hi I am Brady Hege and what you are seeing on screen right now is probably the first ever game that I made in clickteam fusion it's called summer at the schoolhouse and for the longest time as I learned scratch and eventually click team and now I'm on unity and there's still a part of me that wants to develop this game even though I know it's never going to happen this was sort of my my brainchild this was the project that I wanted to create at some point in some form and as you can see it's not the best looking of games but I didn't even realize that this file still existed until literally yesterday the crazy thing is that a while ago I deleted a ton of files from the Documents folder and file explorer it was all on accident but I lost pretty much everything that I was programming at that time and had been programming in the past but I didn't remember that when I had first started game development I was an idiot and stored everything in the Downloads folder and so here this game was sitting for over a year now untouched and forgotten in the Downloads folder and I am really really excited that I have found it so today I thought that I could just play through the game throw out my thoughts about it and get super super nostalgic because I am really excited that I found this game and just doesn't warning this game isn't good aim isn't even decent this game is bad but it still holds a very special place in my heart because it's pretty much the first game that I ever made outside of scratch and I would her like I thought that this was going to be a blockbuster but anyway let's uh let's boot up summer at the schoolhouse alright so as you can see right off the bat we've got a 480p game window not the most to attractive menu screen as you can see you can walk here and I I don't care what you think about the walking animation that's definitely what humans look like when they walk but um anyway I was pretty proud of this menu in all honesty I thought that it looked really good and I was proud of the dynamic looking menu screen I shouldn't have been but I was I was proud of the way that this looked III do a pre you gotta appreciate how the rain just kind of stops once you once it hits the building I I don't even know what camera angle this is supposed to be but it's not right I know that now if you look at the different objects in this game you'll see that I was going for a sort of Pixlr look however two things first of all when scaling up these sprites I did not make sure to uncheck anti-aliasing and so some of these sprites are blurry just incredibly blurry and then secondly there's no consistent pixel size like you might not know this if you don't if you haven't ever worked with pixel art the way that you design pixel art is you create the images most of the time and a smaller scale and then you scale all images up by maybe 400% and it has to be a multiple of 100% because otherwise the pixels won't look square anymore so for example I created a game a while ago that I never released and all the pixels were scared scaled up exactly 400% but in this game like you can see that the ground the the grass I just didn't care enough to scale up the sprite because I just I literally designed that in the clickteam frame editor so that's why it looks so bad it this is just absolutely pathetic um oh and the jump let's just [Music] yep I was convinced that this was going to be a smash hit alright so right off the bat were dropped in to this in this room and looks like the powers been off for a long time I'll need to find some sort of breaker if even that'll work I I don't know I'm sure that I thought that I was amazing at writing back then but yeah that anti a-listening aliasing that I was talking about on the pixel size is very present in the doorknob as you can see the doorknobs pixels are not all the same size and that's because I probably scaled it up by a hundred and fifty percent or whatever and so not all of the pixels are square it just looks so bad and then the tiles on the floor I don't even know what I was going for but like I just write all I need is is a consistent pixel size that's all I needed to do also it's it's crazy because I think I mentioned this in my old scratch games video as well but it's funny to think about this was only a year ago not even a year and it seems so amateurish that it seems like it would be years ago but you can tell like this game has the same sense of humor that I do now there's a poster on the wall of the schoolhouse that says learn or I will shank you that's something that I would do today and it's just crazy how it seems so long ago but this is not that old of a project and that is both scary and kind of incredible alright so you press you to turn on this breaker here I know it was a wonderful animation truly and then you can proceed to hide under this help desk alright so the game just awkwardly jolts to first-person view which I thought would be a fantastic mechanic there's no game that blends third and first-person view but no no it's just jarring and confusing but anyway you have the ability to just click this key right here and boom you collected the key no animation no no that that's for dumb people is a smart person alright so you can see that there's no prompt to tell you what to do now but I know from frustratedly testing over and over that you have to press s to X or exit this desk and while the lights remain on and the animation remained consistent use respawn in the sand like the very beginning of the room which is just just such an easy thing to fix like what was what was I even doing all right so let's enter this door by pressing e as the prompt so obnoxiously tells us to do so also let's take a moment to admire this letter e okay I can't indicate to it with my mouse because I set this game to hide the mouse cursor but you can tell that the lengths of the stem coming off of the e there are all different lengths as well as different widths what was I doing alright so you drop into another room and it appears that you're in some kind of hallway alright here we go I guess we'll do a little exploring and you get a prompt why have you get not gotten a prompt to this point seems awful inconsistent I know I know but just just don't question it you got a prompt and you've got to find the kill room now the kill room is actually a really interesting part of the game see what the kiln was was when I was in elementary school we had a Kent a kiln for firing clay a kiln is basically this giant room that you put a ton of clay in and then it gets incredibly hot and that's how the clay goes from clay to ceramic so they I think a lot of elementary schools have it done somewhere else but my school actually had this clay fired in the school but anyway I thought that I would make up this complex plot where someone was murdered in the kiln room which I did it just wasn't good also why is the sign at the very top of the door I'll tell you why because this door is an imported object but the sign is part of the backdrop and that's why it looks so crappy also again take a moment to acknowledge how bad these tiles look like they just look so bad I don't even like looking at all right so you're all up to the bathrooms right and you walk past the boys bathroom nothing strange right and then you see Oh golly gee is that a pair of eyes staring me in the face guess it is oh boy oh boy oh boy that sure is scary am i right yeah jump scare the freaking century no audio cues no nothing just eyes that's it all right so first of all it's notable that this sign the one that state I'm pointing to it I are you like you can't see where I'm pointing the sign that says art room is lower than the signs it indicating the room numbers and that's because this sprite was actually one that I imported like an idiot all right so you passed the art room and you find this room which seems to be covered in some sort of police tape and locked hmm what is this I don't know let's press e to find out Oh golly cheap the door's locked we got another prompt though we're gonna find something to open this here door alright so you can't really venture that much further you just see the end of the hallway as a parent made it as made a parent by your view scrolling stopping so I guess we have to go back and see if we find anything new so you walk past the girls bathroom again and Oh golly gee the eyes don't appear this time that's because I made a global value that saves if you've already seen the eyes I have 24 global values that I could have used and I decided that I was going to waste one of them on pies you know what I probably could've used an eye an eye right and I and I but no no no no no no we're using a global value that saves if you have walked past a room this game is bad so we come to another room here we're back at room two it you couldn't open the door earlier but now if you open the door golly gee you're dropped back into another room I know right such good game design also acknowledging that the blackboard says I will not flip off my teacher like someone was writing lines comedy gold yes good comedy gold and then it looks kind of like crap and it's because I did all of this with a mouse I didn't have a tablet yet so I I designed all this pixel art with a mouse and that's why it looks like garbage all right cool let's press e to open this box that is if our characters five feet tall probably a 48 inch tall box what the heck all right so I scrounged around the box and I found a really old Apple a hairpin a key and I could only take one you could probably fit all three of those things in one pocket but no no the game only allows you to take one and this is just the garbage garbage texts like I couldn't have imported a string I could have done anything but actually make the text in pixel art which is what I chose to do for some stupid reason but anyway you try and take the key it tells you oh I guess it's the wrong key see it's misleading cuz you think you'd have to take a key but no you have to take a pin so you decide to take the pin you press E and you press s to go back into the main hallway so golly gee let's see if that pin will remove the police tape and lock from the door so we're back in the kennel room and let's just see if we can press E now oh wow all right that did it I guess let's see what's behind this door now oh gosh there's this guy suddenly chasing me now what the heck is happening nothing makes sense the world is scary what if I stop running oh he catches me I died okay press any key to continue let's press ENTER run okay we got a run again now I guess this is just gonna keep making me run over and over until I eventually get to where I've been running to what the heck I think this is probably heavily inspired by the Chase at the end of Act one of hello neighbor but if you barely make it and press e crap I got killed again it's actually pretty difficult because he runs just a bit faster than you so you have to just like you have to start immediately and make it alright so boom summer at the schoolhouse boom that is how you do a beta and to clarify this wasn't a finished game this was I thought like a beta for a game that would eventually be developed I thought that maybe I could create this beta put it up on gamejolt and then a lot of people would play it like markiplier and jacksepticeye I'm then one by the time that that would had been really hyped up I could drop the main release I was convinced that the first game that I ever made would be a smash hit and we can all tell how that worked out so I guess if there's any moral to be learned from all this there's probably two actually the first one is don't get too big for your britches and think that the first game that you make and clickteam fusion or unity or scratch or whatever is immediately going to blow up because unless you're like the point zero one percent it's not gonna blow up like I arguably have not gained any popularity on YouTube at all and I've been doing it for two years I'm just now starting to see any growth and subscribers whatsoever and then the other one is don't let making garbage like what you see on the screen right now don't let that discourage you because you're going to get better as long as you keep trying so yeah I think that's that's pretty much it I'm Brady Hege I hope you enjoyed the video thanks for watching this video that I made by
