watch me take a toy from the dollar store and customize it into this awesome sci-fi prop let's [Music] go I picked up a dart gun from the dollar store here in Japan for 200 yen Which is less than $150 us and it has some good shapes to build on there are some things to improve remove and cover up but it's already a space gun as you can see I'll have to do something with the made in China text these screw holes and some gaps at the very least let's crack it open and get a better idea of what we're working with [Music] here a number of parts and there's some kind of grease on the moving ones so let's get it all washed with some warm soapy water after it dried I started sanding and filing there was a whole lot of sanding this isn't the kind of plastic that takes paint well being a cheap plastic toy there are some areas where the detail is kind of smoothed over like these seams on the grip I used a fine metal scribe and I slowly went over the outline until it was deep enough to differentiate it as two different parts I scribed some other lines as well as you can see here sanding it all took quite a while but it's all prepped now and ready to customize I broke out a bunch of bits and old chunks of things I wanted to add an extended barrel and the shape of these prints inspired me to design a snug custom Barrel to fit the top of the gun had these sights on it that looked a bit goofy so they had to [Music] go looking around where I can add and subtract things I dug out a small section for a little rectangular vent to sit [Music] flush and then I glued it in place along with a few other [Music] GBL next I wanted to fit some custom parts that needed all kinds of measuring and iteration to get right being small parts I could go quickly between versions in blender to printer blender and printer until I got something I was happy [Music] with that was true for the part between the slide and the barrel and also these little side inserts one side of these needs to hold some metal hardware at an angle I was able to get closer and closer to the exact part I needed by trial and [Music] error once I was happy I glued it in place with the slide fixed all the way to the back there's now a huge gap over the grip I went through the same kind of iterative process and got the perfect snap fit on version 4 not too shabby the last printed detail I added was this top mounting rail that pops right into place too this was a very satisfying process I added a few panels of styrene to each side by first transferring the shape I needed by doing a pen pencil rubbing over the part and then cutting it from styrene [Music] sheet since I'm going for a good look and a good feel for this prop I need to fix how lightweight this is I was able to add nearly 300 G of weight and you might be able to guess how these plastic pieces are really light because they're thin which which means there's a lot of empty space to work with on the inside I had some Hardware left over from a recent project and I figured it would help to fit them in the cavities I designed some parts to mate the hardware snugly to the inside of the gun and I mean snug we're getting there but still not heavy enough I dug out a bunch of washers that I had and packed them in into the handle making little bundles with masking tape for the screw holes I found that these little bits fit perfectly inside and then a 2mm styrene Rod fit perfectly inside those so I'll use these to plug the holes later on with all the parts made I prepped it all for spraying and I primed it with a dark brown surfacer primer after it was primed I separated the parts into Patches by base color of gunmetal red and black and it was on to the airbrush let's reassemble everything to see how the base coats turned out now that it's together I can see what needs to be added and adjusted like this visible seam that needs to be touched up in Black black I finally found a neutral colored popper for a mini palette some of this gunmal is visible through the red and I want it to be black more black details and I painted those little side gbl's bronze for a splash of a bright accent color I was going for a of metallics while trying to avoid plain silver you can see the reds are a little off here between the slide and the body of the Blaster but you'll see I'll weather them together by the end I screwed everything back [Music] together and I check to make sure the trigger still worked okay I used some silver and the red needed did a little bit of [Music] contrast what's better than white stripes after the stripes were painted I came back with a similar red to the base and I started to add [Music] chipping I also used a darker color and a sponge to add some color variation time to add these screw hole plugs the concentric gray and white was pretty cool but I needed to grunge it up so I gave them a dirty red Brown wash and then I kept [Music] [Music] going I grabbed my brush again and started highlighting some edges with silver to define the blockier shapes more and to give the effect of rubbing and scraping through [Music] [Music] use after that I made a very dilute black and brown wash to slather all over the whole Blaster pulling off the excess with tissues and paper [Music] towels [Music] the final step was to go over spots here and there with some Tama weathering powder soot and a black panel [Music] liner this thing is so fun to just pick up and play with the metallics and chipping are something I'm really proud of I think it looks cool even without the long barrel and I made a stubby one that I didn't bother to paint I prefer the longer style but let me know what you think I don't usually make fulls siiz props but I think I might need to now holding something like this is pretty magical thank you to all of my patreons supporting my creat creativity with an extra special thank you to Sensei level Patron Adam scratch Builder level supporters Andrew price
