fellas today i discovered a disturbing truth behind ninjago the theme has such deep and rich lore there's countless wikipedia pages books tv episodes and other media that we all know about but what if i were to tell you that there's more to it than meets the eye now obviously in europe each month lego releases a new ninjago magazine which has a free minifigure puzzles games as well as a short comic story which coincides with the season out of that time this has been an ongoing tradition and as you can probably imagine i own quite a lot of these yeah the issue with these stories is however that they have to fit within the limited page they're given and nothing super interesting or new is able to happen and instead we're sort of just given some filler between different events that really adds nothing to ninjago as a whole what you probably don't know however is that ninjago has had a completely separate standalone comic series which i had no idea even existed whilst i'd been living in my own sad little magazine world the rest of the world had been indulging in some of the finest literature to date according to the ninjago wiki there is a total of 18 ninjago graphic novels that were released each not only tying in with the season that they were based off and also adding new aspects to the show that had been as of yet unexplored in nintendo honestly i think that they should include this book because i colored it myself this is art but other than that i really have no idea what the hell these graphic novels are all about and i need to find out because how can i possibly enjoy the anime without reading the manga so i hopped onto ebay typed up ninjago graphic novels and found this listing here which had five comics with the starting bid of only four pounds so naturally i offered 15. was that a good idea did i just get rinsed i have no idea but i won yay me and before long the comics had arrived at my doorstep in a rather suspicious looking package i just kind of realized that these books actually have a chronological order to them so i'm slightly worried that i'm not gonna know what's going on i'm gonna be honest i'm so dumb here we go we're diving in i can feel the reading that's gonna be done the beauty oh look at this oh my god these are literally in like immaculate condition holy look at this this is so glorious man i'm gonna go ahead read through all of these books and see what i can find out which is probably gonna be quite a lot that's a lot of books now to be honest i'm not much of a reader but let me tell you these books were an absolute delight one thing i immediately noticed was just how much more interesting the stories were because of the longer run time each installment is able to have a self-contained story and the narrative is able to be explored in further detail and come to a satisfying conclusion and the stories that are explored in this are just so abstract you've got kai fighting the rest of the ninja who think he's a skeleton sensei we find all of his old foes inside of his dream and a giant goddamn garmadon who can shoot lasers from his eyes in a medium like this there are so many different visuals which are only possible with drawings which leads to us getting panels like this this or even this these comics also allow additional insights into characters that we would never really get to see in the show in destiny of doom for example we get to see the immediate after effects of the final battle where kylie still doesn't trust garmadon and garmadon begins to wonder if it was purely the great devourer that turned him evil or if it was just something that he'd always had inside of himself and then they have to fight a 300-foot tall garmadon who shoots lasers from his eyes floats on a spinner attached to a rocket because why not they even explore zayn coming to terms with the fact that he'll never be able to joke feel pain love or be love causing him to fight and kidnap the other ninja to try and transfer his mind into kai so that he can feel something the issue with these comics is however that they're not necessarily canon to the main ninjago timeline within these books there are several glaring contradictions to the show spinjitsu basically acting as a jitsu and allowing the ninja to fly characters never being seen again and entire stories that just feasibly couldn't fit into the main ninjago timeline and the sad thing is some of these things 100 should have been added to the show cole is shown to be a devoted leader which adds to his character lloyd's shown to have an awful haircut which to be honest if they were going to add any character to the show it should be lloyd's barber because jesus christ he did him so dirty but apparently one of these books could actually be considered canon because it doesn't contradict with the show in the phantom ninja we're introduced to a new character called salil who's trying to free her father from the nindroids grass under the name the phantom ninja to me she seems like an incredibly interesting character that could just be added to the show somehow it's pretty clear that the show at least took some influence from the events of the comics even though they came out years before where we see early concepts of elemental masters and garmadon returning and in case you're wondering yes these comics really do live up to their name but there are still 13 comics that i've got left to read so who the hell knows what else i've missed out on hell only a few days ago two new ninjago prequels were released which tell the story of gamadon and wu decades in the past who on earth cares about school i'm gonna do some real learning i mean look at these images even if you're completely illiterate these books are so colorful and fun but don't go too far or else you might start reading the satanic bible but i hate it when that happens and they're not too expensive either ebay literally has every single one of these listed for around three to four pounds and not only the story's great but there's so much love and care put into each and every one of these books i mean look that's the map of the golden weapons that's so unnecessary but cool the artwork is absolutely stunning on literally every single page and seeing these jargo characters in a medium like this is so refreshing and really makes me wish that we got to see it more often i'd love to see these brought back for newer seasons where we get additional information about new characters and they don't even have to be physical releases if they were to release one of these digitally once per season that would not only enrich the lore but also help attract new fans to the show i'd love to see more backstories explored for the new characters introduced in these or even just a small cameo in a future season and if after reading just these five books i've already discovered this much stuff that i had no idea existed who knows what else is out there i mean seriously it could be literally anything except for that oh god please subscribe
