I thought that it would be fitting to post this song on today, as Mr. Lee Andrew Williams passed away on Monday of last week (August 30th) at the age of 75. This was one of the particular cd's that my grandmother used to play while driving (and still does). The group truly had a unique style.
The Spiritual QC's (Qualified Christians) were formed by Mitchell Thornton (Williams' uncle). Williams and Willie Ligon The group would soon disband, but years later, a cassette of the group found its way in the hands of a Memphis radio announcer who played songs from the cassette over the air. The tape became a hit and a small Memphis label released the group's first album (Jesus Is Alive and Well). A number of albums followed and the popularity of the group continued to grow. The main line-up consisted of Lee Williams as lead singer, Al Hollis as guitarist and background vovals, Patrick Hollis as background singer, and Leonard Shumpert as second lead vocalist. Williams was known for his conserved demeanor and dynamic vocals and described as a true gentleman. The group's last album, "Memphis Gospel, Live!" was released in 2015. However, the group continued to tour throughout the South, and Mr. Williams retired after being diagnosed with dementia. Mr. Lee Williams' final performance took place in 2018. Mr. Williams will truly be missed, but also remembered as a true Qualified Christian.
