I Surprised My Girlfriend with a Rare Mercedes SLK55 AMG for Christmas

one two three open what [Music] well here I am again giving a car to my girlfriend / now fiance soon-to-be wife and if you all remember last year this didn't go over very well because I gave her a hoopty it was a 1997 BMW m3 that I bought for only $3,000 spent a little bit of money fixing it up and then I gave it to her still broken it broke even worse it was a total disaster and I immediately went to get it fixed again and again and again and it took a year and thousands of dollars before the car was finally sorted and at that point she had completely forgotten about it and I sold it I made it somebody else's problem very nice but I think I'm gonna do better this time because I didn't buy a hoopty it's a very rare AMG actually and the idea of buying this car actually started back in Telluride Colorado is there a few months back for a car show and one of the sponsors of this car show was the mercedes-benz Club of America now I'm not sure if you've ever been to a show where the MBC a shows up but it's kind of strange people will park their normal cars with the MBC a group like you'll see an ml but ml350 not even the AMG version parked on the field along with you know five-year-old C 300s and and that kind of stuff stuff that doesn't belong in a car show but people Park them out there anyway Mercedes you guys probably just because they want cheap parking and one of the cars there that and my fiance went crazy over was a CLK 350 convertible about 2007 that was bright red and it had the Sport Package but otherwise was a normal car now I took mental note of that let's enter that car show I sold my Tesla Model S a car that my fiance had been driving for the last six months and that gave me some ammo to buy something else it was a pretty expensive car that I sold but then I slipped up and bought my $15,000 Hyundai Equus which for some reason you all love that car it has more views than both my McLaren videos my Viper videos and my m5 video can combined I think which you all are weird but I'm not complaining with the December ad revenue but anyway I still had some money left over to buy her a car I'd actually asked her what she kind of wanted this time around and she gave me two parameters number one a convertible number two Rhett now the convertible part was easy but the red part turned out to be a total nightmare you see red is a very very uncommon color for a luxury car when someone's buying a luxury car they'll admire somebody else's red and Mercedes or their yellow BMW or puke green wagon Queen family truckster but when it comes time to buy a car themselves they'll go for black or silver or if they're really feeling adventurous White's they won't go with red now remember me talking about that trip earlier where she really liked the CLK 350 in red convertible well I had to find the AMG version of that the CLK 55 or CLK 63 AMG because I have to look at it in my driveway every day and you know my own selfish reasons maybe I'll track it or something but when I searched for CLK 55 or CLK 63 AMG s in the entire country that were red there was one one and it was at a dealership in Florida and it was $3,000 over Kelly Blue Book retail it had over a hundred thousand miles on it and it had an accident on the Carfax history report even worse it was pretty obvious that it had an accident because one headlight was all clouded over like they would when it's beaten down outside in the Florida Sun for over a decade and the other one was crystal clear and new indicating it had probably been hit on one side now I called this dealer and I told them that I was a cash buyer and I only wanted to pay killer black retail for it which is still way too much you could find these things for under 10 grand if they were silver or black and also I wanted to get a mechanical inspection on the car and they quit returning my phone calls almost immediately Florida the mecca of shady used car dealers go figure if you lived there you know but I was pretty despondent after that because there were no more red Mercedes to be had I considered buying a silver one or a black one and then wrapping it and red but that would be pretty ridiculous something like four thousand dollars to wrap a car that's worth you know fifteen thousand dollars it's the super dumb but then I remembered the slk55 AMG and read me a color that a lot of people got because it was good-looking or well I hadn't seen a few it's still really rare cuz when I did a national search there was only one for sale in the entire country this one and once again it was three thousand dollars over Kelly Blue Book retail now I'm the kind of guy that buys the cheapest car in the USA regardless of color but whatever the best deal is and I was stuck on this red thing but thankfully this was a franchise Mercedes dealer in Scottsdale Arizona very fancy dealer so I called this dealership up and it was a completely different experience they'd already been through the car service to put new tires on it it was checked out 100% and I told my was a cash buyer and I wouldn't pay over retail and they dropped the price four thousand dollars with without negotiating at all they just dropped the price so I didn't even really have to beat them up that much and here it is now it's not the cheapest slk55 in the USA by a lot but it is the cheapest red slk55 in the USA $19,000 and I'm feeling pretty good about this thing it's nice to buy a car that that doesn't need a bunch of crap when you first buy it that's it's a weird change for me oh wow holy moly so this slk55 is a pretty rare car only about 400 of them were made in 2008 so a really low production number and the best way to describe this car is like a very very refined AMG German version of an LS swapped Miata they put a big v8 5.4 liter v8 355 horsepower in a little anybody convertible now this is yeah this is just the normally aspirated one no supercharger which you'd finally eat 55 for the s 55 back in the day but even without it just because this is such a little car it had the same 0 to 60 as the e55 sedan back in the day that had four hundred and seventy years horsepower just really impressive about four and a half seconds to 60 feels every bit of that jee-m'nee there's also about $60,000 new and that came with a lot of cool features stuff I know Han will like and I'm really excited to finally show this thing to her but I probably need to test drive it just just a little bit longer before I give it to her oh yes [Applause] [Music] alright I'd better get it back to her before I freak this thing or crash it holy smokes okay cameras going we're ready to capture this hallmark moment this mercedes-benz winter event like the commercials - the bow but wish me luck I think she'll like it she better keep your eyes closed I know you're a peeker here I'm going to clover up your eyes kid you can alright hold on hold on no keep your eyes closed keep your eyes closed I can be right in the right position for the magical moment okay no you can't touch it were not that close one two three open okay I think she likes it yeah okay I'm sorry here come on up here so the 2008 Mercedes slk55 AMG 355 horsepower it's the fastest car probably in the fleet until the McLaren gets here never gets here but it pretty go ahead sit sit in it get your seat comfortable she closed the door on me okay she's gonna drive off you see that switch right there in the middle right here on the right just pull that back no that's the shifter the little button down by the shifter right here pull this back [Music] yeah hold it yes here's the Transformers part transformers origin bumblebee now in theaters it does work the top works yes and it's super cool hey you got to keep holding the button girl otherwise you got a giant air brake there you go there you go some other cool features in this car get paddle shifters which will probably never use heated seats which you're going to want to use right now so hit that button heated seats up here right here and then this button next to it is an air scarf and what that does is it blows warm air onto your neck there's a little bit right here you see this so then you can drive with the top down and not be cold and that cool you ready to go for a ride okay now please be very careful because this is an extremely fast car it's also a little low so you want to kind of back out at an angle in this driveway no reverse camera on this little car oh okay won't backseat drive all right let me turn on my hair scarf Pamela heated seats okay show me all the features uh-oh I'm not Doug demure oh I don't know but it goes it goes really fast turn right and floor it one sit straight [Music] not bad huh now there is one weird quirk with this car I guess if we're ducking out right now and that's this horrible cupholder system here this is your cup holder which I would not trust for anything that looks like if it dumps over it would just go right into your pants and ruin whatever's inside of there well you wanted a red convertible and this was the only one in the country that's the story you bout killed me with this red thing it is very pretty but so is silver and so is black the color thing made it very difficult but we got it taken care of oh yeah where you have to when you say and when you say that you have to say it first hey we're in Mexico doing 90 you don't admit the speed that you're going and now and now you're and now you're going 40 somewhere in between would be perfect I'm starting to get a little scared pop the hood it's down there by your foot no okay you can hop out I'll show you because just once you need to admire the engine on this car and then never look at it again but it is beautiful it's a work of art stunning huh yes and you can think let's see who built it because they're all hand-built in Germany actually they're not hand-built anymore AMG is built by Tobi and height so you can think Tobi and high for assembling your motor that's what your plaque says so Merry Christmas don't jump on me again I don't think about back in I think it's a success Merry Christmas and thank you for watching
