I MAKE A HAZEL WOLF STICK

since last December these statistics from the British retail Consortium show food inflation slowed to 13.4 last month [Applause] I wonder when humankind first reached for a stick [Music] was it when the last Rock was hurled and a desperate hand grasped a rough branch [Music] in that moment the human race discovered an ageless Aid to Conquest and survival [Applause] [Music] at all a weapon a stick [Music] before the bow before the spear sticks a video in our hands for millennia even today a stick is no less useful but much less carried why not change that why not make your own stick why not search out a characterful brunch fashion it Adorn it and carry it this is a piece of Hazel perhaps the most versatile wood you can find in the English Countryside and this is a wolfshead cane topper from the wolf cave designs in Norwich England you can find them on Etsy this wonky piece of Hazel is lovely and dry it was tanked down about 12 months ago part of the process of copising a Hazelwood the bark is still attached but I'm going to remove it and tidy up all these little bumps and Hollows and then crafted such that it'll fit the topper and then I hope I'll have a wolf stick [Music] foreign so that's the main stem of this wonky piece of Hazel now cleaned of bark it's got to be sanded yet lots more work to do but that's that bit done now my attention turns to the wonky end [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] well that's the basic work done on this wonky and quirky Hazel stick now all I've got to do is finish it off [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] laughs [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] how many people have passed this way carrying a homemade stick [Music] herders to flanks of acorn swelled pigs maybe school kids knocking down sweet chestnuts may you be a veteran of War studying a shattered body with an open shaft a snake has been an uncomplaining companion for as long as we've walked the Earth it can be raised in defense or used to part Nettles and brambles or probe the depth of a stream or just lent upon of an evening and I wonder just wonder how many men in their Twilight years have paused here stick in hand [Music] so that's my wolf stick quickly made from a rough piece of Hazel it just shows you what you can do very quickly with a scrap piece of wood but what a wonderful topper from the wolf cave so if you fancy a bit of stick making why don't you have a go yourself it's really quite easy see you next time [Music] foreign [Music] foreign
