive creator using his pivots to play out of the triple threat just like he would in the nba but kansas emphasized getting the ball out of his hands turning him into a passer by sending early help in his direction mello had just eight assists in the first five games of the tourney combined but finished with seven against kansas on the other end of the court of course syracuse was in their 2-3 zone this was their best defensive sequence of the game preventing kansas from getting inside and that syracuse length did give kansas some initial trouble but the jayhawks countered it by crushing the orange on the glass kansas had 24 offensive rebounds against the zone so offense wasn't really the problem for the jayhawks it was the defense jerry mcnamara and pretty much the whole syracuse team was on fire from three making kansas pay when they trapped mella and anthony scored his team's 53rd point of the first half by nailing a three right as one of those traps was occurring kansas got right back into the game almost immediately at the start of the second half on top of that mello was noticeably being bothered by a back injury it felt like it was only a matter of time until the jayhawks took control of the game but that just never happened in large part due to kansas's foul shoot they finished the game shooting 12 for 30 from the line including a 3 for 10 from nick collison even despite those free throw woes kansas made one more run in the final minutes ultimately getting three different three point attempts that would have tied the game heinrich missed the first one hakeem warwick's long arms famously blocked the second one and then with 1.5 seconds war contested the final attempt as syracuse held on for the championship connecticut's front court was loaded with talon in 2004 ameca okafor josh boone charlie villanueva and hilton armstrong all combined to be the reason why the huskies finished the season as the third best offensive rebounding team in the nation the championship game was pretty much a blowout the whole way it wasn't as close as the nine point final margin indicated georgia tech chose to play aggressive from the start you could see head coach paul hewitt urging his team to push the ball in transition and take it right to yukon the problem was the yellow jackets didn't have a counter when that aggression still put them down double digits midway through the first half in addition to that loaded front core yukon also had an extremely polished score at the guard position in ben gordon gordon hit tough shots in the championship transition threes before the defense was set off move in jumpers after receiving screens from his teammates and floaters in the lane when the defense tried to take away his jumpers but the most outstanding player was awarded to a mecha okafor who dominated the inside on both ends of the floor he finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds while also affecting so many georgia attack shot attempts with his rim protection abilities here were my two favorite plays that show just how overwhelming yukon's size and athleticism were on the roll to the basket okafor catches the ball facing away from the hoop but all in one motion he somehow goes straight up into a powerful dunk then on the double team he drew two defenders jared jack is in good position here dropping to protect the hoop but this time it's josh boone just going up for the dunk all in one motion one other x's and o's note this is the first game where i saw a team use zoom action if you're subscribed to the channel and seen my videos in the past you know how popular that action is right now in college basketball in 2021 jim calhoun was way ahead of the curve on that one [Music] north carolina and illinois were the unanimous two best teams in the country headed into the 2005 tournament and the championship game between them didn't disappoint the game was tied with under two minutes left like just about every roy williams team carolina was looking to push the ball in transition they finished seventh in the country in pace in 2005 and got their famous secondary break going against illinois in half court offense it was all shawn may for unc he finished with 26 and 10 while missing just one shot from the field illinois was led by their guard trio of darren williams luther head and d brown the three of them all finished with double figures as a team illinois took 43 point attempts breaking the national championship record i have a full-length 14 minute video already up on the channel breaking down the coaching strategies and ending of this game so you can check that out to see how carolina held off the big illinois comeback and won roy williams his first national championship we'll be seeing him and unc again soon in this video in 2006 florida had an absolutely dominant performance against a talented ucla team it started out on the defensive side of the ball with corey brewer he was given the assignment of chasing aaron aflallo around screens aflalo wenches 3 for 10 from the field and brewer was everywhere on defense sprinting from behind to steal the ball when florida was pressing taking charges blocking shots and winning the 50 50 balls joakim noah was just as good defensively as brewer he set the record for most blocks in an entire championship game in just the first half alone and that rim protection allowed his teammates to gamble this ucla set was supposed to take advantage of the florida hedge by slipping to the basket the play works but noah is at the rim to erase the mistake offensively noah was just as good florida used him in pick and pops with noah catching the ball in the center of the floor to make a play when florida got the ball in the post ucla chose to double team horford and noah and the gators duo picked it apart with big to big passing instead of forcing the issue against the double the two of them found the open man the gators capped off the championship with an impromptu dunk contest at the end of the game ucla was forced to extend their defense and pressure the ball leading to florida dunks on what felt like just about every possession for the last 10 minutes of the game it was just a dominant performance from florida completely owning the paint and earning billy donovan his first national championship donovan didn't have to wait very long for championship number two in 2007 florida returned their entire starting lineup from the year before however the championship game was very different from the previous season ohio state and greg oden more than held their own on the inside unlike ucla the year prior the buckeyes played the post one on one without double teaming and it gave florida trouble it was odin who owned the paint all night long blocking shots and protecting the rim here's that same florida pick and pop but it was a lot harder to convert with odin in the paint odin was a beast when posting up on the offensive end as well making it pretty clear as to why he was the number one pick in the draft as good as noah was in 2006 he was outmatched in 2007 also spending a portion of the game in foul trouble in this championship we got our first instance of a team using spread ball screens ohio state would spread out on the perimeter have odin set a screen for conley and then just roll to the basket that's especially notable because the spread ball screen now dominates the game today we'll be seeing plenty more of it later in the video so how did florida win this game even with odin so dominant inside well first of all corey brewer was still doing his thing defensively getting his hands on loose balls and creating havoc the florida guards brewer taurine green and lee humphrey combined to go 10 for 18 from three multiple times in the second half odin had a big block at the rim only for florida to then get the offensive rebound and kick it out to humphrey for a backbreaker meanwhile ohio state wenches 4 for 23 from behind the r so the 3 point line was really the difference in this one florida even went zone down the stretch just daring osu to make a jumper and when the buckeyes remain cold we got my favorite post game interview in national championship history yeah we gonna do it big all day all night doing huge you guys have no idea what i'm talking about when i'm saying that but but my boys know the game boys know what i'm talking about what i'm talking about the 2008 title game featured two elite defensive teams in kansas and memphis with the game being our first one so far to go into overtime mario chalmers game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation kept kansas a lot the first kansas basket of the game came on a classic bill self concept a stagger screen on the weak side to occupy the help kansas also scored off of their ball screen duck in action five times during the game that's more than the number of threes they hit the jayhawks were just three for twelve from behind the arc and we also got a classic bill self lob play with sharon collins finding sasha khan for the alu on the other hand john calipari and memphis ran dribble drive motion with players passing and cutting to open up driving lanes for derrick rose and chris douglas roberts in response kansas tried crowding the paint sagging off of the memphis role players and daring the three-point shot midway through the second half kansas switched their defense going to a boxing one with mario chalmers chasing around douglas roberts and the rest of the team playing a zone the boxing one was disruptive for a few possessions but then derrick rose who had struggled up to that point started heating up memphis built a lead but the tigers shot just 61 percent from the foul line during that season so with two minutes and 12 seconds left kansas started intentionally fouling early eventually all that fouling set up the famous mario chalmers game tying three-pointer sending it to overtime [Applause] unbelievable dozier and midcourt for the championship in ot kansas went back to their sagging man-to-man defense and stuck to all those offensive sets that had got them there in the first place the jayhawks controlled the overtime period and hit their free throws down the stretch earning bill self his first and only national championship 2009 was a north carolina route the charkios went up by 20 just 10 minutes in and michigan state was never able to get the game within single digits after that unc started the game with four baskets in a row off of ball screens first dion thompson took advantage of michigan state's hedge by popping into the empty corner then with michigan state getting sucked in on the roll ty lawson found danny green for a shake three on possession number three the dribble handoff caught suton off guard allowing wayne ellington to slice to the basket off the screen and finally tyler hansbrough slipped the screen again taking advantage of that hedge from there different carolina stars took turns controlling the offense it started with hansboro in the post hitting tough fadeaways when msu played him straight up and finding his teammates if they double then ellington got hot using off ball screens set by his teammates and rising up over his man for tough three-pointers [Music] and then ty lawson's quickness took over in the second half weaving through the defense for drives to the basket and dump offs to hansborough it was one of the more dominant performances in championship history with roy williams winning his second title in five years gordon hayward and butler's cinderella run to the championship game set up a match-up with one seated duke that would come down to the game's final seconds in duke's motion offense the primary component for creating shots was off-ball screens kyle singler john shire and nolan smith would run off of multiple screens within the same possession reading the defense to curl the hoop or fade for a jumper butler countered that off-ball motion by jumping towards the ball with the defender guarding the passer a technique that's called a stunt brad stevens had a very fundamentally sound defensive team this is my favorite example of stunting i've ever seen with both norad and howard synchronizing their stunt and recovery back to their men duke's counter was the boomerang pass relocating that passer away from the stunt for a three another big part of duke's offense was brian zuback's offensive rebound the senior center led the entire country in offensive rebounding percentage and he had six offensive boards against butler but zubek was also duke's biggest weakness on the defense of it butler forced the big fella to defend ball screens throughout the game exploiting zuback's hedges by attacking him for drives to the basket or passing to the roller meanwhile butler's center matt howard was in foul trouble for some of the game but his backup avery jukes came in and gave zuback even more trouble with the pick and pop jukes finished the game with 10 points including two three-pointers neither team ever led by more than six points but duke did maintain a small lead down the stretch with 13 seconds left in the ball underneath their own hoop butler had a chance to take the lead on this hayward jumper after zuback missed a free throw on purpose hayward had another chance from half court for the championship and of course we all know how close that one was to dropping but duke held on for another title [Music] even with gordon hayward off to the nba butler improbably managed to get back to the national championship in 2011 against kemba walker and yukon the huskies had won 10 games in a row to get there including 5 wins in 5 days during the big east tourney watch these 3 baskets carefully you have now seen every single butler two-point basket during the entire championship game the bulldogs shot just three for 31 from inside the arc overall the two teams combined for just 94 points butler's front court of matt howard and andrew smith were unable to get anything going out of their post-ups the two of them combined to finish just three for 22 from the floor on the other hand kemba got going a little bit early but he struggled shooting the ball as well finishing just 5 for 19. butler soft trapped all of kemba and shabazz napier's ball screens putting two players on the ball and daring a different yukon player to beat them instead yukon made just one three-pointer in the game and that allowed the butler defenders not trapping the ball screen to sink into the paint it was that strong ball screen defense plus this shelvin mack three-pointer that actually gave butler a three-point lead at the very end of an ugly first half yukon started the second half using more off-ball motion with floppy action for jeremy lam and kemba with butler just unable to put the ball in the basket uconn built a double-digit lead brad stevens then chose to switch defenses moving to a zone but it's not like butler's defense had been the problem in the first place they had a stretch in the second half where they missed 20 out of 21 shots on offense without the ability to finish at the rim butler never made a run and kemba and yukon completed their 11 game run to a national championship the 2012 title game featured the number one and number two two-point defenses in the country both kentucky and kansas held their opponents to under 40 on shots inside the arc during that season of course kentucky's defense was anchored by superstar anthony davis davis had one of the best defensive seasons for a freshman ever but kansas had an equally as good shot blocker in jeff whithey it was whiffy who had 31 blocks in the six tournament games which is still the all-time record so clearly open looks were hard to come by for both teams but what made davis so unique was his versatility watch kansas run their ball screen wheel set when davis was on the bench the jayhawks forced terence jones to guard that ball screen and found thomas robinson for the dunk now watch the same play with davis in the game he gives support on the ball handler and then uses his length and athleticism to just take away the roll that's the anthony davis effect here's another example on the kansas overload set robinson gets great position but ad just sinks down and wipes it away the big advantage in the first half for kentucky was transition offense the wildcats got out on the fast break and attacked the rim before the kansas defense could get set up kentucky's leading scorer wasn't anthony davis or michael kid gilchrist or even terence jones a.d actually went 1 for 10 from the floor and still won the most outstanding player which really just shows how good he was defensively the actual leading scorer was duron lamb who hit three big threes and finished with 22 points with a minute left bill self drew up a back door play that caught kid gilchrist sleeping only to then have a ridiculous recovery to block the shot and 30 seconds later it was davis turn lamb got beat on the elevator screen but ads length and athleticism was there to force the travel it was those clutch defensive plays that gave john calipari his first and only national championship louisville's 2013 national championship technically never happened at least according to the ncaa but in reality the game was a battle of great guard play michigan had the national player of the year point guard trey burke louisville had a backcourt combination of peyton siva and russ smith however it was a freshman backup point guard who stole the show in the first half spike albrecht with trey burke in foul trouble spike came in and broke his season high for scoring within minutes showing off his long range shooting ability and crafty drives to the basket meanwhile the louisville offense was running through payton siva the cardinals put him in tons of high ball screens sifa took advantage early on by splitting the defense but his turnovers in the middle part of the first half helped michigan build a double-digit lead even with burke and fouchup that all changed very quickly thanks to luke hancock the junior buried four straight threes in just a two minute span to cut the michigan lead to one then this emphatic dunk from montrez harrell actually gave louisville the lead at half despite spike's surprise performance in the second half trey burke was back in the game showing why he was national player of the year with deep shooting range the game turned into a back and forth ball screen battle between burke and payton siva siva also got two easy baskets off of rick pitino's wheel action where siva comes off of a flare screen while a pin down is being set on the other side of the floor to occupy the defense then michigan started trapping siva's ball screens forcing the screen setter gorgy jang to make plays out of the short roll instead jang hit two big shots to extend louisville's lead and then shane bohannon stepped up for the hustle play of the game he missed the first shot missed the tip back and then somehow kept the ball alive and put it in the hoop louisville maintained that lead and pitino won his first national championship since 1996 even if it did technically come with an asterisk in 2014 yukon made it back to the title game as a seventh seat this time with kevin ollie as head coach and a roster that had less future nba talent than any other championship team since 2000. on the other hand kentucky's entire starting lineup was six foot six or taller which could have potentially created a mismatch for yukon's smaller guards like shabazz napier and ryan boatwright but it was yukon's pressuring quickness that gave the harrison twins trouble speeding them up and forcing turnovers to start the game on the other end of the floor kentucky was switching everything 1-5 and yukon kept it simple by isolating against kentucky bigs napier boatwright and deandre daniels all had iso baskets early on the adjustment for john calipari and the wildcats was zone defense they went to the zone after uconn got up by 13 and quickly cut into that deficit by forcing turnovers and blocking shots at the rim the lead was down to four at half time after this julius randle put back kentucky came back out in man in the second half and yukon went right back to those isolations when kentucky switched back to the zone yukon was prepared this time with this step up ball screen set after the ball reversal daniels set the step up screen putting james young in a position where he has to help on the ball while also being responsible for gephi in the corner it was a strange game for kentucky's offense they had several jaw-dropping dunks and athletic plays that felt like they were going to spark a run but overall they just couldn't get into a rhythm to end the game kevin ollie and yukon chose to go small sliding deandre daniels to the five and zoning that big kentucky lineup the wildcats just couldn't hit enough jumpers to make that zone pay and yukon became the first team to win their third national championship of the 2000s the 2015 season was loaded with elite teams kentucky started 38-0 before losing in the final four to a wisconsin team that was in the final four for the second year in a row meanwhile duke was the only champion to have eight future nba players on their roster that is if you count semi ojolay who did transfer at the end of the first semester the big matchup going into the title game was freshman jaleel okafor against senior frank kaminsky okafor with his dominance on the inside and kaminsky with his ability to stretch the defense out to the perimeter wisconsin's drop coverage when guarding ball screens was designed to take away the roller and turn the duke guards like tyus jones into scorps drones led duke both in field goal attempts and points and we'll see more from him in a second the one time duke was able to pass to the roller was when they went to continuity ball street with jones finding emile jefferson on the second side in half number two both okafor and justice winslow were forced to the bench due to foul trouble and that opened up the door for freshman guard gracing out allen unexpectedly took over the game for a portion of the second half first knocking down a three and then slashing to the basket multiple times against the wisconsin defense when coach k put okafor back in the game he picked up another foul quickly with kaminsky spinning by for the n1 but it was that tyus jones shot making that carried duke down the stretch he took on wisconsin's drop coverage and nailed three big jumpers including two threes that clutch performance gave coach k his fifth national championship when you think of villanova one of the first things that comes to mind is probably the three-point shot and the 2016 team certainly did shoot their fair share of threes but they actually played inside out using post-ops to generate shot attempts on their first play of the championship game they went right into ryan archie diacono in the post who missed a tough left hand shot villanova's next two post-ops resulted in pass outs for easy baskets ochefu found jenkins on the cut and then jenkins found archer diacono for a skip past three when north carolina then focused on trying to avoid those passouts villanova was now able to go one on one in the post archothu and josh hart all had post baskets during the middle of the first half one area where unc was giving villanova trouble was perimeter pressure the taros were denying ball reversals sometimes preventing the wildcats from getting into their normal offensive flow on the other end of the court unc size was an issue for villanova inside bryce johnson had easy baskets at the rim when villanova switched screens in front of the post with their guards that opened up the three-point line for the tar heels who led by five at the half in the second half villanova came out countering that pressure defense with back door cuts here hark got into the paint and found brunson for the threat and of course there were more villanova post-ups the wildcats shot 59 from two for the game which was the highest two-point percentage for a unc opponent all season long the go-to guy down the stretch for villanova was another guard off the bench that's been a recurring theme in these championship games we saw spike albrecht and grace and allen earlier this time it was phil booth knocking down tough shots as the wildcats pulled ahead with 13 seconds left marcus paige hit a ridiculous double clutch 3 to tie the game at 74. but all that clutch shot did was just set up jenkins for the championship jenkins gives it to jenkins for the championship [Applause] north carolina was right back in the championship game in 2017 looking to avenge the previous year's defeat between unc and gonzaga we had two programs known for having a talented roster of back to the basket big man so it's not a surprise that this game was all about post ups the two teams combined for 34 in the title game the most since post-ups began being tracked in 2007. one of the reasons that there were so many post-ops was that both teams had the size to guard each other one-on-one without helping listed at seven foot one three hundred pounds shema karnowski obviously faced a lot of double teams during his time at gonzaga but kennedy meeks did a great job of guarding him one on one for carolina holding karnowski to one for eight shooting and zero assists instead of going at the carolina biggs gonzaga had more success posting up nigel williams goss against smaller guards on the other end of the floor unc was playing through the post as well kennedy meeks and isaiah hicks were both established inside within the first few minutes of the game north carolina's motion offense wasn't particularly pretty the tar heels did get good off-ball movement but their spacing was crowded and chaotic particularly compared to more modern nba style space and as a result their shot selection was clunky at times too with catch and shoot mid-range jumpers from biggs roaming around the foul line area but even if it wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing style of play it's hard to argue with the results unc turned the game into a rock fight bowling their way to the rim attacking the offensive glass and just using size and strength to bother the zags the other thing that style of play did was put gonzaga's bigs in foul trouble karnowski zach collins and jonathan williams all had four fouls down the stretch forcing gonzaga to start doubling the post to protect their bigs and those double teams led to one of the biggest jumpers of the game from joel berry gonzaga's offense continued to flow through williams gas down the stretch they isolated him for back-to-back buckets to take the lead but this next play from isaiah hicks summed up the game on the drive unc has pretty awful spacing two guys clogging the paint and nobody in the corners but hicks drove the ball anyways and just overpowered williams when williams goss was blocked on the next possession the tar heels were champions once again [Music] i mentioned earlier how the 2016 version of villanova wasn't quite as three-point happy as you might expect from a villanova team well the 2018 version was in their six tournament games they shot more threes than twos however it was mo wagner and michigan who started out hot in the title game wagner showed his versatility scoring on a post up a catch and shoot three and a drive all in the game's first five minutes meanwhile jaylen brunson and mikhail bridges both had below average first half performances and villanova as a team started out cold from the field but that all changed with dante divincenzo he saved probably his best game of his villanova career for last coming off the bench during the championship and turning into the go-to offensive score divancenzo scored 31 points and hit five threes but was equally as successful attacking the basket and finishing at the rim from an x's and o standpoint villanova loved to slip ball screens omari spellman would come up to set the screen get wagner to commit to the ball handler and then just slip towards the basket here divincenzo looks off the tag man and finds spellman for the dunk on this play eric pascal slips the screen the other three are all occupying the defense on the weak side so pasco pops into the empty corner for a three because all five villanova players on the court could shoot the three those empty pick and pops were almost impossible to defend without switching in the second half the wildcats heated up bridges got hot knocking down a pair of big transition threes and d vincenzo's stayed high he won the most outstanding player award and helped villanova and jay wright earn their second championship in three seasons we've now reached 2019 which was the first season where i started making college basketball videos on this channel so i already have full length videos breaking down the virginia and baylor championships i'll link to those in the description but to quickly summarize some media members had low expectations going into virginia texas tech the wall street journal predicted it would be the ugliest national championship ever yahoo called it generationally unsexy and the pundits were right for about 5 minutes the game started out slow with virginia's pack line defense giving texas tech trouble by trapping the post and hedging ball screens meanwhile texas tech's no middle defense gave virginia trouble by forcing the ball baseline at the under 16 timeout the score was just 3-2 but what followed was actually one of the most fun championships of the decade texas tech started figuring out the pack line by setting flare screens out on the perimeter taking advantage of that sagging defense ty jerome had success against the no middle by driving baseline but looking to pass instead of score he found open three point shooters on that skip pass but after a while this game turned into a battle of spread ball screens even though both teams were known for motion style offenses that incorporate lots of player movement chris beard and tony bennett both adjusted during the game by just spreading the floor and going almost entirely to ball screens for their best players in fact you could literally see beard signaling for the spread throughout the game speaking of spread ball screens that was yet again the story in this year's title game for baylor the bears exploited drew timmy by putting him in those ball screens gonzaga started the game by having timmy play drop coverage but in just the first 10 minutes alone they switched the drop to a hedge and then the hedge to a switch none of those coverages were particularly effective against the baylor guards by spreading the court and letting jared butler and davion mitchell and macy ot go to work baylor took a commanding lead against the previously undefeated gonzaga bulldogs so if you're keeping score at home that's now three championships in a row where the winner relied on spreading the court utilizing the three-point line and just playing a more modern style of basketball villanova virginia and baylor that's probably not a coincidence it's where the game has been headed but to be fair we are just four years removed from that unc gonzaga post-up battle it's not that you can't win a title or make a final four playing a more traditional style of play houston did it this year but the game has undeniably changed over the past 21 years and i hope this video helped you see some of those changes thank you very much for watching an obligatory reminder to please hit those like and subscribe buttons the hoop vision newsletter has even more analysis from these championship games specifically on how ball screen usage has changed since 2000 link is in the description for that and see in the next one i'm saying so yeah we gonna do it big all day all night doing huge you guys have no idea what i'm talking about when i'm saying that but but my boys know the game boys know what i'm talking about i'm talking about hey corey you've been named [Music] you
