it was the first day of my college i loved helping people so i was going for a degree in philanthropy and since it was the first day i was a little nervous so after the first lecture i went to the library to see if i could find anyone to have a meaningful conversation with but when i reached there i was pretty disappointed as there was not a single soul in there well except for the librarian so i thought i would just check out some books instead as i was passing by an aisle i suddenly bumped into someone and all the books that person was carrying fell down i am very sorry i'm so clumsy a girl said as she sat down to pick up the books she was beautiful with her blonde hair and innocent eyes no it was me i wasn't looking here let me help you i said and started helping her pick up her and thought i should text joy so i did with just a lame hi but i got an instant reply hey i'll be off in five meet you outside it read so i waited for her there she met me five minutes later as she had said man we went for a coffee it was so fun talking to her i told her i was from a political family and that my parents were rich but i didn't want to be known by that and she told me that her family was poor so she had to work even though she wanted to go to college and she couldn't afford it i felt a little bad for her when she said that but we continued talking and the next thing you know we were meeting like that every other day as if we were dating eventually one day we made it official when i asked her to be my girlfriend now that was the easy part the part where i had to tell my family about her or even introduce her to them was the hard one you see both my parents and grace my elder sister were very reputed politicians it ran in our family and that led us to be one of the wealthiest families so because of that my family wanted me to date or be seen with someone with the same reputation as us and my mom especially was on my back all the time telling me to ask the mayor's daughter susanna out for a dinner if she only knew what a brat and a bully susanna was i wished sometimes as i didn't want to hurt joy i couldn't talk about all those things with her that was why i was preparing myself mentally to introduce joy to them one day grace came to my room and said we're having a dinner party tonight susannah will be here too then she winked at me and left she loved to pick on me but right then i thought that it would be a perfect moment to introduce my girlfriend to them so right before the party i went to pick up joy and brought her to my house as we entered my house together her eyes lit up wow you're really really rich she said as she scanned my house well it's all my parents i said trying to be humble there were a lot of people in my house including susannah whom i couldn't care less about my parents were busy talking to other people but i gathered my courage and made my way to them along with joy hi dad mom grace this is my girlfriend joy i sat as i reached where they were my parents looked at me and then at joy i was praying they didn't say anything hurtful and to my surprise they didn't hi joy what a beautiful girl my mom said and went to hug her and grace-hugged her too i was so relieved as it wasn't as hard as i had thought it would be the rest of the party went so smoothly we ate drank and talked mostly i was so glad that my family was nice to joy after the party was over i dropped joy off at her house and came back the next day my parents called for me to talk in the living room so i went there directly from my room as i reached it i saw that my parents and grace were waiting for me there so i went and sat down with them what do you want to talk to me about i said after sitting down sam you need to stop seeing that girl you brought home yesterday said my mom i was confused they were so nice to her just the other day but that wasn't an unusual behavior coming from them they were politicians after all good to everyone to their faces but not the same behind their back i will not i replied after getting lost in thoughts for a while we checked on her and her family information she's a nobody sam grace said which made me a little mad well she is somebody to me i said in an angry tone but i soon realized how rude it was so i apologize to grace please get to know her at least i said again and left the room a few days later my parents told me that they were invited on a cruise ship tour for the inauguration of a brand new cruise ship it was a four night tour out on the sea and i was so excited about it can i bring joy along i asked my parents they denied at first but had to agree as i was insistent and told them i wasn't going if she wasn't later that day i met joy at a park for a walk as we were walking i told her that we were going on a cruise ship to her she stopped and looked at me are you kidding me she said no we're leaving the day after tomorrow i replied she screamed and jumped from excitement and hugged me after that i asked her to go to her house and start packing and we both went our ways on the first day of the tour we reached the port to be welcomed by a huge cruise ship named artemis waiting for us to take us to the sea as soon as we got on the ship we were given welcome drinks and the staff took us to the vip area joy was excited to be there as it was her first time on a ship this is so luxurious more than any place i've ever been in my life other than your house she said which made me smile i was glad that she was having a good time however this time my parents were not all sweet on joy like before so i was feeling more protective of her than usual we were informed that there was going to be a ball so we got to our room and started dressing up for the event then we came out to the lounge area where there was music playing with waiters taking seafood snacks and drinks around it was a lovely environment as if some festivity was going on and with my beautiful girlfriend on my side i was having the best time of my life suddenly the music stopped and we saw that the captain was going up to the stage for the greet and welcome speech will it be rude if i go use the bathroom joy asked innocently as i was focused on the captain of course not go ahead i replied and made way for her the captain was almost done with his speech and was raising his champagne glass but right then four masked people took over the stage and held the captain at gunpoint there was chaos for a moment as people started to scream and run here and there but then one of the masked men took to the microphone and screamed shut the hell up and stay where you are or we will not be kind to this captain of yours everyone went quiet so the masked man spoke again this vessel is hijacked and we will only leave when our demands are met i was scared to my bones as i knew my family being there must be one reason that the ship was chosen for hijacking but right then my moms and grace's bodyguards started walking up front towards the hijackers along with the ship's security to give our family cover so my parents i and grace snuck out of the lounge to the deck as quietly as we could behind we could hear the hijacker screaming at the security don't come any further or you'll all be doomed if we take your captain as we reached outside my father's bodyguard and i went to the side of the vessel to launch the lifeboat so that we could get back to the mainland port but then i remembered joy was still in there and i had almost forgotten about her dad joy's inside i said as we were about to launch the boat leave her son she'll be fine she's not one of us my dad replied how could i she was there because of me and it would be so cowardly of me to abandon her there but i couldn't risk my family's life in the process of going in and saving her i was in a huge dilemma do i save my family or my girlfriend i couldn't choose so i made a tough decision i launched the boat and asked grace to get in and then my parents along with the bodyguard then i told them that they have to go on without me as i had to go and save joy as well she was alone in there be safe my mom shouted from the lifeboat with a sad look on her face she knew i was stubborn and would do the right thing no matter what after ensuring my parents safety i started making my way in to save joy like i was her jack and she was my rose on the titanic but when i got in i was shaken before i left there were only four hijackers and now there were five and one of them was joy and the security guards were all kneeling down with guns pointed at them well look who's here the vip of this hijack she said as she saw me coming in you ruined my plan sending your family off now you will pay she added and made me kneel down with my hands on my head and pointed a gun at me she told me that she only agreed to go out with me because she knew i was rich and when she saw my house she had planned to rob my family for a long time so she made a plan to get money from us on the cruise as it would be easier with less security and amidst the sea as she was explaining to me her evil plan i noticed that the gun that she was carrying was fake and so were the other men's although i was anti-gun possession i knew the difference between real and fake guns having been to the shooting range multiple times with my dad so i signaled the security and screamed their guns are fake let's take them down instantly the security team got up and started taking the men down one by one joy was trying to flee but i grabbed her arm tightly later a security person came and took her from me she was screaming and apologizing begging me to help her but she had broken my trust so i walked away from her promising myself to never see her face ever again a couple of hours later a helicopter my parents had sent landed on the helipad and i got in and got off to get home thanks for watching have you ever had to choose between with hazel and the two intruders were in our parents room they had tied our hands and legs tied us to a chair and taped our mouths shut meanwhile they were trying to pick the lock of the safe in the room but they saw that we were conscious so one of them came to us and said i'm going to open one of your tapes and you're going to answer what we ask if you try to scream it wouldn't be good then he pulled out a gun and showed it to us and put it back away after that he reached for the tape on my mouth and took it off as he had said i didn't scream or say anything do you know the passcode of this safe he asked no we don't i replied we honestly had no ideas we never paid attention to the safe when's your birthday he asked again september 20th i replied and the other person tried to put it in as a code but the safe didn't open the man that was asking questions got angry and taped my mouth shut again but then hazel started making a sound from underneath the tape i knew that she used to get suffocated quickly but the intruders didn't so i started making noise as well to get their attention shut them up i can't focus the one working on the safe said so the other one came to us again and this time open the tape from hazel's mouth what he said i can't breathe like this she replied he went to the other guy and whispered something into his ear next thing you know they were carrying us down to our basement they dropped us there our hands and feet were still tied but they took the tape off of our mouth okay you go to work on the safe and i'll guard them one said i need you up there we need to break the safe the other replied then the guy with a gun looked at us and said don't try to scream or try to be smart i'll blow your heads off and they went upstairs again to my parents room locking the basement door in the dark hazel and i were trying very hard to undo the rope that they had tied to our hands we were constantly trying and failing it was not an easy job obviously it's not working hazel was crying in disappointment she was afraid and so was i just keep trying i replied and kept trying myself a few moments later hazel gasped yes she was doing it finally freeing herself out of the rope after untying the ropes on her own hands and legs she came to me and untied mine we hugged each other and then started talking about what we should do next in a very low voice what do we do now hazel asked and honestly i didn't have a single clue about that but suddenly i remembered something a few days before my dad's poor handyman skill had caused a crack in the basement's window and if we strike it one more time the glass would come off giving us a way out but there was a catch the breaking of the glass would make a sound and the window was so small only one of us could get out at a time that meant we would have only enough time for one of us to get out before the intruders came down after the sound it was me or my sister no matter the catch i decided to tell the idea to my sister one of us has to stay here i said after telling her the full plan you should go and get help i said again as i wanted her to be safe but she didn't agree harley everyone knows that you're the marathon champion and fastest runner in our school you should go and get help they might catch me but they won't be able to catch you she said so we decided that i was the one to go out and my sister was going to stay there and distract them if they came down then we tried to find a heavy object in the dark with very little light but since it was the basement it wasn't hard hazel instantly found a hammer we wasted no time and went towards the window i looked at my sister and said i'll come back soon after that i climbed a box to reach the window and as soon as i did i hit the glass with a hammer as we had predicted it made a loud sound so i immediately cleared the glass and climbed out then i started running without looking back even once i instantly ran to my neighbors across the street and started knocking on the door mr harris please open the door i cried as i knocked but they didn't answer so i didn't waste any more time there quickly i ran to another neighbor's house and started knocking but there too i got no response but i had to keep trying so i ran to another neighbor's stafford's house i knocked on their door and screamed mr and mrs stafford please open the door the light of the porch turned on and the door opened mr stafford saw me and asked harley what are you doing here at this time i told him that our house had been broken into and everything that had happened he let me in and immediately called the police he gave them our address and handed me the phone to call my parents so i did i called my parents and told them everything they told me that they would be home instantly soon we heard police car sirens so we went out and walked towards my house there were two police cars parked in front of our house they had just reached and were getting out of the car as we were walking in we saw that our front door was wide open we immediately went in to see that the intruders were already gone and that they had opened my parents safe as well but that was not the important thing so the first thing i did was run to the basement with the police there i saw my sister she had been tied again and her mouth was shut with tape she was crying i hurriedly removed the tape from her mouth and untied the ropes as soon as i did that she hugged me and cried even more what happened i asked she told us that as soon as i got out they came down as they saw the window broken and that i wasn't there the gunman took out his gun and put it to her head didn't i tell you not to act smart he said but the other one interrupted and said that they had to leave so he slapped her hard he was angry because of which she fell on the floor and then tied her and left but what she told me next made me so proud of her she told us that when he had a gun to her head she went for his jacket and took out his purse and as she fell she threw it under a shelf since the guy was so angry he didn't even notice so i went to the shelf crouched down and pulled a purse from under there i gave it to the police officer without opening it she opened it and found a driver's license but the photo was cut out from it henry baker she read out does your family have anything to do with henry baker she asked no not that we know of i replied then she called her office and asked to look him up in the system after that we heard someone calling our name from upstairs hazel harley it was our parents so we went upstairs and as we reached they came running towards us and hugged us then the police officer asked our parents to check the safe and see what items were missing my mom quickly ran in and went through everything in the safe after what she said next we were all left confused nothing is missing from here all the cash and pieces of jewelry are here she said so why did they go through all the trouble of breaking into your house and then you're safe the officer asked after she said that my father rushed towards the safe to check for something they took my drive he said with a worried look on his face he told the officer that he had a drive in the safe that had decades of our family business records and it was very important as it could disclose all of our clients information so we had only one thing to do go to the address of henry baker as quickly as possible for that the police officer asked my dad to come along one of you sisters should come with us to identify him she said it was again me or my sister i looked at hazel and saw that she was pretty shaken up so i told the officer that i would go along i got into my dad's car and we followed behind the police car after driving for about half an hour we made a stop in front of an old apartment building we got out of the car and started making our way into the building behind the police officers the elevator of the building was not working so we had to take the stairs the address said he lived on the third floor when we reached in front of his door the police officers told us to stay behind they knocked on the door and from inside a man came shouting who is it this late he said and opened the door i instantly recognized his voice it was that guy with a gun it's him i screamed and the officers quickly grabbed him and cuffed him before he could run or do anything and took him inside we also went in to find that he wasn't the only one in the apartment there were two other guys who also surrendered to the police my dad said that he recognized one of the guys he told the police that the third guy who was not one of the intruders was his business rival that meant he was the mastermind and that he had hired the gunman and the locksmith to break into her house and steal the drive to steal our business secrets and clients the police arrested them and were about to take them to jail but i had unfinished business with the gunman so i went up to him and i punched him on the nose that's for hurting my sister i said and then my dad and i headed stared for a few minutes then decided that i didn't want to be involved even if it meant being lonely i calmly walked out of the room and out of the building as i reached outside i heard the fire alarm go off i decided to take a stroll in the park to clear my head and then i walked home when i got home my mom was waiting near the entrance jordan i was so worried about you she hugged me mom ew what's gotten into you what's going on i asked you didn't hear your school is on fire i was so scared that you were still in there she shouted i went to the living room and watched my burning school on the television screen oh my gosh i thought they were only supposed to burn down one classroom how did this happen i had a greater scare when the news anchor came on and said the camera footage has been distorted a bit but our experts are working on it we believe we have found the culprit as according to the school security guard there was no one else at the school they played a blurry video but it was clear that the boy in the video was me luckily my mom didn't realize but it would be only a matter of time until the authorities figured it out and i would be blamed for burning down the entire school when i really did nothing but walk away i was terrified and i wanted to cry my brain was running at 10 000 miles per hour i didn't want to get caught or sent to a juvenile detention center what was the punishment for burning down a school anyway i had to do something quickly i decided to pack a bag and run away i took all the money i had been saving in a box under my desk and stuffed it into my bag i waited until about midnight when everyone in my house was asleep and i snuck out i went to a bus station and bought a ticket to the state next door luckily nobody asked me any questions about why i was out all by myself i got under the bus sat at the back next to a window and fell asleep when i woke up the driver had turned on the radio and everyone was listening to the news i was about to doze off again when i heard the news reporter say we have identified the arsonist who set fire to an entire middle school yesterday his name is jordan thompson and he's only 12 years old who would have thought that a child could be so destructive his parents were questioned and they have informed us that their son has run away this is definitely evidence that he is guilty i was so scared that i hid my face for the rest of the bus ride when i arrived in the other state the reality hit me that i was all alone i had no home no bedroom no bathroom no loving parents it was just me against the world but i had to be strong i went to buy some hair dye and some colored contact lenses i was sure that my face would be all over the news soon and i needed to change my appearance quickly when i bought the products i went to a random public bathroom which luckily for me was empty i dyed my blonde hair black and put some brown contact lens over my gray eyes after that i was feeling hungry so i bought a snack and just walked around aimlessly nobody knew who i was and no one could identify me so that made me feel at peace a bit after feeling like a tourist for a while i felt really tired i came across a park so i walked inside and sat on a bench my eyes felt really heavy and eventually i fell asleep when i woke up the temperature had dropped i looked around and noticed an old lady sitting next to me hi dear where are your parents are you okay she asked they're in another state and no i'm not okay i don't have anywhere to sleep tonight i answered i hated lying and technically that was the truth oh no dear child you can stay with me let's go home she replied she got up and i followed her she lived just around the block her house was very cute it was only one story high and quite small but she had a lovely garden with many different types of flowers planted outside my name is martha by the way my son robert moved out a few years ago and i live all by myself he has a family and he never comes to visit me i'm grateful for the company you can have his old room she said i felt extremely lucky for the next few weeks martha treated me like her own grandson she made the most excellent meals ever and she never asked for much in return i'd clean the house and water the plants in the garden i also did the grocery shopping so she could stay home and relax i missed my parents dreadfully but i knew it was too risky to go home i started to feel convinced that this would be my home forever but everything changed one afternoon i was in the garden watering the plants when i noticed a random policeman walking up and down the block the next day i saw the same man walking near the house but he was wearing plain clothes this time he looked at me suspiciously it happened again for the next three days so i was convinced that they knew who i was i felt really bad to do this to martha but i stole a few dollars from her purse and left the house while she was sleeping i wrote her a note thanking her for all she had done for me i let her know that i took some money and that i would return it to her whenever i could i walked quickly to the bus station and bought another bus ticket out of the state it felt like i spent days on the bus because whenever i reached one state i took a bus to another when i was seven states away from home i decided to try to look around for somewhere to stay i went to a park hoping to meet another kind old lady like martha but i had no luck i wandered around for a long time until i was finally so exhausted that i collapsed in front of an old looking building i woke up to someone tugging at my shirt hey little man what are you doing sleeping out there a badly dressed untidy man asked i don't have anywhere to stay my parents are far away and i'm all alone i replied come with me you can stay with me and my friends it's not a five-star hotel but it's home he said i don't know why but i felt like there was something about him i could trust i followed him until we reached an area under a bridge there were at least 20 huge cardboard boxes scattered around this is home i'm henry by the way he said there was an entire homeless community i looked around in awe hey everyone henry shouted we have a new friend everyone came out of their boxes to greet me the next few days were weird it took me a while to get used to this type of life but the people were so friendly and because i'm a child they treated me kindly i was able to do a few little jobs here and there to make some money i still live in this community under the bridge and i've decided that i will stay there until i can make enough money to leave the country i'd probably have to wait until i turn 18 though maybe after that i'll contact my
