I Explored 10 Japanese Racing Games Nobody Has Played In Years

all right so I thought today just for fun we're going to check out 10 random racing games from Japan for the PlayStation 1 this is actually something that I planned two years ago when I remember that this is something that I wanted to do and I looked at uh the games that I got I literally got those games to this day two years ago so on the 22nd of December 2021 which is literally the same day yesterday I was like damn that's so fitting now I should do this today so yeah we're doing it today so I the good thing is since it's been like two years since I checked these games out I have no idea what these games are anymore like I'm going into these like 100,000% blind I don't know what I got here all right so this is all this is all new for me and you too I I assume if you guys are intoed we can maybe do the same thing in uh Playstation 2 or maybe even Dreamcast or whatever whatever consoles there are we can do these for other consoles too so I assume some of these are going to be in Japanese too I did hear me out I actually did start learning Japanese two months ago and I can read the kaor it doesn't mean I understand everything but I should at least get like some idea of what I'd be looking at here so that's that's a big positive so here's the thing about Japanese games right um the menu navigation Works different differently on Japanese games so what we're used to is that the a button or the x button on on or cross button on on Playstation is confirm and this button is usually back or cancel that's actually fli flipped around for Japanese games just FY that's something I'll have to get used to today okay normal oh I guess that's the difficulty I saw with normal why not SE test we can listen to 19 sound [Music] effects they're really quiet mode menu dead he Road sure whatever that is well we'll go for it that's literally the name of the game has to be like the main thing name entry there we go fi select west east or question mark okay we can't select question mark let's just go with West I guess oh bro oh that's RX s oh my God that's supposed to be an RX7 oh my god I didn't even from oh my God okay oh we can we can select okay that's that's um Skyline super all these car models dude I am never ever complaining about Forza comos again looking at this oh my God okay what am I starting with let's just go with the U RX7 okay I have no idea what this is we're just picking oh that's actually our crew logo I see I see we're basically picking delivery here uh let's go with the hot hot Vapes here hell yeah man race three two one go oh wait that's a that's the loading I was like that no way this is the game this is the loading screen they have like a loading mini game here oh God oh God oh God why is it so fast 3 2 1 go why is it so fast holy crap is it supposed to be this fast I think I think something about the uh emulator setting might be different holy crap but maybe this is how it's supposed to be I don't know I've never played these it looks met up dude there's no way left time is counting fast it should oh yeah you're right it is it is running at Double speed why is it running at Double speed if I just set this to 50% does that just work or maybe because it's supposed to run at 30 okay now we got regular speed but the music is slowed down yeah probably because of the overclocking you're right that that was my idea too oh yeah no no none of this here okay this should be fixed now hey there we go there we go okay now we're gaming oh my God okay this feels a lot better but the time of day did just changed did you notice that Dynamic time of day I'll be damned yeah yeah wait fourth I guess I got leapt great leaped and GED okay let's try not to [ __ ] it up this time these these C models are premium dude so let's not try not to lose again this time it's probably because the game was sped up and I was just crashing all over the place is that a butt dude what the [ __ ] was that Ed just a straight up butt shot did you background they they look so much higher quality than the rest what is this nonsense that's like the highest Dr texture in the entire damn game look look how high rest that is compared to the rest [Music] that's that's where all the [ __ ] memory goes dude Jesus Christ let's go we're in P3 we're not really making a whole lot of progress here there we go okay I don't think we can get into P1 all right there we go hey first there we go listen to these midi soundtracks man nothing but the finest midi Tunes I'm I'm pressing next race aren't I we just doing the same race over and over again is this all this is let's go let's go yeah okay I should try to pay attention now cuz I think we just we may have just restarted the same race four times but now I I pressed next race but next race is just the same race there's only one race in this how how much what can am I supposed to do this dude yeah there's East but trust me it's literally the same track again but in Reverse this is like the fifth time we're doing this now right this just highway racing Purgatory yes I think that's what the that's what the game would have been called if it wasn't if it came to the West I mean to be honest it's a pretty R name for racing game what what just happened what the [ __ ] oh my God all right yeah yeah all right go on something happen please come on something just ask me to go to the next race but the next race it's just the same damn race again this is actually all there is a review says he do this about 10 times and then main menu again I'm not doing this 10 times I highly doubt anything's going to happen after the 10th time this is this is just bait that is 100% just bait okay I mean we still have some other stuff here like time okay it just shows me my times okay interesting uh map oh wait that's me that's me the 16% that's the that's the gang I chose or like the the symbol that I chose what is happening here what is this Need for Speed Carbon [ __ ] so I guess you really do do this over and over and over again until something happens that is ridiculous at least I have this cool loading screen here that's intractable you know covering loading screens with minii games would actually be a lot more common but who was it like I think Bandai NCO just patented mini games during loading screen so nobody else was allowed to do it oh boy that's actually all there is exit and I guess if you do this often enough you can check back with the map menu and you'll see that something changed I guess all right what a game what a game I mean hey at least we're not setting the quality bar that high because that would be kind of disappointing so yeah my favorite thing about this game definitely the um Billboards all over the place without without question all right next one game number two gy they made the to extreme racer games what okay well there there's a familiar face oh dude look at that actual FMV intro man holy crap I must eat up like half the CD I mean we're basically just looking at a gif so that's that's red I know this track yep indeed it's my favorite one surprised how long this is I thought this was just going to be like a 20 second cut scene like this [ __ ] is eating up space on the disc there's not going to be much left for the rest of the game I can tell you that much guys this is nice I like the I like the crustiness I like all the compr artifacts like it adds a lot of [Music] charm well these yakas are T people [Music] man okay I got to say that went way harder than it had any right to seriously so this is um I can't quite read that yet scenario okay I guess Mr Mr Man is trying to yeah okay okay yes get me out of here damn it yes get me out of here I already saved the damn game why do you want me to save the damn game okay they only look better than the last one now we can we can stick with the Miata for now I don't mind course select uhhuh does that kind of look like monco okay I guess we just go with this what is Bando oh I guess upgrading [Music] all the the font is so crusty it's actually kind of hard to read for me key assign ah look at that can do modern controls drift so I guess this is of a drifting game then let's see let's see how this [Music] plays God damn oh I sted what the hell okay the music is going really [Music] hard hey yo what is this soundtrack holy [ __ ] dude no J this is kind of nice I definitely need some finesse with the drifting okay I guess we have two round two laps here but we can't slow down too much because we have a timer taking down pretty much arcade star out running the opponent doesn't seem too difficult but I'm I'm really worried about the time dude it actually just got night this also has Dynamic time of day what the hell yeah the music is stealing the show really hard I got to say I can squeeze through all right nice I'm starting to get a grasp on the handling it's actually not too bad you need like one or two lefts to get used to the drifting oh boy you really can't overdo it honest to God this is not too bad I expected way worse the the handing on the previous game was way worse this is so much better already all right there's the Finish let's go this is nice no joke we look forward to playing more an okay don't know what that means this is the guy we just beat go went what was that all right let's try the A6 I guess can't change the color it seems but we can upgrade them midor okay there's no way I could figure out what that means so I guess we're just going to have to slap some stuff in here and hope it does something let's go with this expensive thing here he's saying no something something okay now they is probably saying I don't have the the points for this okay we just bought something nice and something else and something else and something else and something else okay got some engine upgrades let's go for another round so I think the MX5 just topped out at like 180 okay I'm not sure if the engine upgrades were actually equipped I think I might have just unequipped them I'm not entirely sure okay this one tops out at 182 but I really like that the time of day changes I think it does change when you're in the tunnel which is pretty clever right so we Sunset now we enter the tunnel it's not like a full tunnel so I guess so actually never mind does change look at that now it's getting darker slowly this is sick yeah the draw distance is really good too usually a lot of PlayStation One games have the issue that you couldn't really see far ahead it's also the reason why let's say for example Silent Hill uh uses a lot of fog that was actually not entirely a stylistic choice was more to height the fact that you know you can only see like a couple meters ahead before the the the ground just disappears I remember Driver 2 in particular was really bad or like the driver games both of them for the PlayStation one they had little to no draw distance finish all right nice okay different course so we clear that one we save these two all right let's go okay let's see is the car fast or not with these upgrades oh [ __ ] okay now I [ __ ] up really badly okay this this game has some gemas dude I got say performance wise I don't know this much of a difference then again I don't know what I bought so so there's that now we actually have a little bit of a battle on our hands here opponent is actually pretty fast oh dude definely want to drive that car next I that's a bit of a map points that there's only three drivable cars but then again maybe unlock other ones later on who knows but so far I've only seen three ah it's going to be tight oh [ __ ] oh not good yeah this track is definitely a lot more difficult than the previous one nice very efficient block I love the I love the banana on the we're going to get a new car this one you give me some parts actually look at that that's a different car was that 180sx we got some sticker in the back now oh yeah the TIR is super chuny more width means more grip right also like how the license plate is just blank by the way instead of just removing it just make a blank that's one way to get away with it I hope we could maybe like remove the speed gap of 180 seems like we're kind of locked oh did you say rack nasty nasty AI okay I'm going to try to squeeze through here there we go all right I think we got this in the bag all GG finish manag to win this Su list [Music] whatever you just said oh K sush we do have new cars now look at that Mr S3 and this one but dude this was cool way better than the first game I might actually play this again I don't know who knows so let's move on to a game should at least recognize J J what an intro so this Initial D the initial D game on PlayStation one Hest say might as well be the first one I don't even [Music] know I love these old school openings [Music] man and got to say as someone who's watched the entirety of Initial D I think the first season is my favorite and it is partially because it was it's by far the oldest one like I liked all the Crusty 3D animations and the art style of the of the characters I think that one's still my favorite all right story can we maybe like repeat the story from the anime/manga this a really cool menu for like key config because it's like a 3D model of a Playstation One controller I don't know I find this kind of cool it's super unnecessary but I'm glad they did it oh my my God oh my God these character models oh no that was a mistake they should have just used SLS from the [ __ ] manga man oh my God that is cursed Jesus Christ that is Nightmare fuel oh no what the why why would you do that although I will say it's mainly ity who looks this bad Tak looks kind of fine and it's also like you know if they're not up close it's also okay because all the details it see like like the details just kind of like washed together so at that point it's kind of fine I guess it's 9:00 on a Saturday all right 9:00 p.m. on a Saturday it's nice that they have a story mode here though with cut scenes and everything this is really cool so I assume it just retells the story from the uh you know manga/anime it's not it own thing or some arcade BS this is honestly kind of cool if you were a fan of Initial D back in the day and this was all you got I don't think this this too bad guess they had no budget for voice acting though let SP all the budges on the PS1 controller model yeah basically all right there we go I guess we have I just pause oh God did that crash the emulator we should let's try again no I can't skip it but I can I can fast forward it thankfully ah okay there we go that seems to work so that's all right manual uh-oh that's going to be fun so let's see this place I am kind of worried 1 go oh God okay I have to steal with the d-pad okay that's hella awkward oh nice they actually implemented the chime from the car that's really cool to the gut Run come on okay the controls are very very slippery very slippery but I guess they made it that way so that drifting feels a little bit easier this makes precise steering really difficult though not sure if I can win this on the first try let's see okay I think I'm starting to get the hang of it you know I don't think you actually have to break like at all like you just stay where you want to go it's actually that simple I also don't think you need any pass gear two hey there we go someone managed to win don't even ask me how don't even know look at this magnificent driving what a replay I'm surprised game doesn't actually look too bad might honestly be the best looking game so far like if we're just talking Graphics y y y y just watch the anime if you want to get the story okay let's try automatic this time man was a bit much I thought maybe for drifting games it's usually a little bit more like drifting in general it's a little bit easier or a little bit I don't know more accessible if you do it in manual but I want to try automatic fonts I got say in terms of Graphics is actually really not too bad handling though I don't know I see what they wanted to do right they wanted to make drifting easy but I think as a result they also made fight steering extremely difficult oh God why did the car just steer all I would say that was at least a little bit faster than the previous than the previous run otherwise that would be kind of embarrassing yeah no you're a be so sad oh okay oh okay that's a different course okay I think I Whi the start Jesus get a move on yep it's definitely foggy oh man think you have to use the brakes a little more contrary to what I said earlier now this check is very iffy I find it really hard to just drive cleanly here often times I'm just hitting walls really badly which I mean if you want to CH it up to skill issues fair enough I feel like sometimes the car just doesn't really turn the way you wanted to right here like you have to turn into a different direction and transition into the opposite direction that takes too long oh [ __ ] that just takes way too long the inertia drift it's not really think you can do here properly but it's fine we win anyways what's this [ __ ] trumpet in the background do you hear that okay I think I'm doing a little bit better by now not hitting as many walls anymore but it's still kind of tricky to just get around the track and without touching any Walls Start this the s yes the [ __ ] trumpet man nice loading image I was actually kind of hoping we could maybe like exit and see what else the game is it's not letting me out of here but I mean let me try to retire is actually a cut scene for losing wait I turn of ending just dipped and I used toing thepress in the car nice okay free running practice what's the difference between these two D chick let's do a dick chick or not I mean free running is free running I guess do I don't have any other cars okay maybe I have to beat the story modes characters to get their cars what's the difference between free running and uh practice beginner intermediate expert oh okay what's this [Music] [Applause] we just got a for doing that sector okay this this like you're a fan of the of the anime and you played this back back in the day is it's not too bad so let's move on to the next one M Ren greatest 70s okay whatever that is hey more real fmvs all right ah I see I see why the the game is called 70s I guess this is only carus from the 70s or up to 70s that's an interesting concept I wish more racing games would adopt this in just throwing a bunch of random ass cars into the game sticking with like a specific era I think it's really interesting look at old school TBA man one of all these cars are also in the game by the way it would be kind of funny if you see those in the intro cut scene and then they're not in the game there's like nobody in the audience completely empty Grand STS all right there you go CH from now on you call me Edna the second are your name okay yes my name are okay don't worry about it so what can we do here drive what car do I even have I even have one shop so we have what is that 660,000 tickets that's what we start with I guess we have to buy a car first okay we can start with what I think is Honda 800 is 800 yeah this this definitely means Honda yeah these are definitely more pricey we can only afford these two here I say let's go with this one s800 why not I like the yellow I like the stats by the way like the way the stats are shown is like on the on a gauge he car and nickname you can give your car a nickname what should we call this car GT car the Yugo oh dude yeah they add a pokes man from Sega GT this one's pokes the second car nickname okay yes okay we only have 2,000 tickers left what does this button do here oh okay you can upgrade it it seems I see I see the way the comos look they really remind me of driver okay no don't sell it before I accidentally sell the car let me just get out of here guess we're just going to have to get out here why is the why is the image Shake okay let's let's just run sukua this a track that I'm very familiar with so let's see how let's see how it uh sucuba track man it's hard not to drift just kind of happens I'm not sure if I can catch up honestly okay the CIA have zero grip like actually none yeah zero grip am I supposed to catch up to this guy yeah I don't think there's any way you're supposed to win this race probably more of an introductory race [Music] your get tickets did you just read that your get tickets that changes my top speed top speed is fine we actually need like more grip and handling that's like really bad right [Music] now okay I just bought a bunch of stuff without knowing [ __ ] think we might have gotten more handling I don't know either way I'm broke we have to we have to race again let's try this track who's this old man okay oh might be beat once I there more than two tracks by the way hey what D just knocked me out of the track this old man some dirty dirty tricks up his sleeve man look how far ahead he is now what the [ __ ] this [ __ ] getting a taste of my own medicine yeah pretty much how do they expected to win the first few races I mean fair enough at this point if I understood what I was reading I could have bought some more sensible upgrades but once again there's no way no way I'm winning this either this game is hard like holy [ __ ] you're not winning anything in the beginning until I guess you finally upgrade your car that's rough also just realized that the odometer on the speedo is actually working that's kind of cool but that's fairly demoralizing if you're losing by such a wide margin in like the first few races here I can see a lot of people probably giving up on this game really early on oh [ __ ] better I buy better upgrades or this just going to keep on happening can I see that bump again that was nasty I'll see that again look at this [ __ ] bam look at that gross okay let's actually try to buy some upgrades that actually help us this time setting I think that's why you actually have to apply upgrades I've not done that oh what can I do here interesting I don't know what we're doing here but we're we're changing something from tin to tick Chad do you like him tin or TI I like him TI oh God we're doing something bad to the edge of though grind the same two races losing them over and over and over again but like what is this [ __ ] Dark Souls where you have to do the same boss a bajillion times until you just win that is ridiculous the think I'm not really playing it playing right but hey it is what it is and maybe in like 3 years once I actually am somewhat I don't want to say fluent but like a little bit better Japanese we can [ __ ] is a Winker Winker a no R and L dude what is this control scheme this is this is want to point this out this is the basic standard control scheme you accelerate and break with the left stick and you steer with the r stick what the [ __ ] that is so mess up I've never seen this control scheme ever before good thing I went in here first dude do they not have like any anything that I'm used to they are insistent on having you use like acceleration break with a stick you can't put that on a button oh my God okay that's already off to a good start well at least I know thank God I I went in with it Beast turn so those are piston upgrades okay I can read I can read most of it the thing is um you know just like with with our language there's different fonts and it's it's hard for me to like read stuff in different fonts also using a lot of kanji those I can't read yet LSD that I can read this is bad country I say the camera makes me a little bit nauseous like it's bobbing up and down a lot very radic radically making me a little bit nauseous actually kind of driving through the city as well it's kind of nice I thought this was Highway only yo holy [ __ ] he dead oh he that for sure what the [ __ ] just happened I think that's a conflict with my control scheme if I break a I also look behind that's not I don't think that has anything to do with the game now that time is actually working correctly I just realized last second very weird oh dude look at the camera angle so tilted I this one seems all right I think if I were to like understand the story it would be a little bit more entertaining ah dude Whi [Music] it the grip was kind of with them chat could it be that every time I press the accelerator I'm pressing down the handbrake as well see now I'm not on the thle now I am is this brake on oh yeah the e braake was on the whole time that's probably why forgot to tell me okay go ahead and go again I think there might be some conflicts with the control scheme the car's not slowing down though wait a minute I don't think the head break is working I mean the to maybe it is maybe the car would be a lot faster otherwise what do I know okay I don't think career oh we got fmvs again it seems or kind of one thing that I really like I've seen this like several times by now is these um PlayStation One racing games from Japan they use a lot of like real world footage I want to see this more often if I'm being honest this is actually kind of cool because it helps tie the game more to real life you know okay it seems like we have a we have a name already or is this P Pura player damn we only there's no there's no I don't mind there's no there a regular okay I just I just pressed next oh well whatever we we continue on I God there's actually no English menu like previously all the games at least have English menus but now we actually have to like kind of see where we go this means Su suu I don't know what that means status yeah true it's just that'ss the com look a little bit squished but I guess that's all this is uh video video video some kind of videos okay I guess we have none yet option this means option it's nice that I can read this feels good man I can at least read like basic menu buttons it's kind of nice okay this I can't read though at least not not completely so I guess we're just going to have to click through who's this bloke they actually just using like pgs of real people like these people must be so old by now like this guy is probably in his like 50s by now it's kind of crazy to think about um is this who we choose to battle against or who to play us this means drift I think let's try drifting I don't know what I'm doing problem is they didn't tell me okay that is so cursed X the x button or Square is accelerate that that is the first that doesn't even make sense for Japanese controller layouts that feels so wrong drift section how do I drift oh God okay we do a simple power over I guess oh God how do the controls work here I think this might be more realistic than it's it might seem at first you have to counter steer really early it doesn't do it for you you actually have to counter steer manually this is actually somewhat realistic see like this is me not contest steering once I start sliding that's actually somewhat impressive okay not too bad so far yeah it feels a little bit huge for TBA I I agree there's nothing there also what this has a banking this turn is banked was that ever a thing before yeah dude this is actually like realistic I have to like use my inertia get off the gas and then counter Ste this is probably as realistic as you were able to get back on the PlayStation one when physics were mainly a suggestion that is very impressive now I don't know how the scoring system works here might be complete [ __ ] for all I know but this feels pretty good honestly it's like Giga sucuba man such a such a huge version of it oh [ __ ] I wonder if I get points if I go Offroad like that what that was actually that good I guess the I guess the judges don't really care if you go Offroad all right that's how the drifting works here not sure if he looks impressed I should come back to these games in like four years or 5 years when I can actually translate the text okay did I win I think I might have yeah winner suu what do you want for me yeah sure do whatever what is this guy Jesus Christ I like these these PS I mean there needs to be a place where I can ah there we go there we can change the controls but but I'm okay no not I'm used to them already so I'm I'm good I think we just went to a different track yes we did okay Jesus so it's a bit of a life simulator it seems where you have to like actually decide what track you want to go to and when you want to go back home it's pretty interesting and you also meet a bunch of seems like real people that you interact with it actually seems like a pretty authentic drifting game that's not just like hey pick a random car and a random trck and have fun drifting they actually build like a lot of stuff around it it's pretty cute there not a drifting competition now though this might actually be a race but since I'm driving a stock 86 it's not like I have any chance NOK look at that connecting people no still alive and I just completely fumbled it dude I'm so every time join I'm crashing they we're playing like Playstation One games here and a new one every like 30 minutes give me is like let's see maybe there's three laps to be honest I don't think if even if this is a race there's no way we're winning it that's one thing that I noticed about a lot of these Japanese racing games on PS1 they are ball crushing hard at least at times some of them were okay but Jesus Christ we desperately have played before also had a 180 speed limit this makes me a question how am I supposed to win these races then I mean we have automatic transmission I highly doubt the automatic transmission locks us to fourth gear that would be kind of silly try slip streaming the traffic so I don't see any here this place is dead I think we might be getting closer though I might be tripping looking at the mini map I think we're actually getting closer yeah music is going hot again at least oh there he is maybe we can still clutch this out there's some traffic caruse feel like the traffic cars only spawn when you're close to the opponent like we saw none of them pretty much the entire race long now the opponent is pulling again maybe some rubber band okay now I [ __ ] up proper you know why I want to say we're not gear limited because we're only at 5K RPM but it's not like we're maxing out the RPM here we're not maxing out the fourth gear that I find kind of bizarre need to take off the limit in the upgrades really this which of these is the right one we could try getting the EVC fer something with fuel middle one you sure fuel cut I mean maybe yeah fuel limiter okay I bought it equipped it let's try again I mean that's something you really just kind of have to know if you're just a casual and you pick this game up in the store because the cover looked fun uh that kind of that kind of sucks expect actually nothing these small things stand out so much so better game box seems like a good idea and what else tires yeah where's gear book I like that they added images so that a guy jeans like think I just [ __ ] up oh nice dude did you see that I ran out of time but the car kept rolling over the I want the Finish light so I got another time extent dude that's pogers where's the next checkpoint though this the one oh [ __ ] dude this is hard okay now we lost for real though this is actually a lot harder we get a cut scene he's not happy and now we can try again but I think the checkpoints here is really the main challenge like the opponent's are easy to overtake whoa what are the physics doing whoa what the [ __ ] all right still Playstation One game at heart could maybe try drifting but I don't know how I don't know how to engage a drift oh this is really hard dude time is really working against you here [ __ ] this is really hard I don't think I can beat this I basically can make any mistakes damn I I'll probably come back to this another day and then we actually do like all the stories maybe I don't know if I'm if I'm crazy enough we can do all the stories all right boy what a what a trip what a trip I kind of scammed you unfortunately it was only nine games instead of 10 because I thought that other game was a different one but it ended up being the same one was very interesting to see all of these different approaches and different levels of quality different levels of focus and uh you know but these games are like because uh they're quite
